#17 - The Brain Food That Reduces Back Pain
21 Jan 2020 · 18 min
In this episode of the Jorge Cruise Podcast, host Jorge Cruise and guest co‑host Shana Taylor discuss how specific "brain foods" can reduce inflammation and alleviate back pain. They explain why healthy fats such as avocado, coconut, MCT, olive, and walnut oils are superior to canola oil, and they recommend marine collagen (from Within Us Naturals) and bone broth (Kettle & Fire) for joint and spinal health. The conversation also covers mineral‑rich salts like Celtic, Himalayan, and Redmond pink salt, and why their mineral content matters. Throughout the dialogue they share personal anecdotes about travel, hotel cooking experiences, and frustrations with large retailers (Whole Foods, Amazon) over oil and packaging choices. The episode includes multiple promotional plugs for their newsletters, products, and a call‑to‑action for listeners to leave reviews and subscribe. The overall tone is conversational, enthusiastic, and promotional, with a focus on practical dietary strategies for pain reduction.

You are kind of like the Wonder Woman of health. I love it. So thank you, Wonder Woman, of course, for being here.
Thank you for having me this month.
Oh my gosh, and it is Martin Luther King Jr. Is that his birthday today, or is it just we observe it today? I don't know.
I actually don't know, but I think it's just a day that's dedicated to him.
Yeah, I think that he's done— I'm not sure if kids have off today.
I think so, schools do.
Yeah. Yeah, so happy day off if you're, if you're a teacher. And regardless, it's a Monday, and we're happy to be talking because our topic today is about brain food, and really the best brain food that helps reduce inflammation in the body. And it's odd, but a lot of times people don't realize that what you eat, and things that can help the brain can help your spine. And so we're talking about, we're kind of connecting that, that's an unusual way, to back pain, because a lot of times—
Yes, well inflammation has a lot to do with back pain.
Well, last week you shared about what you and Ryan did when you went to that, what was that hotel?
Amangiri.
And then you had them reduce the—
well, they were using canola oil and we got sick.
That's the opposite of a brain food.
Please, no more canola oil.
Canola oil is like—
they were very, very, very, very accommodating and used avocado oil instead the whole time we were there to cook anything that we were eating.
Yeah, and that's so powerful because, you know, a lot of times, especially as we get older, and I, you know, working with AARP and prevention, and a lot of my, my celebs are baby boomers, you know, whether the Real Housewives of New York, I mean, so Just a couple months ago turned 56. So if you're in your 40s or 50s, and I'm getting closer to 49 March, so a couple, couple, what, 8, 9 weeks away. And I'll tell you, for me, you know, inflammation causes pain everywhere, but the back is the worst place because then you can't work well. You know, when you're in chronic pain, you just feel like poop.
Yeah, no motivation.
Yeah, so I think, and you're someone who struggled with back pain, I mean, you're kind of a back pain expert.
I still struggle with back pain. It's not as nearly as bad as what it's been in the past, that's for sure. But, you know, I still struggle with my pinched nerve, um, which goes— shoots down the back of my leg, um, which is horrific when it's really bad. Um, but it's from sitting a lot, you know. I travel, I'm in planes all the time, and it doesn't matter how many times I try to stand in a plane, you know, sitting for long periods is, is never really good. And what I've learned that really has helped me the, the most, um, is like back to what you said, what you put in your body really, really has to do and help a lot with that kind of inflammation and and pain is MCT oils, which are good fats which strengthen a lot of—
So these are some of the brain foods, the health, I mean basically the best brain foods. I mean there are a couple exceptions. I think healthy fats we're gonna talk about today and collagen maybe?
Collagen was gonna be my number one. Collagen changed my back. I used to have consistent lower back pain no matter what I did. Really? As soon as I sat anywhere, it was just like, Oh, horrible. Yeah. So, and I tried the turmeric, I tried, I tried so many different things, and then I started taking marine collagen, and you're the biggest fan of the marine collagen. Yeah, marine collagen is by far the— like, I don't do bovine, I don't do, I don't do any other collagen.
