#115 - Dr Tess Mauricio Two Sides of the Same Coin: Autophagy and Stem Cells
8 Mar 2021 · 58 min
Dr. Tess Mauricio, a Stanford-trained dermatologist, explains how 24-hour fasts trigger autophagy and boost stem cells from your own fat, which can be harvested and injected for facial volume, skin rejuvenation, and hair restoration. Her Beverly Hills and San Diego clinics use Rockstar plasma resurfacing and Renuvion J-Plasma for anti-aging.

Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise and I'm the number one New York Times bestselling author and leading fitness, nutrition, and peak performance trainer to the world's busiest celebrities. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Kelly Clarkson, or even Dr. Oz. My career started because in my early 20s I was out of control and addicted to sweets, carbs and salty snacks, and experts told me to simply count calories to get control. They were wrong. My passion to get control of my hunger led me to find simple ways backed by science that would turn off physical hunger as well as my emotional eating instantly. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. Well, happy Sunday night everyone. It is March 7th. You adjust my mic here. Welcome. Uh, whoa, there it is. Can you guys hear that? Am I here? We're live. What's up guys, how are you? Happy Sunday night. Uh, it is March 7th. I'm Jorge and welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. Uh, I love Sunday nights, but Sunday nights is when we always have a guest on. Tonight, tonight we have Dr. Tess Mauricio. She is the world's leading dermatologist America's favorite dermatologist. She's been on every show from Good Morning America to Dr. Oz. I met her 15 years ago on set of The Doctors— on the doc— I'm sorry, on The Talk, I should say, not The Doctors. They're both in LA with Sharon Osbourne, though, different show. And she's been on The Doctors too. I mean, this woman is everywhere. She's Stanford-trained, like I said. She keeps Paula Abdul looking gorgeous, and I love Paula. I'm honored that Dr. Tess also keeps my skin looking great. On today's show, we're going to not just talk about how to stay beautiful as you get older, um, more importantly, we're going to talk about how autophagy really can empower you. Now, it's a big, big word. What is autophagy? It's the end result of doing a long fast, like a 23-hour fast, where your body is allowed to do housekeeping. And that's important. A lot of people think that the only reason to fast is to lose weight. And this goes beyond weight. Yes, you'll drop 2 pounds each day. That's the Zero Hunger Plan, which is great, but also Zero Hunger Plan gives you the ability to extend your lifespan by doing extended fasting. And so we're gonna talk about that. That's kind of the other side of the coin because here's what you generate. You generate stem cells and these stem cells, oh man, they're magic. They literally allow your body to repair, renew. It's like the fountain of youth. It really, really, really is. And it helps you heal your body. It's powerful. And autophagy is how you get rid of the old stuff, the damaged cells. It cleans out the broken, all that stuff. So we're going to talk about that and how you can utilize stem cells from doing an extended fast and also how you can amplify that. Because if you want to really turn back the clock, you can also create stem cells using adipose tissue. And that's one of the things Dr. Tess talks about because she does this in her clinics. She has clinics in Beverly Hills, San Diego. She's Southern California. People fly into her to have procedures done. She's that good. She's this petite, gorgeous woman. We're about the same age. She's a year younger than me. And, um, just phenomenal, gorgeous Filipino lady. Love her. Uh, and she went to Stanford. So she's on the show today, guys. I'm so excited for you guys to meet her. Um, she was going to come last night. I might as well tell you because so many of you guys have been thanking— or not thanking, wishing me well on my birthday. So I want to thank you guys for all the well wishes. I turned 50 last night. Uh, my birthday is March 6th, 1971, and, uh, that was 50 years ago yesterday. So now, um, I'm excited. I'm an official part of AARP. I, I actually joined them last year because I'm a, a contributor to AARP. You guys know what that is if you're over 50. It's a great association. They're a lobbyist group in DC for us old folks. But, uh, age is just a number because even though the number's big, um, I still feel 49. I honestly don't even feel 49. I feel, if you were to ask me, I feel like 28. And I know I don't look 28, but I think I can get away with 48 for sure, maybe even a little younger. And regardless, I'm excited, guys. Thank you for all the well wishes on social media. It means the world to me. And I had such a great time with my family and friends. If you guys are listening, thank you guys. I love all my inner circle. So it was such a fun, special night. We played a game I love called Poetry for Neanderthals. It's such a fun game to do with a small group of friends. But thank you guys for your well wishes. Hope you had a great night. Special thanks to Dry Farm Wines as well. They provided me a lot of beautiful sugar-free, sulfate-free wines. They're European wines, and I don't drink that often, but oh, I do on my birthday, and I had the best time. So thank you, Dry Farms. Thank you, Todd White and Mark and all the guys over there at Dry Farms. It was delicious, delicious, delicious, delicious. So I love that stuff. So let's do this, guys. So in about a little more than a month, it's going to be amazing. This is the best. It's the culmination of my entire 20 years in publishing, and I've been a trainer for 25 years, and I've always told my clients, um, you know, that fitness begins in the kitchen, and it really, really does. And it also begins by understanding that your body is more capable than you know, and so you can do extended fasting on a regular— it's a lifestyle. And, you know, I do it, uh, for, you know, I basically have one meal a day, and that's what I follow. I also do extended fasting for 3 days on occasion. So it's super powerful to restore your body. We're going to talk about that in just a minute with Dr. Tess. So let me set the context, guys. Imagine a conversation with the world's leading dermatologist. She's going to talk about our amazing body and really how we can restore it using autophagy through this process of fasting. She herself has been fasting for 5 years, and what's great is autophagy, which cleans out the broken and damaged cells, is powerful, but it also stimulates stem cells. So let's talk about how to use that to regenerate and repair and heal the body. Here is my dearest friend, Dr. Tess Mauricio.
