#152 - Dorinda Medley: End Hunger and Cravings
17 May 2022 · 21 min
In this episode of the Zero Hunger Revolution podcast, host Jorge Cruise interviews Real Housewives of New York City alum Dorinda Medley about her approach to intermittent fasting and overall wellness. Dorinda describes her fasting method as non‑aggressive and non‑scary, explaining how she adjusts her eating window for social events, uses salted water for an energy boost, and incorporates chia seed pudding and occasional fruit within an 8‑hour eating window. The conversation shifts to mid‑life hormonal changes, body‑image acceptance, and a new clothing line tailored to her evolving physique. Dorinda shares personal life challenges—including divorce, the death of her partner Richard, and navigating motherhood with her daughter Hannah—offering advice for women in their 40s and 50s about embracing bodily changes and adjusting lifestyle, diet, and exercise. They discuss future collaborations such as joint workouts, yoga classes, and fasted‑state aerobics, as well as social‑media branding, hashtag creation, and cross‑promotion. The episode closes with Jorge’s call to action for listeners to subscribe, review, and join the Zero Hunger Revolution.

So the thing that I like about this, what I'm doing with you, is it's not aggressive.
Yes. Okay.
It's not scary.
You don't dread it, and you don't feel like you're on a diet, and you're not hungry. That's the most important thing.
Like, I'll be honest with you, I don't know, I want to ask you about this. You do like the one dilemma— I had a dilemma last night, so two nights ago, right? And this is where it threw me.
Was it an evening event?
Yeah. It's an evening event. We were supposed to have dinner and I adjusted my fasting for it.
Yeah.
So I didn't start eating till 1 because I knew we were going to have dinner at like 7. Yeah. But we ended up not having dinner till 8:30.
So yeah.
Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise, but I'm also known as the Zero Hunger Guy. I'm a celebrity fitness trainer and a multiple New York Times bestselling diet author with 12 million fans. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Kelly Clarkson, or even Steve Harvey. My career started because I was addicted to sugar, carbs, salty snacks, and stress, and experts told me to simply count calories to get control. They were wrong. My passion to get radical control over both physical and emotional health has led me to find science-proven shortcuts that help my clients drop 25 belly inches or even more fast and permanently, and I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Zero Hunger Revolution.
I almost ate because everybody was eating. It was more of a social setting. For me, I don't really feel hungry.
But if you are doing a fast, there's nothing wrong with saying, hey, I'm fasting. I will say, like, when I go to breakfast sometimes, because I'll have meetings like this early in the morning and people want to eat like pancakes and I may do like a poached egg, but then if I eat this early, like at 10 o'clock in the morning, yeah, then you know, like, I'm having I give myself 4 hours, so I'll have my lunch by like 1, maybe 2, and then I don't eat at night. And if I go to dinner with some friends tonight, I'll have water. I'll tell them I'm fasting, and I can get away with it because I'm Jorge Cruise.
I find with this fasting that you don't wake— I don't wake up hungry.
See? All right, so let's walk through our average day so people can know. So you have your water.
I have my water first thing, lukewarm water.
Good.
And then use the bathroom, get all that out, paper, do all that stuff.
And then about probably 7-ish, I have my first cup of coffee, a little heavy cream in it, and I mix it. And then sometimes I put a little bit of coconut oil in it.
Good, perfect. Now, do you use the frother like I use, or do you whip it or blend it?
I haven't had time. In the Berkshires I did that.
Good, okay, good.
But it's fine. I'll tell you the truth, I have that, and then I have probably another one like at 9, and then I'm fine.
See, okay, so the truth is you're not hungry because people are like, come on, you're in there.
And then I drink— I'm really not. I mean, I literally have had nothing to eat this morning and I feel fine. What I'm gonna do is before I leave, I'm gonna like run downstairs and just grab like a big thing of water, give it a little salt in it, and it just energizes Oh my gosh, it does!
And tell people that, because when you put that salt, you feel the energy, right?
Absolutely.
See?
It's a totally different water when you add the salt. Yes!
Oh my gosh, thank you for saying that, because I think people are scared that it's bad for their blood pressure, or they're gonna have a heart attack.
So it's not just any salt, like I said, it has to be good salt, like Himalayan salt, and not a lot. I mean, I obviously was using too much, but no, I think it's great. And it doesn't— I mean, people are like, well, don't you wake up swollen? Don't you? No, you really don't.
You look gorgeous. So, so let's celebrate. So that's how you start your day. We know about what to eat during the 8-hour window. We know how to adjust it. I would say my only suggestion to you is maybe you've tried the chia seed puddings, right? Yes. You know, they're delicious.
I'll have them for lunch.