Bovine is from beef, correct? And then there's one from chicken.
Chicken, yeah. And I think, first of all, chicken— I still eat chicken sometimes, actually, I'm not a vegan, but chicken's a very inflammatory food. Um, so I choose— obviously you have to do a trusted brand that does marine collagen because some someone that actually tests for, you know, the— why am I blanking?
The mercury.
Mercury, yes. Yes, the mercury. Which, you know, is important to check. Yeah. So the company that I use is from Canada. They're called Within Us Naturals and they're incredible and they test every single batch for mercury and they're very, very—
And that's the brand you like. Give them a shout out one more time.
That's what I take. So they're called Within Us Naturals.
Within Us.
Yeah, they're my favorite. And you know, you know, Canada has higher regulations for food.
Wow.
Yeah, they do, right? America.
Yeah, I mean, that weird. I mean, we talked last week about Whole Foods still uses canola oil. I mean, hello, Whole Foods.
You're supposed to be like a self— it gets— it's just healthy, healthy grocery store. I can't—
we need to go have a talk with them too, right?
Which means we need to have a talk with Amazon, which I already want to. I love Amazon, don't get me wrong.
Jeff Bezos, we're talking to you, Mr. Bezos.
Talking to you, Bezos. Yes. Um, this, the recycle system, I feel like they should have some kind of system with all these cardboard boxes because they're also toxic. Yeah. Of how much they are. I mean, if you look at any delivery truck, it's 75% Amazon. And I'm like, you should have a pickup service that takes all your Amazon boxes and whether you repurpose them or you recycle them as a business, like somebody needs to get on that because it's, it's It's crazy how many cardboard boxes that we're using because of all the delivery friends.
Oh my gosh.
Anyway, so I have a conversation with him about helping with recycling. And canola oil. And also, why the heck are you using canola oil and feeding people canola oil?
I think he just needs a little bit of our help. He's been doing that for years. It's not like he started it, but he recently bought it. I mean, it's nice that he bought it. He had a little extra money and he bought Whole Foods.
Of course, that's a great purchase.
I would like to buy one too, but you don't have a Whole Foods in your pocket.
I would like to buy Air One, but I don't think they're selling it.
No, no.
So he's definitely someone we'll talk to.
But for the, the best brain foods, guys, for me, definitely— I mean, I know the brain is made up so much of healthy fats, it's mainly all fat. My healthiest fat, my tip number 1, is avocado oil. Coconut oil too, it has that coconut flavor. I love Barlean's, but they have one that doesn't have the flavor. Barlean's Organic, they used to sell— they still sell flaxseed oil.
Coconut oil is soapier than others. Yeah, that's something to, you know, if you get a really strong flavored soapy coconut oil, try a different brand because yeah, I think depending on where it's coming from— I love the flavor of coconut oil, but If I get that soapy coconut oil, it's so strong and waxy. Yeah.
And I feel like, you know, you do get what you pay for. I hate to say that, but whether it's that or— we'll talk about your beeswax candles too— because I feel like people think coconut oil from this or that place is all the same, and I'm afraid there's different grades of oils, different pressings of oils.
And organic is important.
And being organic is important. Just be cautious, guys, because if you're going to do avocado oil, I use my, my buddy's, Mark Sisson. He's 66 years young. He has— have you seen his abs? I have to show you his abs. This man, I will post a picture. We're going to do a podcast together because he and I have been best friends forever, um, I mean, since we were in Malibu. And Mark is now 66, he's gonna be 67 this year. And, you know, he sold his company to, um, I don't have it on here, to Kraft. Last year for $200 million. So I like Amen to Kraft. They used to sell hot dogs and they still do, but people—
yeah, well, you have to get with the times. You're not gonna—
they're updating—
as a company if you're not gonna try to give people a little bit healthier alternatives.
