#124 - Leslie Marcus: The OMAD Revolution
5 Apr 2021 · 24 min
In this episode of the Jorge Cruise Show, host Jorge Cruise promotes his Zero Hunger Plan and introduces the concept of OMAD (One Meal A Day) as a science‑backed strategy for weight loss, longevity, and cellular cleansing through autophagy. He announces an upcoming appearance on the CBS show The Doctors (airing April 7) where he and senior producer Leslie Marcus will debate OMAD alongside other experts. The conversation covers the psychological hurdle of hunger, personal experiences with intermittent fasting, and practical tips such as a 23:1 fasting ratio and a 19‑day challenge. Jorge also details a proprietary electrolyte drink—Zero Hunger Water—made from pink salt, potassium, magnesium, and monk fruit, claiming it suppresses carb cravings. Sponsor segments for Elemental Labs, Julian Bakery, and Primal Kitchen are interwoven throughout. Leslie shares her own intermittent‑fasting journey, her fashion‑focused segment on The Doctors, and promotes her social media channels. The episode ends with a call to subscribe, leave reviews, and join the Zero Hunger Revolution.

Over the last 10 or 20 years, you probably have tried so many diet plans out there, whether it's counting points with Weight Watchers or doing the South Beach Diet or even going back to the Zone Diet where you were balancing macronutrients. And unfortunately, all those diet plans didn't work for us for whatever reason, you know. And the science has evolved. And what if I could tell you that the science now shows that if we can mimic what our ancestors did, and we're talking Paleolithic ancestors, by eating just one meal a day. It's an acronym known as OMAD. You could transform your health and not only lose weight, but make this a lifestyle where you extend longevity. Well, this Wednesday on CBS, I'll be on The Doctors television show nationwide, and joining me on today's special Easter show is one of the senior producers on air as well. Her name is Leslie Marcus, and she's He's one of my dearest friends, and we're gonna sit down and talk about everything, including OMAD and why OMAD could be also the secret and the fountain of youth due to autophagy. All that on today's show. Let's get started. Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise, and I'm known as the number one weight loss strategist to the world's busiest celebrities. I'm also a multiple New York Times bestselling diet author with over 30 books and 12 million fans. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Kelly Clarkson, or even Dr. Oz.
My career started in my early 20s because I was addicted to sugar, carbs, and salty snacks, and experts told me to simply count calories to get control.
They were wrong. My passion to get radical control over hunger has led me to find science-proven ways to create zero hunger and help my clients drop 2 pounds each day. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Zero Hunger Revolution. Well, happy Sunday night, it's Jorge, and, uh, welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. This is the number one podcast to help you curb your, shall we say, desires, addictions, cravings to sugar and carbs. Um, and you guys know I also created the Zero Hunger Plan. It's now been featured, uh, in Woman's World magazine. And this Wednesday, we're going to be on the Doctor's television show, which is on CBS nationwide. So please jot that down onto your calendar, set your DVRs, or however you watch TV these days, Google TV, AT&T, there's so many ways, right? But it'll be on CBS, The Doctors, and we're gonna sit down and talk about OMAD, one meal a day, that's the acronym. But as you know, Zero Hunger Plan is really a plan designed to give you incredible, I would call them radical results. But really it's about controlling that hunger and that appetite. And that's what the show's gonna be about, how we do that through OMAD, you know? And that's where you get these incredible results where you could drop up to 2 pounds each day. So, and today's show's gonna be amazing, 'cause you're gonna meet my dearest friend in television. She's been my friend for over 10 years. We met in San Diego. Her name is Leslie Marcus. She's a senior producer for The Doctors at CBS. And up until COVID, they were filming this at Paramount Studios. So I would do segments with her throughout the years. Many seasons, and The Doctors is an incredible show. I love Dr. Oz as well, but The Doctors really covers different type of topics, and regardless, I believe anyone who's an educational teacher about health, fitness, medicine should be put on a pedestal. And whether it's Dr. Oz or The Doctors, I'm always honored to have these people cover my work, because I'm not a doctor. I'm a trainer and nutritionist, right? But that's what we're gonna be doing this Wednesday, so please mark your calendars. It's gonna be a great show. And before we start our interview with Leslie to talk about this, um, we're gonna have to give thanks to our sponsors. So big shout out to Elemental Labs. Uh, right now if you go to the following link I'm about to give you, you'll get a free box of electrolytes. This is a $45 value. You get 30 in a pack. Uh, I love chocolate. All right guys, with all that said, it is time for Sunday Show with Miss Leslie Marcus of The Doctors. Let's get started with the interview.
