What Type of Magnesium is Best? with JJ Virgin
15 Dec 2025 · 8 min
Podcast episode by JJ Virgin covering magnesium types and uses, plus short sponsored segments. JJ explains magnesium’s roles (used in more than 300 biochemical reactions; supports nerve/muscle function, immune system, heartbeat, bone strength, blood sugar balance, and energy production). She answers a listener question about which magnesium to use: for constipation use poorly absorbed forms (magnesium oxide, hydroxide, citrate, vitamin-C-bound ascorbate) and suggests most people may need ~500–800 mg; best-absorbed forms for boosting levels and calming are magnesium chelate / magnesium bisglycinate; magnesium malate may help fibromyalgia/muscle pain; and for brain/neural support she mentions mag glycinate or “mag3onite”. The episode also contains multiple sponsor reads (Earth Breeze, Wayfair, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Monarch, Pacifico) and holiday/consumer tips.

Hey, it's J.J. here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family's sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating, and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. From Kathleen F. In San Diego. And this was on one of my recent Instagram and Facebook lives. And she asked, what type of magnesium do you recommend? All right, the. The answer is. Oh, we always love this answer. It depends, Kathleen. First of all, let's talk about why you need magnesium in the first place. Magnesium is used in more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal nerve and muscle function. It supports a healthy immune system, keeps the heartbeat steady. It helps your bones stay strong. It also helps with balancing blood sugar levels and aids in the production of energy. And so it is super duper important. In fact, those are some of the places I tend to use it the most is energy and, and muscles and relaxation. Now one of the other things that it can be used for is constipation. And of course the form you use for all these different things matter. So if you're using magnesium for constipation, you actually don't want a form of magnesium that's well absorbed. And so magnesium oxide hydroxide, magnesium citrate, these are all the ones that you would want to consider for constipation. And my way that I do that, I think this is a great thing to travel with by the way. It's kind of a travel hack as you're one of those people that tends to travel and get a little more constipated. First off, make sure you bring in some bars with you. I travel with my bars. 12 grams of fiber, depending on the bar, 11 to 12 grams of fiber. So that helps keep things going. But then I always have some magnesium with me too because at home I take Epsom salts baths when I which are rich in magnesium. But on the road I can't do that. So you, what you want to do is take one of those forms, oxide hydroxide or citrate or ascorbate, all the vitamin C bound ones and see how much you need. And what you might find is if you have a little bit too loose stools, back it down one. And I find most people probably need somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 to 800 milligrams of magnesium. Okay, next one. The best absorbed form of magnesium. It's also great for calming if you were just looking at it. What's the best one for boosting my overall magnesium levels? Magnesium chelate, magnesium bisglycinate. These are going to be your best ones. Now other one if you are have fibromyalgia, muscle aches and pains, your better one is going to be magnesium malate. That's going to be your better one. And for neural magnesium for brain function because this can be super helpful for brain health. And for add that one I look at either mag glycinate or mag3onite.
Lots to think about here.
