#23 - How Ibuprofen Can Backfire on You
24 Feb 2020 · 23 min
Dr. Darryl Joffrey explains why NSAIDs mask pain instead of fixing it, often causing leaky gut and organ damage. NSAIDs rank as the 16th leading cause of death in the US. The real fix: magnesium through leafy greens and Epsom salts, plus checking PLU codes on produce where 9 means organic and 8 means GMO.

Hey everyone, welcome to the podcast. I'm so excited on this Monday. I've got a special guest co-host. You guys remember him, Dr. Darrell.
He is the best.
We're on Park Avenue at his office and it's a gorgeous day in New York. I mean, it's always pretty in New York, I think. And today we're gonna be talking about something that's dear to my heart and I feel so lucky that he's kind of a, an expert in this area because he obviously deals with people that suffer with pain and sometimes it's back pain. Sometimes it's, you know, having to do with the skeletal system, but sometimes it can be even leaky gut, and he's the expert. You guys know Dr. Darrell. He's a dear friend of mine. I consider him my brother in health, so he's going to be joining us the next couple of weeks here on the podcast, and he's also dear friends with my dear girlfriend Shayna, and you guys know Shayna, and she was actually in your office just last week, I think, right?
2 days ago, she was.
Yeah, yeah, so she's amazing, so please welcome to the podcast Dr. Darrell. Say hi to everyone.
Hey everybody, great to be here, Jorge. Always a pleasure to be with you and your incredible audience, and these are exciting things to do, Gotta get the message out there and empower people to live healthier and do it by putting the right things in their body.
Always, always, and we've got some good shortcuts because for me, this is so dear to my heart, ibuprofen. You guys know what that is. I mean, there's a lot of brands for it, but ibuprofen, a lot of us take it in midlife when we have pain and whether it's, I mean, what do you typically hear people taking it for? For achy joints. I know my mom 20 years ago passed and she kind of overused it and hurt her kidneys and she passed from toxemia, because her kidneys broke down and she had to go on dialysis. And the doctors told her that, oh my gosh, you took too much ibuprofen and not enough hydration and water to dilute it. But you were telling me, we were talking before the podcast, that this is, I mean, it can be even more severe than that. But tell people, remind them what you do a little bit, because now you're gonna be on the show for a couple weeks here and I'm so excited. But you're kind of an expert when it comes to overcoming pain through really innovative ways. And, but, Tell them a little bit of your background with pain and all that, and your clients when you're here in New York, I mean, they come to you kind of aching, and I don't know if you recommend ibuprofen, maybe on a rare occasion. I mean, it's not a horrible thing to use on occasion, but take it away, Dr. Tom.
You have to understand why you're using it and understand what it's doing, and I think the biggest misconception is that so many people think it's fixing a problem, because listen, Jorge, we all know drugs are powerful. Drugs work. When I say they work, they help people address symptoms, but the big issue with these drugs and all drugs is that it doesn't go upstream and it's not addressing the true cause. I like that. So it's okay for people to do these things from time to time, but they have to understand that it's very toxic. Ibuprofen, Advil, whatever, they're all kind of the same. They're NSAIDs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. Tylenol's a little different, 'cause Tylenol is just for pain relief.
That's true.
But these other two, Aleve, in that category as well, address the inflammation as well. But the problem is they're NSAIDs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. It's the 16th leading cause of death in our country.
Wait, say that one more time. So the 16th cause of death in the US is?
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. So things like ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve. And it's a problem. So to answer your question, I've been in practice as a chiropractor for the last, ooh, 20 years now. And in that time, I've adjusted and seen seen over 120,000 patient visits.
Amazing.
And people come to us with all different sorts of aches and pains and cricks and strains, from general joint pain to severe pain where they can't move. Yeah. But as I kind of evolved into more of this nutritional aspect of my practice, we're starting to see these organic problems. We're seeing inflammation driving up all these health issues in the body, from leaky gut, which is I think the cause of all dis-ease in the body.
Yeah.
So we have to look at the gut and what that causes in the body, whether it's organ issues, lymphatic issues, connective tissue issues. So the problem is, is that people are masking the problem. It's making them more toxic, and it's not addressing the true cause. So we got to get down deeper, find out why they're in pain. Yeah, why do they come to us?
