Entomologist Jonathan Lundgren studied 1,400 farms across 35 systems over three years, measuring soil carbon, insects, and fungi. Regenerative farms held roughly 50% more soil carbon than conventional ones. If scaled across U.S. croplands, that could offset seven years of American carbon emissions.

Questions this episode answers

About 1,400 farms over the last three years.

About 35 food/cropping systems (plus livestock systems noted).

Carbon measured down to 60 centimeters; fully regenerative farms had ~50% more carbon than conventional croplands/rangelands.

Extrapolating their measurements to all U.S. croplands and rangelands, converting to fully regenerative systems could store the equivalent of seven years' worth of U.S. annual carbon emissions (per year).

They revisit farms annually for approximately the first five years to monitor transition dynamics.
