Silver Bells Piano Walkthrough

Jon Cheney teaches his piano arrangement of Silver Bells, an intermediate to intermediate-advanced piece from his Christmas EP. The left hand mimics a bass-guitar line inspired by Relient K, moving through key changes like C-major-7 to D major with syncopated rhythms, while the right hand layers scales and melody overhead.

Okay, Silver Bells. This is from the Christmas EP. It just has 4 songs in it, but they are a little bit challenging. They take a little bit of work. They're intermediate to intermediate-advanced. I wouldn't really call them advanced. Maybe some people would, or some parts. Maybe there's some advanced sections in this book, you know, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Mary and the Manger. But this one Silver Bells is actually— it's got some— it's got a couple tough parts in it. So we're going to work through it, we're going to talk through it, I'm going to play through it here and help you understand, you know, why I wrote it the way I wrote it and how you're supposed to play certain parts. This one, the left hand, this actually I was inspired by the band Reliant K and their version of Silver Bells. And It's not, it's not like this exactly. Like, it's quite different, but I was inspired by it. And you can go listen to it, you'll hear why and why it sounds like that. But this left hand is just going to be— I say at the top here, left hand matters the entire song. You got to hit it right. The— this is your bass, right? It's your bass, kind of just— you're making it almost like a guitar, just The whole time. And it's going to change, right? You got to hit those notes in the right way at the right time, or it's not going to do what it's supposed to do. So let's just start playing through it. Um, this is a fun song. So right there. Um, it goes— so again, you got to pay attention. It's going to change a little bit there, but you got to make sure you end up there. When you hit that spot, got to make sure on the right. Now we're going to go to the melody. Okay, the left hand still matters, right? I'm going to play just the left hand, let you hear it. It's kind of fun. Close enough. G, A, E all together. So it's still providing thing. Hey, look, it's snowing a little bit out there. That's fun. All right, so Okay, so, um, this part is easy. It's really, really easy. I play, I play it once and then I play the same thing. It's a little bit different. Instead of doing thirds, I do sixths up here, but the left hand is repeated. Just up one octave, right? So if you're sight reading this and you catch that pattern, I'm going to follow that all the way through. Okay, I actually changed a little bit right there, but now I'm back to the left hand. I know is I changed the left hand. Now we're in a C major 7, maybe even a C7 major 9, right? But I do it again, right? Same thing. And right back to this. We're going to change keys. So this is— that's actually just kind of an interlude intro. Now we're right back to the same thing in a new key. Now this next part is pretty easy even though it sounds fast and complicated. So we're getting into this cool pattern now of this— that's going to That's going to continue for a lot of the next, I mean, page, page and a half, even a little bit more than that. Okay, so we've just kind of done this. So notice when you change the page there, it's going to change, right? We're going to get into that C7 to drive into that D. Okay, but again, and then it's just a D scale up, right? We're in key of D. This is all pretty straightforward. And the left hand here is going to be important. It's, it's not surprising, but it's important. I'm just going back and forth the whole time, right? That's where you hear I was inspired by the Reliant K version of Silver Bells. Um, okay, so this is what it's supposed to— so that's the left hand. Left hand just keeping this. The right hand's just going to be doing some scales. All right, so let's see if I can actually play this. Um, it's not easy. I might mess up, so I apologize, but I haven't practiced this and played it for a while. But I want you guys to see how I do this. Bad. We're gonna do that again, okay? So I got through that section. That was great. Um, you're gonna have to practice it, right? My fingers just figured it out. But this next section, you're going to kind of be bouncing back and forth, kind of. It's going to feel almost like your hands are crossing over each other a little bit. Again, we're doing this bum bum bum bum bum back and forth. I like that song. That part is actually one of my favorite parts. The left hand does a little bit of weird things there. It goes this normal pattern, then— sorry. And it's doing kind of an opposite action. Left hand's going up, right hand's going down, and so it kind of plays together like that. Your hands are kind of feeling like that. It's kind of fun. Sorry. It says clear pedal for 2 beats. Okay, so we're gonna play, um, Okay, so that's that song, um, Silver Bells. This one's fun, it's really fun, and you will enjoy playing it and learning it and trying to figure out all the syncopations. The big section here where you're— those are fun. And then, um, and then trying to figure out how to try to get all those notes, get it just right, which I did in the recording. Um, it sounds awesome, sounds really, really fun. So anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it, and on to the next one.
