JP hired a young man who showed up in bad weather and offered to work for free. Given a two-week challenge to build an AI assistant called Manny, the hire illustrates JP's belief that unpaid experience beats entitlement. He built his own credibility the same way, working for nothing early on.

Young man, this one's for you. If you're looking for a job, if you're looking for experience and you can't find it, stay tuned, keep watching. I'm going to tell you how I've just hired a young man and how it's going to change his life and possibly ours. Today's Saturday. Yesterday was Friday, 12 PM. Somebody in the office overhears a phone call. I was working in a shared space and they said, you're working in manufacturing and AI? I said, yes, why are you listening to my goals? He said, no, no, you're quite loud and passionate about what you say, so I heard, but I couldn't help but overhear, and it's quite interesting. I said, well, thank you, that's a compliment. He said, are you looking for people? I said, always. If they're great people, we'll always take great talent. It's hard to find, even harder to retain. So yes, if you have somebody in mind, let me know. He said, give me a minute. 12 PM, goes off, makes a call, comes back 12:15. I've got somebody for you. 12:30, team's meeting. Young man here from overseas, loves AI, loves where we're going, says I want an opportunity. I said, great, if you're serious and you can get here by 2 PM, let's talk. I blocked out 2 PM to 3 PM. He doesn't even have a car. He caught transport, anything. It was raining, walked out in the rain, caught transport, got the bus, got the train, ended up at the office. Rocks up drenched with a smile on his face. I said, what are you so happy about? He goes, I've come to the country for a better opportunity. You sound like on the call what you said was sincere. I'm studying master of IT. What you're doing matters to me, and I'm willing to work just for the experience. Now, I was absolutely flabbergasted, and that's a big word, and I don't use big words, but I'll tell you why. Very rare in this day and age is anybody willing to put themselves out of their comfort zone or work for anyone for free. And I'm not suggesting that it's a good idea or it's the best idea, but here's what it is. As an employer, when you hear that somebody's willing to do whatever it takes to get the experience, to show you that they've got what it takes, to show to themselves that they're capable. This young man had the job by 3. He slept that night at 3 AM. He was so excited. I said to him, here's the job that I need from you. I like to think in my head that I'm Iron Man, hence my t-shirt. I said, an Iron Man has Jarvis. I said, and we're doing manufacturing, we're doing AI, and I need you to bridge the gap. I said, I need you to build me my version of Jarvis called Manny. And he said, okay, how long do I have? I said, you've got 2 weeks. He goes, okay. 12 hours later, at like, he was still pinging my team's message. At 3 AM, he went to bed saying, I've done all I can. I've only stopped because I need to, I need some more subscriptions and I need some more applications and I don't want to bother you. I guess you're sleeping. And I reply with a blue love heart at 3 AM. I don't know what to say other than this guy's awesome. So if you want opportunities and you think they're going to fall in your lap, two things are true. One, they might. In some universe, this guy just overheard a call. Actually, someone else overheard the call and said, "Hey, what about this guy?" These things happen in life, far more than is possible. But when he got the opportunity, he took it. 12, 12:15, 12:30, 2, 3, he was hired. He was not even a thought in my mind. Like, I didn't even know he existed on the planet before that. The reason that I was so passionate to take him on, given that he didn't have the experience, was that he said, "I am willing to do whatever it takes. I have a track record." of doing these things I love. I need somebody who will also take a bet on me. I said, if you are competent and if you are capable and if you are willing, if you are capable and if you are confident and you want to be the best and one day you want to run your own business, I said, I'm willing to bet on you. I'm willing based on what I've seen from you, the speed, the history, and the vision that you've given me. Not the goal you've set for 5 years, but the vision of where your life is going to be. I see what you're going for. And I'm gonna back you. He calls me today, Sunday, says, I'm on, I'm moving faster. Guys, you need to hear this, it's a wake-up call. You don't always, you can't always go in and have these high-paying jobs. You can't be always 20 and expect the world and do nothing for it. I'm 32, and we grew up, which wasn't that far from you, we did whatever was required so people would understand who we were. There was a brand, there was a reputation. We worked for free, we did shit jobs, not because we liked the fact that people were working us for free because we knew what we didn't know. We understood