Well, welcome everyone to a very special podcast. Uh, today is, is such a pleasure for me because I'm going to be sitting down in just a moment here with a dear friend of mine. She is America's favorite dermatologist. She's my dermatologist. We met, uh, almost 10 years ago. I want to say it was 10 years ago on set at CBS Studios with Sharon Osbourne, and we were on the set of The Talk, and I was doing a weight loss segment. She was doing a beauty segment, and she truly is gorgeous. She is Stanford trained and She's in San Diego, but she's also in Beverly Hills. And tonight we're gonna be talking about, um, beauty, but we're gonna be talking about some of the cutting-edge procedures. And Tess, are you there? Dr. Tess?
I'm here. Hi, Jorge. Hello to your global audience.
Oh, we're so happy you're here. Thank you for making more time for us. We, we've had you on the show a few times, and I think last time was, uh, was amazing. We talked about autophagy and, uh, and I think we're gonna talk a little bit else. And you had mentioned earlier to me, we were chatting before we went live here about how You're doing a 24-hour fast right now. Is that true?
Yes. Yes. I'm going to go for more than 24, but right now I'm approaching 24 hours and I feel pretty good. I feel pretty good. And, you know, we're definitely going to talk about fasting, the benefits of it, autophagy, which we covered last segment. And I— you told me that it was so well received. And so we're going to take it a notch up.
I think— I mean, I think it's the fountain of youth, partly, you know, and the science has shown that. And so I'm excited. We're going to get into that with you. I mean, I know they don't necessarily teach you everything at Stanford, but this is something that obviously you've developed over how many years now? Because I feel like you have had this incredible, uh, beauty, um, what do you want to call it? It's like, it's not a spa, it's much more, it's a clinic, but you have been working with, with celebrities. And most recently, I have to give you a shout out because, um, you were featured in The Hollywood Reporter. Is that true? Just not just a few weeks ago. Do you have it there?
Share it with us.
What did they say? Oh, I love it.
You know what, what they What he said is aging was brought on by 2020. Don't you agree? I really feel my patients are complaining just this past year because of COVID and all the stress. We've all aged so much. And how Hollywood is fighting back and what they covered is our Rockstar treatment, which is pure plasma energy. Yeah. We're doing plasma skin resurfacing without any downtime, which is why we call it the Rockstar, is our celeb, my celebrity patients. Especially in Beverly Hills, cannot do downtime, but they want to look fresh, they want to improve their wrinkles, they want to improve sagging.
And that's what was in The Hollywood Reporter. Yeah, they, they featured the rock star briefly. I mean, you've worked with people like Paula Abdul. She was recently on the show The Mask, right? And she—
The Mask dancer.
Forever young. I mean, I loved her on American Idol. I loved her with Janet Jackson back in the day. I mean, she is completely gorgeous, and I know she's one of your clients. I'm one of your I feel pretty good. You know, my birthday was just recently. Well, I've turned 50 now and I feel like, um, I don't feel it. You know, I feel like, uh, you've kept me young for so many years. You've kept my skin beautiful. I've done the Rockstar over the years. I've done other things and you always customize it for everyone, but give us maybe one secret from Paula. I mean, she recently, she does the Rockstar too, right?
Yeah, she does actually. You know, one of the reasons we named it Rockstar is really inspired by Paula because she, she obviously, you know, um, she does She doesn't keep her age a secret, but everybody always says she looks amazing. She doesn't want to go under the knife and she wants to stay looking natural. And that's really the goal. And the Rockstar is perfect for her. She loves it. She, you know, and we actually used it a lot to get her ready for The Masked Dancer. And everyone raved about how young and natural and fresh she looked on the show.
So, and if people want to do that at the end of the show, we'll give them everything so they can find out about your clinic. Because the great thing about 2021 is we can do virtual Zoom consultations. Right. And you guys do that anywhere. And people come in around the country. I know people from New York. I know people— Paula travels the world and she comes to see you. I'm lucky that I get to see you because I'm in San Diego and you, you have an office here in San Diego, but Beverly Hills has your office there. So tell us, for tonight you're going to kind of give us a little bit of a, of a Stanford TED Talk, but we're going to keep it at a 7th grade level so we can all understand it. Because I feel like stem cells is something we had talked about, and that is something you specialize in. For those that doing autophagy, but maybe just talk to us about what, why that is such a big deal. Because I feel like as medicine is advancing, more and more people, I mean, I just had on a few weeks ago, Dave Asprey. He's the creator of the Bulletproof Cafe, the Bulletproof Diet. He is, uh, they say the father of biohacking and he's 48 years young. So he's in our age group, he's late forties and now I'm 50, but I feel like stem cells are something he's done to his entire body. You know, he did it to his scalp. He's done it to his spine. He's done it. I think he, he mentioned on the podcast, he had 4 people simultaneously injecting stem cells into him. And I was like blown away because, you know, he's one of the premier biohackers out there. But can you kind of tell someone who's listening for the first time, and if they don't know what— they've heard of stem cells, but we don't know what it is— how would you describe it, Tess, for us?