You can eat chia seed vanilla pudding.
The only thing I miss a little bit, I do miss a little bit of fruit.
You can, you can at lunch, you can do that. Yes, you can have carbs.
I'm dying for a banana.
No, during your 8-hour window. Do it, but do it as you break your fast. So tell them this, our goal for the summer. So you've got something starting in September, your new season. Yes. That's what we're going to talk about.
Yeah, we're going to start, and hopefully I'll be back. I hope they're going to ask me back. Well, I hope so.
Oh, and I'm talking to you.
You never know.
But we will talk about your radio show with Mr. Cohen. 6 more shows.
Well, not with him, but I'm on it as Umbrella.
And I had such the best time when we did our show. We'll have to give them the link so they can listen to it again.
You know what's so nice about this opportunity to do the radio show is You, you, for what now, 5 seasons? I could just housewife and you can get so just everything housewife.
Yeah.
And I try very hard off season to kind of act normal, but turn off of it. But you don't. Maybe your friends love the Housewives and they want to talk about it, promo it, be part of it all day. I mean, I went last night to the Kamala Harris, uh, uh, fundraiser, which was incredible. Brooklyn, Brooklyn's such a different worlds. Isn't it?
But it's like bohemian in a good way, right?
It's so different that it's— yes, I love you, Brooklyn. I couldn't personally ever live there. It's—
what is that? I don't want to say it's far away. What, 20 minutes?
I, I truly— no, it's not even that. It's, it's maybe only 20 minutes away in distance, but it's billions of miles away mentally for me. I'm sorry. I think I'm just too old. I said to Hannah last night, I know I'm just too old for this too laid-back mentality. Hannah was like, you gotta bring down the energy, because, you know, I'm very like— I'm very mellow.
And, and they're meditating at all times.
Very mellow.
Are they microdosing over there?
I mean, we, we literally went to this place. I'm not gonna say— it was a beautiful, uh, hotel that had a restaurant outside. I mean, beautiful. All that sort of like the view of the city, I'm sure. And, you know, the woman is sitting there. Now we got this— she's beautiful. Very artisan cheese plate. And she was going on and on about the honey that was that. I was like, I can't do this. I don't, I don't have this time to talk about this honey. Okay. Come on, moving. Next.
She was in love with her honey.
You know, she had like, I love that she had like the nose ring in and the brass appearing hair and very chic and laid back. And you could tell her blood pressure was probably 100 over 60.
You know what?
I'd love to be like that, everyone. I just think it's too late in the game for me. I don't move at that speed.
Me too. I know.
Hannah and I talked about that on the radio show. Hannah's like, Mom, you are—
And tell them Hannah's your daughter.
Hannah's my daughter. She was on again last week. She kicks off all my new series because I've got my second set of TV shows.
And it's Channel 102, is that right?
Yeah, 102 Radio Andy.
Go Andy!
Yeah. And she said, you know, Mom, my mother thrives in chaos.
She said that out loud. Yeah. Well, you like energy. We all need to grow.
Well, I can—
Hannah's—
there's just different personalities. Hannah's more like her father. I love to multitask. Like, I love to be doing 20 things at once.
Yeah. Yeah. Oh, you're not feeling alive.
Yeah. And I— and Hannah's like, it's so funny when we spend the weekends together. We went to Puerto Rico and because she likes that— I got her so moved. She likes to slow wake up. I like to get up.
Come on. We're going to that gym.
That's it.
Smart box.
I literally, I make my bed and that's it. That's it.
All right, you know, next time we do another one, I want to find out all about your fitness background, and we'll do a workout. Don't you think we should do that next time I'm in here? And then we will do a workout.
Yeah, my workout. Yeah, my routines mainly.
And if you get asked back, which you will, I pray, we're gonna maybe do something on the show.
Something exciting. Well, you're going to come to one of my yoga classes.
Yes!
Oh my God, teach with us.
Done.
Done.
And then we'll give them a little fasting encouragement. We'll tell them to do the aerobics in a fasted state, right? Tell us, right?
Because you guys— oh yes. Well, I'm not lying to you guys. Dare I say I have a bit of a flat stomach again.
Yes, you look gorgeous. No, seriously, you do, you do.
I, I can't believe that. It's not even such a weight thing, it's like where the weight is going.
Yeah. And to remind everyone, you're over 40, correct?
I'm 55 almost.
55. And you look gorgeous.
Listen, thank God. I'm 55. Thank God I'm 55 and feel good. Although I found out yesterday I have to have this removed. Oh, that little—
that's easy, right?
Yeah, it's easy, but I hate it.
What's your best advice?
I hate when my body lets me know.
For any woman or man, but mainly women, what's your best advice for women in midlife? You said it on the radio show about moving forward.