But Mark's in phenomenal shape. He has the body of a 20-year-old. He looks amazing. And his wife is 63 years young and gorgeous, running around in a bikini. And that's what I want to be, 66, running around with a six-pack looking like I'm a 20-year-old, you know.
I want to be 28 doing that.
Yeah, no, totally. Please, you're there. And so So for me, it's avocado, coconut oil. Olive oil is good too.
I love olive oil.
Definitely has different flavor. I think it's about the flavoring. It's like wine.
But it does, you know, but coconut or olive oil should be used more for salads and more raw things.

It's over a quarter of a million people that are getting this email, and it's going out every Monday, and I want you to be a part of it so you know what's coming up next every week. All right guys, let's get back to the show.
So olive oil is— which I think some people get to have gotten to know this, and maybe not everyone, but olive oil is better to cook everything that's raw or put on everything raw. So salads or simple sauté that's not super high heat, because olive oil actually turns acidic if it's too high temperature for cooking. So if you're roasting something, you know, it's— don't, don't use olive oil. Use avocado oil.
Don't use it to make popcorn with.
Also, walnut oil is one of my favorites too, and it's high temperature heat. Yeah, and it tastes very good. I use— I mix it with my— in my salad dressing sometimes. I like that. Yeah.
And then I love walnuts.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you should get walnut oil. It's really good, yeah. Walnut oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, MCT oil. Those are our favorite oils, yeah. Those are my favorite, all of them.
So that's a brain food that will reduce inflammation, back pain, all that, and then on the food department, like what we said, collagen, which is bone broth. Literally back, one of my oldest publishers, she passed a few years ago, was Louise Hay from Hay House, and she's published so many incredible books, but she used to be the woman in her 80s, she passed at 90 years young, but you know, gorgeous, but she kept always, every Monday, she would start her week with a crock pot, back in the day, of bone broth. And back then she would buy like femurs of cows and all that bone marrow, and let them soak and create a broth, and it would be a 10-hour project.
Yeah, yeah, the longer you simmer that broth, the better it is for you. And you— and what I love about bone broth too is you can throw so many things in it. I mean, you can get every herb in there, you can get every mushroom in there, you can get every—
so yummy—
so many good things to make that flavor That's Shuri, guys.
She's shaking it out. Hey, Shuri. She made a guest appearance when she shook it out. This is my boyfriend's dog, Shuri. She's precious.
She's so cute.
She's a rescue.
She's got the snuggies.
She is. But collagen, guys, make that a brain food for this year. And it's gonna help your spine, it's gonna help your bones.
Helps your hair growth.
Tell them, right?
Helps your skin, helps your joints. I mean, it's really, there is no downfall for taking collagen, especially like I said, I really, preach marine. Your body also absorbs the most from marine collagen over any cow or chicken.
And that's, that's been the aha moment you gave me, because I was leaning more towards what Louise Hay did. She made it tonight, you know, that's pretty solid.
She looked good. Turning it into a powder, I think, is a little bit different than like making it yourself. Yeah, you know what I mean? Like, I, I don't make fish bone broth for myself at home because it doesn't last very long, because I don't—
I'm—
fish freaks me out more than fresh.
Like, I need totally—
well, because of the chicken and And beef bones, like, I'm—
I use— it's called A Kettle and Fire. Yeah, it's super really yummy. It kind of has a cool name, like your, your CPD line, you know, your whole— it's Kettle and Fire. Sounds chic, right? And I love it. And they come— I'll show it to you— in these little box containers. It's very earth-friendly. And I just heat it up. And that, for me, guys, I will have a brain— you know, this brain food kind of meal I'll create. I mean, it's so easy to take a broth, warm it up. I'll put chopped veggies like a crudité vegetables from Trader Joe's if you want to save money, already pre-chopped. Put some onions, garlic, put 3 to 4 tablespoons of avocado oil. Maybe I'm doing a little walnut oil now. Salt and pepper. I love my Himalayan sea salt. And you're done in like 5, 6 minutes, and I don't overcook it.