Well, you know, stem cells are really seeds, you know, are seeds that can differentiate into cells. And obviously every part us is made out of, made out of cells. And so stem cells is kind of, you know, starting from the seed. And there are different ways, and there are different kinds of stem cells. And obviously, in, in what Dave Asprey was talking about, you know, he— there's different sources of stem cells as well, right? It can be from umbilical cord, there's placenta stem cells, there's also stem cells that can be harvested from our own fat, and we do that at our clinic at Em Beauty Clinics. It's one of the fields that I am helping pioneer, that's adipose-derived regenerative stem cells. And, um, so, or we can boost our own internal stem cell activity so that we can optimize regeneration, repair, and healing. And so that's really how you think about stem cells. And So if you were thinking about biohacking, where obviously we want to age as well as we can, you're 50, I'm gonna be 50.
Your birthday's coming up too, November, right?
Yes, so I'll be 50 in November. And seriously, Jorge, we've known each other for almost 10 years. I have been doing my own forms of biohacking. I have had stem cells from my own fat injected for my scalp for hair rejuvenation. People comment all the time about my hair.
You have the most gorgeous hair. I mean, you're like a beauty queen. You really are. And I mean, people think you're in your— you're like 28, 29. And obviously we're some— I mean, you're not 50. I'm a little older than you, but what is— I mean, is that part of it? Obviously you take good care of your skin, but stem cells. So tell us where we can, I guess, start from the head, walk, walk our way down the body. How can they be utilized?
And as you mentioned, we have patients who travel from all over the world, you know, before COVID but, um, to our clinic, because in a single visit with us, what I can do is I can harvest through just local anesthesia, a tiny little puncture in the skin, harvest some fat. And we know that adipose, our own fat cells, are rich in regenerative stem cells. And so, we can harvest it, we can homogenize, size it down, and we get a product called NanoFat, which is rich in stem cells and also growth factors. And that can be injected to basically create natural hair restoration. So essentially, if you're starting to lose hair, thinning hair, we can plant new seeds, your own stem cells, in the area. And then we also harvest platelet-rich plasma from blood. This are growth factors. So think of growth factors as fertilizer. So now we can transplant your seeds and fertilize to really help create incredible hair restoration.
So you have that into your hair because it's so—
yes, I have—
gorgeous. It's gorgeous.
About a year and a half ago, I had that done. And then on the same day, that same product, Micronized Fat, was injected for natural volumization for my face. Because as we all age, we lose volume. And if you are losing weight, planning to lose weight, weight. But, you know, volume loss can make you look older, can make the skin saggier. And so replacing it with your own fat is really incredible. And also, because you're getting stem cells in there, you also get a natural rejuvenation of the skin. You get a glow, youthful glow, a natural brightening and improvement of sun damage. And, um, we can apply it directly on the skin after laser resurfacing, our Time Machine procedure, and microneedle your own stem cells and growth factors on your skin. So that's what can be done in one day.
And literally in a day, I can also get it, um, IV.
It can be administered intravenously, and I've had that done. How? So the fat is processed in a different way, and what we're getting now It's a cellular stromal vascular fraction. And we, you know, it's no longer fat. There's no more part of it that's fat. And it's given IV through an IV drip. So you get hundreds of millions of your own regenerative cells. So it goes to areas that are injured, inflamed, aging. And so I've really been kind of replaced inside and out.
So you've been utilizing this yourself and obviously your celebrity clients. And I know I'm in line next now that I'm 50. 50, please. But tell us, for anyone out there, obviously we talked about this before, uh, we did the show and before we started recording, the idea of a little bit of the fasting, because that can help too. Can you give people— because I know we talked about it in the previous episode, but kind of a refresher course, and then to walk us through how this works? Because if someone is watching or listening and they want to come to see you or do a virtual consultation, I know it can sound scary scary, but you don't make it scary. You are the most— you have the magic touch. That's all I have to say. You've always, you've, you've, you know how to wave the magic wand. And then I feel like in 10 minutes you make me 10 years younger, seriously. But share with us how it could start with, with fasting, because, you know, I'm a big fan of that. I don't like to call it fasting. I call it a zero hunger window where you're not hungry for hopefully 24 hours. And you've been super— you're like Wonder Woman here. I was going to say Superwoman, But one of them, because you didn't even use electrolytes, you just did a straight fast, right, Tess?
