#121 - What is the New Science of High Blood Pressure?
24 Mar 2021 · 17 min
Jorge Cruise argues that sugar combined with salt, not salt alone, drives high blood pressure. High insulin from carbs amplifies salt's effect on blood pressure, linking to belly fat and aging. He recommends fasting windows, high-protein low-carb meals, and intentional sodium intake.

Have you ever been told by a medical professional that if you are concerned about blood pressure that you need to watch your sodium intake, that salt is a villain, that too much salt will kill you? Well, what if I told you that was wrong? What if I told you it wasn't salt but sugar that was the problem with high blood pressure? Yeah, you heard me. Not just belly fat, we all know that. I wrote a whole series of books 10 years ago called The Belly Fat Cure and the Science has shown that sugar causes belly fat, but the new science of blood pressure now shows that sugar also, when used with sodium, causes elevated blood pressure. And it's only when sugar's present with salt that this happens. So now imagine sugar's gone and now you have salt in your life, and I'm gonna recommend you consider this because now you have control over sugar. Carbs, you have control over hunger, and you can now drop weight quickly and effectively and feel phenomenal, all with great heart health. So let's get started. Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise, and I'm known as the number one weight loss strategist to the world's busiest celebrities. I'm also a multiple New York Times bestselling diet author with over 30 books and 12 million fans. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Kelly Clarkson, or even Dr. Oz. My career started in my early 20s because I was addicted to sugar, carbs, and salty snacks, and experts told me to simply count calories to get control. They were wrong. My passion to get radical control over hunger has led me to find science-proven ways to create zero hunger and help my clients drop 2 pounds each day. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Zero Hunger Revolution. Well, happy Tuesday. It is March 23rd. Uh, spring is here. I'm so happy. It feels like a new beginning. Hope you're ready for a new beginning here today. On today's show, we're gonna be talking about the new science of blood pressure and how what we've learned about blood pressure now has been shown through science to be absolutely wrong. And that what many doctors have told us for years is no longer valid because they were missing a piece of the puzzle. Doctors that have told us to watch our salt because of blood pressure forgot to mention that the only reason salt may do that is when you're pairing it with sugar, uh, carbohydrates, that if you can cut that down, the sugar and carbs, sodium actually is a hero. It's a superhero. So we're gonna talk about how you can use this superhero to not just have great health, great energy, but to also lose weight. Quickly. And, uh, we're gonna talk about why sugar's something we need to be cautious of still. I mean, I wrote books about this 10 years ago, so I'm super excited for the show. So with that said, guys, today we're going to be talking about the new science of blood pressure. This is some cutting edge information that I think is critical for anyone who wants good health. And if you've been told by your doctor to avoid salt, get ready to hear a new perspective, all on today's show. You're going to find out how sugar is the real villain. All right, guys, if this sounds good, I'm ready. Let's begin the show right now. All right, let's talk about it, guys. The new science of blood pressure. Basically, here's what it is. Uh, I've interviewed a few people, as you know, on this podcast, and probably the most intelligent man on planet Earth is Dr. James DiNicolai Antonio. He has done a few podcasts with me, and in those interviews, uh, we broke down his book The Salt Fix that has over 300 citations, took him 3 years to write. He's even written a new book on called The Mineral Fix that brings in all that and more. And if you haven't heard those shows, please do, guys. Very important ones. The most recent one was episode 118. The first one that really goes deep into his book, which I think is everything, is episode 109. So make sure to dig up episode 109, uh, episode— what's the other one? Uh, 118. And you will have a PhD in salt and blood pressure because guess what the The number one thing, we already said it, everyone is scared about salt is that blood pressure goes up. Well, so the new science basically says this, that that happens, but only and only, but see, here's the thing, in America, Western, the Western world where we follow the standard American diet, 90% of what we eat is sugar, it's carbs. We're all plant-based people that are eating plants, and plants are all carbohydrates. So whether they're processed sugars in soda, Coca-Colas, or if it's healthy, quote unquote, orange juice, it's still got 29 grams of sugar. All that is what causes, when paired with salt, blood pressure to go up. So imagine dropping the sugar. Now I'm gonna tell you why you should drop the sugar. It has nothing to do with high blood pressure right off the bat, but I can tell you I wrote a series of books for them, uh, 10 years ago with Hay House called The Belly Fat Cure. If you guys remember that, they were huge. Uh, you can Google search The Belly Fat Cure. You can go to Amazon and get those books still. And I can tell you the bottom line is that insulin causes your waist circumference to grow. Everyone from Dr. Oz to every doctor I've interviewed will tell you that a high waist circumference puts you at adverse, uh, health for heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, everything. So