Hark the Herald Angels Sing to Light the World Walkthrough

Jon Cheney walks through the piano arrangement of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" for the LDS Church's Light the World campaign. The left hand plays an octave higher than written, and the piece demands a quiet, fast touch with loose fingers and delicate trills to achieve its calm, smooth sound.

This song is called "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing to Light the World." Right, this one is slow and pretty. I'm going to talk about it for a second, where it comes from. So the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a Christmas kind of campaign that they do every year called Light the World. They've done it for several, quite a few years now, and They do a lot of really neat things. They do some giving machines, kind of a vending, red vending machine that they put in cities all over the world. You can go and you can buy things on that vending machine for other people, right? Pigs, goats, chickens, food, books, things that people need, right? It's charity and it's really awesome. But when they announced those and they put some videos out around this Light the World theme, theme as in, you know, topic. They have this musical theme as well that goes along with it. And I don't play it exactly, but I kind of play it in this song, and I kind of go back and forth between it and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." And so again, this is a very soft, pretty, beautiful song. Great one to play in a church, you know, a church service of any kind, or some sort of performance where you just want to feel peaceful, right? So now this one is interesting. The left hand, the way it's written, it's actually— if you read it as written like this, right, it's written an octave lower and then just an 8va. It's supposed to be the entire way through the entire song. So the left hand is actually just going to play So it's just going to be one octave up. Most of it's going to be kind of in this range. Okay, here we go. This is one of those songs where you get to practice playing piano, right? As in P, as in the, the how loud you're playing, but also let your fingers be really loose. You want to kind of nail those little trills and thrills right there. Just little, like, almost like little angels, little things, just like this little tiny high pretty thing that's watching over the song. Okay, so we go— that, that what I just played there is kind of the Light the World theme. And now we're going to go into Hark the Herald Angels Sing. So I'll play just the last little bit there and then move right into it. Okay, before I go to the next page, so in a lot of songs when you get these, right, you're speeding up and you're in your, you know, the song is getting really involved and you go louder and stuff, but this is quiet constantly, right? I'm going to play this little part again because it's really key. In order to play that quietly and fast and at the right speed like I'm playing, you really have to get that touch down. You got to learn how to hit that key fast but soft, right? Right. A lot of times this is a good exercise to hit that note like this fast. Hit it fast, but it's still quiet, right? I can hit it fast. That's easy. Anyone can do that. But can you hit it fast? Okay, now I'm doing that like really, really exaggerated. You're never really doing that, but that's the exercise. To get your fingers to really know when they've hit that key and how to pull off of it so it's really quiet. All right, I'm going to play into the next page, so— And we go right back into the Light the World theme. Again, not supposed to be flashy or big. It's supposed to be calm and smooth. Sweet and peaceful. That one again is called Hark! The Herald Angels Sing to Light the World. So tune in for the next one.