Yeah, not only that, I, I was talking to my friend Kathy last night about this. Kathy Lajury. Don't— I think the dirty little secret for women is You know, we— I don't know, I speak for myself, and Kathy was saying the same thing. You know, we work out, we do everything right, we eat right, we run, we lift. We paid— I must have paid— I mean, I could own a house in Malibu with what I paid trainers over the years. Hello.
Yeah.
And no matter what you do, no matter how you do it, no matter how dedicated you are, there is this sense in your 50s that your body betrays you.
It's just like we believe that.
Well, because no one tells you, really talks openly. We're We live in such a society that is so desperate to keep what we once had, not only in your body but in the things we had— youth, money, possessions— that all, you know, no one tells you at 50, no matter how fit you were your whole life, no matter what you've done, your body is going to change.
It's because of hormones. It does. It's just like—
so if we could train ourselves in our— if I would teach a woman anything in their 40s, just, yeah, just understand that your body's going to change. It's not gonna— maybe it's still gonna be a great body, but it becomes a different body that you have to adjust your lifestyle, your clothing, the way you dress, and just, you know, work out differently, eat differently.
Well, you're now embracing— not that you weren't eating small amounts before, but you really are aware that you're eating window, and it extends lifespan, and your hormones improve through fasting. The science shows that.
What I realized too is I just I just think as you get older, you know, there is a thing about, you know, being lean is healthy. Yeah, no, I don't believe being skinny. I believe in being healthy.
And, you know, I mean, look at these guys. Look at these guys, guys, look at this.
I don't want to be that scrawny. Yeah, you know, I, I've accepted the fact that I'm a little boobier now.
And, you know, because maybe people pay for this in LA.
You are a full-figured woman, and I have never in my life been described this way. I was like, okay, own it, right? And It's such a great thing, Jorge Cruise. After we spoke, like, what was it, 2 weeks ago?
Yeah.
I just went in my closet and I said, you know what, I'm not holding on to all these old clothes that once were—
Whoa. So you just, you did a detox, a closet detox?
That's good. Totally. Because now I got dressed this morning and this fits me. It looks good. This is new.
It's not new.
No, I actually had this made.
Oh, wow.
You know what's the best part of this? Hold on, everybody.
Give us a second.
I have about 4 of them in different colors because we're like, it's Mexican. No, this should be a line of clothes. It does. I have one with white, navy with white.
You'll be coming out with a line of clothes.
But look, it's like my uniform. And feel it stretching. It's like a uniform. I don't wear shorts.
No, no, you look gorgeous. And what beautiful colors.
So, so, you know, it's, it's, uh, you just have to accept that and work with the body that now is healthy and good and make it the best body you can Be like, I really want to make sure that when I'm 65, I'm strong. And I look in the mirror, I'm like, yeah, oh, you and I thank you.
And for people that just end on this, because it was such encouraging, because, you know, I'm going through a divorce.
You've been through—
you're a widow and you've been through death, death and divorce. Well, they're both— those are the two Ds.
No, I got divorced first. Then I got— then I was single for 6 years. Then I met Richard and then he got you.
And so what's your advice for someone that's in that place? Because I've had to work hard to get get through it. You've had to work hard twice to get through shit. I said, what's your advice?
My advice is, first of all, there is no such thing. I promise you, it's the love of your life and only one. There are many loves of your life. There are many loves of life. Yeah. Um, and you know, everything has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
It's not for us, and we're in denial that with that sometimes we think it's never gonna end, right?
And kind of try to remember, like I, I said it before, I say it again, Mother, God bless her, I love her so much. She's my sage, my everything. She gave me the best advice after Richard died. She said— or the best story— she said, Dorinda, if you met this man 8 years ago and he said, I'm going to be part of your life for 8 years, I'm going to raise Hannah, I'm going to love her like my own, we're going to have a wonderful life, but then I have to go, would you have taken him? I said, well, of course, Mom. She goes, well, that's what you got, so be thankful, don't be negative. And it kind of like It was an aha moment of like, yeah, why am I focusing on woe is me and not focusing like, wow, how lucky was I?
The glass was still half full, right?
Yes, that. And you know, I've got to tell you something, I would have never said this. Uh, you know, if someone said I was going to be in this place today, especially after Richard died, I'm happy. I miss Richard still. I love Richard still, but I rarely sit and think, oh, I wish I was back with Richard. It's not that I don't miss him. I love my life now. I've accepted this life, and it's a good life. It's a different life.
Yeah, but the new beginnings—
I would have never thought about this after he died. I didn't think there was— how am I going to live without him? How am I going to not be married in my 50s? How am I going to— how am I going to—
yeah, yeah.