sugar causes weight gain, belly fat gain. It also, for those of us that are over 50 like myself here, we want to be cautious because it can cause us to age faster. It causes what's known as glycation, which breaks down skin. Tissues and really just ages our body, which none of us want. I don't think even a 30-year-old wants that. So you gotta avoid sugar. So what if I told you the motivation to avoid sugar is even higher? Because when you pair it with salt, you're gonna have high blood pressure. And you may be thinking, well, I'll just eat the sugar and not eat the salt. Well, if you eat the salt, here's what happens. You get radical control over sugar and carbs. They're kind of connected here, right? They, they, and they both look alike. They both like white crystals. It looks like drugs, right? Literally. And sugar has been classified in the sense of its effect on the brain as a narcotic. Uh, people don't accept that in traditional nutritional circles, but we know that the way the sugar impacts the brain function, it's the same kind of stimulation as cocaine or heroin, any kind of narcotic. So it's not your fault that you're addicted to sugar. And hopefully you listen to my episode 119 where we talked about sugar addiction and you heard last, uh, Sunday's, uh, interview with Sandy Rosser who dropped 100 pounds and gave up her sugar addiction as well and how young she feels. She's gonna be 59 this year and lost 100 pounds and has dropped probably 15 years off her aging where she looks great. And so if sugar makes us old and fat and salt can make us young and thin, well, what would you say to that? That's the new science, guys, because you know how much I love sodium. Half a teaspoon of sodium in water, and hopefully put some magnesium and potassium as well. Uh, the recipe, you can always get my Zero Hunger water recipe at zerohungerplan.com. We sponsor the show. We're launching April 11th where you can get coached by me on this lifestyle because this is a lifestyle. Now, the biggest question I get from people is, well, if I don't want to do it every day, what happens if I just do it during the week and have the weekends off? Well, you can do that. You kill it.
You could.
Uh, it's just like housekeeping because when you, uh, can incorporate a zero-hunger window into your life, you guys know what that does. It gives you autophagy, which causes housekeeping. And so when you don't do that and you eat sugar and carbs, say you have those breakfast pancakes on a Saturday and waffles or, you know, burritos and all sorts of tostadas and pizza, whatever you love, all the carbs and sugar, maybe some real ice cream and all that, your body basically loses its ability to do autophagy. And so you collect and you collect and you build belly fat. So it's just a matter of having a messy house, if you know what I mean. So I would suggest You don't do that, but you could, and then just get back to it on a Monday. Most of my most successful clients just don't dabble with sugar anymore, and they say no to it. Sandy, for example, Sandy Roster, who was on episode 120, has given it up. Now, does she never do it? No, she does it on occasion, but truly that's how she's kept the weight off. And so my suggestion to you is that if blood pressure is no longer an issue with salt, and remember, I'm going to resay it right now, salt only raises blood pressure when you pair it with sugar or carbohydrates. And that could be steel-cut oats, that could be orange juice, that could be something as healthy as, um, as a, like a low-keto type of bread made with, um, almond flour. Those carbohydrates, even the most healthiest of all carbohydrates, break down into sugar molecules, and that sugar molecule causes insulin to go up. And when you have a high insulin environment with salt, that's when you get high blood pressure. But by avoiding those things and keeping them for when you eat in your eating window— and that's when I would do all this for an hour, you know, 23 hours of non-zero, uh, 23 hours of a zero hunger window, non-eating window, and then you eat, you feast for that hour, you know, and eat the foods you like— I think is the key to it all. That way you can enjoy what you love. I would avoid, uh, the sugar and carbs, get the healthier stuff if you can. That's what I would do, a, you know, instead of a pasta, I would do zucchini pasta or something like that. Like zai spirals, they're called spiralizing noodles. Super delicious. Great biohack. Uh, all sorts of tricks. Now, do you eat carbs when you're doing this? I would suggest not to, but you can, you can. There's no biological need. I've done interviews with other folks like Robb Wolf in episode 107, where we talk about salt and also the primal diet of what our ancestors ate for millennia. And for millennia we ate meat. Meat, and then the meat had the salt in the animal's tissues and blood, which we ate too. So we were eating a high protein, high salty diet, high fat as well, because the animals had fat, and we almost never ate carbs. So carbohydrates, I'm afraid, are the villain. They're the bad guys, and we got to monitor them. We got to limit them. And my, my, my goal for you, my challenge to you right now is to try to cut the carbs down tremendously, up the protein when you eat, the healthy fats. If you want, have a ribeye. That's one of my favorite meals. And more importantly, incorporate sodium into your life and use the Zero Hunger Water Formula. Again, check it out at zerohungerplan.com. Get it for free there. You'll get the formula. You can make this at home for pennies. You can get it online too if you want. It's that simple, guys. Go out there, have a great day, and I'll be back on Thursday.
