#15 - Happy New Years, Get Ready to Reduce Your Back Pain
12 Jan 2020 · 22 min
In this January 2020 episode of the Jorge Cruise Podcast, host Jorge Cruise welcomes guest Shayna Taylor and opens with New Year greetings and personal reflections on his recent divorce and new relationship. The conversation quickly shifts to health topics: they discuss intermittent fasting, promoting a 19‑day weight‑loss challenge hosted by Prevention Magazine, and share personal experiences with fasting schedules and energy benefits. The core of the episode centers on back pain – Shayna reveals her scoliosis and rotated hips, and both hosts introduce the Egoscue method as a posture‑correction system. They walk listeners through proper standing mechanics, emphasizing a slight knee bend, balanced weight distribution, and a “foot tripod” with three points of contact (heel, ball of the foot, side ridge). Yoga principles are woven in, describing toe spreading and foot positioning for stability. The hosts also address the dangers of prolonged sitting, especially on long flights, recommending compression socks, standing desks, and regular movement breaks. Throughout, they intersperse promotional plugs for the Jorge Cruise Report newsletter, social media handles, and the upcoming 19‑day challenge, urging listeners to subscribe, share the podcast, and leave reviews. The episode blends personal anecdotes, actionable health advice, and marketing calls, aiming to empower listeners to reduce back pain and adopt healthier habits in the new year.

I can't believe it, but, uh, it is the first Monday of the new year. It's January the 6th. I'm Jorge Cruise. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. Joining me this whole month, I'm so excited, is one of my dearest friends and really, I think, one of the innovators in health for women, especially through nutrition and organic food and, and really elevating your thinking. And, and also, you know, we're talking today about back pain and, and how so many of us really don't even know how to stand properly and how that, that one distinction on how to stand can make your back pain go away. And, and Shayna Taylor's here. Please say hi to everyone, Shayna.
Hi everyone, how are you? Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! How was your, uh, oh, and then we have Cherie here. We're back in New York. Cherie is, uh, my boyfriend's, uh, dog. She's beautiful and gorgeous girl, and we're in New York City and What a beautiful time to be in New York. I mean, I want to ask you, how was your New Year's Eve with Mr. Ryan Seacrest? Did you freeze your, your butt off, or was it warm, or what would you say? It was, uh, you did yoga.
I remember New York is always freezing. Yeah, I feel like no matter what you do, you're just in the cold. Totally. But especially come to January. Yeah, um, it's the coldest month in New York City. But, uh, New York was amazing. Our New Year's, New Year's in New York was amazing. I had my mom here and my stepdad here, so we, uh, partied it up all night. We did yoga in the morning. I stuck to what I said.
Yes, I dragged everyone out in the cold.
Yes. Yes, but yeah, we had a— we had an amazing time.
Wow. Well, uh, you know, for me, I've been in California and I'm back and I'm so happy to be here because, you know, California, I've been there my whole life, and not that I hate California, but we don't have a lot of seasons. You know, Cali, I mean, you're there too, as much as— more than me, probably, back and forth.
It's been raining a lot this year though.
It has. And you know, and then we have fires of Malibu, and it's just— I mean, the world just kind of like needs some proper weather, but it's kind of not going to be that way.
Fires in Australia, then there was a huge volcano eruption a month ago. Yeah, New Zealand.
Oh my god, like the world is like, you know, we got to stay healthy, we got to pray for the world. And today we're praying for our back pain to go away. And you know, it's the first Monday of the new year, which I'm super excited. You know, I'm gonna be talking about briefly about Prevention magazine because today we start my challenge. I'm going live and taking over Prevention magazine. They have 7 million readers across the country. It's a 19-day weight loss plan to do intermittent fasting and my girl here, Shayna, we met because of, well, partly because of intermittent fasting and she and Ryan, does he still do intermittent fasting?
Yeah, he does, yeah.
So tell them your two cents on intermittent fasting and why everyone should try it for hopefully 19 days.
So I love intermittent fasting. I've known about it forever. I used to do it a long time ago and then I kind of forgot about it and then about 3 years ago I started doing it again pretty consistently. So I do intermittent fasting pretty much Monday through Friday or Saturday and I normally take a day off.
Yeah.
