#165 - WHY YOU'RE HUNGRY: Causes
8 Jan 2024 · 25 min
Jorge Cruise identifies four main causes of persistent hunger: emotional stress, carbohydrate-driven insulin spikes, mineral deficiencies from depleted soil, and sodium deficiency. He's launching a five-part series and introducing Zero Hunger Water, debuting at Expo West.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast, Feel Great All Day, brought to you by Zero Hunger Water. Well, welcome to the show, guys. I'm Jorge Cruise, and I am thrilled you're here right now. Uh, this podcast, its ethos, its spirit, its heart is something that I have sought for my entire career as an author, and that is to feel great all day, both physically and emotionally. You know, we have confidence where you can go out there and seize the day by feeling the best you can. I've just turned 52 this last year. I'm going to be turning 53 this coming year, which I can't even believe it. I was having coffee this morning with a buddy, and he's like, you know you're going to be 53. I was like, no, I'm 51, 52. He's like, uh, no. So regardless, I feel that good. I don't even know how old I am. And that's my goal for you, to super age out where you feel great. I was just listening to a dear friend of mine. You guys know who Martha Stewart is. She's gonna be on the podcast this year as well. And she just did a masterclass where she talks about super aging. And that's one of the benefits of understanding what we're gonna be talking about today. So let's get to it, guys. I call this series, it's a 5-part series, Why You Are Hungry. Now the title's hopefully enticing to you because today we're gonna talk about the causes. But the whole show is about getting control. And the series, it's 5 parts. There's going to be 4 more parts after today. And throughout these different parts, and they're all free, they're all on YouTube, youtube.com/jorgecruise, or you can simply scan— oops, sorry— scan this QR code. Didn't mean to hit the mic there. And then just make it happen. Just go to the webpage. You can follow us on YouTube. It's also on Spotify. It's on Apple. We have show notes and we have a PDF as well that you can get on episode 169. That's linked over there. But so I was talking to my friend today at, uh, coffee, and he's like, you know, you're 53 this year. And my birthday is in March, March 6th. And this March 12th, we're going to be at Expo West, which is a big event in Los Angeles, in Anaheim, California, where we're going to be premiering our baby. Now I say our baby because it's a village. It takes a village. This is Zero Hunger Water. Have you guys heard of it? If you are out there on social media, here, let me put it towards our second camera here. We We call it the Hunger Eraser. It is absolutely delicious. This is blood orange. It's basically water with electrolytes, and you're gonna be seeing it on the show because obviously, uh, it's what I drink all the time. I've been drinking it for almost 3 years, homemade versions of it, and it's been featured in magazines. It's been featured on The Doctor Show. Uh, it's been everywhere, but it hasn't been in a ready-to-drink like this ever, and it's coming out for the first time on March the 12th. So I am so excited and I'd love to see you in Anaheim. If you guys want to come, just jot down the date so you have it. It starts on the 13th, it goes 13th, 14th, 15th, and I think the 16th is the absolute last day you can come visit us. Definitely Google it. It's called Expo West. We'll have a booth there. You'll meet me. I'll be there. I'll be signing off copies, galleys of the new book I have coming out called The Hunger Eraser, but I'll be there with the water giving out samples so you you guys can try it. Come to Los Angeles, guys. David Allred will be there. Shout out to David. What's up, David? He's my business partner. He is the other half of this company. He has been in beverage his whole life, pretty much, uh, in the last 8 years or so at least. And he has an incredible direct-to-consumer keto wine company called Dry Farm Wines. Have you guys heard of it? It's absolutely the best if you like drinking because it has no sugar, which means no hangovers, things like that. So it's a great product. And when we met, we immediately knew the vision for this could be realized. And so it's coming directly to you guys. Zerohungerwater.com, and they're the sponsor of the show. So big special thanks to our team and everyone behind Zero Hunger Water. So with that said, what is this series about? Because if you're here right now, you probably want to know the causes of why you're not— I hate to say it, but not in control of your appetite. And in today's world, it is the number one news story, uh, on any entertainment show. About every other week I see Oprah or I see Sharon Osbourne or someone like that has not only dropped the weight after decades of struggling, which I get, but also they're feeling better than ever. And these are 60, 70-year-olds that absolutely look stunning, you know, absolutely look stunning. And you may think that someone like myself who is, you know, very