Rachel Vargo, a board-certified esthetic nurse specialist, walks through a basic skincare routine: cleanse and moisturize morning and night, use daily sun protection, and exfoliate several times a week. She recommends medical-grade products, mineral sunscreens, and salicylic acid cleansers for acne-prone skin, but skips abrasive seed or sugar scrubs.

R.com hey, it's JJ here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. What a fantastic question. Thanks so much, Katie from YouTube. The question is, what should I do to keep my skin looking good? And it's really never just one thing. This is the question I actually sometimes seem to get more often than not. What's the, you know, the one cleanser or the one moisturizer or one sunscreen or one exfoliant I should be using or what's that one treatment I should be doing? Well, newsflash. It's actually looking at really the pieces of the puzzle and how those are going to be really good just for you. So yes, genes are playing a factor into our skin routine, our diet, our exercise, all of that. And if I were to make a specific brand product recommendation, it might be outdated in six months because the world of skin care and rejuvenation is evolving so quickly. I literally have to attend one or two conferences a month just to keep my finger on the pulse of what are some of the best antioxidants, peptides? What should we be avoiding, what should we be doing more of? So here's a place to start. What should you be doing to keep your skin looking good? First of all, follow a really basic, simple routine at home. It doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, I have this really great skin sheet. It's my sophisticated skin cheat sheet that basically takes you through the different layers of an at home skin routine that I think everybody should follow. But then it's the specific products that do need to be customized according to your skin goals, your genetic background, and some of the skin conditions that you might have. Say, for example, if you're acne prone, if you're really dry, if you're skin sensitive, if you have rosacea, if you have melasma or hyperpigmentation or, or you have dry aging skin. So it's never a one thing fits all. So I really encourage you guys to really move away from that shiny object syndrome. Or this magical pill is going to make me lose 10 pounds, or this magical moisturizer is going to make my skin look like that person's in the magazine. It really comes down to this basic protocol. Cleansing the skin morning and night, moisturizing the skin morning and night, sun protection every single day. And Exfoliation a few times a week. And why I'm so confident in sharing that type of basic routine is because I've been doing this since 2011 and I've helped thousands of patients stabilize their skin. Typically, what I see, and of course this is anecdotal, this is educational information not to be taken as medical advice. However, across the board, in as little as two weeks, once people just start to hone in on those aspects, cleansing, moisturizing, sun protection, and exfoliation, their skin really starts to become less red, less irritated, smoother, glassier, and yes, jj, you have a starter kit coming to you. It will be at your home shortly. I've sent it just for myself from Love from Rachel. But that's really where people need to start, is your starter kit. Before trying to look at any other type of rejuvenation procedure, you got to stabilize your skin. It's like with your, your, your diet plan, you really want to hone in on what your body wants and really just do what's available, what's within your budget and your lifestyle. And in regards to a starter kit, you don't have to spend a lot of money on this. In fact, for the cost that some people might be spending on one serum or one moisturizer, you can actually get all of those products in a starter kit. So it's not necessarily how expensive the products are. It's really, are they backed by research? Right. And are they right for your specific skin needs? So the question of what are my favorite cleansers and moisturizers? Believe it or not, I'm actually acne prone. So I really like to use a cleanser with a little bit of salicylic acid. And I'm a firm believer in making sure that your cleanser is going to be doing some double or triple duty for you. What I mean by that, it's got to take off my makeup, right? I don't want to use a toner, so it's got to be PH balance and it can't be too drying or too stripping, but it has to get off the dirt, oil, debris, and pollution from the day. And also while I've been sleeping and, you know, my hair has been in my face and I've been sleeping and creating oils. And then for a moisturizer, I like to go with something that's lightweight but does have a sprinkling of vitamin C and vitamin E and peptides in it. So it's not necessarily about layering different vitamin C serums, different copper peptide serums, different vitamin E serums and you know, lo and behold, then you have a routine of seven steps. Who has time for that, right? But it's about getting sophisticated skincare and this is often found in medical grade products. So instead of layering all those different serums on over top of one another and you could actually even be getting interactions between the formulations, you're better off just using a product that actually has a sprinkling of all of those actives in it. And then with sunscreens, it's really just, you know, going for a really good mineral based sun protectant. And then for exfoliators, I love using scrubs that say use magnesium as the primary exfoliant grit and avoiding things like sugar scrubs, salt scrubs, rice scrubs, or apricot or cranberry seed or hull scrubs because they're typically a bit too abrasive. But I have this really amazing, sophisticated skin cheat sheet for you guys that you can get your hands on and it just really takes you through my basic steps. So that's what I recommend to keep your skin looking good is to actually just stabilize it first with with an at home routine.