Well, you know, okay, first of all, there's a lot of data. We know a low-calorie diet has really been long associated with longevity. And then now, absolutely fasting and the concept of autophagy. When you are fasting, where you really are cleaning, it's like a cleanup and a reset. Reset that your body and your cells do. And so I've been doing some form of fasting now for, I'd say, about 5 years, Jorge. So it's kind of like at the beginning when, you know, where that was just the concept, but I looked at the data, it made sense to me. And I truly feel that that is part of why when people meet me, or my patients have been my patients, I've been in practice now for almost 20 years, they're like, you look the same, you look better, you're gonna be too. But you do. Well, and you know, help everyone part Nutrition is, is very important, but fasting specifically, um, there's a lot of data, um, you know, there's studies from MIT, um, that actually looked at studies of fasting versus non-fasting mice looking at the regeneration and the stem cell activity for— from, you know, intestinal cells. And they found that even with 24-hour 24-hour fasting, the mice that were fasting had about double the regeneration, you know, than the ones that are not fasting. This is only 24 hours. Obviously, there are a lot of special diets out there, special programs that advocate 24 to 72-hour fasts. And I know that you have your Zero Hunger longer plan. Um, you know, if you have— you know, I definitely recommend that you do this under your doctor's guidance, especially if you have other medical issues. But, you know, the data is really showing that even if you can do— now, I mean, everyone's heard of intermittent fasting, right?
Yes, of course.
You can do 12, 14 hours. It's really good for you. It can accelerate your weight loss. It can really jump your cells for regeneration, um, and it can help repair, decrease, um, decrease, um, immunologic response and inflammation, which is linked to aging.
Yeah, I always remember, um, you know, we had last Sunday Dr. Jason Fung, and he's in Toronto, and he, um, I mean, he's— his whole career, you know, he originally was a, um, I believe a nerf— nephrologist. How do you say that? It's a doctor of—
kidney doctor.
And some of his patients needed to lose weight. He reminds me of a lot of the people we've had on the podcast that are doctors where they became weight loss experts because a lot of their patients couldn't do surgeries because they were too overweight. And he now has dedicated his entire life to intermittent fasting. He runs a clinic in Toronto and people do the same. They fly out to him from around the world to really work with the best. And I feel like for any woman out there, whether, um, you know, she's in her 50s, maybe 60s, maybe 70s. And she thinks that, you know, because I, I, I, as a man, I, I, I always work with beautiful women. I've worked with people like Kelly Clarkson. I've worked with Kelly Ripa, even Wendy Williams, and they all do a form of intermittent fasting. Mm-hmm. But what would you say for someone who right now in their head, because I know the way I was raised, I was raised to be a little Latino Catholic boy where food was love. And if you didn't eat what grandma gave you, you were a bad boy, you know, and that's only skinny people were sick, but I hate to say it. I know my grandma, bless her heart. She's now been gone for 15 years.
She died at 103 though.
She only weighed maybe 110 pounds, but she wanted me to be like 200 pounds. But we know that the way to make it to 100, right, is by really, um, is it by, by maximizing these strategies and not overeating, right? So for anyone out there that thinks intermittent fasting could be it, but you know, some people always criticize Kelly, um, Kelly Ripa, that she has an eating disorder. And when I was on her show most recently, you know, she loved that the book I had written at the time, The Cruise Control Diet, was about this. And it really gave legitimacy to people that are doing fasting. What would you tell someone who thinks, well, this is an eating disorder, it's not good? Like, they're going to look at you and say, oh my gosh, you're, you're obsessed. And they're going to think I'm crazy doing a 3-day fast, but I know Jason Fung Fung as a man and as a doctor really gave us the science last week, but as a doctor as well from Stanford and from someone who does it herself and is gorgeous and you don't, I mean, you're not wasted away. Just help us understand how it's—
far from that.
Yeah.
You look gorgeous.
You have great energy.
Yeah. I think you have to look at the science and, you know, the, the, the science behind it is that, um, if you can do even 12-hour fasts, fast. Yes, it really can help, you know, especially, you know, especially if you have diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, it really can do that. And, and it actually is not that hard. If you just, you know, I mean, if you talk to your doctor and they want you to lose weight, they'll probably tell you stop eating after a certain time. And then if you just kind of keep going and not consume any any carbs, you know, up until maybe— I actually don't eat until about lunch. And that, that, that's about 14 hours of a fast. And it's not something that I feel like I'm depriving myself. I don't feel like it's really hard, especially if I'm busy. Yeah. You know, usually I just don't— I don't eat breakfast. I go straight to work, and then I'm busy, and then I I eat a salad with good protein for lunch. And then because culturally we come from kind of similar culture, then I eat my dinner with my family. My dad cooks at home. So I eat at home. Oh, I love that. And so I do enjoy that because, you know, this has to be a lifestyle.
Yes.
A lifestyle change. And just like anything, you know, maybe hard at the beginning, but the more you do it and the more you understand You understand why you're doing it. So I think, you know, making yourself knowledgeable about the science behind this, then you will be more motivated to actually do it. And it does make a difference in the long term. Obviously, short term, if you're trying to lose weight, drop your cholesterol, drop your glucose, if you're, you know, you already have diabetes and high cholesterol, hypertension, but the long run, the longevity, living long, long, living without disease, living without pain, looking your best.
Yes.
Any age. Um, so I think there's a lot of incentive.