Have you tried Celtic salt yet?
No.
That's the best.
Really? What color is it? White?
It's a gray color because it has the most minerals out of any salt that you can heat.
Yes, I have a new salt.
C-E-L-T-I-C. C-E? Yeah, it's Celtic. It doesn't sound—
Is that the brand or is that just the generic?
It's the generic, but someone made a brand out of it.
Really? Celtic salt? And it's gray? Yeah, gray salt. Well, and it's got high minerals, magnesium, potassium, and all?
Very high. So it looks like that. Oh wow. C-E-L-T-I-C. Celtic sea salt.
Celtic. You want me to take a picture?
We'll share it with you guys. This is— I love it.
For everyone that's not on your phone here with us, C-E-L-T-I-C.
And Whole Foods sells it. Everyone sells it.
It's like $2.49.
Yeah. And it's by far some of the best. Like, you— if it's so interesting when you see how it's actually like where they get it from.
Yeah.
What happens is it's like a cross between ocean and something, and it compiles into these piles. Like, the minerals force these piles of salt. It's the most interesting thing ever.
Wow.
Yeah, it's—
I mean, I'm obsessed with salt. I really— I think my kids now make fun of me, Parker and Owen. They're like, Dad, they bought me for Father's Day a sea salt container. It says salt. That's wood that you can put, refill with salt. And they're just always getting me salts. They know, like, get that salt for Christmas, his birthday. And I'm like all about it. Bring me the salt. Dr. Joffrey got me hooked on— have you tried, um, the— is it red Redmond's salt from Utah, the pink salt. I'll hook you up with some. I have tons.
Yeah, I used to, I used to have that, use that stuff all the time.
Yeah, and it's pink.
I love Celtic salt.
Oh wow, I got to share that picture. Let me take a pic. You guys will have to get the newsletter to see all the pictures of everything that we're sharing, but that is gorgeous.
Isn't that gorgeous?
Yeah, it's just so pretty. And we think salt is bad, it's gonna give us a heart attack, right? High blood pressure. And it's one of the keys to turning off false hunger because so many times I'll just end with this. I've learned this from years, but the word salt in its Latin prefix was— it came from originally from salary. Salt, because people, the Romans, were paid— and you've heard this phrase of being worth your weight in salt or gold and all that. Well, salt was like gold. It was very priceless because it was a tool that warriors would use to go out and have energy and win battles and win empires. And if— and it's really like a healthy Gatorade because because you really— the right amount of sea salt gives you the electrolytes, the magnesium, the potassium, all that you need to have energy, so you're not hungry.
By the way, I was, I was, um, you know, every year Ryan and I go at the end of our summer of August, we go to a detox spa of some sort.
Oh, you do?
Oh, so the more hardcore the better. So we've tried— you do after summer, like, you drink every day, you're eating all kinds of things. Like, we don't really have— we're not those people that skinny during summer. Like, I don't know how people stay skinny during summer. I get— I turn into the fattest. No, you do not.
I swear.
I gain like 8 pounds during summer. Please, I swear. Um, anyway, but, uh, because I go—
you—
I spend a lot of time in Europe in summer, so it's just like pasta.
I have a feeling I'm coming this summer to Italy. Are you going to be in Italy this summer?
Probably. Um, we're doing a mix. We're doing Greece, we're doing—
yeah, I've done, uh, Montenegro, I've done Athens, uh, Italy.
Do you—
have you been to Montenegro?
Uh, no, but we're doing that. Look, yeah, we're doing like Croatia, Montenegro.
Oh yeah, it looks like Sicily. It's like Sleeping Beauty or Beauty and the Beast.
That's what it looks like, for real.
Like when I saw Montenegro, I was like, this is where they shot Beauty and the Beast. It's so— that's right, that's so quaint. It looks like Walt Disney created the city and it's not. But, uh, enough of that, guys. Hey, so go out there, guys, get some healthy salts, get some healthy fats, get some collagen.