much into health and nutrition would be against medications or prescriptions like Ozempic. And you're going to find out in the series, we're going to talk about it in the next episode, that I am not at all, because I believe they're tools, you know. And I have so many friends that over the last 20-plus years of writing books, especially doctor friends that I've featured in my books, that I reach out to these people and they're part of my chosen family, right? And I ask them, I said, so what do you guys think about these injectables that everyone's doing? And they're public about it. It's not even— no one's hiding it anymore. There's no shame in it, right, guys? Ozempic is out there, all these other types of injectables. And they say, well, they're great tools if you're obese or you're struggling with weight for many years, but use it episodically, which means use it for example, 2 months on and then 2 months off. Because if you become dependent on it where it's something you use consistently and forever and always, you dysregulate your system. Now, I don't want to talk about that on this episode because that's a solution, a modern solution. We're going to talk about that on the next episode, kind of like the everyday solutions. This has now become an everyday option for many celebrities in Hollywood. They're just putting in one injection a week and they drop massive weight. The only thing is it does dysregulate your digestive system and you can get backed up, you can stop going to the bathroom. There's all sorts of other issues like hair loss and, and even suicidal thoughts, but let's not talk about that because it's still a tool that can work if you really need that, but you want to be using other options as well. So we're going to have a whole arsenal of everyday solutions tomorrow. And then the newest solution will be the episode after that, which we're going to talk about things like Zero Hunger Water minerals, things like magnesium, potassium, and sodium. That is a natural way with zero side effects. To turn off your hunger and permanently turn off. It's like the magic code to the lock. You can't get into the lock with the diamond in there with all these things unless you have the right combination. We want to do this so it's fun, it's delicious, and it's sustainable long-term. And that's kind of been my goal. You probably know me from, if you don't, if you know me from my books, great. But if you don't, let me show you a little history here. This is moi. This is me back in the day. It was called 8 Minutes in the Morning, my very first book in 2001, co-written, or I should say forward by Anthony Robbins. Hopefully you guys know who he is. He's the author of many books, New York Times bestsellers. And if you are on Netflix ever, go check out Tony's documentary called I'm Not Your Guru. But Tony helped write this introduction in 2001. It was 20+ years ago, and I've written 39 books. I'm writing, working on my 40th. I can't wait to share with you guys at Expo West. It'll be there as well. So I'm excited for all that. But my focus has come down to this one topic because I used to think weight loss was the key to it. All right. And weight loss was everything. Well, it's not because that's just the end result. The key is controlling hunger. That's what we're going to do on this series. We're going to discover the causes of that, of why we're hungry today. And then tomorrow we're going to look at ways of getting control. And for the next 2 days, we'll do that. And then we're going to put together kind of a couple of things, a bonus episode on the benefits of learning, knowing how to control your hunger that take you way beyond weight loss. Things like super aging, where you can really live a quality life. Like someone, someone who's a dear friend is Martha Stewart. I've known her for many years. I was in New York last year, saw her. She agreed to be on the podcast. I'm going to be on hers, but she is incredible. She's in her 80s, cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit, and has just launched her masterclass. I just finished watching it on how to be a boss. And she is, she's amazing. She has so much energy and she's gardening and actively working. That's called superaging, where you are not falling apart at, in your, in your 50s or 60s or 70s or 80s, where you're like Cher going on tour in your 70s. Right. It's just crazy that we can do that, but we can. And those are the benefits we're going to talk about on the shows, on the show, as well as about like, if you can control your hunger and you can keep your waistline small, because your waistline Write this down, guys. Your waistline is your lifeline. I learned that years ago from a man. If you Google him, his name was Jack LaLanne. I met him in person. And Jack LaLanne used to work with Arnold, with the Weider family. He was the staple. He was the first guy ever on national television in the 1950s to talk about fitness. And so Jack LaLanne used to wear a buckle that said on his belt, right? That said, your lifeline is your waistline. And so we want to keep your waistline