Now I'm just going to break it down in my head here. I'm thinking, I'm thinking my mom, you know, she passed at 64. She was in her 60s. No, it was many years ago, over 20 years ago. And she was a dancer, did a lot of movement, loved her life when she was in her 20s and 30s, and then my sister and I came along. And then by the time she was in her early 60s, she had a hip issue and she didn't want to go see a doctor and didn't want to get a hip replacement. So these magic pills— Tylenol— or not Tylenol, uh, the ibuprofen, right, uh, is what she used. And it caused this lining damage in her kidneys and she passed within a year or so. But typically, I would imagine anyone out there is using ibuprofen because they're, you know, they're weekend athletes or whatever, and they have a little 'cause they have this ache in their this or that. And so, not that that's bad to remove the pain, but talk to us about a way that we could maybe swap this out or use it less, because I feel like if we've got issues with the bones or we've got issues in our body or a headache or, I mean, 'cause people take it too for headaches, right? I mean, for everything.
People take it for everything. Headaches is the number one reason why people consult me in my office. I'm gonna tell you from my own personal story. Tell us, yeah. Before I became involved in health, I was playing soccer in college at Boston College, and I would get every injury. In, in the book. I broke my neck my freshman year in college. Um, I had every type of fracture you can imagine, and I was popping these pills like you can't imagine.
You were in your 20s.
Yeah. And here's the thing, one of those days, one of them popped open in my mouth.
What?
And I don't recommend anybody try this at home, please do not do this, but when you—
when that thing opens in your mouth, you feel how toxic and acidic and how it erodes. It literally—
I felt like it—
I felt like it was gonna burn like a hole through my mouth. And that's exactly what it does when you digest it. So you put it in thinking it's this innocent, sweet little round pill, but it's literally eating you up from the inside out.
So on the inside, it's like, it's pure acid.
It's pure acid.
Go ahead.
It's causing ulcers in your stomach, and this is what causes the issue.
So that's the side effect. Obviously removes the headache. I mean, does it work for you? I mean, obviously we keep using it, because it does remove the pain. So if the pain is there, what is, so give us your thinking on this, how do we, reverse engineer this so we don't have to use this maybe as much, or better yet, find an alternative, or just address the pain.
Yeah, exactly. We got to address the cause. And I, I don't even call them side effects, I call them non-desired effects, because that's true.
Because that's really— that again, that's deep.
They're not side effects, they're non-desired effects. And there's plenty. And I mean, I love these commercials, Jorge, when these drugs come on and, you know, they show the happy family, you know, playing and yada yada, and then they show like 30 to 45 minutes of all the non-desired effects. So take this drug for depression, but the alternative is you can kill yourself.
Yes, suicide, and this and that, and ulcers, and you can get all these issues.
And here's the thing, it's— this is not about bashing medicine because medicine has saved both of our parents' lives many times over. For sure, it's helped me. But we have to understand there's a time and place. It's crisis care.
Hi, this is Jorge Cruise Cruise, and I wanted to interrupt the show just for a minute because I want to make sure that you're on my VIP mailing list for future podcasts and for insights and shortcuts on how to improve your health, from everything on intermittent fasting to yoga to 8-minute workouts to how to just work better and how to have less stress and also how to manage pain. I mean, you name it, all my best shortcuts come out every Monday and it's totally free. You heard it right. So I'm going to encourage you right now to take a second and jump onto your laptop and go to jorgecruise.com, or you can do it on your mobile device, obviously, and sign up for the Jorge Cruise Report, and it's totally free. Tell your loved ones about it, join it. It's over a quarter of a million people that are getting this email, and it's going out every Monday, and I want you to be a part of it so you know what's coming up next every week.
All right, guys, let's get back to the show.
But we gotta get out of this allopathic mindset of a pill for every ill. It's not addressing cause, it's making you worse, and the worst part If there's a fire in my apartment, Jorge, what these ibuprofen drugs are doing, and drugs like that, is they're snipping the wire to the alarm.