And one meal a day, and I was like, well, this is intermittent fasting to the next level.
So—
It is, it's an acronym. Tell them what it stands for, Leslie.
Yeah.
4 words, right? One—
One meal a day.
A day.
Oh yeah, and you're a huge fan of it, and so I wanted to explore it. We like to explore different topics on the show, so I made it a debate with you, um, Dr. Fung, Dr. Khan— he's not a fan of it— another nutritionist we brought in who's also not a fan of it. You know, it's very split on the research and the studies to back it up, and you know, the benefits, do they outweigh the potential risks? Of course, you know, some experts, diet experts, are gonna not enjoy what this whole diet is about. But at the end of the day, people are thriving on it. We had a girl that we did a backstory on who lost— how much weight did she lose? Half her body weight on OMAD. Oh yeah, it was like almost 400 pounds. She lost about 200 pounds.
Oh, it's incredible. And, and, you know, we'll, we'll surprise— well, we're not surprised everyone, but we'll reveal the air date because it's coming out this coming week. I know this is Sunday and it'll be airing, I think, this middle of the week, right, Les? Yes, April 7th. On Wednesday. So everyone has to tune in. We'll make sure it's in the show notes so you guys can tune in and watch the show on CBS, obviously. And I think you're— are you on the show? You weren't on my segment, right, Leslie?
No, I'm not on your segment, but I'm on another segment on that show doing fashion.
Yes. All right. All right. Well, let's do this. Let's set the stage and tell them right now because, you know, we can play this out a little bit. But for anyone who thinks one meal a day is crazy, I would say, The number one obstacle that most of my clients, celebrities or everyday people, whether they're on Instagram or Facebook, they are scared of being hungry, right, Lesley? I think that's the biggest issue with basically doing what I call a 23:1. And is that what you've discovered too, Lesley? For the most part, most people are hesitant because of the hunger issue, right?
Well, number one, obviously the hunger, but it's also, you know, it's a mind switch because it's like some people I mean, what's the point of life if you don't get to enjoy food, right? But I know you believe you can enjoy food for 1 hour a day, and I get it. And I did try it for a few weeks on and off while I was doing the story for the show, and I survived. It was fine, you know.
But I want you to enjoy it. And so that's why I'm sending you these.
Thank you.
The Zero Hunger Water, chocolate flavored and raspberry. You're going to love these because here's what it does.
Yeah.
And you know this, and I'll just sing my song for a minute here, but I really do feel, you know, now that I'm at an age of 50, I'm not doing this to lose weight. I'm at a good weight. I'm, you know, I've been healthy as you, and I think most people here watching, if they're fans of the show, they're at a good weight too. They're not like struggling. They want to just keep that edge there. And so for anyone who's in midlife or even like late 30s or early 40s, you know, I think autophagy is this phenomenon that I never knew 20 years ago. How long ago did you hear of this word, which basically means housekeeping? It's when you're— I always tell people it's like when you have room service in a fancy hotel. It's like they come in and they clean everything. It looks beautiful. If you don't have autophagy, things get a little messy. It doesn't mean it's horrible if you don't do it for a day or two, but if you wait a week or two and you just let things settle, I mean, you get a messy room and your body gets messy, you know? So autophagy, would you share with everyone from your perspective, because you've investigated this term, right, Les?
Yeah, and I really love your analogy about it's like, you know, having somebody clean your room. Well, it's, you know, it's cellular cleansing. And when I first heard about the term, it was during intermittent fasting. And so when I started intermittent fasting, which changed my life, by the way, I started that on that journey with— you started me on it, right?
Like— with Cruise Control, I think you started that. And I think it was a great plan.
You started me on it. Intermittent fasting. I'm pretty sure you did, and it was a few years ago. I remember specifically, I think we did a segment on it at Paramount, and no, no, we were in Malibu. We were in Malibu, and I was—
and I spent the night at your house, and I was like— so I'm the type of person that would wake up at like 5 AM. I'm hungry, give me food. Like, I cannot believe that used to be me. And I remember that we were at your house. I'm like, Jorge, I woke up, I'm like, I'm hungry, I need to eat. You're like, no, have some coffee with butter in it. We're gonna try coffee and butter, come on. And then we went out during the day, and you're like, Here's some coffee and butter. And then there was another time you were on—
whose show was it? You were on The Talk.
Yes.
Yeah. And you made me fast.
And they had all this food out there. And I was like, Jorge, I need to eat. I need to eat. I'm dying. I'm dying. You're like, you're getting skinnier by the minute. Look at how skinny you are. And I thought you were nuts. And I didn't know anything about intermittent fasting back then.