a small, you know, and that's something we're going to talk about on the show as well, because if you can get that waistline to reduce and where you don't have belly fat, you're going to lower your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, all the things that so many of us are scared of. You're going to extend your lifespan. So you become a superager. You're going to prevent diseases and performance, whether it's in the sports departments, the gym, if it's about making love, you're going to have the performance of your life because your Your body is going to be working at its best when it's at, when you have a small waist circumference. And that's the bottom line. It's not about weight loss. We want muscle. We want lean muscle on our arms. We want to feel good. So we have strength when we're in our 70s, 80s, and we're super aging out there where 80 is like 60 or 50. That's what's going to be happening. So that's what I want you to experience on this series here. And for me, you know, I'm half Colombian. My mother's from South America. My dad's American. They both passed, actually, but because I'm, I think, Latin partly, and I speak Spanish, so buenos días if you speak Spanish. But I have a lot of passion. I may speak a little quick. I try to intentionally speak slower. I was thinking of my dad and how he spoke. He was a white man. He would speak very slow, but my mom was quick. So, I'm a little combination of both. So, please bear with me if I do get excited, but I can tell you, I am so excited for you to want to start this journey with us today. So, let's get started with the topic, the causes. All right. The causes. Simply put, why are we hungry? So I want to ask you to do one thing right now. Now you can pause this, uh, if you're watching it on YouTube, just hit the pause button. But I'm going to give you an assignment right now for 1 minute and grab a hardbound journal or an iPad. I write things on my iPad, I have one of these little minis. You can write things with your pencil, but if you have a real pencil, get it out. If you have a pen, if you have paper, just get something to jot with. And I want you to write down 3 reasons why you think you're hungry right now. 3 reasons why you feel like maybe tonight when it's time to go to bed and you've already had a proper dinner and hopefully had some healthy protein, healthy fats, and some good carbs, you're not hungry at all, but you end up going in the kitchen and you, you scoop out some ice cream or you have a cookie that's your kid's cookies, your grandkids' cookies, or they're your cookies, but you're not supposed to eat them at 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, or 11 o'clock at night. So I want you to think like that and think, why am I hungry when I'm not really hungry? Meaning, you know, you just had a meal, but why are you still hungry? And why can't you control yourself and put the hand back in the pocket instead of it going into the refrigerator or the cabinet? And why can't you control your hand? And why can't it stop putting the food in your mouth where then you're eating the food you don't want to very much eat because you know what happens long term. As if you eat sugar and carbs, what happens is you raise insulin and you gain belly fat. That's the bottom line. So we all know this, right? So write down 3 reasons right now why you think you're hungry, especially when you shouldn't be. So I'm gonna just chill here for a minute. I put on some solo light music, give you 1 minute right now. You can pause it or you can just bear with me. I'm gonna be silent for 1 minute. Think about this. Why are you hungry? Look at your reasons. Is it people in your house that may be influencing you because they bought those cookies, but they're not yours, right? So that's okay. You can put down your spouse, uh, your kids. Hey, it's legit. Um, I have a dear friend, Brooke Burke, who's public about her thyroid not being well. And shout out to Brooke Burke, but her Thyroid is tough. When you don't have thyroid that works properly, it can make you hungrier at times. So shout out to people that have thyroid issues. Think about that. That's legit. What else? Is it the way you were raised that food is love, you know? Can you feel a little sad at night or stressed? Maybe you're super excited and you're overeating. Hey, those are all legit too. Jot them down. 20 more seconds. Think right now, why am I hungry? And if you have more than 3 reasons, that's okay too. All right. So, with that, here's what I'm going to tell you to do. Take that pencil and I want you to cross them out. Now, most likely you'll be like, what are you thinking, Mr. Cruise? Why am I crossing them out? Here's something I want to suggest to you. It's not your fault. It's not your fault at all that you're hungry at all at night, especially after you ate. My goodness, if you just ate and you're still hungry, there are only 4 reasons that most likely you're hungry. And these are 4 legit reasons that over 23 years as an author and almost 30 years as a trainer, I have seen in people all ages, whether they're