3 Feb 2020 · 29 min
Michael May, president of SweetLeaf, discusses how his father discovered stevia in Paraguay in 1982 and built the company from a garage to 40 employees selling in 35-40 countries. Stevia has zero calories, doesn't spike insulin, and works for fasting. SweetLeaf makes liquid drops, flavored water enhancers, and a 1-to-1 granular sweetener for baking.

My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. Hey everyone, it's Jorge Cruise. Welcome to the podcast. Um, it is exciting because today on this Monday, I'm so excited. It's the first Monday of February, which I just don't even know where January went. I can't believe it's 2020 already. But you know, every Monday I tend to have a guest co-host, and I have to tell you, I'm so honored today because, um, I'm sitting with a man that has a legacy, his family, his father in particular, created kind of a stir almost 40 years ago, and his name is Michael May, and he's the man in charge of this company that I've fallen in love with because they really have brought the sweet dreams to all my celebrity clients. I've had everyone from Dorinda Medley to Sonya, I mean, all my celebrities use your products, Michael. So, and if you like stevia, at least you know how much I love stevia and monk fruit and all these other natural plant-based sweeteners. They're critical for making the diet taste good, I think, and just to enjoy life again. But first, Michael, thank you for joining me as my guest co-host here on the podcast.
Thank you. Well, thank you for having me. It's really wonderful to be here.
Oh yeah, no, well, thank you. And I thought if you wanted to start off with this, because I was reading these incredible articles about how your dad, who, I mean, they call him the father of Stevia. Is that right?
Right.
What was that like? Was it almost 40 or 38 years ago, right? Or so?
1982. So yeah, right around 38 years ago.
Wow. So for everyone listening, you know, that loves sweet anything, I mean, you know, I use your sweetener for everything and coffee and tea and my flat meals, you know, these flat belly meals we do for my celebrities with chia seeds or the smoothies. I mean, I go to you for everything. How did this start? I mean, we had been talking before we went on air here about your humble beginnings as a 9-year-old, right, with your dad helping him. I mean, you got to work early, right? But tell everyone a little bit of the the history of what you're— and then tell them about your dad. And I mean, you have an official title, but give them a little bit about what you do and then your father and tell a little bit of the story, if you would.
Sure. I'm the president of the company. I know it's a family company, family-owned and operated.
The May family, right?
And, you know, that's really how it started out. Yeah. Is, you know, my father was a well-respected executive of a different company in the '70s, and he was in Paraguay.
Paraguay.
South America. Yes. And that's where stevia comes from. That's where it's native to Paraguay. It's used for hundreds of years by the Guarani Indians in Paraguay. And he was given a leaf from a Peace Corps worker who had also been a contact with him. And first put it in his mouth and he knew this was the future. Whoa.
And what year about was this, would you guess?
This is about 1982. Wow.
See, he was really the innovator in this area.
He was. And, you know, and he, his entire life in the 4 decades or so since then, he was introduced around the world as the father of stevia. Wow. And not just in the United States, really everywhere he went. Yeah. And so when I say it's a family-owned and operated kind of business, it really was when I was young too.
Yeah.
You know, my brothers and sisters and I, we would, my father left his job to start this one. We would load up products in his van. He would go off for 2 weeks and sell store to store.
Wow. And you guys would help all the—
We did. We loaded it up. We kept some products. Our warehouse was our garage in the early days. Wow.
You're like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Literally, all these big companies start in a garage, right? And yours really did.
It really did. Wow.
So that was the first office was your home.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Wow.
Well, you've come a long way. How many folks do you have now working with you? Because this is a huge office. Operation, I think, because it's global, right?
So here we, here we have 40. Yeah, but we use a lot of different partners, and, and it— we do have a global, a global operation. We export around the world. Yeah, um, we sell to probably around 35, 40 countries right now. Wow. Sometimes I keep forgetting the EU is not one country. Yeah, so I got, I got to count all those too. But we sell throughout the EU and, and different South America, Asia.
Incredible. —And then tell me, so your father, he— when you were like 9, he comes home and he has this plant. What did he tell the family? And then obviously, how did this impact you growing up? Because right now, I mean, this company is literally changing, in my opinion, how people are getting healthy. And he had a vision. I think you were sharing that, sharing that with me. But what was his vision? And what— how did you see that as a kid? And now, like, how do you How do you communicate that?