I mean, I have so much more energy. I have so much more management on my body and how I like it to work. I have, I mean, it's limitless, the feelings and the benefits from it. But I like to do, I started off with 16 a while ago and then now I'm about 18 to 20 hours a day depending on.
Amazing, that's what I'm doing, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, and I still get 2 meals in. I eat early, I'm an early bird, I'm a grandma.
Yes, Jorge Cruise. So I like to eat at like 5:30, 6 o'clock.
How many people can relate to that?
ARPA readers and prevention readers. I mean, early bird gets the worm and it's good for your digestion.
It is because then you at least digest 3-4 hours before you sleep, which I think is really good depending on when you sleep. I go to bed at 9:30.
9:30? Mm-hmm. Resolution here, motivation for me. What's your best tip on that? I'm going to steal it right now.
My best tip on that is routine. It's just routine. Routine? Your body loves a routine and that's another thing with intermittent fasting. People think it's really hard in the beginning, but that's because your body, your stomach is so used to having that food. And you have to just remember that you don't need food. Your body is just so used to it.
People are thinking we're a little weird right now.
Right, but it's true.
Autophagy comes from not eating, which is a healing, and our body needs to heal.
It does.
And you don't need— you need food, but not every hour of the day. And having a window of 8 hours is what I would say is the max of eating. I try to do less. I have Sonya Morgan that this year, 2020, guys, I'm on season 12 with her.
I can't believe it's 2020.
I'm in like, whoa. How many of us are like, whoa, it's 2020. Where's our spaceships? Where's the flying cars? Yes, and it's crazy. The world is sick, so we got to get well, and we're gonna talk about back pain. So let's get to that because we could talk about whatever.
Yeah, forever.
We like talking.
We want to keep your time, like last week going 50 minutes, which was crazy. I don't think we've ever done that.
No, no, we went long, but we had to. And if you guys didn't hear our podcast last week, we talked about—
listen to the whole thing. It was when we talked, especially today, because maybe some people are finally realizing, oh shit, it's January.
And what— when we give them a little plug for last week, we talked about our best 3 tips.
New Year's resolution solutions and what we, what we talked about, ours. And I think, I think ours would apply to a lot of people and what they're kind of interested for the new year. Sorry, my ring just hit the table. But yeah, we talked about yoga, we talked about self-care and what that means and define what self-care is. And yeah, we talked, I mean, we talked about a lot of things, but we did.
Yep. And I think it's a, it's not quite an hour, but we'll call it an hour of power last week. Listen to it, guys, because like she said, it really We went a little longer, but we were just so into it. And you know, the end of the year, and it was the eve of the eve, and you have your thing you're doing, and I'm with my kids and family, and I feel like it's significant, it's major to start a new year with the right tempo, the right direction. And so if you are wanting that right now, guys, we encourage you, definitely listen to last week's podcast. Because this week, as much as it's the first Monday of the new year, we're talking about how to reduce back pain. And for me, I'm 48, I'm gonna be 49, 49, March 6th. You're gonna hook me up with an astrologist. I need to know how to have my best year ever. You know, I'm really lucky. I've kind of fallen in a really crazy way into love with a new guy that I met a few— I've really not talked about it, but it's the new year, so I'm gonna talk about it briefly without mentioning names. But I'm in a good place, you know, and I've had a really— it was a dark year last year because I went through divorce, and I'm still kind of going through it. But you know what? Love is love, and I will always love, and I think. It's important to realize that, you know, people come into our lives for a reason. Yes. And as Oprah's taught me, yeah, they're, they're teachers. Everyone's a teacher.
Do you believe me? 100%.
I believe you. So thank you for all my past teachers out there. You guys know who you are, my past spouses, you know. And I wish you all a Happy New Year because super close to my ex-wife, she's the mother of my kids. I love her to death. I haven't spoken to my ex-spouse Sam in forever. It's been a while, you know, and I wish we could talk more. And it's so sad, but you know, I sent out my New Year's cards to all my family and friends, and that was the saddest part of my year last year, was ending my marriage, you know, and a divorce, second one. I'm not proud of, I'm not happy, but it happens for a reason. We got to see that glass half full.