You did it.
You did it.
That's the crazy thing.
I did it. And I did it in Malibu. And then I was like, you know, it took a few days, maybe a few weeks, but I did it and then I'd never been skinnier. And I'll tell you that look, that, that skinny factor looks good when I'm on TV. It makes a big difference.
Like, well, you know, they always say the camera, even the Zoom camera, adds 10 pounds and we don't like that. No, we don't need extra 10 pounds. Yeah.
So when I learned about cellular cleansing, it was when I started intermittent fasting. So I always felt when I was doing it that I was doing something good for my body when I was not eating during the morning. And waited till 2 PM. And it was such a joy to eat a big salad at 2 PM. I loved every minute of it. It was like my favorite part of my day back at Paramount. We'd walk to the commissary and I'd make this huge salad with protein and I'd love it.
Yeah, I know. And it's easy. And I think, like with beauty, there's shame in doing a fast where you don't eat. And there's— I mean, I think on your show we had a couple of people talk about how this could be connected to the possibility of an eating disorder. And I don't want to ignore that because I don't want to be the guy that's causing eating disorders, but I'm also the guy who wants the best strategies. And with autophagy being for me, and I think a lot of my clients who are over a certain age of 50 who want to keep their weight down or lose weight and stay young, one meal a day works really well. Now, the trick and what I think you're going to discover when you try these little packets and I know in the show, I think we did a demo, but it may be more of a digital Right, Les? But we show people how to make it. And this is basically the secret sauce, guys. I know this looks kind of bizarre in a Ziploc bag, but basically it's a combination of just 3 minerals, Leslie, because in a nutshell, and this is what we talk about on the show, but you're going to see it with Dr. Fung, Dr. Khan, is that right? And that nutritionist. But it's pink salt, basically. Pink salt, half a teaspoon, right? Then we add this one, which is critical, potassium.
You're sending me all this, right?
Oh yeah, yeah. Well, basically this, this, the salt, and then the final piece is magnesium. When you combine these 3 minerals, and mainly it leans into the salt, what happens— and you put half a teaspoon of that into water, like 32 ounces, and whether— and I sometimes will add monk fruit. This is like monk fruit. It's like the healthy alternative to stevia and artificial sweeteners. Uh, what you create is this perfect electrolyte drink that really turns off your cravings for sugar and carbs. Because be honest with me, Leslie, most people when they're hungry, we're not starving for eggs, butter, coffee with butter in it, or steak. We want straight up carbs. Would you agree, Les? Right?
Yeah.
Well, I have to—
Give me a piece of bread.
I have to do an admission here. So I've been doing the keto, right? The keto fasting, 8-hour-a-day keto thing. The first thing I go to in the morning are these carb balance tortillas that have 5 carbs in them. Like, I can't even start my day without them. So you're right. I do want to go towards carbs, but they have, they have like 20 grams of fiber and so it balances it. It's only 5 net carbs. So I think I'm fine, right? To all the people out there, is that okay?
And you know what I'm going to propose? You just noodle this over in the next minute or two and then let us know at the end of the show. We're going to go like 10 more minutes. But I would like, once you get your chocolate and raspberry electrolytes, we call them, and it's fancier than this because this is, this is a bit of work. But you'll get these little packets, the Zero Hunger Water tools, and they're awesome. If you try this and we say we start on Monday or maybe the week after, after the holidays and all that. But I think what you're going to discover, and I know you don't need to lose weight, but I think you're going to discover a sense of the autophagy is what you call it. Cellular, how did you, what did you call it again, Leslie?
Housekeeping.
Yeah. Cellular housekeeping.
Cellular cleansing.
The cleansing is so powerful. For me, at 50, it is now a lifestyle because I know I can break down my body quickly because you can really do a number on your body if, you know, you let a couple of days go by. You can, you could eat something that really causes your insulin to spike. It causes your body to go into kind of like a coma, a sugar shock of sorts. It is like drugs, you know, even if a drug addict only does cocaine or heroin once a week or once a month, it's not good for you.
Hey, it's Jorge, and I just wanted to interrupt the show just for a moment to invite you to head on over and sign up for my Zero Hunger email that'll give you each day a simple what to eat to get radical control over your sugar, carb, and salty snack food cravings. And if this is something you want to conquer and make a lifestyle, the newsletter is important. It will really give you tools every day to keep building that momentum to create a lifestyle where you're in control of sugar and carbs. So if that sounds good, check it out. Simply go to zerohungerplan.com. I'll spell it for you, it's with a Z, Z-E-R-O, zerohungerplan.com, and it's all free. I'll see you there.
