#141 - Zero Hunger story: Barb's transformation
6 Oct 2021 · 16 min
In this episode of the Zero Hunger podcast, host Jorge Cruise introduces himself as a celebrity fitness trainer and the creator of the Zero Hunger program. He interviews Barb, a 73‑year‑old client who has lost 65 pounds and dropped from a size 24 to a size 16 using the Zero Hunger system. Barb describes how she was introduced to Zero Hunger Water, drinks three 32‑ounce bottles daily (often purchased from Costco) and adds LMNT electrolyte mix. She adopted a One‑Meal‑A‑Day (OMAD) eating pattern focused on animal protein, and uses the mental cue “The kitchen is closed” to curb emotional hunger. Barb emphasizes the importance of the mantra “Just don’t quit,” taught by her coach Sandy, and shares how she tracks steps by walking quickly through grocery stores and parking farther away. She also discusses her spiritual routine: a simple morning prayer to a higher power, daily gratitude lists shared with friends, and how these practices keep her centered. Throughout the conversation, Barb encourages listeners, especially older women, to commit to the program for at least 90 days and not give up. The episode ends with Jorge’s call to action, urging listeners to subscribe, leave a 5‑star review, and join the Zero Hunger Revolution.

Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise, but I'm also known as the Zero Hunger Guy. I'm a celebrity fitness trainer and a multiple New York Times bestselling diet author with 12 million fans. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Kelly Clarkson, or even Steve Harvey. My career started because I was addicted to sugar, carbs, salty snacks, and stress, and experts told me to simply count calories to get control. They were wrong. My passion to get radical control of both physical and emotional health has led me to find science-proven shortcuts that help my clients drop 25 belly inches or even more fast and permanently. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Zero Hunger Revolution.
Today we have an incredible interview with a client of mine. Her name is Barb. Barb, are you there?
I'm here.
Welcome to the show. I'm so excited to have you on today. Would you share with everyone first how young you are? Because you look gorgeous, Barb, please.
I am 73 years young and I have been on the diet roller coaster my whole life. And to think that I'm finally doing it.
Let's start with the big number. How many pounds lost total so far, Barb?
65 pounds lost.
Incredible. Oh my gosh. Round of applause, everyone listening.
Thank you.
Tell them your story briefly, Barb, where you're at. How did this water work for you?
Sure. I have been most of my life overweight. I just kept trying to find the magic pill, and I don't want to call this a magic pill, but I do know that this works. When I would go into the grocery store, every new diet that was on a magazine, I would pick up and look at and see, is this the right one for me? And fortunately for me, last year I was introduced to the Zero Hunger Water, and I went from a size 24 to now I'm a size 16, and I wear my jeans now, and I'm like so excited. I feel like I look good for the first time in a very long time. I think one of the best things that I heard was when we had our meeting last year, and the first thing I, I was trying to think, is this just going to be another thing that I'm going to try and fail at? And I tried to not have those negative thoughts, but when I heard Sandy, who is a wonderful woman that you've worked very closely with, I said, how do we do this? What should I do? And she said, you have to always remind yourself, just 'Just don't quit.' And for me, that just totally rang the bell in my head. That was what I had done time after time. I kept quitting and having to restart and quitting and trying something else. And I know that is the solution. Just don't quit. And keep my eye focused on what I need to do, the positive things. We went over OMAD, it's called one meal a day. And I had never, ever in my life done that. Now, I was more of a 2-meal-a-day plus a million snacks in between and after.
Yeah.
So I had to have a whole new mindset of 1 meal a day. And I prefer eating animal protein for that 1 meal a day. And so I have beef, I have fish, I have chicken, and It just works for me. I usually eat about 4 o'clock, 5 o'clock at the latest, unless I'm meeting family or friends and I adjust myself so I can be a part of my family. And I just adjust myself and say, "Okay, today I'm eating at 1 o'clock because we're going to have a family meal and that's going to be just fine." And then I just drink my Zero Hunger water. When I think I— sometimes I think I have emotional hunger where I smell something and I think, "Oh, I'm hungry," but I'm really not hungry. I'm totally satisfied. I just had to mentally tell myself, "The kitchen is closed." I love that. "The kitchen is closed." That's great.
That's great.
Just, that was one of the little things I would tell myself is, "Just don't quit. The kitchen is closed." And it wasn't that I was ever hungry because I ate plenty during that one sit-down during my one meal. And I really and truly was not hungry. The Zero Hunger Water, I just drink that. If I think I need something at night, I just have some more Zero Hunger Water because that does satisfy me and it satiates that extra hunger. And I'm grateful it does because— It works.
Well, so, so do this. So Sandy was a motivator for you, our client. She was on the COVID of Woman's World magazine. And I know that was, we got a lot of people over the country reading that. And then it was in First for Women magazine. And then the show, The Doctors. You probably saw the clip of me making the water on the show. And I'll tell you, a lot of people don't know that you can make this at home. If you go to zerohungerwater.com, we give you the recipe for free. We have pre-made, Tell everyone what you use, if it's pre-made or you make it from scratch, and then take us through your morning and your day of how you use that water.
I don't know if this is the lazy way, but this is the way that works for me. I choose to go to Costco and I buy water.
Oh yeah.
And it's 32 ounces, so I already have my water measured.
Love that.
I keep them in the refrigerator so they're cold. I also buy from you the LMNT, um, electrolyte mix. It's already pre-made, so I take my scissors, snip off the top, pour that in, and then shake it. I drink the 32 ounces, and the 32 ounces is good for me. It fills me up right away and it just starts my day out right. So I drink the 32 ounces, and then I usually treat myself to some coffee with some cream and stevia.
