If You Want To People To Make The Decision To Work With You FASTER, Do This ft. Guffy Wright

In this Genius Network session, host Joe Polish introduces Guffey Wright, a veteran insurance broker from the Mahoney Group, who presents a decision‑making system called “Remove the Friction.” Wright argues that every stalled decision is caused by friction, which he categorises into three types: not clear, not safe, and not aligned. He proposes the V3 sequence – Value, Vulnerability, Validation – as a method to eliminate each type of friction and increase “decision velocity,” the directional momentum of a choice. Value means uncovering what truly matters to the other party, creating clarity. Vulnerability follows, allowing honest truth‑telling and building safety once the other person feels heard. Validation then reinforces the decision, giving the chooser confidence and direction. Wright illustrates the framework with a personal story about publishing a book, showing how he used V3 on himself to secure a publishing deal within two weeks. He also shares business results: applying V3 to the Mahoney Group’s sales process lifted new‑business revenue by 55% over 24 months. Wright emphasizes that while trust is foundational, alignment – the combination of trust and clear direction – is the true currency that moves decisions. The session ends with practical advice: identify friction, follow the V3 steps, and let the decision move without pushing.

Your life is made up of decisions. Some are easy, many are difficult. The same is true for your prospects, clients, and team members. As a Genius Network member, part of your success depends on helping people make decisions with greater confidence and clarity. What if there was one major obstacle that slows down decision-making, creates hesitation, and keeps people from moving forward? And what if removing the obstacle could make decisions happen quicker and easier? That's what Guffey Wright will share with you today, and that obstacle is friction. For over 20 years, Guffey's been an owner and partner in the Mahoney Group, the largest privately held insurance brokerage in the country. He leads a team of more than 70 advisors guiding multimillion-dollar decisions for business owners. The title of his talk is Remove the Friction. Please help me welcome Guffey Wright.
Thank you, sir. Appreciate it.
Thank you.
All right. Genius Network, it's good to be here. As much as it pains me, I am not here to sell you insurance. I'm here to give you something even more valuable, and it's a sequence to how to guide human beings through high-stakes decisions. It's the only thing we do more in a day than breathe is make decisions. Think about that. So I've spent 20 years in consultative sales trying to figure out why good decisions get stuck. People don't fear making decisions. In fact, we love our autonomy. We fear making the wrong one. So when something's clearly a good idea, but the decision won't move, there's something in the way. You guys know that feeling, that resistance? I call it friction. And friction is not failure. It's information. And all decisions make sense. With enough information. So in any stalled deal or decision in your life, on a team, in sales, you can trace them back to 3 fundamental types of friction: not clear, not safe, not aligned. Not clear. It's hard to make decisions when you're confused. It's not safe. Fear, emotional resistance, insecurity, pressure. You know what to do, but something feels a little heavy or not aligned. You and your partner, your spouse, team members, prospect, everybody's intelligent, everybody's smart, but if you don't agree on where you're going, there's going to be some friction. Not clear, not safe, not aligned. What's actually interesting is when you flip those, you have the ideal outcomes in sequence, To make an excellent decision. Opposite of confusion is clarity. Opposite of not safe, safety. And direction. So how do you provide these outcomes when you're helping someone make a decision? You don't get there by controlling or pushing harder. You have to remove what's in the way. And when it's done, it's a powerful experience. It's one that never gets old to me no matter how long I do this. So it's called V3 is the sequence, and it's in order. I'm not inventing human psychology, but I am sequencing it.
What's V3?
The first one, the first V is value. What I mean by value is what's important to them. Not what you care about, what they actually care about. So your goal is not to convince or persuade. Your goal is to have them gain clarity on what they value. And once you know what's important to them and their future ambition, You can guide them there. So value creates clarity. The second V is vulnerability. I'm not a natural empath, so I might spell it wrong there. What I mean by vulnerability is, can I tell you the truth, or can the truth be told in a setting? If you have commission breath, They won't trust you. They won't trust you because pressure kills safety every time. So the sequence matters though. You have to lead with value. You have to earn the right to be vulnerable. Once you've earned it by detaching from your individual desire and attaching to their best decision, that's when safety expands. Now, in consultative sales, there's a line that we use, and if delivered authentically, you can actually see the shoulders relax and the nervous system chill. It's this, after you've given value, this is what I would do if I were you, even if you decide not to go with us. And when delivered authentically, it continues to surprise me. How much people like that. When it's true. That's when the truth actually starts to surface, and you cannot guide someone in making a tough decision if, if there's no truth. Vulnerability creates safety. The third one is validation, and by validation, I mean make them strong in their choice. Not cheap affirmation, not agreement, not a parking ticket. Actually seeing them, writing a thank you note, showing appreciation. You help them see clearly what they already know and feel so they can move with confidence. So have you had a time in your life where you were making a tough decision and you went to a mentor and you needed some advice and they made you feel strong in your decision and in a direction. They may have not even agreed with you, but they gave you validation. When you felt strong in a decision that someone else helped you with, that's validation. It's powerful stuff when done right. So this is V3, value plus vulnerability plus validation equals decision velocity. And velocity is not speed. It's directional movement when friction is removed.