Well, I was sold, you know, uh, last month, almost a month ago, Woman's World did a feature on the Zero Hunger Plan. And I feel like so many of these clients of ours, and we have new listeners from that because they mentioned our podcast. And I'm so grateful to women that are, you know, in, in throughout the world really that want to improve their health. And I think a lot of people, maybe give us a little, a little what I call think fit. There's a lot of people when they turn 50, I know for me, you know, this last year has been, there's a lot of stress with COVID and family, and then we can't see our family. You know how that is. It's been hard for everyone. If someone thinks they're too old to try, you know that's not true. If anyone knows, you're, the age is just a number. I think it's you, Tess. What would you just say to, to a woman or man that maybe is in their 50s, 60s. You have clients in their 70s, correct?
Yes, absolutely. I mean, even 80s. So we always have stem cells. You know, I tell people, as long as you're alive, you have a capacity to regenerate, repair, and heal yourself.
Yes.
And so, you know, you're never— it's never too late. Obviously, you can't go back as far as like, hey, I wish I did this before. Well, you can only —look forward. You can only do today and the future. Yeah. But it's never too late. You know, same thing we tell dermatologists, we tell patients, okay, even if you've had skin cancer, sun damage, if you start using your sunscreen now, it's still going to make a difference. If you stop smoking now, it's still going to make a difference in the long-term health and beauty of your skin. And so make the change today and you'll be surprised. Just kind of a day-to-day thing. You know, and after a while you'll be surprised at how much better you feel and how great you look.
No, it's so critical. And I think you embody everything you've talked about. And I feel like the thing I love about you, not only have you been so gracious to always give me the best strategies to keep me looking good at 50, and, you know, and I know vitamin D is important because I, I take that. And I loved your Lively Healthy Skin. I was using that with the collagen. You have the Lively, um, sleep product, is that right? Yes. And you have the Focus. I feel these products are cutting edge and You mentioned the website where people can get some of your ingestibles, but they're the best. I hope you bring back the collagen someday because I love it.
We will. We will. Loved it. That's definitely going to, that's definitely going to be in your future. Good. Because collagen was so important.
We did that on the first podcast. We talked about what collagen did. And I feel like, you know, in today's day and age and being 2021, what would you say for anyone that wants to tamper or not tamper, uh, tinker, tinker with stem cells and get their stem cells going. I mean, I would say do 24 hours. I know Jason Funk says to try to hit almost 72 hours. That's why I do that. And for those that may be, uh, cautious, if they wanted to actually do what you do in your clinic, which is like, I believe, a beauty spa, because I think you take people and give them the most important tool out there. Once they get their health back and their beauty back, is you give people confidence, you know, Tess. I feel like you've given me a sense of confidence where I can be on camera like we are right now, and I feel my best, you know. And I'm 50, and you have taken care of my skin. I just feel like I get, I get the rock star treatment with you, literally. Just, I feel like a VIP. And I know I'm not a celebrity like Paula Abdul, but for anyone out there that wants to do that, what would be— give us an example of a typical— if they were to visit you for a day, and if someone was coming in to visit, I mean, obviously they would start with the consultation, and we'll give them all that information too, right? Because it's going to be free. You're going to be able to offer to everyone watching? I mean, that's a lot.
We are, we're, we're offering free, um, virtual consultation by Zoom, FaceTime. I have my, you know, cosmetic consultants who are handling that. And then if you want me to actually do your consultation, you basically pay a $250 hold fee, which goes towards any treatment or any product that you purchase. But essentially, we're going to create a custom customized plan for you. Um, and, and we at M Beauty Clinic, it's really beyond what most dermatology offices do, beyond peels and lasers. We are into what's called regenerative aesthetics, where we're harvesting your own growth factors and your own stem cells, and we combine that with these incredible energy-based technologies like the Pure Plasma technology, the RockStar. We combine it with lasers, fractional radio frequency device, and different modalities along with nutritional supplementation. And, you know, we care for you as a whole person, and that's very, very important. And really, studies have shown that, you know, if you do, if you are treated by someone who treats you and cares for you as a whole person, if you have a good rapport your healing will be optimized and your results will be optimized. So really, we take care from head to toe. Yeah. And inside and out. And so anything that's bothering you, we probably have something to address that. And you'd be surprised, like I mentioned, how much can be done in a single visit.
Yeah. And, and I think if anyone is listening to this and saying, I want to come talk to you or your team, I feel like feel like it's super— you more than anyone in your entire team, because I've met everyone at your office in San Diego. I've not met your LA team, but I feel like you select the best people. Your husband is also part of the team, sort of. He's also Stanford-trained. James, uh, tell us how he gets involved, because you do do procedures that are also more— I don't want to say they're surgeries, but explain some of the special procedures you do that obviously bring and more, more assistance and even your husband, right? Sure.
So, you know, we, we do a lot of hair restoration.
Hey, it's Jorge, and I just wanted to interrupt the show just for a moment to invite you to head on over and sign up for my Zero Hunger email to get radical control over your sugar, carb, and salty snack food cravings. And if this is something you want to conquer and make lifestyle, the newsletter is important. It will really give you tools to keep building that momentum to create a lifestyle where you're in control of sugar and carbs. So if that sounds good, check it out. Simply go to zerohungerplan.com. I'll spell it for you, it's with a Z, Z-E-R-O, zerohungerplan.com, and it's all free. I'll see you there. Let's get back to the show.
