Welcome to the Secret Sauce of Outsourcing podcast that's dedicated to making you better at outsourcing to the Philippines. This is episode 260, how hiring one ofs can help an entire community. So I get a lot of emails from employers and from Filipino workers telling me about how onlinejobs PH has changed their life. But this one is different. This is more of a first hand explanation of what's going on. So my son is on a mission in the Philippines for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I've talked about this a bunch. Every week I talk to him on the phone. We talk for a couple hours usually. And the last couple weeks have been really eye opening to me in what's going on. So he's on this little island, Marinduque, which actually isn't that little, but it's a very Filipino, like old school Filipino place where it's an island culture and the towns are small and the people are poor and it's not like Manila. But he explained a lot about the culture that is really interesting to me that I didn't know. And this culture trickles over to the bigger cities, which I hope you'll see. So here's what I want to do. I'm going to play this video for you if you're on YouTube or I'm going to play the audio for you from this video conversation that I had with my son on the phone. I was recording this because he had started talking about something really, really good and I wanted to record it. So here's my son.
There's all these dads, like, they have to leave their families. And this is really emotional to me because there's a lot of single moms because their husbands can only return once every three months because the husbands have to leave their families and go work on the main island. But with like these husbands with this new opportunity where they can work at home and stay with their family instead of leaving their family, it helps strengthen the family and it's really amazing and it's really good for a lot of people.
Yeah, that's cool.
That's.
It's cool that it's cool that, that we give that opportunity to people and it's changing lives.
Yeah. And like, I didn't know growing up with like my dad running online jobs that it was just like. And I was like, okay, these like Filipinos, they just like change their work to this. But like, no, like, these people need work and like, there's a point where like, they get temporary jobs and they'll only work for this job for like a month or so and then like the jobs over, the contracts over, then they have no money. But like this is a way for the Philippines to finally bring in money from like external money into the Philippines from other countries and you know, keep the economy going because that's the kind of thing that actually strengthens an economy. And before they didn't have that. And that's why, part of the reason why it's such a poor economy without sending people overseas.
Because before they just send people overseas to bring money back in.
Yep. And that's still very popular. But now for example, we have been a person that we're teaching and she has to leave right now. She has to leave her two little kids that are 8 and 9 years old. She has to fly to Hong Kong and be there for a year or two and work there for a year or two, leave her kids with her 90 year old mother to take care of them. And it sucks. And it sucks. And she said we had our last visit with her last night and it sucks. And she asked us what am I missing? And I wanted to tell her it's the family, but he's missing two things in her life. It's the connection with her children and the connection with the Holy ghost. And you know, if she had some sort of computer skills or she could apply online jobs like other people can, it was safer. So for the maybe hundreds of thousands of people that are actually getting jobs from online jobs, this is changing like literally changing hundreds of thousands of lives. So yeah, it's good.
And I think a lot of employers don't even realize as like they think they're just hiring a person. They don't realize this is like a major, major opportunity for the people that they're hiring. It's changing, it's changing that person's life. It's changing that person's kids lives. It's changing that person's parents lives, probably changing their grandkids lives that aren't even born yet because they'll grow up way more educated and have more opportunity just because their parents have worked for a foreign company. Their parents will teach their kids. No, you have to get some skills because you can do this. And their kids will teach their kids and yeah, it's a big deal.
Yeah. And that's not just it. Not only does it bless those families lives, the kids lives like it's, you can see it, there's a clear difference in the people overseas unless they have a business here, but even then like these People like, they're able to supply for their neighbors. Like, this is island culture. Like, if someone's in need of food, they give food to their neighbor. And, you know, like you said, the American employers are just hiring a person, but, like, this is like one person on a sitio, which is a road. And that situ is struggling because they don't have work and they're seeking for work, and then all of a sudden they have. I mean, imagine $400 a month coming to someone that's almost 20,000 pesos. And that can easily feed a family of five easily. And provide for their electric and water and clothes. And that is life for someone on this island. That does. Where you are on this island, it does easily. And it stops the men from having to move away from their families and be far away.
I didn't realize the power of it. I mean, I knew.
I knew it's doing that.
I don't.
Talking to you and hearing it from you is cool.
No, it's. It's night and day. It's awesome. And I hope it can continue to grow, especially as the education system here continues to improve. Yeah, there's a lot.
So here's what I learned after having this conversation with him. First, it was. It was kind of emotional hearing. Hearing this, the situation, and how we're changing lives there. So I learned, number one, the Philippines does very little exporting. Like, individual islands do even less exporting. So where he is, they don't send anything out of the island. Which means if you don't export anything, well, there's no money coming in. And if you're buying stuff from the mainland, well, all you ever do is send money out. Money never comes back, which makes you poor. So the way they solve this is by sending people. They export people. And I learned exporting people destroys families and communities. So over the years, the Philippines government has tried to grow the economy by encouraging and even helping to send people overseas or to help people move from an island like Marinduque to Manila to work. The problem is this doesn't. The economic growth that happens from this doesn't take into account the emotional and mental toll that this takes on. On a culture that deeply values family ties. When you ship the dad of a family from Marinduque to Manila for six months or someone from Iloilo to Hong Kong for six years, it brings in money, but it doesn't consider the strained and broken relationships brought about by the distance and the neglect. It really does create a problem. And then in the local community, yes, money is coming back to that family. But now there's a single mom with multiple kids that she's trying to raise on her own. Those kids are hard to raise without a dad. And so the Philippines solution to the not exporting is creating all kinds of other issues within the Philippines. However, when you hire someone online, that means that dad, that dad doesn't have to go leave their island or their city and go work in Manila or go work in Hong Kong or go work on a cruise ship in Florida for years and years. That dad gets to stay home with his family. He doesn't have to leave the island to send money back and neglect his family. He gets to stay there with his family and support them at home. When you hire someone, there's a family that has kids growing up with both parents. There's grandparents who probably aren't raising their grandkids now because the parents are gone. In another country or on another island, those parents are not home raising their own kids, which creates strong families and strong communities. So when you hire an ofs, you're doing a lot of good and you should be proud of that. You're helping families and communities. And look, it's like 98% of people on OnlineJobs ph are good, honest, loyal, hardworking people. Yes. There's the 2% who are trying to work multiple jobs and just trying to get paid. And they don't really care about the quality of work. But most people on there really care. They want a good job. They want to support their family. They want to stay where they are. They don't want to be hopping from job to job. So finding good people just really is not that hard. And when you do, when you find someone good, this is a win, win, win, win, win.
