Podcast interview (Episode 162) with pecan grower Troy Swift (Swift River Pecans). Troy describes his transition to regenerative management beginning ~2019: eliminating mowing and herbicides, drastically reducing synthetic nitrogen (from ~80–100 lb/acre down to foliar ~2.4 lb/acre), using Johnson-Su bioreactors and wood-chip spreading, experimenting with biochar and compost extracts, and hosting academic trials (Noble Research Institute, Haney/PLFA tests). He reports higher yields (some blocks 2–6× historic yields), improved nut quality, reduced fungicide/insecticide use, and major input-cost reductions.

Episode 162

Two farms: one ~60 acres (about 60 acres in man-planted hybrid pecans) and another ~200 acres (mostly native pecans)

A 35-acre field with ~600 trees on 50×50 ft spacing; trees in that orchard are ~18 years old (full production).

Historic granular N ≈ 80–100 lb actual N/acre → cut to ~40 lb → then eliminated granular N; current foliar N ≈ 2.4 lb actual N/acre.
