#144 - Get emotional control of SUGAR!
14 Oct 2021 · 13 min
In this episode of the Zero Hunger Guy podcast, host Jorge Cruise explains how emotional hunger—eating to soothe feelings such as stress, loneliness, or sadness—drives sugar and carb cravings and how it differs from physical hunger. He introduces a concrete guideline of no more than 100 sugar calories (≈24‑25 g of total carbs) per day as a quick self‑test for sugar addiction, and he walks listeners through how to calculate it using nutrition labels. Cruise shares his own story of addiction to sugar, carbs, alcohol, and even drugs, emphasizing that many people use food as a drug to elevate serotonin and numb pain. To counter emotional eating, he leads a short affirmation exercise (“I am capable”) and explains its psychological and spiritual framing. The episode also includes sponsor plugs for Elemental Labs’ Zero Hunger Water and Primal Kitchen’s avocado‑oil products, a reminder to check show notes for links, and a call for listener engagement (comments, emails, reviews). Finally, Cruise teases the next guest, Dr. Paul Saladino, and reiterates his goal to transform a million lives.

I'm Jorge Cruise and welcome to the Zero Hunger Guy podcast. This is the show to help you get radical control over your appetite, to really get control over sugar, carbs, salty snack foods. This has been my passion for over 20 years. And if you guys know me, you've probably seen my work with Oprah, Khloé Kardashian, Steve Harvey. I've been doing this for 20 years. And on today's show, what we're going to talk about is not just physical hunger, but as we've talked about that a lot this week on the show about Zero Hunger Water. Zero hunger meals, how to turn off hunger so you can do a 23-hour fast, uh, without ever feeling hungry. Today we're going to talk about the other side of the coin, which I think is part 2 to maximizing, uh, your health and whether you want to drop belly inches or whether you want a longevity improvement or you just want to feel better. Uh, the thing that can sabotage us almost every single time is not turning off physical hunger, but it's turning off what I call emotional hunger. And you guys know what I mean? Like Thanksgiving, right? And you're stuffed and yet you say, yes, I'll have pumpkin pie, like that kind of stuff. And so on today's show, we're going to really talk about how we can get maximum control over that and do it in a way that is simple, that you can do through a simple affirmation, through a simple meditation. You can call it a prayer even, but it'll give you internal strength so that way you can have control. And whether you, you're using sugar and carbs to numb something, maybe you're having a stress in your life, maybe you're overwhelmed, maybe you're lonely, maybe you're depressed. I want you to know you're not alone. A lot of us, and I'm one of these people, have used sugar, carbs, salty snack foods as a drug of sorts to cope. And it's a coping mechanism because biologically, in a biochemistry type of view, Sugars elevate this thing called serotonin. And when serotonin goes up, guys, you feel good. It's a sugar high. You know what I mean? It's, it's almost like, like when you drink alcohol or if you were to use drugs, you get this high and it numbs pain. And so if that is you and you can relate to a numbing of your, of your heart, we'll say, or filling a void in you with sugar and carbs so you feel less pain. That's what we're talking about on today's show, guys. So if that sounds good, let's get started right now.
Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise, but I'm also known as the Zero Hunger Guy. I'm a celebrity fitness trainer and a multiple New York Times bestselling diet author with 12 million fans. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Kelly Clarkson, or even Steve Harvey. My career started because I was addicted to sugar, carbs, salty snacks, and stress, and experts told me to simply count calories to get control.
They were wrong.
My passion to get radical control over both physical and emotional health has led me to find science-proven shortcuts that help my clients drop 25 belly inches or even more fast and permanently. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Zero Hunger Revolution.
