John Jonas (host) discusses how family culture — feeling like part of a caring, family-like organization — affects the engagement and work quality of Filipino online specialists (OFS). Team members reported that lack of belonging, lack of respect, and reduced sense of care (especially as teams scale and remote work increases) lead to decreased interest, lower quality output, and more mindless work. The episode is one in a short series; the next episode will present solutions from the team, followed later by host-led solutions.

Welcome to the Secret Sauce of Outsourcing podcast that's dedicated to making you better at hiring and working with online Filipino specialists. This is episode 95, family culture and how it affects Filipinos working mindlessly. So this is episode number five of I think I'm gonna have seven about why Filipino workers sometimes work mindlessly. And when I asked my team about this, the one answer that came back consistently that really surprised me was when they talked family culture. So what I learned was when they don't feel like they belong to something, they don't belong to the organization. They don't care about their work. This translates to a company culture. If they don't feel like they're part of it, then the work's not going to be great. So this translates into a company culture and how much they feel like they're cared for. So here are some of the quotes from my team. Some never felt that they are part of the family organization, thus they would never care. Quote here's another one quote Lack of respect from peers, colleagues at work, or even at the personal level. When we were still starting, it really felt like a family and once you were introduced to one person, we wanted to talk to each other a lot. When we had problems, I loved everyone. We would also reach out to each other when there were problems. However, the team has grown so much. The industry has changed and the work from home environment is also very different now. Next. Most Filipinos today no longer look at their online work as family as we have. They just see work with the same weight and value as they see any 8 to 5 job. So Filipinos are very caring, they're very service oriented, they're very loving. When they don't feel this being reciprocated to them, they lose interest. It's very off putting to them. If they don't feel cared for, they reciprocate that lack of care. They don't care about the work, they don't care about the quality, they don't care about the output. They don't care. They. So I'm not saying that you have to send birthday cards to your ofs or you have to do special things for them on holidays or whatever, but I'm just saying if they don't know that you care about them as a person or you don't care about them and getting their job done that you don't care for them, well, they don't really care for you either. And that is going to affect the quality of their work. Tomorrow in the next episode, I'll have solutions to this that they came up with. And then after that, I'll talk about solutions that I have worked through with my, my team.