Yeah. So let me tell you the personal one. Yeah. And then I wanna tell you about his vision for everyone. Please, tell me. Yeah. You know, when I was a kid, my father could do no wrong. He was my dad and he was the best. And so he came home with a sack full of dried stevia leaves. He tells me— Wow. This is great. This is 30 times sweeter than sugar. This is wonderful. It's no calories. You know, try it. It's the best.
You loved it? Yeah.
Oh, yeah, absolutely. You know, my mother was the one who had to work out, okay, how are we going to do this? My father now is going to start a new company. She was the anchor.
She brought reality to the business.
She and he probably had a lot of different discussions than I did with my father. Well, sure. Okay.
Well, you were 9 years old, right? I was.
I was, I was young. And, and, uh, um, and so that's— so for me, yeah, this, this was, this was gonna this was going to be it. This was going to change the world. Yeah. And, and really what he wanted to do, coming from, coming from an industry where he worked a lot with dialysis centers— wow— he would, he would see—
now, what was his background prior to this? Share with everyone if you can.
So he was, he was in a— he was a senior vice president executive of a company, with a company that worked with dialysis centers. Before that, he had done some worked on the business side with, with the AMA, American Medical Association. He had— he was always on the business side, uh, but he, he was always working with the medical industry. Okay, anyway, so, so he, he told me once because I asked him about, you know, why he, you know, he's so passionate. He was always so passionate about everything, everything he did. And, you know, he knew he was doing something good with the dialysis and, and giving people who had problems with their kidneys that that longer lasting life, but he saw them connected to that all day. And it wasn't, he needed, he wanted to do something that really improved someone's life. That you didn't— Significantly. You didn't get just longer life, you got better quality life. I love that. You got really improvement over life and you were happy. That's been my mission too. You had joy.
Yeah, so we were aligned. I feel like reading about your dad, we were like kindred spirits in a different way because He really felt that, right? And that's why he did this, right? He did.
It would be hard to find someone more passionate than him. My mom's really close though. She is.
We're gonna have her join us next week on the podcast. And she seems like such a, I mean, she saw it all. All right, guys, let's get back to the show.
She did. She's there all along.
And I love, uh, companies that have women that really have been influential. Influential because I feel like a lot of my clients are women. No disrespect to the gentlemen out there, but you know, they seem to not care as much of their health. And hopefully that's changing because it can't be just women. But they say women buy everything for the family, so what a great place to— it's great that you have your mom's input on stuff, you know, because she knows the marketplace and that from being a woman, I guess. But so, but continue. So take us then, how from then to where you came in, because you weren't always running the shop, right?
No, I wasn't. So, so I mean, my My personal involvement now, when I was young, I always worked with my dad in the company. Sure, sure. In high school, I worked in the warehouse. Oh, wow. I did a lot of stuff with the warehouse. I did a lot of— I did stuff with production in our company when I was in high school. I went off to college. I did some sales. I went store to store and did some sales representation. Wow. But I eventually pursued some other interests and I went and I taught military strategy. Amazing. Yeah. Wow. And I went and did that. And then in 2013, I came back. My father and mother had been talking to me about that for a while, and I decided to come back. I grew up with the company. I never left it. I use it every day. Totally.
And with your family, you have kids and all that, so— Yes, yes, they all— The next generation is coming.
They all use it, and they all have, you know, if you asked them which one of the products, which one of the types of Stevia we have, which one of the different things we have that's their favorite, they all have a different answer. Yeah, yeah, it's all a different answer.
Everyone does. We all have different tastes, right? Literally. Because you guys have— not to brag— how many— because I remember, uh, working with Steve Harvey. He was obsessed with your drops. I mean, your celebrities are out there using this stuff. And I've introduced it to the ones I've worked with that are newer. But there's everything from— I mean, tease us with some of the, the, the flavors you have, because it's some good stuff.
Yeah, we have everything from from the vanilla cream. Love vanilla. Vanilla, everyone loves vanilla. It's like number one, yeah. All the way down to chocolate raspberry, to— Ooh, that sounds yummy. Root beer.