So now we've removed the signal that your body is trying to tell you to do what? There's a problem. You know, if there's a toothache, you gotta get this thing fixed, right? 100%, yeah. So it's basically stopping that signal. So now we're not aware of the problem. And what happens to the problem? The fire is gonna take you out 100%.
And it makes it worse.
So then they stop taking the drug, and what do they say?
It came back.
It didn't come back.
It never went away. You just removed the signal. So again, to your point, Jorge, we gotta find where is this coming from, what's the true cause.
And once we know what that true cause is, we can actually do something to fix it so we don't need the drugs, we don't need to rely on the drugs.
So, all right, so if someone's listening right now, they use this, they're using it— again, give them the ideas. Like, they're probably using it— what are the brands that— just to remind them—
ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, top 3 big ones.
All right, so You're doing one of those three, guys, and you have some sort of, I'm assuming, pain, some sort of inflammation, because pain is inflammation to most, to the highest degree, right?
100%.
What can someone do right now, today, listening to this on this Monday, so this week for them begins a new beginning? Tell them, give them a prescription of sort of, doctor.
Great point.
We gotta—
Be the doctor.
Tell us what to do.
We need to downregulate inflammation, and there's a few—
Say that again, I like that.
We need to downregulate inflammation.
Now what does that mean for the average person?
We need to—
That's very fancy.
We need to lower, we need to drive down, we need to reduce this inflammatory onslaught to the body. We gotta put out the fire.
Okay, I'm all on that. Who's, yeah, we're all on board. So how do we turn off the pain, the inflammation? And it could be a headache, it could be a joint pain, I mean, it could be any kind of inflammation.
Cardiovascular, heart, doesn't matter what it is, number one, we got to get the minerals back into the body.
All right, yeah, give us the top three things. So minerals, number one, right?
Always.
Number one, biggest mineral deficiency is magnesium.
We just don't get enough.
I interviewed Dr. Caroline Dean, for the Sugar Summit, which you are a featured expert in.
Yes, it's coming in less than a month. We're going to remind everyone to tune in on March 23rd.
Yeah, March 23rd.
We'll mention all that at the end here.
And what she talks about— Minerals, magnesium. And she talks about how magnesium has become one of the biggest deficiencies, not just because of sugar, and sugar is a massive, eats up just the magnesium in the body, but it's also because of the soil. Our soil is massively depleted because of all these different types of—
Yeah.
That's a whole nother conversation.
And there's no magnesium in the food we eat as much. And not that we eat a lot of vegetables, but that's where they used to be, right?—
Yeah, I mean, they've done research showing that right now if you ate spinach, you'd have to eat 70 times, 70 more cups of spinach today to give you the same amount of mineral content that one serving gave you in 1948, especially iron. So it's a big one. So we got to get the minerals into the body, number one.
And if you're feeling aches and strains, if your muscles are aching, if you have fibromyalgia, so the doctor says, "Doc, I have pain in all these muscles." "I know what's wrong with you, patient Mary." "You have fibromyalgia." They just put a silly name on something. It's a diagnosis.
And we talked about this before. Diagnosis, di means two, agnosis means not knowing. Two people, doctor and patients, don't know what the hell's going on.
Oh my gosh.
So let's stop putting a name on something and let's figure out what the deficiency is.
So let's get the magnesium and the minerals up.
So magnesium.
So more dark green leafy vegetables, more salads.
And organics as much as possible. How do we get the better stuff that, I mean, you said 1948?
Yeah.
That's when our vegetables were normal. I mean, where do we get vegetables in 2020 that maybe are like 1948? Is there farmers markets?
You nailed it on the head.
I'll hit it here at farmers markets in New York.
Nailed it on that.
I mean, either coast. Go to support our local grocers that are like Whole Foods, maybe. Do they have good stuff?
Or supermarket?
I mean, listen, if Whole Foods was healthy, they would've called it health foods. So, and listen, we shop there, but we tend to go to Fairway more often.
But you can find things.
Just make sure it has the number 9 in front of the PLO code or whatever. You know the code?
No, tell us what number 9 means.
So 9 is fine.
On the barcode?
So the barcode. So 9 is fine. So you'll see 4 digits, like 4782. If you just see 4 digits, that means it's chemicals. It's herbicides, pesticides, fungicides. So don't get that. If you see an 8, 8 is not great. 8 means it's genetically modified.
