A short YouTube monologue (by Jonathan Cronin) examining whether debt is sinful from a Christian perspective. The speaker cites U.S. national statistics about credit card and debt prevalence, discusses that the Bible does not explicitly call debt sinful, notes risks associated with borrowing, and plans to reference scriptures and personal conclusions.
82% of Americans have a credit card. According to the Government Accountability Office 2022, 77% of Americans have some type of debt, whether that's a car payment, student loans, credit cards, home mortgage, whatever that is, 98% of those who make more than $100,000 a year have a credit card. So I'm just going to share some scriptures here, share some, just give you some thoughts there and then I'll conclude with what my thoughts are. You know, first off saying borrowing is bad. Anyone with a credit card, whether they pay it off in full that same month or they make payments also would be in sin. But that's what somebody is saying. If they say that debt is sin and the Bible actually never says debt is sin. There's definitely some negative connotations to debt and rightfully so. Debt increases risk and we should all understand that debt increases risk. There's a lot of risk in life but avoiding risk in life is a sin.