And I use this, Michael, as you know, in my flat belly meals I make for my celebrities. I make these meals and I use your drops, 'cause it adds no calories, doesn't raise insulin, and it tastes, I mean, I wanna brag for a minute, you know, and just give my personal endorsement that this stuff tastes like the real thing. I don't know how you do it, but somehow you do it. And no calories? I mean, you've never had a calorie in any one of these bottles, right? No. I mean, it's literally calorie-free. And I mean, take us now to today. Like, where are things now? 2020, it sounds like we should all be driving around in spaceships, but— Right. Well, I mean, we're not. I don't think, unless you have one. I don't have one, but—
I think we have hoverboards. There we go. That's what they tell me.
Wow, okay, I want one of those. But what do you see right now, because The growth, the sweet growth is still happening, and I feel like if anything, you know from my perspective as someone who writes books on this, I mean, we've never been more unhealthy as a world, the Western world, which is sad because I've been in this for 25 years, and I feel like all the work I've done and all the 30-plus books I've written, and look at what you and your father have done for 38 now, almost 40 years, and we should have all made a big dent in the right direction. It's just getting more obesity, more of an epidemic. They say my kids, and you have kids, teenagers as well. Yeah, I do. They're the first generation to have a lower mortality rate than the prior generation, which is so sad that these kids are like just getting overweight. And I feel like these products— I mean, I did something years ago with President Bill Clinton when he was retired to help with obesity in kids, getting the sodas out. But you know, I, I feel like these products, you— whether you're making a sweet lemonade, old-fashioned lemonade, or a root beer, or whatever, or strawberry chocolate, you know, kind of dessert you can get that indulgence, right, right, without the sugar. And I think that it doesn't break a fast. So for me, you know how much I love fasting. I feel like— how did you know to go in this direction? And what's, what's stirring right now for 2020? Or what are— or is it still the same vision? Or what's— tell us what's going on this year, because I feel like anyone listening wants to know how to, how to keep the— you know, how— what's happening. And obviously it's a great place to be because more and more people need this.
You know, right. And as far as our vision and mission, our reason for being, yeah, really has to do with, with we want to give people a choice. So, so, so what I kind of see sometimes in the market is, is, is people have a choice. You know, they're buying this product. It tastes great. It's just not good for them. It causes all kinds of problems. It could spike. I mean, it can do all kinds of things.
Artificial sweeteners, even though no calories, it could be full of sugar.
It could have all kinds of different types of problems. Totally, totally. What we want to do is ensure that we give people a choice to make a healthy— they can make a healthy choice. They can, they can make a choice for a better-for-you life, for a higher quality life. They can make a choice. And, and so what drives us is how we get one, how we make the best products that are going to deliver the most premium quality, that are going to deliver the best taste, that are going to deliver what what, what the consumers really want. Yeah. And then get it out there for them so they can have a choice. Even, even if we have the best, even if we have the best stuff, and, and, you know, anyone can decide what's the best. But if, but if we say we have the best stuff, well, how can I get it to you? I want you to make a choice. I want you to decide yourself. You, you make the decision. Absolutely. Healthy products have to be out there in order for them to do it.
