Should designers learn to code?

A designer argues that learning basic coding helps you talk to engineers and stay flexible, but coding shouldn't be your job. Design work is already substantial enough.

So I'll bring up the controversial question, should designers learn to code? I've had long discussions about this. My very wonderful and talented boss again swears up and down he thinks all designers should 100% learn how to code. I have had to like no. There's a lot of non coding work that designers do still need to do. If you are an octopus and have eight arms and 100 hours a week that you want to work and you want to code as well, be my guest. But it is my experience that there is simply too much design work to justify every designer also hopping into BS code. I think every designer should take a coding class. Do I think you should code for your job? No. Do I think you should know how if the world is melting down and or to be able to have a conversation with an engineer about how components are built? Yes.