teenagers in their 20s, college age, they're busy professionals in their 30s and 40s. They're like me in their 50s and midlife and, or 60s, 70s, like Martha Stewart or Cher. These are the 4 main reasons. Number 1, jot this down, guys. Number 1, emotional stress. You guys know what I mean? This means emotional stress, both good and bad. Any kind of stress. It could be you just got a promotion and you're celebrating. You went out to dinner with your best friend, your loved one, and you are just eating like it's Thanksgiving, making a toast, drinking a little too much alcohol, All those are empty calories. So there's a reason. Happiness, right? Joy, joy, celebration. Or it could be bad news. Bad news could cause you to overeat. So it's emotional stress like that. It could be loneliness. It could be, for me, you know, when I was a kid and I was living in San Diego, I was lonely. I didn't have a lot of friends. I didn't speak English that well because I spoke Spanish first. I was born in Mexico City. My mother's from South America. And so we spoke, hablamos español. So speaking Spanish sometimes can isolate you if everyone else speaks English. You know, is that why you maybe are overweight? I don't know. For me, that was kind of a part of it, but I'm going to tell you emotional stress is the first reason for most people. Then what happens when we have emotional stress in our lives? The second thing happens. We're drawn to one type of macronutrient, otherwise known as carbohydrates. You guys know what I mean? Carbs. Because once we're stressed, the second reason, the second cause of hunger is that we are eating carbs. Now, there are 3 main macronutrients, proteins and fats and carbs, right? Now, the other 2 aren't going to cause insulin to go up and it's going to cause belly fat. The science has shown that whether it's eating a ribeye, butter, eggs, things like that, bacon, right? It's not going to raise your insulin. You're not going to gain a lot of weight. It's going to turn off your hunger. It shuts off hunger. But guess what carbs and sugars do and salty snack foods even. It's not the salt. I love salt. You'll know that. But it's the potato chips, which I love too. But when you combine potato chips with salt, I'm going to tell you issues happen, but more importantly, the potatoes are going to activate your hunger, right? Any carbohydrate is going to activate your hunger, whether it's a processed one, whether it's sugar out of a soda, out of orange juice, or if it's couscous or pasta, it's just going to cause hunger. It just is because carbs and sugars break down into the same thing that raise insulin, but also cause hunger to be activated. It's one of the mechanisms to creating more hunger that way. That way, unfortunately, you never get satisfied. You literally always are hungry if you're eating carbohydrates. You'll never feel satisfied, ever. I promise you that. I, I've worked with way too many people through my books, millions of people, to know that those that eat carbs and are vegans or vegetarians, they're the hungriest of all. And it's hard to fill up on that unless it's high volume and high fiber, which is fine, but you're gonna be hungry long term. You just really are. You know, it's not like a steak or chicken or fish or some sort of lentil. Something that's a little more substantial. It's gonna hold you up and healthy fats as well. So carbs are the second reason that we usually do it. The third reason is bad topsoil. Now, what is topsoil? Well, the, what the goal is healthy soil that has all these fertilizers in it and has things that can feed the food, the nutrients, the minerals that it needs. And in today's world, unless you're Martha Stewart, which I know you and I aren't, maybe Martha's watching. So hi Martha. You're the exception to the rule, Martha, and those that have their own farms. With healthy soil. But if you don't have healthy soil in the food you're eating, you're gonna be low in, in two special minerals that help turn off hunger, and that is potassium and magnesium. You need both of those minerals to turn down hunger and to sleep well, to, to help your body be regulated, especially regulating hunger. And if you don't have healthy topsoil in the foods you're eating, you're not gonna regulate your hunger. So topsoil and its lack of good fertilizer— I don't wanna get into the details of that, but you guys know what's in there. If you don't have that rich topsoil, you're not going to get that kind of nutrients in the food you're eating. So the topsoil is a sad thing. That's the third reason. And the final reason, and this is kind of a sad one in my opinion, is that we as a society and as a government, even in the U.S. at least, have made salt, um, well, a villain. We've made salt this thing that causes heart attacks and hypertension and all sorts of heart issues because it raises blood pressure. And I can tell you, I get it. If that's something a substance does, We would vilify it and tell everyone, don't even put salt on the table. You just get pepper. So salt, a lot of times in today's places like restaurants, wherever