No, it's, it's so important. And I feel like what you guys have mastered. And this is why I wanted to sit and talk with you, because I don't talk to a lot of business people, but I feel like you're not a businessman as much as you are really a solutions man, you know, giving the world a way to, to not feel guilty, remove the shame of, you know, hey, I like strawberry cheesecake, or I like chocolate this, or I like, you know, grape juice, or I like— I mean, just so many things that we all love growing up, and then, you know, we think it's always going to be bad for our waistlines, was full of sugar. And we know sugar causes aging, breaks a fast. And then the artificials, I mean, they all cause— they're neurotoxins. And I've talked about the red, the blue, the yellow packets. I tell my celebrity clients, everyone, to avoid, avoid, avoid, avoid. I mean, if you have to, I guess, but rather have real sugar. But you know, it's inflammatory. And you know, I'm getting closer to 50. I'm gonna be 49 next month, which scares me. But you know how 2020 happened. But I want— I'm taking care of my health first for myself, for my clients, for my family, my kids. And I feel like you guys have done it. You have created a company better than Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory because I feel like you have as many varieties of these options that you can add to— I mean, give an idea. Like, typically people use— you have different types of products. Tell them that you have the ones in the bottles and then one in the, in the glass bottles, just to say, and then the other ones that are more in the soft squeeze bottles, the squeezable, and you have powders for baking. But tell them, like, how do clients use it? Because imagine someone's listening right now and they're like, all right, I kind of want to try this First of all, I also want to say this: it's not bitter. There's a lot of people think stevia can be bitter. Sure. And I guess there are brands that are out there that can be, but people that buy certain drops will put it in coffees and teas, correct? What do you call those? Those are the ones in the glass, right? The—
yeah, the, the glass, the dropper bottles. Dropper bottles. Yeah, it's a concentrate. There's 288 servings of that and 50 in the smaller bottle. So it's incredible. So it's a concentrate. Yeah, so that lasts you— I mean, I hope for a whole month at at least, right? It lasts a long time. 200 how many servings?
288. 288 in one bottle. So talk about a good cost per use there. And then that's in beverages. I mean, I've used them for Steve Harvey, for example, in his lattes, you know, to make it just taste good and let alone sweet like liquid sugar. I mean, these things mimic caramel. I mean, you mimic chocolate, you mimic vanilla cream. The Irish, what's the Irish one I like? The new one? English toffee.
English toffee. Yes, English toffee.
Oh my gosh, I'm getting hungry right now, but thirsty, you know, because you can put it in drinks. And then, and I use them in these, these flat belly meals that I make for my clients. You can put them in with chia seeds, you can put them in with whatever. And then tell us about these new beautiful, more squeezy bottles that are more for water. They're called Drops, or how—
tell us about those. So we have water. Yes, we have, we have water enhancers. They're called water— we just label them Water Drops. Water Drops. Yeah. Oh, that's great. And there's different types of flavors. There's a raspberry lemonade, there's a strawberry, kiwi. My personal favorite is Tropical Punch. I love punch.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I like. I grew up on Kool-Aid, so yeah, and Twinkies. I mean, I don't want to admit, but you even had Captain Crunch cereal, you know, with real milk, and it's all sugar, and I wondered why I was chubby, you know. But whatever, now we know better, so we do better. And I feel like, I mean, that's incredible. And now you've guys gotten into baking, is that right? We do, yeah. So Better Than Sugar, or tell us about this baking world you're in now.
So, so we have a, we have a new line of, of product. It's a granular sweetener, but it's 1 to 1. Wow. So it measures just like sugar. Yeah. In baking, it looks like sugar, it tastes like sugar, but there's zero sugar, zero calories.
You're my kind of— you're kind of my kind of guy.
Very clean. Yeah, very clean taste, I think. And we're really— we're really trying to innovate and bring people— when we go back to choice, bring people stuff where they go, okay, I don't have to make a sacrifice. I don't have to change up my recipe. I can just use this one the way I would use sugar. 100%. But eliminate the sugar. I don't have to make a sacrifice in taste. So we offer different types of flavors. Yep, yep.
Well, I mean, I can tell your passion for this comes from everything you've done since the age of 9, I guess. And I can't thank you enough for what you've done with your family and all that. And I feel like your mom, she's going to join me next week. And I'm so honored to talk to your mom because She was at your dad's side when they built this thing from the ground up, you know, and I feel like, uh, I don't talk to enough women, it seems, you know, about health, and she's such a pioneer in that. I think they call around your office the Queen of Sweet, right? So, so I love that name. It's, you know, hey, I, I, I'm the King of Sweet. I, I love sweetness. I have a big sweet tooth, and that's why I'm sitting here with you, because I want to share with everyone listening— here's my intention, guys— that you try stevia. And, you know, and there's a lot of other options out there, but Stevia is something the ancients have used. I feel like it's like fasting, it's like yoga, it's like all the things I love. None of it's new. I mean, how many years ago were they using stevia? Do you know? Did your dad ever share with you? I mean, is this thousands of years or hundreds of years ago?
