Ep: 293: How DISC Improves Hiring Choices
24 Nov 2025 · 4 min
Russell, who runs a nine-figure business, started requiring DISC tests from job applicants after realizing he kept hiring people like himself, which failed for detail-oriented roles. DISC profiles match personality types to jobs: high S and C for detail work, high I for social roles. OnlineJobs.ph is adding DISC-based search to filter candidates.

Welcome to the secret sauce of outsourcing that makes you better at outsourcing to the Philippines. This is episode 293, how disc improves hiring choices. So this is an interesting concept of a test, a personality test and how it helps you. So here's how this came about. So last year at Lake Powell. Every year we go to Lake Powell for at least a week and usually we do it a couple times a year. There wasn't a lot of talk about business except from my son who is now on a mission in the Philippines who is. He's super obsessive about things and he's obsessive about business and he wanted to talk about it nonstop. But how can you blame him? So Russell, who was a good friend of mine, was with us. He runs a nine figure business and how could you not talk with someone like that about business when you're there for eight days and you're a budding entrepreneur? For the most part though, we kept in a vacation mode, but it was this one nugget that came out of a business conversation while we were there. So Russell has a unique take on hiring. The very first thing he looks at when hiring is a disc profile. And if you don't know what disc is, search search disc profile on Google. It's a personality test that people take that will tell you what their strengths and weaknesses are. So yeah, his first step isn't to look at their profile or their skills. His first step is to look at their disc profile. He requires anybody who applies to take a disc test and submit that with their application. Why? Because in the past, everybody he hired sucked. He would start looking at profiles and applications and he'd be like, oh, that person's so awesome or this person's so awesome. And then he'd hire them and they would suck at their jobs. And what he realized was he was looking for people who were just like him. He was looking at someone who was super driven and motivated and not someone who was going to be detail oriented for the job, which required a detail oriented person. And we all do this. We all go through things with our personal and personality filter. And Russell didn't know what was going on until he learned about disc when he realized he's a high D and has very low S and very low C in his personality. And so he would look through profiles and he'd always look at people and find the ones that had high and would hire them. And then it turns out that for the position he needed, he really needed a high S and they sucked at the job. So it turns out that when you use DISC to associate it with the role that you're hiring, so you figure out the role and what kind of personality this needs, and then you associate that with a disc profile like, oh, this one requires someone who's super social and they're really committed and they're going to be there on time. You want a high I and a high C. Now, when you go to hire, the first thing you can look at is people who have high I and high C. And if people don't have on onlinejobs ph, we have people take a disc test. Not everyone has taken it, but a lot of people have taken it. There's no reason to fake something because it doesn't make someone better in one thing than another. But you can look for a high I and a high C in that situation. Now, using disc requires some knowledge of how it works. And so Russell had done an interview with Mandy Keen about this, and Mandy taught Tony Robbins how to use disc. So I did an interview with Mandy. Russell sent me her information. I did an interview with Mandy. It turned out really, really awesome and super relevant to hiring ofs. So I'm going to link to that interview with Mandy. Just so you know, it's about an hour long. It's long. But once you understand disc, you'll use it in everything you ever hire and it will make your hiring decisions so much easier. Right from the start. You can weed people out super, super easy because, oh, I need a high S and a high C and you're a high D. That's just not going to work for me. So I don't even need to look at this profile. Also, just so you know, at onlinejobs ph, we are about to implement the ability to search through profiles and filter them based on disc scores. So you'll be able to filter super easily based on people's high I or high S or whatever it is, and that'll make understanding disc that much more valuable to you for your hiring in the future.