And life happens, you know, things happen. And the biggest thing that you can do is just kind of move forward, take what you've learned from it, take it, because you always can learn something from yourself, right? Like, my mom has been through through thick and thin. She has been through— you— oh my gosh, she's writing a book because it's like crazy how much she's been through. Yeah. And it's, it's, you know, she still has—
shout out to your mom. Should we give her a shout out?
Shout out, Mom, I love you so much. Her name, should we say? Brenda. Her name is Brenda.
Is she on social? Should we give her a proper plug? Or no, she never goes on it.
I don't even know.
All right, well, just the name.
Brenda Dorn.
Okay.
Uh, she has a different last name than me because she's remarried, but, um, but she's actually been married 4 times.
Oh gosh, so she's been through this?
Yes. One of her husbands being murdered.
Oh my God, crazy, crazy life.
Crazy life. And she's like, she's been— her life is like, I mean, she's been through it. So, and still to this day, she's optimistic, so optimistic and so loving and so kind and always positive and always finds the good things in life. And it's inspiring. Like, that's why I think why I am who I am, because my mom, you know, I got to watch somebody who'd been through so many things, always like, it was never catastrophic. It was always like Okay.
Hi, this is Jorge, and I wanted to interrupt the show just for a minute because I want to make sure that you're on my VIP mailing list, uh, for future podcasts and for insights and shortcuts on how to improve your health, uh, from everything on intermittent fasting to yoga to 8-minute workouts to how to just work better and how to have less stress and also how to manage pain. And it's totally free. Tell your loved ones about it, join it. It's over a quarter of a million people that are getting this email and it's going out every Monday and I want you to be a part of it so you know what's coming up next every week. All right guys, let's get back to the show. What can we learn?
We're okay, my teacher. Let's look at the brighter side. Let's not go to the negatives.
And you know, remind me, is she connected to my, my buddy Tony? Is that right?
Yeah, she knows him very well. She used to bring wounded warriors to his, to his, uh, his events, seminars.
Yeah, Tony, shout out to my, to my brother in the world, and really a big brother and a dad. He changed my life, uh, 20-plus years ago when he wrote the introduction of my first book 2001 called 8 Minutes in the Morning, and I still do that with yoga. We're gonna talk about yoga here as a way to strengthen our back, to reduce back pain. But, you know, I think all these people come into our lives, and I'll just end with this and we'll get started with back pain. But Oprah once said that life happens for us, not to us. Yes, it's here for us. And that is a mindset shift that, you know, I'm really happy that this last show was able to end it on top of working with Bravo's, you know, they have 89 million people that watch The Real Housewives of New York, and have worked with the cast, and I love these women. They've become like my best friends, you know, from Sonja to Dorinda, the Countess, just great people. But, you know, I feel like for me, the greatest lesson has been really understanding that everything, everything happens for a reason. And as Oprah says, take a breath and relax, it's gonna be okay.
And everything passes. You have to also remember in the midst of when something seems seems so just charged, yes, and horrible, and life's ending. It's like, you have to remember that life moves on, and those things, yeah, you will— it will be something in the past. It will be not as intense of a feeling, you know? And just live in that and be like, this will pass. I know it'll pass. I know.
Yeah.
And that's—
yeah, yeah. I had to go through a big reset last couple of weeks with my business and everything, and from this divorce with my ex-spouse. It's been hard. And, you know, I'm very blessed this year that I'm here in New York with you and in New York with my new partner and boyfriend. And I feel like, you know, as much as I see my kids— I see them as often as you go to California, so I go back a lot— but, you know, it's, it's difficult. But I'm blessed that, you know, I've met someone now that for me is kind of an equal and a partner in life. And I'm really blessed. So we're in a good place. So, you know, for those of you that may have back pain, because that is still an issue I deal with on occasion, and tell them, because we don't want to go way too long, but you have struggled with your back issues much more than me. I've had lower back pain, but you had— what is it called?
Yeah, so I have scoliosis and also a rotate— I have rotated ribs and rotated hips, which I think is the cause of the scoliosis because it's pulling in different directions, which means—
tell them, it's like an S, right?
It's like a snake.
We're going to show a picture, we're going to share a picture, guys.
My spine is like a snake, basically.
Wow. Yeah, there's the picture. Yeah, it's literally like an S shape, which is not ideal. And what Not ideal. So if anyone knows how to stand properly, you've had some insights. Yes, from Pete Egoscue, right?