Where are we looking for this? On the package?
So on the fruit, you'll see a banana, you'll see a little sticker, and it's gonna say 97432. So if you just see 4 digits, you know that that's made with synthetic chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides. Any food, it's every food in the supermarket.
Whoa.
Says 9, so let's just say the 4 digits are 4782.
I'm making that up.
4782.
Alright?
See, I'm just writing it down.
If it just has 4 numbers, you know there's chemicals. Herbicides, pesticides, fungicides. Put a 9 in front of that, so it's 94728.
And now?
Now you know that that is organic.
Whoa.
9 is fine. If there's an 8 in front, so 84728, 8 not great. Not so good. You know it's genetically modified. And now there's another one, a 6. If there's a 6, it comes from out of the country. It's organic and Fair Trade certified. So 6s and 9s are great. Oh my God, stay away from these.
All the people want to Google this labeling. What do we call it?
It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a PL code.
So it's PL—
yeah, PLO code.
PLO. Yes, PLO code, guys. If you want to Google this, number 9, number 6.
Yeah, and I have this in the book, so you can—
this is amazing. Remind them of the book, Get Off Your Acid. Yeah, guys, you gotta pick this up. And it was just on with Kelly Ripa. What was that, a couple weeks ago? It was amazing. It was so great. And Ryan Seacrest, amazing. We'll talk about all that.
So minerals, what's the best thing?
So minerals number one. Number two. And one quick thing onto that point is—
Yeah, tell us.
What I also do to get more minerals in, I'll put a quarter teaspoon of Himalayan salt in a liter of water every day, 'cause you're getting trace minerals. Of course, I know you love, you drink our minerals, so I drink those daily minerals, but also the green powders, 'cause the green powders are loaded with minerals.
And what's the center molecule of the green juice powder?
Magnesium. So I'm all about diet variation. I want to get these minerals from as many different sources as possible.
I'll put topical creams on.
I have one over here somewhere where I'm putting magnesium cream on, and that's what I give to my kids. So you're getting magnesium from cream, I'm getting them from Epsom salts, I'm getting them from green powders, mineral powders, Himalayan salt, vegetables. So again, diet variation.
I did not realize this whole— I mean, I'm blown away, guys. I mean, and we're best friends here and I love you, but I, we've never talked about this 9 and 6, and we've never talked about, I mean, we've talked about the minerals and I, and I have to put in my testimony here because I had your mocha coffee creamer this morning, 3 cups. Uh, and I'm trying not to, I'm trying to cut back because I'll, I'll share with you guys a little confession here. We did a live blood test here in his office on the Upper East Side and on Park Avenue, and probably, gosh, in October or so. Do you remember?
I remember.
And he showed me on the big monitor and then I had Dorinda Medley from The Real Housewives of New York come in, and she came in and brought a friend. And regardless, when you look at your blood under this microscope that you have, buddy, I mean, it's scary. And you told me that I was somehow acidic because I was— obviously I had leaky gut. And you can see this in the blood. I don't know how you would describe it, but it's like these little bacterias in there, right?
You see bacteria, you see yeast, you see undigested proteins, and you're really seeing what's leaking in from the gut, which which is the biggest issue because, and Hippocrates said it, look to the gut, it's the cause of all disease. But I think we both said it one step further, look to the fork because it's really about, but it goes beyond that, it's the chemicals.
So we gotta take care of our gut.
Gut function is critical for optimal health.
And so if you're taking ibuprofen or coffee or drinking alcohol or wine, they're all acidic, and acid, and that's why your book is so brilliant, Get Off Your Acid. I mean, it just straight up says it, and I know it's provocative, I think we have to be provocative because we have to, we gotta get everyone's attention. And I feel like if anyone listening also has digestive issues, I know a lot of my clients were concerned about leaky gut and they thought the chia seed was causing issue. I think we talked about this. And it was more the coffee and the wine that my clients are overdoing because I tell them we can have that during our eating window when we fast, which is great. But if you're drinking a whole bottle of wine every night during that 4-hour window, sure, you may have a flat tummy, but you're gonna have a leaky gut.
Right, exactly.
And it's just not our goal.