All right, happy Thursday, guys. This is Senna's up to You see it? Where is it? Oh, there it is. There's the sunrise. If you are on YouTube, uh, check it out. It's really pretty. I love the sun of the day. Um, and I will tell you on today's show, we're gonna talk about emotional eating. We're gonna talk about why so many of us at times will use sugar, carbs, salty snack foods to cope with life. And I want you to know you're not alone. That's why most of us eat carbs, uh, or sugar. And I'm gonna give you a way to, on today's episode, to gauge how much sugar and carbs you should have. And if you exceed that number, you may think, you may want to think of really addressing issues in your life, emotional issues, because if you exceed what I call 100 sugar calories, odds are you're a sugar addict. Uh, if you can keep your sugar intake to 100 sugar calories, which is simply 24 grams a day, you have control and probably, you know, not overweight. But if you exceed 100 sugar calories in a day, you're probably overweight. 30 pounds, probably. And it's not your fault, it really isn't. It's just a way to deal with life sometimes. And, uh, you know, we, we talked about how to turn off that physical hunger, but today we're, we're going to talk about the emotional side of hunger. So before we do that, guys, let me give thanks to our sponsors. We're brought to you by, uh, two people that I absolutely adore. Um, the first one is Elemental Labs. Elemental Labs makes the Zero Hunger Water on-the-go product that I add to 32 ounces of water. I'm about to head to the gym right now, and if I go to the gym, I make this on the go with their product. Basically, you take a little sachet, a little packet, they have tear it and put it into 32 ounces of water. Basically turns off your hunger, gives you incredible calm energy. It's not crazy energy. There's no caffeine in it. There's no sugar in it. And it's sweetened with stevia, which is a natural plant-based sweetener. And basically it has the optimal amount of sodium. That you need to turn off hunger. And we talked about this 2 days ago on the show. If you haven't heard that show, please listen to it. I think it'll give you a great insight to how to turn off physical hunger. And they're giving us— Elemental Labs is giving us a free $45 value, a box of their delicious electrolytes, which lasts you quite a bit. There's 30 in a box for free. It's a $45 value. If you order a value bundle, simply go to zerohungerwater.com. Click on shop and you'll see a link to Amazon. But if you want the promo right below it, there's a link to, uh, a link to the promo code where you can put it all in and you get the free box of Elemental Labs. And I suggest, I don't know, for fall, I don't know why I'm loving watermelon right now, but watermelon is great, but so is chocolate. That's my favorite. So check them out and thank you to Rob Wolf for that. And then we're also brought to you by the folks over at Primal Kitchen. Mark Sisson is the creator of that. He's a dear friend of mine for many, many years, uh, almost 17 years. He's 67 years young. And for him, one of his keys to turning off hunger, physical hunger has been healthy fats. And that is why he created this Primal Kitchen, which is basically an avocado oil company. He's made salad dressings. He's the healthiest, sexiest man on earth. Literally, talk about being Paul Newman, but putting it on a higher level. Most salad dressings are made with canola oil, which is inflammatory. Most mayonnaise is made with canola oil. -inflammatory as well. And so what he has done is replaced all that with avocado oil, which is anti-inflammatory. So it makes your joints and your fingers and your body, your skin better, healthier, and it turns off hunger. He's giving all of us a bottle of his extraordinary delicious lemon chipotle mayonnaise. You gotta check it out. It's delicious. I put a dollop of it on my steak almost every day, or fish if I'm having fish or chicken. And it's the healthiest fat out there. And unlike real avocados that may rot in your refrigerator if you don't use them, this comes in a jar and you just use what you need and it's delicious and it's free. So check it out. Go to primalkitchen.com/jorgecruise. All right guys, show notes if you need the links at zerohungerguide.com. All right. With that, let's get started. Let's talk about emotional hunger. I want to give you guys two things right now in this episode. I want to give you away a tool to range this, to gauge if you're an emotional eater. And then I want to give you a solution, a simple affirmation that I think will give you calm mindset. It'll calm down that hungry heart because a lot of times the reason we have that is because we're sad inside, whether we're feeling lonely, stressed, overwhelmed, and believe