Would Fasting Over 12 Hours Shrink Your Ovaries?
15 Dec 2025 · 8 min
Podcast episode (transcript) of JJ Virgin’s Ask the Health Expert where JJ introduces intermittent fasting expert Cynthia Thurlow to answer a listener question about whether fasting over 12 hours can shrink ovaries. The episode contains multiple sponsor reads (Wayfair, Earth Breeze, Monarch, Ray-Ban/Meta), short host and guest bios, and Cynthia’s evidence‑based guidance: she is unaware of human research showing ovarian shrinkage, cites animal studies as preliminary, and offers practical menstrual-cycle‑specific fasting recommendations (safe in first three weeks of cycle; avoid fasting 5–7 days before menses).

A Y F A I R.com hey, it's JJ here. You know, I've been talking about environmental toxins forever, and laundry detergent is a sneaky one. A lot of them contain harsh chemicals like dyes, preservatives, and even UV brighteners. Those brighteners don't actually clean anything. They just coat fabric so your eyes think things look whiter or brighter. That's more chemicals I don't want on my family sheets or skin. And if you've got sensitive skin or allergies around the house, this can be a big problem. That's what got my attention about Earth Breeze. It looks like a dryer sheet, but it's actually laundry detergent. You toss one in the washer and that's it. No pouring, no mess, and no heavy plastic jug. Their packaging is lightweight cardboard, which helps reduce plastic waste. And if you choose the fragrance free option, it's gentle, hypoallergenic, non irritating and non sensitizing. I really like how simple it is and how fresh and clean everything comes out without those unnecessary chemicals. Right now you can try Earth Breeze for up to 40% off with free gifts@earthbreeze.com virgin that's earthbreeze.com virgin for up to 40% off plus free gifts on your first order.

I haven't read any research to show that it would shrink ovaries. I know that there's been some research done on lab animals that has suggested that potentially that could be an issue. But we aren't lab animals and I know that that's usually the first step in terms of scientific research. It's done on animals first and then on humans. And so I would just look at it as there are a lot of signs that we need to monitor and look for in terms of fasting to see its impact on our reproductive health. And so if someone is sleeping through the night, their stress is dialed in, they're not over exercising, their energy is good. Good then. I think women that are still cycling can easily adapt to doing intermittent fasting either on a daily basis or doing every other day, or doing one 24 hour fast a week. And then women that are in perimenopause making that transition into menopause in the five to seven years preceding menopause, they can certainly utilize this strategy. But it is easiest for women who are no longer getting their periods because they just don't have that hormonal fluctuation month to month. And you know, one other piece that I think is really important to kind of tack into here is that women that are still getting their periods every month should and can utilize intermittent fasting the first three weeks of their menstrual cycle. So from day one when they start bleeding, up until five to seven days preceding their cycle, they can safely integrate intermittent fasting, even if it's a couple times a week, once a week, etc. However, the five to seven days preceding their periods, they should not be fasting.