I love your Flat Belly Water, Chia seeds.
Those are good for us.
It's, it's like the greatest ancient superfood.
You know, it's 50% omega-3 fatty acids, it's 20% protein, it's high in fiber and high in magnesium. So those are things that you want to put more of in your body. And I would say the other two supplements I like to downregulate the inflammation is, um, omega-3 fatty acids obviously is critical. We all need that fish oil. Uh, I would say it's probably—
I love your fish oil. You have a great capsule simple. You don't taste any fishy stuff.
You just—
down the hatch, and it's amazing. I take one every day. I use your creamer in my coffee when I do like a cruise control coffee, because I've been trying to— not that I don't love butter, you know how much I love butter. You've seen me at dinner, we've had dinner. But I'm trying to do a little less dairy. I just feel like, you know, not that I don't like dairy, and it's obviously butter or heavy cream has less sugar, hopefully none. And, uh, but I just feel like what you've been on here in New York for so many years, and that's why Kelly Ripa loves you, and that's why Ryan Seacrest comes to you and all these celebrities come to you for this solution that, I mean, it's so simple, but it's so powerful. And I think that's so powerful. So with, and with that said, we gotta wrap up here, buddy, but I want people to find you and I have all your information or obviously he's on Park Avenue, New York, but tell them more importantly, like how to find you on social and then tell 'em about, let's, let's talk about this 'cause it's in less than a month, right? We've got this great summit, but give 'em a little location socially in your website so they know how to find your products and all that. And you know, they're on Amazon. And everything too. But give them your social first.
And then to make one correction, I think I said P-L-O, it's P-L-U-C-O-D-E. Oh, say it again.
P-L-U-C-O-D-E. P as in Paul, L as in Larry, U as in umbrella.
Yeah, and they can find me, yeah, they can find me @GetOffYourAcid, and that's right.
Easy to spell.
Yeah, Instagram, Facebook, and Dr. Daryl Joffrey, D-R-D-A-R-Y-L Joffrey, and our website is getoffyouracid.com.
Yep, and if you guys are in New York, come see him. He's in the Upper East Side on Park Avenue. He's He's the best. But tell them about your summit, because I was so honored to be a part of it.
I'm so excited. And when we decided to do this, because Jorge and I both had addictions to sugar. Ah, wow.
Yes.
And here's the thing, Jorge. I mean, if I look at my addiction to sugar, it was the processed sugar. It was kind of all like the candy. But the big problem, this is what I was talking about with Kelly and Ryan, is that sugar has snuck its way into our diet, and it's hiding in all these so-called health foods.
If you take out sugar from the supermarket, you took out 84% of the products.
So people are unknowingly putting all this sugar into our body and they have no idea. And it's in things like granola and oatmeal and bagels and fruit juices and protein bars and—
Everywhere. And it's so, people are addicted, they don't even know it.
So this summit, it's March 23rd, is that right?
It's an online free summit. Amazing. So we got 45 of the top experts in the world and Jorge is one of our featured guys.
How did you get 45? That's a lot of us.
I'm telling you, it was a beast. It took us a year.
My co-host is Dr.
Robert Scott Bell from the Truth About about cancer. He's amazing. But we cranked him out and we had an amazing time. Our interview was great.
We did. Now, if people want to look into it and get ready for it, because it's in less than a month, I mean, literally it's a month away, tell them the website or where can they sign up and learn more and get ready for it.
You can sign up for free at getoffyoursugar.com, but Jorge, you'll have a link for everybody.
Oh, yeah.
No, absolutely. Which is going to be great. And when you sign up now, you'll get access immediately to the 3 of our speakers and some amazing, amazing bonuses. I have my top-based plant-based keto recipes to get off your sugar.
Yummy.

And it's in a format that we love because I think listening and watching and just being a part of it, it's so proactive. Proactive and so easy to attend, guys. So you can be anywhere in the world, right?
You can be anywhere.
And the tips were— I mean, like, you gave so many amazing tips.
And these are—
if you can just take a few of those tips away and add it, it's going to be huge.
I love it. So guys, you know where to go. Find this out. And then, you know, get off your acid, guys, literally. And be cautious of ibuprofen. Really be careful.