And who knows, Jorge, in 10 years I could be, uh, married and pregnant again. No, I'm kidding.
Naughty girl, you're pregnant.
I would to the doctor's office. Horrifying. What? I'm almost 55 years old, so, you know, your body changes and all kinds of plumbing things change. You got to keep on top of that too.
You're on it.
Okay.
Am I? It's working well.
And she's doing the crazy exam with the laser, and she says, what are those moments? She says, I think you dropped the last bit of your eggs.
She's telling you this while you're there?
I've had little issues. I'm like, why am I bleeding a little bit? It's okay to say those words. Yeah, dirty word. So she's— I'm like, so I'm thinking to myself, what? She says, yes, I, I, I, I think you've kind of dropped your leg. Your body said one more go. Not that they were healthy, not that they would have come of anything, but can you imagine if I was 54, almost 55? God forbid. I mean, I love children. I had to tell the world that I was pregnant. She said, well, no, you wouldn't have kept them. The births are not healthy at that point. But when she said that, I was like, because, you know, at this age I haven't heard the word period or eggs or follicles in a long time.
Okay, well, these are the benefits of fasting and being healthy. Your body—
I could have done that.
You age-proof your body. It's still ready for action.
Yeah, no, and people get a little envious of the energy it brings you, the, you know, just clarity it brings you. The, you know, the confidence it brings you. Because nothing feels better than to, you know, work out, take a shower, and get dressed and feel good.
Oh, that's the motivation for today. Now tell people where they can find you on social.
Dorinda Medley, Twitter @DorindaMedley, Instagram @DorindaMedley.
Which one are you on more, Facebook or Instagram?
Instagram. I'm a huge Instagram. I'm trying to be a better Twitter person because I know people love that, and I have. I I tend to do more like, I'm really into the news and all that kind of stuff. And yeah, just, I love a good Insta story. So DM me, DM Jorge.
Please, we're going to be doing more together. We need a hashtag. What should be our hashtag for this project? Like, how about Dorinda and Jorge? #DorindaJorge. Or #8Pounds, right? The 8 pounds is done. Think of something. Or there's Brooke and I, Brooke Burke in Malibu. She, she, we have a hashtag about Brooke and Jorge. I always let the girl go first. Ladies first.
Yeah.
Oh, Jorge, I like that. How would we spell that? That's our hashtag. Oh, let's use it today. D-O-R. D-O-R. How would you—
like that?
But that says door.
No, we gotta do Jorge first and then add the door in front of it. No, a door like that. Yeah, it's a Dora Jorge. Oh, all right, does that work?
Let's— this is our hashtag, guys. Follow us at Dora Jorge Cruise. Yeah, no, let's try. Well, we'll find out right now. So this is our hashtag for all things Dora and Jorge. I kind of like it. It kind of looks like Givenchy.
Don't say Giovanni.
I said Givenchy, but do you like both?
I know, I know. I like Givenchy.
You kind of started it, which accounts for—
every weekend you and I should post our favorite recipe.
Okay, let's do that.
You should post your chia seed one. That's amazing, you guys. It really works.
It truly works. All right, and then follow us at @dorjorgecruise.
I love it.
Hashtag that. We love it.
I love you. You're going back tomorrow?
I'm going back tomorrow.
I love Kelly Ripa.
Tell her.
Oh, she— Kelly Ripa. Can I tell you my Kelly Ripa moment?
Please.
I just had started on, um, The Housewives. I just had my season, and it's all—
What was your first year again?
Season 7.
Season 7. What year was that? Do you remember?
Well, it was 5 years ago. Yeah, so, um, it was season 7. Why season 7, 8, 9, 10, 11? Yeah, 7, because we're on season 12. Can you imagine coming up? Not that I know it was the end, but maybe. And I had just finished, and Andy had had a big Sirius Radio launch party because he was just launching Radio Andy. And she came up to me, she said to me, Kelly Cantu said hi. I'm like, you know, because at that point I just It's so funny because while you're filming, no one knows you're filming. Yeah. And so no one knows you're out there yet. So you're not— not that I'm famous, but you're not notable enough, you know. You have no, no ride. Yes. So this is kind of the first time I'm out at a party where the season had launched and people are now saying, "Do we hug?" Kelly Ripa comes up to me, says, "Jovinda, I'm Kelly Ripa. I love your hair. I think your hair is fantastic." I was like—
and I'll see you in 2 weeks. I'll be back.
Okay.
And we'll post on Friday. So again, we're posting on Friday.
Workshops.
Let's do that.
All right, beautiful.
We'll come, we'll do a little interview there.
You should do like a health and wellness retreat up there.
Let's do that.
All right, bye guys.