the fact that we had to get the experience and the credibility. And once we were able to do that, our value went way up, went way higher than I ever anticipated. I was able to go into a place when I was younger, I was working at a pharmacy. I did 2 weeks at my own expense. I said, just give me a chance, please just let me try. After that, I was promoted to manager. I was the youngest manager they had, and I was getting paid more than the women that had been working there for 10 So if you're watching this and you say, 'Oh, nothing is free in life,' or 'That's a waste of time,' or 'Those things don't exist,' bullshit. If you don't put yourself in those positions to maximize the opportunity that may land on your lap, which is wrong, you should go and create your own. But when they come across your lap or they're thrown across your desk and you sit there saying, 'No, I'm expecting everything and I've done nothing,' and I'm not discounting those of you who have tried and those of you who are holding your value, But there comes a point in your life where you must be honest with yourself and say, do I have the skill set? Do I have the experience, the knowledge, the maturity? Do I have the ability to earn what I'm actually asking for? And if the answer is no, reflect within and say, what can I do to put me there? There is no doubt that each one of you is worth a lot more than you think, that each one of you is capable to do a lot more than you imagined. But you cannot get there if you don't do the thing now. If you put yourself on that pedestal and don't do the hard work and don't put in the hours and assume it's going to come to you because you felt entitled and you just sat there and did nothing about it. You remind me of a story when somebody died and went to heaven. They were out in the sea drifting. They were in a boat, obviously lightning struck, boat gone, capsized, people floating. God sends them a small boat and then he sends them let's just say a bigger boat, and they throw like the life ring, and then a helicopter, and they say, 'No, I'm waiting for God to save me, I'm waiting for God to save me.' When they get to the end of life and they get to heaven and he says, 'I gave you 3 opportunities, you took none. 3 times you had opportunities, you took none.' Don't wait for somebody to come and save you. Nobody's coming to save you. Do the work. Put yourself in environments and groups, go to events, hang out with people, have friends who want what you want for you. Who want to be the best version of themselves. Even if you're different, that's a great group of people to be around. Keep going, don't stop, don't lose heart, and keep creating those opportunities. And when you get them, because you will get them, don't let them slip out of your hands. Do whatever it takes to learn, do whatever it takes to get the experience and knowledge. Be mindful not to be taken advantage of. What we're going to end up doing for this young man, and he doesn't even know this yet, is There's no way we'll ask him to work and not pay him for his time. But the fact that he would suggest that I will do whatever it takes to prove it is exactly what you need to foster, is exactly what you need to create within yourself. That ability to say, it's okay, I'm gonna get where I'm gonna get, and I'm willing to do anything. Because the only thing guaranteed is if you don't get up your ass and change, that you're gonna stay where you are. The future is not guaranteed for anyone. You can't then complain that you didn't have the chance. There's one thing this man had in the character is he was humble enough and genuine enough to understand that if he wanted to get where he needed to go, he was willing to do whatever it takes, and he put his time and money where his mouth is. If you like this type of content, you like the message, it's raw, it's real, it's direct, it's to the point, and it speaks to you, there's two things you can do. The first thing is you can remember the following: always think your hardest, work your best, and know that God will take care of the rest. And the second thing you can do is if you like what you hear and you want to join a team who's working in manufacturing, and I'm smiling because I'm absolutely nailing this one, and this is for you, and I don't want this to be edited. Again, if you think you want to join a team who's doing manufacturing and AI and you want to join a group of young men and women who are talented individuals going for gold, we are an overnight success story in the making. If you want to be a part of that, the passion, the vibe, the atmosphere, yeah, the late nights, the hard work, the times where you want to pull your hair out because you can't do it, and then you get a breakthrough because you've been fueled on caffeine and Red Bull for the past 24 hours, and people are there to actually cheer you on because they're going through it with you. Let us know below. Reach out. We're always looking for people like you. You're rare. You exist, and we need you. We want you. As always, until next time, that was JP.