At least a thousand or more. More? The Guarani Indians have this entire legend about how they got it. And it's been around for hundreds of years that we know of. In fact, The Spanish scientist that first kind of started working with it was in the 1500s.
Whoa, I mean, so it's been time-tested. This isn't something that, oh, it's gonna give us cancer. Like these people that are all vaping now, I mean, they did it for a few years and now everyone's, they don't even get cancer, they just die. They don't have time for cancer. I mean, so I like things that have been tested. The longer the better. And this is an ancient superfood, really is. And you know, it's perfect for what we do, guys. If you're a cruiser, you know about our flat belly meals from the club at jorgecruise.com. And, you know, I feel like it can work with anything though. You can use this for everything. And now with baking, I mean, it's such an innovation. I think it's so powerful. And, you know, I feel like, um, you know, your team has been so wonderful. I've been kind of sharing the gift of sweet, your sweetness, with a lot of my celebrities. And if I may, I'm going to share with everyone listening, I have 10 giveaways we're going to give away because your team sent me these beautiful boxes, kind of VIP care packages And for anyone listening that wants to receive the gift of health, that's super sweet, especially if you have a sweet tooth. So if you're like me, email me at hello@jorgecruise.com. I do this often. Not too many sweet giveaways, but this is truly the sweetest giveaway. Yeah, and then let me know why you want to do this stuff, guys. And if you've done the 19-day weight loss plan that was in Prevention magazine last month, tell me if you did well with that. If you've been using stevia before but you're worried about bitterness, tell me what brands. And I'm going to select 10 people that want to really have this, these options, because I feel like I talked to your mom and there's some teas she introduced me to which I've fallen in love with, like the hibiscus one with yerba mate. Is that right? And it's so sweet because it has stevia in it, and it's— you just steep it with hot water. So I'm going to put that in there. We're going to put an instant tea in there. We're going to put your top sellers, is like a cream, uh, was it the, the— what's the vanilla?
Yeah, the vanilla cream.
Yep. And then the toffee one. I love toffee. Who doesn't love toffee? So this sounds good. And zero calories, zero sugar, zero any worries. There's— it's guilt-free, it's pure health, it's a superfood. And so if you're interested, guys, shoot me an email. If you're listening, obviously the quicker you email me, the faster. And include a photo if you would, if yourself, and your story, and I'll share that with you too. I'll see what people say. But I bet, I mean, let's end on this. Share a story, maybe one or two, or just one good one, a meaningful one of— I'm sure you've met people, you go to these expos and they come up to you and they're like, oh my God, you know, my health, I was this and now I'm happy again. I mean, do you— you probably get emails of people's, you know, you read stories of people on your social. And, and what is your social? Tell everyone where they can find the Sweet Leaf on social media and websites and all that. What's that? And then tell us a story if you'd end with that.
So our website is sweetleaf.com. Easy. We have Facebook page also. We're out there on Instagram. Oh yeah. And so you can connect with us. Perfect. In many different ways. You know, what's really interesting is what— growing up, yeah, I would go to these trade shows with my father.
You would? Oh yeah. What was your first one? Do you remember? Were you like 10 or 11? No, it was in—
yeah, it was like in the '80s. Wow. So, so, but, but I, you know, and every time I would go with him to these trade shows, people would come up to him. They would seek him out and tell him— because his name was Jim May— Jim May, you changed my life. Wow. And they would, they would come up and they would say this over and over again, you know. I mean, I'm okay, I'm the son, but they wanted to go find him and tell him. And people would— they would— it would, um, it would be amazing. People who, um, who, who lost weight, people who felt for the first life that they were getting healthy. They were drinking some of the teas, they were using the stevia, they were doing different things, they were changing their life and they were feeling better about life. They were gaining confidence. They were really becoming the best of themselves, who they wanted to be. I love it. And so if we can be a tool for that, for someone to become the best that they want to be.
Oh, I love that.
Or the best of whatever image they want to aspire to. Yeah, of course. And let's be that tool. Let's be, you know, let's be the means to help someone really go out and get a goal.