And that is both platelet-rich plasma to what's called ALMI, autologous lipocyte micronized injection. This is harvesting fat using stem cells and injecting it for hair restoration to, you know, follicular unit extraction hair transplantation. And so James has had all of these procedures himself. We always practice what we preach at M Beauty Clinic, so He really is passionate about hair and hair restoration, so he gets involved there. When we do the regenerative IV stem cell therapy, James is the one who personally processes the adipose fat down to the stromal cellular fraction. And, you know, we start the IV, and then he's the one that actually helps.
So, for example, that one, so people understand a little better, so you would— it's not a surgery to extract the fat, or is there a little incision made?
It's a little, yes. So it's a little— how do you get it? Local, like, local liposuction. Okay. I know the area.
And you can do normal lipo as well, right, if people want that? That's more traditional. I mean, there are ways to save time. I mean, if you, if you have the budget, I mean, that lipo can be helpful, and then you utilize that fat for stem cells.
I mean, correct. So we, we have many, many patients that actually opt to do that, Jorge. So they have unwanted wanted. I mean, they're, they've lost weight and they still have, you know, residual love handles or a little area, um, that's a little sculpting, shall we say. Correct. And I do what's called liposculpture, and so I really shape, meticulously shape and remove the areas of fat that's stubborn. And then instead of throwing away that incredible reservoir for stem cells, yeah, you can use it repurposing Or some places where you want to plant seeds, you want to grow more hair follicles.
So when you say seeds, what do you mean seeds? Like hair follicles? Stem cells. Yeah.
Oh, the stem cells. Stem cells are able to really, you know, you can place it in different places of the body and it has ability to mimic—
Dave Asprey did this. Give us an example. What are some, what are 3 spots that would be popular or useful?
So hair, so hair. So I Um, so the stem cells, uh, they are basically not yet differentiated, right? So they're kind of at the starting point. They're babies. They don't know what they're going to become yet.
You can put them anywhere?
Yes. I don't think that is the magic of the— that is the magic you do. So, so the entire mechanism is, is really, you know, they're still figuring out, but we know the endpoint is that when you put it Yes, it works because we have many patients. I'm actually finishing a paper on this Almi hair procedure utilizing adipose-derived stem cells, and we've had incredible results for patients who are not ready to have a hair transplantation, are really, really psychologically affected by hair loss, even younger people. And so, so this is something that can be done. And when you inject it here, here, it actually helps, uh, you know, so you can project into the face in place of a filler or in place of—
yes, so you can literally give that face volume from those stem cells. But then does the skin also— it transforms. It's not just a volume, it also creates the skin's like regeneration, or— correct.
And Jorge, I've never done that. That is, yeah, that is the benefit of utilizing your own fat for volumization and rejuvenation. If you're just injecting a filler, say a hyaluronic acid filler, yes, you can volumize, you can create, recreate structure, but you don't have a regenerative process that happens that you do get when you use your own stem cells from fat. And so that's the advantage. And that's why when I wanted that, um, and that's what you— volume, because look how gorgeous Your skin is fabulous.
I mean, and you're going to be 50 in November, right?
Yes, proudly, because age is just a number. You know, when you look good, you feel good, you're confident. Yeah. You really, you know, you can celebrate your birthdays and you don't have to be depressed with, you know, milestone birthdays like 50. No, you should be over the hill, right? No.
As Steve Harvey always told me, he said, Jorge, life begins at 60. So we still have 10 more years. Totally. We're still not even born yet.
We're young.
Are. So wow, so these stem cells— so the face, the hair— would be a third place some of your patients maybe?
Um, so hands. So hands, hands. And show us your hands, by the way.
You have the hands of a teenager.
So yeah, so thank you so much.
If you guys can watch us on YouTube, she looks gorgeous. Yeah, show the—
show people's age. So you can start seeing the tendons, you can start seeing, uh, the vessels. So you can see And, and you can put the fat back there to volumize, plump the skin, and then it also rejuvenates this, the, the, this, um, the skin. It removes sun damage as well. And it can be combined with laser treatments. And we can put your stem cells, the nanofat, on the surface of your skin, and we can microneedle it so that you're actually absorbing stem themselves topically. So this is all done in one visit.
And there's that— what— now I know a lot of my clients have stretch marks, they have skin they want to get removed. I always tell them that autophagy helps recoil skin, but can you do any of those procedures too? I don't know if you can help with, with scar tissue or extra skin. Is that something you guys do?
Absolutely, absolutely. So yes, uh, we, we can use, uh, our— the concept of the Time Machine procedure which is a combination of some energy-based resurfacing, whether it's laser, whether it's a fractional radiofrequency, uh, platelet-rich plasma, or, um, uh, nanofat plus microneedling and injecting it in the areas. That can be done. Um, we also have an incredible, uh, technology called the Renuvion J-Plasma technology that we combine with tumescent liposculpture. It's all done under local anesthesia, so you don't have to go under general Yeah. And so we, I sculpt away the fat that you don't want. And while the areas are still numb through the same opening, I can introduce the Renuvion J-Plasma device underneath the skin and it instantly contracts the skin. What? And over time builds collagen. So this really makes it, you know, for many people makes a tummy tuck, you know, not necessary anymore.
So, and you're not removing the tissue itself, it's not an incision or a cut, right? It just completely takes the skin and— how do you describe it?