The Egoscue method. So yeah, I'm— I just started doing Egoscue and it's incredible.
My mother did this 25 years ago before she passed. Oh, and I learned him from Tony. He was in San Diego. Where's Pete now? His team and all that?
I'm not sure because I don't work directly.
Okay, she do it—
I do it because a lot of people practice Egoscue now.
Yeah. Okay.
But, um, anyway So I, I—
and this is Egoscue method, guys. Yes. And there's a book he wrote. He's been endorsed by Tony Robbins for almost 3 decades.
Hearing people that are like completely hunched over. Yeah, I mean, it's really incredible. Anyway, so I, because of this issue I have, I never— and you know, because scoliosis is not really explained, it's kind of just habits that you create in the body that kind of cause things. Yeah. So I didn't realize for a lot of my younger years, in my 20s, that during cooking school and stuff, I was leaning, standing always to the right side.
So you were just kind of—
so without even knowing, in a posture of sorts, a negative posture, right? Instead of standing on your two feet with your knees slightly bent, because I think that's another thing people do is they lock knees a lot.
And if you're standing right now, do this. So walk them through proper standing because you're getting a class right now.
Yes. So it's never lock your knees. Like, it's not, you know, it takes— I get it. Like, I was always a knee-locker too, and it's just being aware of it and correcting it when you can.
Bend in the knee.
Slight bend in the knee.
Sounds like a yoga class.
Exactly. And then also, you know, when you're standing, be really tuned into your body and realize if like sometimes you're leaning more on your right leg, sometimes you're leaning more on your left leg, or sometimes, you know, because it is proper, you want to stay in balance. You want to be the same weight, or at least 3 pounds on each one of your legs.
Yeah. And I've learned this, I'll just add this for, from as a yogi now, and I feel like a yogi, I'm a yoga guru or whatever, instructor. I think teacher is better.
Actually certified.
Yes, 200 hours down was one of my bonuses in New York being here working with Real Housewives. And that'll start airing this next couple months. I think it's April, March. We haven't gotten the air date yet, but season 12. I mean, do you ever watch Bravo?
Sometimes, right?
I don't watch TV. No, you don't. But we do watch Live with Kelly and Ryan, please.
Yes, I do.
That's our next episode.
That's the one thing I do, I have to support the boyfriend.
Yes, yes, your boyfriend is great. And Kelly too. And we love Kelly, I love Kelly.
She's the best.
She's so great. And so for me, I would just add, I learned this in yoga, that think of your foot as having 3 points of contact when you're standing.
Yes, and spreading your toes.
Yes, you spread your toes for balance. And then we'll look at my ugly feet here. I'll have to take a picture here. Get your feet out too. Do you have pretty toes? They're prettier than mine.
I need to get a pedicure.
Yeah, and I have a cut on the other one. But there's our toes. We're gonna take a picture for you guys of our toes to share with you guys. But show them, spread them open there, like get them like proper. We'll add this to the newsletter so you guys can see it. But it's about understanding. Here, I'm gonna do a quick pic. This is kind of funny, but you know, not everyone knows how to stand.
This is really funny. Right?
All right, good. There we got our toes. Beautiful toes, by the way. Nice, nice color.
I have old, old toes.
And then you spread them as best you can. And then you have this, the ball of the, what do we call this part?
I mean, I guess it'd really be the ball of the foot, but the closer to the big toe.
You have that, you have the heel, the second point, and then the side. The ridge.
'Cause you use the side in yoga a lot. And people don't realize that pushing from the side of your foot is actually very, like for Warrior II, you're supposed to push on the side and a lot of people don't, they go the other way.
And you want to create a kind of like a lift of the arch. As best you can, and that will help you do that by lifting up the toes, pushing in on that ball that's underneath the big toe, the heel, and then the side ridge. You kind of create a lift.
You want to grab the floor.
It's like a tripod. Think of a tripod.
Like, a lot of people don't understand, and— or they walk, you know, yeah, like on the edges of their feet, outside, or they are inie walkers, or, you know, and you really want to have all points of contact on the floor and really grab the floor. And I think the best way to know if you're doing this is to be barefoot.
Yes.
We wear shoes all day and don't really realize that like shoes—
Should we tell them about barefoot movement? Have you read about it?