me, you're not alone. I know I live for the most part on my own. I used to be married. I've been married twice. And you know, for me, 3 years ago, I went through the second breakup, a divorce, if you will. And it really shook me to my core where I lost my sense of purpose and meaning. And I started to overuse not sugar and carbs, but more alcohol because that's the next level after carbs, right guys? I mean, if sugar and carbs don't numb you, then alcohol really does it. And then even drugs, you know, so you could get to that place where you're using things that are causing you to just escape. And so rather than escape, I want you to use what I'm going to share with you at the end of the show here, this affirmation, but here's the gauge for sugar. And carboholics. So at least if you're questioning that's you and tell me if this is, you can email me, you can comment on the video below. Uh, if it's on YouTube, uh, on there or on Apple Podcasts, please, uh, put a, put a comment. I read these comments. If it's Spotify, wherever you're listening to this show at, but here's the gauge. Do not exceed today 100 sugar calories. You'd think, and what is that? 100 sugar calories. So I look at the label and It says sugar, don't exceed 100 of these things. No, those are sugar grams. You don't want to exceed 100 sugar calories. Now here's how it works. 4 calories in a gram of carbohydrate. Remember, sugar comes from carbs. So I want you to look at total carbs. Do not think of net carbs. Look at whatever you're eating. Look at carbs. You can Google search anything now and get that, the value of how many carbs in X or Y. Find out what you're eating. And what it has and don't exceed basically 25. I say 24 just to be under 100, but say 25 grams. 'Cause if you multiply it by 4, you're gonna be at about 100, right? And it's 100 calories per gram of carbohydrate. So don't exceed 25 at your max. Does that make sense, guys? 25 grams a day, which is about a half a cup of brown rice. And you're not gonna get the biggest banana on earth on that. It's gonna be small. I'd rather you eat squash or avocados. Avocados are great. They're high in fat, low in carbs. Carbs, but you can Google search all that. Just find a carb you like, find out how many total carbs, multiply it by 4. Don't exceed 100 in a day. If you do, odds are you're a sugarholic. And if you are, odds are there's something inside of you that needs to be addressed. That's not appetite in the sense of physical. It's more a hunger in your heart. And so for that, what we'll start every week talking about this, I like dedicating Thursdays to what I call emotional eating, right? I think today what I would ask you to do is use this affirmation. I'm gonna say it once and let's do it 3 times together. It's something that I use with a lot of my clients. I've done this with Brooke Burke in Malibu tremendously. She's such an empowering woman. You guys know Brooke Burke, and I would simply offer you this phrase. Hear it with me.
I am capable.
All right, let's say it 3 times and I'll tell you why it's so powerful.
I am capable. I am capable. Again, I am capable.
Now what that does is it causes our inner voice to be given power, you know, and you have to remember there is energy in us from whether you want to call it God, the universe, the sun. This higher power that created all of this, you know, the science behind God is pretty, uh, strong these days in 2021. There's enough science where physicists, quantum physics, all that really relies on this idea that there is a higher power, whatever you wanna call it. This is not about, um, an institution, but by saying that you activate that part of you that is in, in, in incredible, that part of you that is unstoppable, that comes from a higher place. By saying, I am capable, you give yourself permission to be the best you that you are. And you say, you know, I would offer you to say it 3 times and pause, literally stop, slow down your thinking, slow down your movement. When you feel this emotional hunger, this stress, this loneliness, this could be tonight, it could be in the morning, it could be any time in the day. Slow down that crazy voice in your head and just say, I I am capable. It'll give you a great calm energy and then drink some Zero Hunger Water. This is what I would do. Check out our show from 2 days ago, but that'll turn off physical hunger in case you truly are hungry. But most likely if it's emotional, it's Zero Hunger Water won't necessarily turn that off. It's more internal. We got to do that internally in here and in our heart. So I hope this helps guys. If you have any questions, please email me at jorge@zerohungerguy.com. I will see you tomorrow. Tomorrow we have Paul Saladino on the show. Peace and purpose. Have a great Thursday. Bye, everyone.