It kind of contracts like a Saran wrapping effect that happens. Uh, so, so the, the, the bands that connect the skin to the underlying, um, structure— so you can think of them as little bands, uh, when the J-Plasma technology is introduced underneath the skin, it kind of shrinks wraps and contracts them instantly. And then that heating over time creates new collagen. So it does improve the quality and texture of the skin. It's really phenomenal. And you can use it not just for the abdomen, you can use it for arms, you can use it for, you know, thighs, inner thighs as well. So areas where you have loose skin, you have a— and you don't want that surgical incision, you don't want the big scar, you don't want to be put under general anesthesia.
I think everyone listening, I call them my salty beauties, you know, because these women are all using electrolytes to fast, but they're beautiful, obviously on the inside, they're beautiful on the outside. But I feel like you're giving us permission to be our best. And I think we need that because we forget to take care of ourselves. And I feel like, I remember Oprah always said that, you know, being healthy is a delicate balance between being selfish and selfless. Sure, you want to help others, but I feel like it's— you got to take care of yourself too, because it gives you that, that spark. And I will always remember, maybe share with everyone, what was your inspiration to get into this kind of medicine? Because I think you have seen lives changed where people's spark comes back, right, Tess? Because sometimes, whether it's hair loss or a wrinkle, or just— it could be anything, an imperfection of some sort. Short, it robs people of, of a spark, doesn't it, Tess? And I feel like people listening right now, if they want that spark back, why is it okay at 50, 60, 70, and you said even the 80s, to, to reclaim it, right?
You know, I mean, before I, I went into dermatology because I really observed how even changing someone, treating someone for acne, psoriasis, eczema, because the skin obviously Obviously it's visible to the outside world. So, you know, you, you see people who are avoiding conversation, avoiding dating, uh, you know, hiding themselves in clothes with their hair, um, not living their best life, not living their full potential because of all those skin issues. And then when we treat them, you see a totally different person, one who's outgoing, happy, hopeful. And so then that's when I realized this is what I want to do. And now there's so much that we can do really beyond just improving the skin. It's really improving hair loss. We're shaping bodies. You know, I just did a mommy makeover and she was a beautiful, you know, in her early 40s. And everyone asked her if she, you know, if she was pregnant. Pregnant. They always asked her, when are you due? Because of her abdomen. Yes. And we did the lipo, we did the Reduvion J-Plasma, and I just saw her. She's 2 weeks out and she's wearing like— she has her shirt tucked in, she's walking with confidence. Her husband is so happy because she's so happy now. And she's like, no one's ever gonna ask me if I'm pregnant again. That life is And so these are transformations that is obtainable.
The technology is in a day. I mean, you can go back 10 days, 10 years, literally. I mean, you've done things for me that you've— in 10 minutes, I'm 10 years younger. But you can take people even further in a day. If you have a day with Dr. Tess, I mean, you can do a lot, right, Dr. Espósito?
People are gonna call you. Imagine Yes, you can do magic from head to toes. And now more than ever, there's really no excuse to live life kind of blah. You know, COVID, I think, made us realize that, you know, it's a gift. Life is a gift. Every day is a gift. And so we really need to make the most of it. There's so much in our lives right now that's out of our control. And even though 2020, you would think that people would not come into the clinic, practices like mine have seen a boom because people want to take care of themselves. They want to finally do something that will help boost their confidence, their self-esteem, and their happiness. We need this for our mental well-being and psychological well-being. They're so, you know, inter, uh, connected. You can't really separate how you look and how you feel. You really can't.
No, I think mental health these days more than ever. I mean, you've known me for so many years, and, you know, I've struggled over the years with many issues. I've, I've, you know, I've, I've been a, a kind of a test subject for not just the fitness but for the mental health. And I can tell you, when I come see you, I leave radiating. I just leave there, you know, a little feeling a little worn out sometimes, as I've had a— COVID was tough on all of us, right, Tess? Sure. And it was tough on me. And I'm saying that you have done so many beautiful things to help me regain my confidence. I just want everyone know— everyone to know that's listening and watching us that you are probably, in my opinion, not just the most educated and really knowledgeable, but truly you have this heart that cares so much, and you're such a nurturer. I feel like maybe the way your mother, your father, you know, because you're all from the Philippines, but I, I feel like there's so much love there, you know. And your clinic is like visiting, uh, your family, isn't it? It's just the most beautiful place, even in Beverly Hills. And you know, a lot of people in Beverly Hills aren't that nice, but you are.
I'm— no, Jorge, thank you for saying all that. I got goosebumps while you're saying, because that is the goal for You know, my goal when I, when I became a dermatologist, to utilize the best technologies, but ultimately the goal is to really help my patients live their most confident, happiest, you know, full self. And we definitely have so many ways to do that. And science is really showing that. I like to tell people, you know, educate yourself, even like simple things things like getting Botox, there's now correlation. Yes. With happiness and not having these angry, sad wrinkles. Yes. You know? And so, so things like that, there is a biofeedback that happens. And now there's also the Zoom phenomenon, Jorge, because we're all on camera, like staring ourselves, look at us, staring at ourselves the whole time.