It's really— yeah.
We were meant to be barefoot as a species and shoes, and I hate to say for women, especially the women I work with, all these celebrities, they wear stilettos and they wear the red bottom boot or heel.
I can't.
Do you do the red bottoms?
I used to do that when I was 20 years old. I thought it was cool.
Back in the old days.
Now I'm like, if I put those on, I might die. I wear only chunky heels for some work. And then I try not to do anything crazy. I mean, I have exceptions to the rule. There's some heels that I can't get rid of that I love so much.
For special occasions, for photos.
But I do have to say, it's so bad for my back because I have a pinched nerve.
So, all right, so back to your back. So you've learned a lot, and standing proper with your feet down makes a huge difference.
And then sitting properly is a big deal too.
Well, let's finish the standing and let's do sitting. So for me, you use the foot posture we just gave you. Give them— walk them through it. So recap right now, guys. How to stand.
So when you're standing, make sure you're not trying to do anything weird. So shake your shoulders out and then be barefoot and then see how much you can— how you actually grab the ground with your full foot. Yeah, like you said, the 3 points of contact.
Try to think of your feet as 2 tripods, like camera, you know. Yeah, and, and toes up.
And then walk a little, see if you can actually grab the ground with your feet when you walk, right?
That's cool.
So that's— and then you can kind of realize like, wow, I really walk on the outsides of my feet, or I really walk on the insides of my feet. So that's important for walking, and it's the same with standing as well. And then like I said, be— you know, you're not gonna think of it when you're thinking of it, you're gonna be like, oh no, I stand normal. But in day-to-day life, when you're talking to someone or whatever, see if you're leaning to one side or the other, or you're kicking your hip out, because that's gonna— it's gonna cause imbalance in the body. So it's really important to just remember, you know, okay, I should be standing on both my feet, try to be as even as possible, and then not locking your knees.
Totally. Yeah, and I think that's it. And I think the key that I keep hearing— you know, I'm a big fan of Apple products, and I love they have an app to remind you to stand up every hour. Set those alarms on and stand. And you know, my whole thing here, I got my new— the New York House here, we just added a standing desk. You see it in the box?
Yeah, yeah.
We're gonna add it there so we can stand at your desk.
Sitting is so— like me with planes, oh, kills me, right?
Sitting, they say, is the I knew smoking.
It's so bad for you.
Do you know this? Because your body deteriorates.
I know.
So we have to stand on the airplane. Do you stand? I walk. I'm up every 30 minutes. People think, oh God, this guy, how many times are you gonna get up? And does he have a bladder problem?
But I get up.
I haven't done a headstand on a plane. Have you ever done that? I know, I'm just joking.
I do wear compression socks though. If you fly often, I highly recommend wearing compression socks.
Oh, that's a good tip.
Yeah, because I, like I said, I have a bad lymphatic system. System, so if I, after I fly on a plane, my calves and my ankles are so swollen, it's crazy.
Swollen, yeah.
Yeah, and the compression socks help, and also, you know, blood clots are a real thing, not to scare anyone, but when you fly often, you're more likely to struggle with that.
You are, yeah.
And compression socks do help with circulation.
And because we're sitting for 6 hours, one ride to one coast to the other coast, 4 to 6 hours, and if you go to Europe, it's about the same. The same. So move to improve. Stand, guys. Take these simple tips. If you have questions, you can email me at hello@jorgecruise.com. If they want to email you, do you have an email that you give out?
Uh, yeah, info@shainaskitchen.com.
Info@shainaskitchen. And please, you know, join my 19-day weight loss challenge. It starts right now. Head on over to Prevention Mag. That's them on social, @preventionmag. They have 7 million readers. We're going to have, I predict, I mean, at least 10,000 people doing this with us nationwide. I mean, maybe hopefully 100,000. I mean, if you have 7 million readers, I hope— I mean, I forget how big that is. Not too many magazines are that big. I know they're 30+ million with People magazine. AARP is a monster, 38 million. 7 million is good. And I think if you want a small community, I have a wall on Jorge Cruise on my Facebook. Join me for yoga. Shana's gonna be joining me for yoga. And make this commitment. Now, Shana, give them where you're at and your social so they can follow you on your blog and on your social.