Love that.
And I enjoy that. And then I have chores that I do around the house, and I like to do a little bit of exercising. So I'm not a huge exercise person, but now that it's finally cooling off— and you guys have to realize it's 110, 115, it's very hot where I live. I'm in Arizona. I'm outside of Scottsdale, Arizona, in Fountain Hills.
Nice.
And I will tell you that whenever I go into any store during the week at all, whether it's Target or Fry's or Safeway, I get my cart and I walk as fast as I can through that store and I do a few rounds in that store. That's one of the way that I get in as many steps as I can get in.
Oh, I love that.
That's, you know, at 73. And I also park my car not real close. I try to get the steps in there too.
So when you're exercising, just confirm for everyone watching or listening, You are not eating. You know what most people think they have to eat before they work out, but you're not eating at all?
No, nothing. I don't need anything. I don't feel hungry. I really don't feel hungry until maybe 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon. And I also am trying to tune into my body. What is that? Is my body really hungry or is this like some kind of emotional hunger that's coming up? Or is this just, you know, something that's in my head? Because I am not hungry.
How much water do you drink? How do you do it?
These 3 of these, and each one is 32 ounces, so that's 90, 96 ounces of— and I know that maybe the ideal might be one more, but that's what I'm doing is the 96, and it works for me. And I'm doing more and more listening to my body. When I go into a grocery store If I'm— if my head is turned towards something that probably would not be the best choice for me, I just remind me of what Sandy said, "Just don't quit," because if I reach and eat that, it's going to be quitting for that moment. And I also, if I do make a mistake, because I'm not perfect, if I do make a mistake, I get right back on. I don't say, "I'm going to wait till tomorrow. I'm going to wait till Monday." I used to do that for years. And Monday never came.
Yeah.
So I really do my best to stick to our food plan, stick to our water plan.
I think what you just said, that attitude you have, is so powerful. I know for a lot of our clients, including, I believe, you, because it has for me, having a God consciousness, this faith in a higher power. For me, I love what you said. Maybe you could talk about what you say in the morning, because I feel like for me, whether you call it a meditation or prayer, Whether you're Christian or Jewish or Buddhist doesn't matter in my opinion. I think it's just knowing that there is a higher power that at times, and we talk about this during some of our meetings, don't we, Barb? We can utilize that for strength. How has that given you an advantage?
I do believe in a higher power. They used to say it at the church that I went to, and it's not you.
Yes.
I believe in a higher power. It's not me. And so in the morning, it's a very simple prayer. When I open my eyes, I usually fortunately think of God first. So I just ask God to help me. Please help me, God, to stay focused on what would be the best choices. What do you want me to do today?
Beautiful.
And that, that really helps when I, you know, go before me, God, you go in front of me, tell me what I need to do. And I know that when my mindset is thinking that way, that my day is going to go great. When I wake up and I start worrying about what I should be doing or getting frustrated over anything, yeah, that it throws my whole day off. But if I become centered— and I have different spiritual books that little day at a time type books that just when I have time, I make the time in the morning and, and sit down. Oh, and the other thing that I do in the morning, which is really good for me, is I write a gratitude list. I write down 5 things that I, that happened the day before that I'm grateful for, and I send it to 2 other women that I know, and they send theirs to me. And I think that helps me to stay centered.
I think it's really just understanding that there is this higher power. And I do the same thing you mentioned. You know, I make gratitude list each day. Gratitude list. And I have certain prayers. And I know in our meetings, and not to share too much, but I know you attend our meetings, and we have this incredible group of people that are at the same kind of thinking, in the same wavelengths as us. And I feel like through the Zero Hunger Water, through the accountability of the meal planning that we talk about, and through some simple prayers— and for some people, maybe that word doesn't feel right, but meditations, it's affirmations, it's just saying the things we want. Do you have one prayer that you could share, Barb, that has given you strength and hope for anyone out there that may think they're too old, they're too young, they're too this, they're too that? Something that you can share that just comes from your heart, maybe?
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And that means for me that if I'm trusting and acknowledging, that then God will put in front of me the right things.
I think that is such a great thing for me. What that says is that we surrender our will, right, to God's will. And I know they, they say that funny acronym, the EGO is not our amigo. You've heard what the acronym stands for?
Edging God Out.
And I think we forget that. Maybe we can end on this God consciousness, because when we have that connection to that higher power, I, I feel like I, I have this resolve, this incredible strength. Give people like an indication, as best you can, of how your life maybe has become less difficult, almost joyous and free, you know, from this.
Well, That's what I strive for, because I've always felt that worry is wasted energy. Being hard on myself doesn't accomplish anything. I think that it's so important for me to put my mind where God wants me to have my mind, and that is usually making the right choices And so sometimes I just have to check in and go quiet within myself and say, what is the next indicated right thing for me to do today? What is it? And if I slow down, God will— I'll intuitively know what I should be doing.
Oh, I love that. I think that's so powerful.
Give this your absolute best and just don't quit. If you start it, say, "I'm going to commit for the next 90 days and this is what I'm going to do. I can get through the holidays, I can get through everything. I just am not going to quit." I love that. There's a million diets out there and you've probably done like the first 100 or more. Why not give this one, have it be number 101, but don't quit and move on. Let this, give this a chance. It will work. I'm 73 years old and most women don't, they give up by this age.
Oh yeah.
There's no reason to give up. I know that I feel so much better just walking up the curb. I can feel the difference in my body. It is just, it is, I feel like it is a, I don't want to say a miracle, but like a little miracle.
I love that. Barb, you are my inspiration and I am just so grateful that you spent this time with us and thank you so much for sharing this story from Arizona.