We are. And you know what? It feels good to feel good. I mean, you don't have to put a filter on, you know? And I, I feel like no filter needed when you—
maybe keep your camera on because a lot of people are turning off they turn off their, their Zoom camera because they can't stand how they look. And we can help. We can help. We can help you feel confident in, you know, when you do your Zoom meetings, because we're really— it's a different time and I don't think we'll ever go back to where it was. So we have to feel confident looking at ourselves.
I feel you're absolutely right. Now there's a lot for people to get before we go. I want people to know where to find you on social, but let's start with the websites because I think your clinic, uh, tell them it's M Beauty, but give them the URL. And then you have a place where people can get the products that I've loved. And you are bringing back collagen soon because you were a sponsor of our show for a while. I'd have to be, you know, full disclosure, but it's a product I used every single day. These beautiful, elegant little tablets. I would take 2. And as much as I love to eat, you know, I have my— I usually have a carnivore type of diet or meat lover's diet, and I only eat 4 meals a days a week right now. I have 3 days where I do a 72-hour fast, and I think that has helped as well. But your collagen was critical, so I feel like that's important. So let me start with that website, the website that has supplements. You have a sleep product, tell them briefly about that. And you have one called Focus, right, which can help as an appetite suppressant of sorts and give you focus during the day. But all that is at what URL for any of your supplements?
Yeah, so that's, uh, shopdrtest and our clinic's website is mbeauty— mbeautyclinic.com. There, there's mbeautyclinic.com, and, um, there's so much information, um, on the website. There's a lot of videos. You know, our goal when we do these free virtual consultations— I really encourage all of you to, you know, take advantage of— is to educate you about about your specific options. Many of the things and treatments that we've discussed, me and Jorge Cruise, most places, most clinics do not have these types of technologies yet. I'm very honored to, you know, help educate my fellow doctors about these incredible regenerative therapies that really utilize stem cells and growth factors and combining them with our incredible technologies, uh, to help you be your most confident self and happiest self. And we need this. This is all self-care now.
It is. And I feel like you've been doing this for so many years. And, and it's funny, we've always talked— for anyone watching and listening, you probably— they probably remember us that we're both alumni of UCSD, and then you went to Stanford, which is so prestigious. And I feel like anyone with your level of qualifications, and you've worked with the most beautiful women in Hollywood, and you are a part of that as well, I feel feel like, you know, and I, and I always remember your show, which I loved, uh, Keeping Up with Your Family, right? It was kind of like the Kardashians but the Filipino edition, right? And I thought it was brilliant. Uh, you've worked with— well, I don't want to call her royalty, but Imelda Marcos as well. You interviewed her and you went to her home. And I feel like, wow, how many people get to meet people from history like that? And you are always given the A-list insight, you know, whether it's that— I know you go to the Golden Globes, you do all the top things. Hollywood Reporter is Jin Yu. For anyone out there that feels like they want to call, can you give them a number too? Is there a number they can call your office? Let's give them everything.
Our toll-free number is 1-833-462-3288. So 1-833-462-3288, M Beauty Clinic. Um, that is your last name?
The M is, is your last name? Yeah, Mauricio. Mauricio. Because we always say Dr. Tess, but that's just something that it's like Dr. Phil, everyone just calls you Dr. Tess, right?
Right. And Mauricio, because it's the Mauricio family. Yes. Um, the, the team, my, my, my brother and my sister are both RNs. Yes. And so if, if you get quoted an RN price, it's going to be either my brother or my sister. We also have an incredible RN in Beverly Hills. His name is Jerry. Um, and our sister Cheryl, um, is our CFO, and she runs Dr. Lawrence, the whole team. So we all, all the siblings work together. It is a family.
It is coming to your family. It really is.
It's beyond, you know, it's really family. It is personal to me and my siblings and our family. And it is always an honor. And I say, I'm very grateful that I do have this opportunity to impact men and women. Most of our patients are women still, although more men are coming in.
Hey, I'm coming in always. Yes, I'm always there. Not often, not often enough. I never have enough time for all the, the rock star. I have to do that. And I think we've got to document some stuff. I think this is the year to do that. And I feel like I want to make that commitment to you that we'll, we'll go behind the scenes, shall we say. And maybe the next interview we do is in, in, in your studio. And when I mean that, I mean in your clinic, you know. And I feel like we can really share with people that. And, you know, between you and me, we We can tease it a little bit, but we're working on a project that may be for television where we're going to help people transform. And I feel like, you know, I do so much with nutrition and the fasting and you get it, you understand that. And, uh, and, and you can also help them fine-tune people. And I feel like that's what we need. We need that edge. And I think you give people the edge quickly in a day and sometimes in 10 minutes. Right? Yeah.
You know it. No worries. So—— and we're a phone call away and we're an email away. We— you can email us as well at info@embeautyclinic.com, and we're more than happy, like I said, to answer your questions, create a customized plan for you. There is no obligation to ever buy anything from us, but I want you to be— to— I want you to be educated, and it would be an honor to take care of you.
Well, and I feel like, you know, we'll put all this in the show notes so people have it, all the websites, the phone number, the email, uh, social media. Tell people where you are on Instagram so they can follow you.
I'm @drtesmaricia, Dr. Tess Mauricio. Yes, yes. Okay, perfect.