Let's get back to the show. And I'm not saying sugar can be done on occasion, you know, some, some people People say you get a metabolic edge after a while after you have those results. I can have cake on occasion, on a birthday.
Like, what are we talking? You are going to tell me I could have a sliver of cake every few days?
Well, you can have cake when you need it. So, here is my thing. I think the challenge is twofold. We got to think of food as a tool. We have got to live in a way that food is a tool for us. We don't want to live to eat. To eat, we want to eat to live. Does that make sense, Les?
Absolutely.
You know, and that's a mature outlook. I think young people in their 20s and 18s, they say, screw it, I'm just going to eat whatever I want. Twinkies, Domino's, and Slurpees. We can't do that.
Don't taco at 3 in the morning.
No, no, we can't do that. This is like, this is art.
Our body. Yeah, this is like.
An instrument. It's like a beautiful, beautiful piece of art. It's the most beautiful instrument we'll ever own, our body. And we can also screw it up, you know, but we can also undo the damage at any age. So I think, you know, so my challenge, let's think about this, is I want you to start this and we'll do like, we'll do literally like a 19-day challenge. I love to do 19 challenges. And you substitute out all those beverages from the coffee to the Monster with what I sent you, this chocolate or raspberry. What would you do in the morning? Chocolate or raspberry?
I'd mix them together.
Perfect.
All right.
Well, and I'll show you how to do that and I'll come up with a menu for you. So you have at least 5 or 6 different options when you do eat, because like most people, we like to enjoy a meal, hopefully with friends or family or partner or whoever. And so you can do that. So you can do that. When do you usually have your main meal if you're going to enjoy one? When you go out at night, maybe?
Or? No, I honestly, I've been doing, I've been eating from about I've honestly been eating breakfast. I'm not gonna lie. I've been eating from like 10 AM and then my last meal is like at 5. All right, so I only eat like twice a day. I'll eat something— I'll eat avocado, eggs, cheese, something in the morning with some meat, and then I might eat a little bit of meat before 5 PM.
One meal for you— and this is the same thing for everyone listening to the show— think about this, because if you were to pick your one meal a day— oh man, What one, and it's not based on hunger so much because I promised you the electrolyte drink, the Zero Hunger Water, is going to turn it off. But imagine this. What is the most meaningful emotional time of the day to eat? More in the morning or more at night when you're with friends?
Well, I don't really hang out anymore because everybody's so weird about COVID So I'd say morning.
So morning is more meaningful. All right.
It's always been.
If you could skip a meal, would you skip the evening meal? You would?
I would.
Can't thank you enough for taking The Doctors to the highest level with your work. No, you are. You produce the best segments and these segments really change people's lives. I remember the one for me that during COVID was such a heart-wrenching one was the whole thing on masks. Do you remember the one you did about which masks work and which ones are bogus? I mean, these were really useful segments and you know, I feel like I'm excited for Wednesday. So tell everyone we should tune in on Wednesday, CBS, it's nationwide, right?
Yes, so you just need to go to thedoctorstv.com and look up, and I think there's a tab that says find out where it's airing in your city and type in your zip code and it will show you what affiliate the show's airing on.
All right, and then that'll be—
Jorge Cruise in segment 1. So we're leading the whole show with the diet debate, the OMAD debate.
I love it, I love it. And is there a possibility we'll show them the recipe, the full recipe digitally maybe?
I did email the team, so I'll follow up.
And if people want to follow you on social and you have a website, would you share that with everyone?
Leslie, on Instagram, follow me. I do a lot of my fashion and my beauty tips and stuff on there. And I've been sharing all my vintage handbag finds because I'm obsessed. Because you guys, '90s and Y2K is so in fashion right now. So everybody watching that has all these old clothes from the '90s and Y2K, they're totally in style again. So rock it. Um, my Instagram is L Marcus L, M-A-R-C-U-S. And I have a website, lesliemarcusmedia.com. And then I have a YouTube channel as well.
I love it.
What's your YouTube channel?
That's L Marcus 23. I need to upload more videos on there.
All right, let's do it. All right, everyone, please follow Leslie. She's amazing. We're gonna see you on this show this Wednesday, but you're on the show almost— well, you are on the show every week, right, Les?
Yeah, I do.
Well, I do an investigation in one of my shows pretty much every week. It's just where they get put on the air calendar. I have, I have some that are being saved for May for sweeps.
So yeah, all right, well, we're excited. I love The Doctors. It's one of the best shows out there. Love you, CBS guys. CBS. Leslie, thank you so much. I love you so much.
All right, love you, babe. All right, stay healthy and beautiful for having me.