Earlier this year, I had to do V3 on myself. At the end of the year, I was stuck on an important decision in my career. I was on a brand new Genius Network call, and Joe learned I was in consultative sales, and he said, why don't you come to the Robert Cialdini event with me? You can be my guest. I sat right over there for free, and I was at the time really stuck on if I should write a book about this or not, and that event gave me clarity that I should do it. I had the experience, I had the clarity, the framework, the network, clear direction, I thought, but my decision stalled. Why? The F word, friction. For me, it was in this safety part. I was worried about reputational harm. That's just a professional way to say I cared too much what other people think. And the second was I knew that the level of intensity That would need to go into this, I would have to ask people for help, and I hate asking people for help, and it's been so good for me to do that. So the guy whose job his whole career and what he's been doing and thought he had come up with a pretty slick deal here was dealing with his own friction, and it was— I was blocked by my own. And then after this, I ran the sequence on myself, V3, and I did what any good Genius Network member should do. I went to Joe's bot, his clone. I started asking it questions. What do you think about this framework? What do you think about this? Does this hold? How do we do this? And it actually put me in touch with 3 different publishers that I should go to. But the bot wasn't the decision maker. I gained clarity on what I valued. I felt safe with a specific publisher, and we were aligned on a clear direction. Friction removed, decision made. I had a publishing deal within 2 weeks. So I want to be real clear though. This is not a sales process. It is a human decision-making system. So it does not compete with anything that you're currently doing. It completes it. When we layered it into our sales process at the Mahoney Group, our new business increased by 55% in 24 months. And in consultative sales, that's, that's good. I know you guys are growing businesses by a million percent every day, but in consultative sales, that's That's unheard of. And here's also what's interesting about human decision-making, especially in my business, but I think it's universal. We're taught that trust is the most important thing, that that closes deals, that is what closes deals, that's what moves decisions. But trust is foundational throughout all the 3 Vs. Everything grows and dies in it. But it is not the currency in decision-making. Trust plus direction is, and we actually have a word for that, in the English language. It's alignment. Alignment is what actually moves decisions. Trust gets people together, but alignment gets people moving together. So the next time you're guiding a tough decision, remember that value creates clarity, vulnerability, authentic vulnerability, creates safety, and validation creates clear direction.
Thank you.
So when you're having that tough conversation, take a breath, use the framework, and watch the decision move. And not because you pushed harder, it's because you named the friction and removed it. If you're detached from your own individual desire and attached to their best decision, prospects say yes faster, your business grows, your spouse feels heard, So when I started this, I said I was not going to sell you insurance, but this might be the best insurance you ever decide on. So stop pushing, remove what's in the way, because friction is not failure, it's information. And all decisions make sense with enough information.