you go, they don't have the actual salts anymore. You have to ask people for salt on the table. And so why have we vilified salt? Well, the FDA has given it a certain regular amount that you can maximize, and the amount is so small that it's a safety precaution because there is evidence that salt can raise blood pressure, but only, and listen to me on this, guys, this is huge. You gotta hear me on this, but only if you pair sodium with a high sugar or carb diet. The very thing we said to avoid, right? Not when you eat healthy proteins and fats. If you do salt on a ribeye, salt on eggs, things like that, you're not gonna have any problem. Your blood pressure will not go up. But if you're putting salt on carbs, on pizza, weird things like that, potato chips, I know that sounds delicious, right? But it's a perfect storm for high blood pressure. And the man who taught me this years ago is Dr. James DiNicolae Antonio. And Dr. James has a book called The Mineral Fix, which I highly recommend you all read. I'm putting it in the show notes. It's critical. He also has a book called The Salt Fix. He has a whole series of books on minerals. He's the king of minerals. I love Dr. James. He has been in many articles that were featuring me. He's been really the voice for bringing back salt into so many people's lives and getting people to realize that if you can separate salt from carbs, you're going to be fine. Remember again, it's carbs that are the issue, not the salt. The salt is going to turn down hunger. And when you turn down hunger, you have control. And we're going to talk about that on tomorrow's show and the one after, uh, on that, on options and solutions. But those are the fit 4 main reasons we're hungry. The 4 main causes. Again, one more time. It's emotional stress is number 1. Number 2, it's sugar and carbs, right? Number 3, it's the topsoil. And number 4, fourth reason is the vilification of sodium. And these are all things we don't really control. I mean, emotional stress is hard to control. Carbs are everywhere. It's hard to control that. You, unless you have a garden, you can't control the topsoil and salts. I mean, if they don't put it out there and you forget about it, what are you going to bring salt to your own restaurant or you're going to have it at home? Hopefully, but we're scared of it. Literally, it's been tagged as a dangerous food. So Common sense says avoid, right? But what you're going to learn throughout this series is that salt and certain minerals like magnesium and potassium are the very friends that you need to transform your health. And if you're watching this series and want to jump to episode 167, that's the one that we talk about the minerals that are going to be the, your friends, the trio, I call them, of pure health and the pillars of health. And that is the very minerals we've just talked about. And that's episode 167. But please listen to tomorrow's episode because tomorrow we're going to be talking about the more traditional options, the everyday solutions. And we're going to be talking about things like coffee, fiber, Ozempic, things that I actually give my thumbs up on if you want to utilize them as a tool, not necessarily the most effective, and they'll have side effects, but we're going to talk about that. And we're going to talk about some weird things too out there that people are doing beyond those items that truly are weird, like tapeworms, because I can tell you, I've seen it all in my entire career and people will do anything to control their hunger and lose weight. And you don't need to do that. You need to understand one thing, that it needs to be something you can sustain long-term. And more importantly, something that you can enjoy, because that's how you're going to sustain it long-term is if you enjoy it. If you don't enjoy the process, you're not going to finish the race. You're not going to finish that and you're not going to see the results. And I'll show you the results of doing this program for like 7 days. You're going to lose a minimum, in my opinion, of 2 pounds a day. Now you may not do that every day. It may take a day or two to activate. But once you do, check this out. This is something I used to take on TV all the time on Dr. Oz. You guys remember Dr. Oz? This is 5 pounds of belly fat. Isn't that sexy there? Can you guys see it? And, and this is basically, you know, what you could lose in 3 or 4 days. So get ready to transform your health. Get ready to lose belly fat. Get ready to shrink your waist circumference. And more importantly, not just understand why you're hungry, but get control. Get control and have many options, many solutions so you can activate the ones that you want and you can transform your health. And the confidence that comes from having control over how good you feel, and more importantly, how great your family feels and your loved ones. And then you can become part of this revolution. We call it the Zero Hunger Revolution, where you truly can turn off hunger when you want using minerals. That's my hope for you and other things as well, of course.