I love that. I mean, that's why I do what I do. And, you know, I get emails too. And obviously, you know, I think that's the fuel that keeps me going. And, you know, I mean, your products— not to brag, but they're global. And you guys are really, in whatever forms— my favorite are the liquid drops— the number one, the leader in the world on this. Yes, and I feel like— top-selling liquid. Yeah. That, I mean, that's a huge accomplishment. People think you're probably an overnight success, but obviously your dad did this back in the '80s, so.
Well, there were, you know, and there were struggles in the beginning simply because Stevia wasn't approved as a sweetener yet. Wow. So there was, so my father worked with it, worked with it. We were the first company to be approved as a sweetener. Wow, see what you accomplished. But it was, there was a lot of work with it. That's part of the reason while we— he also started bringing the teas from South America because, you know, you got to make— yeah, you got to support a family. We're all, we're all little, you know, we were all still in grade school or high school back then. And, and so my father brought these things in, but he always knew, he always knew that, that the goal, what was going to change the world, was the stevia because it's zero calorie sweetener that can really bring health. So, so universal.
I mean, for beverages, food, desserts. I mean, he was right. So thank you, uh, your dad Jim May out there. I'm sure he's listening, so shout out to him and his incredible work. And one more time, end them— end with your website so everyone can go check it out. And then guys, email me at hello@jorgecruise.com if you're going to be one of the 10 winners. Uh, write me a little email, tell me what's up, what you heard on the podcast. Give us 5 stars please on the podcast. This has been the best co-host ever because I feel like you really, you get me. You know how much I love sweets, and I'll tell you, you've done such an incredible thing to carry your father's legacy. I mean, it's a big legacy, and you're doing a great job, and I just can't wait to see what else comes out this year, and I feel like more to come, right?
Oh, absolutely, absolutely. We're gonna keep in this year, next year, year after, we're gonna keep bringing more products, giving everyone more choice, and really trying to to change lives. That's what we're about. The website is sweetleaf.com. Come check us out. Talk to us. Let's connect on social media. Let's, you know. And you got ideas for products? We're in. Give us ideas. Let's do it, guys.
I love it. All right, well, you're changing the world every sweet tooth at a time. And I think we all have them. That's why we have this issue. But let's solve it with something better than sugar. And better in every way, better. And it doesn't break your fast, guys, so it's cruise control approved. And for all you people that feel like you can't do this without it, no more guilt. We all get to relax, take a breath, and feel, I mean, when that guilt is gone, you have freedom, you know? And I think you give people the freedom to be happy and to enjoy life again. So let's go out there, let's enjoy it, guys. Pick up this stuff, it's everywhere. I mean, literally, give them where they can get it in the US, everywhere. It's like from all the stores, right? It's everywhere, online, Amazon.
Yeah, it's at any Publix, Amazon. You should be able to find this out there at a grocery store, natural store.
Yep, and look them up. You probably have a locator on your website.
We do, we have a locator. You can go right on there, it will take you right to the store. There you go, guys.
All right, well, locate this stuff. It's delicious, you're gonna love it, I promise. Give you my word on it, guys. Have a beautiful rest of your day. Thank you, Michael, for your help and for— Thank you. Joining me as my co-host here. My tip to everyone listening, guys, is, you know, don't give up on the sweetness. You can be sweet without the sugar, but use stevia. I think it's changed the world so far, and hopefully it'll change your waistline, guys, and it'll help you fast better and help you enjoy your coffee better, your teas, your desserts, everything. So go out there and try it, guys. Let us know what you think. Give us 5 stars on the podcast, guys, and I'll see you next week where your mom is going to join us. I'm so— what do you want to— anything you want to share with everyone about your mom? She's an amazing— Carol. Carol May. She, I mean, lots to come, but she really saw this from the ground up. And she did. I mean, I feel like I'm honored to have her on.
She's very, very passionate about replacing sugar. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, that's, that's her mission, is replace sugar. My kind of girl. I love that.
I'm with it. With something better. Yeah, absolutely. Not with just water. Yeah, we got it. You got to stay sweet but without the sugars, I say. So thank you so much, Michael. And guys, thank you for listening. Peace and purpose. Alright guys, we'll talk soon. See you next week. Bye everyone. Well, I really do hope you enjoyed the podcast today.
