#24 - How to instantly reduce inflammation in any joint
3 Mar 2020 · 21 min
Jorge Cruise and Dr. Daryl Gioffre explain how acid-forming foods like sugar, grains, and fruit juice drive chronic inflammation and disease. Black seed oil is three times more effective than turmeric at reducing joint inflammation. They recommend low-carb eating, magnesium, intermittent fasting, and turmeric with black pepper.

Hi, I'm Jorge Cruise, number one New York Times bestselling author and celebrity trainer, and I want to welcome you to the all-new Jorge Cruise Podcast. Every week I'll bring you the shortcuts to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, garden more, and even sleep better. It's not just about intermittent fasting or getting a flat belly. My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast.
Hey everyone, welcome to the podcast. It's Jorge and I'm in New York here with my guest co-host. You guys know Dr. Darrell. He's a dear friend of mine. I think of him as my brother in health and he's on the Upper East Side. We're at his office another Monday here and I'm so excited because this is a special week for me. I'm a Pisces. March 6th, this Friday, I'm turning 49. So we got such a great response from last week's podcast. If you didn't hear, we were talking about inflammation, specifically ibuprofen. So I asked Dr. Darrell to help me talk about how to reduce it, you know, kind of quickly in joints, because I know my mom— and we talked about her— she passed from these issues from her hip. And so many of you guys talked about how your hands hurt and your joints hurt. So I thought we'd go a little deeper on inflammation, especially since, you know, I'm turning almost 50 here. It's not yet. I mean, biologically, you were saying, Dr. Darrell, that I'm hopefully 34.
First, it's great to be back with everybody. You look absolutely amazing. And to our point, it's, uh, It's all about the biological versus the chronological age. So who cares about the number? It's all about how we are aging or slowing down premature aging. Yes, biologically you are definitely in the low 30s.
Well, and I give you huge credit for keeping me young, because I'll tell you, I learned this, uh, many years ago with my dad because he had prostate cancer 30 years ago. He just passed in this December, but passed peacefully at 89, cancer-free. And he had prostate cancer, which is a form of of disease in our body. And I learned years ago that, you know, obviously certain things from wheatgrass to minerals could help us. And here, jump 30 years later, here I am with you. You're kind of the guy known to get off your acid. And when we say acid, it's really not just the name of your book, Get Off Your Acid, but it's really this idea that a lot of us in our modern world— and you know, you know who loves you the most on season 12 here of The Real Housewives of New York? I saw you in the trailer. You look so good. Dorinda! Yeah, she had a lot of family and friends that were, you know, I, you know, suffering from leaky gut, it seems. And you did, you did on me the same thing you shared with her, this live blood test. And I didn't realize, as much as I eat in a 4-hour window, you know, the intermittent fasting, we do the one meal a day type thing, I was having a little bit of wine and obviously in the morning coffee. And without the right minerals to counter the acidity or the acid that comes from that, you know, I wasn't going out there having sugar in the sense of straight up, but wine has sugar and coffee doesn't have sugar, but it's acidic. So I thought maybe you could talk to us today, in honor of my birthday and all that, about how to stay young, keep our joints young. But maybe start with what is inflammation? And obviously the biggest culprits out there aren't ibuprofen. Hopefully not everyone's popping those, but it's the S-word, sugar. It's coffee, it's wine. But take it away, tell us inflammation, what is it? Because I don't think we talked enough about what it is because a lot of us just think inflammation means like you're swollen, you have a lump on your head. But it's not just a lump on your head, it's not like just a bruise.
What is inflammation?
Take us through this.
I'm glad you brought up that question because it's this word that we hear, but do we really know what that word means? Inflammation, we know it's bad because that's what people say, but inflammation is something that is so important to our body.
Totally, totally.
Because inflammation heals. You know, without inflammation, we'd be dead.
So it's a positive, there's a glass half full there.
Yeah, so if I slam my fingers in the door, it's the inflammation, that acute inflammation that's gonna heal the tissue. It's when inflammation becomes chronic that it kills.
And now in 2020, I hate to say it, we are, I mean, you said last week you go to the grocery store and 80 to 90% of what's there is full of acid-forming products, but what are they? I mean, obviously the S-word, yes?
Yeah, I mean, the S-word is the biggest, sugar, but let's dial it back and think about what acid is. What is that? It's corrosive, you know, acid could, eat a hole through metal, so think about what that's doing inside your body to your digestive system, causing leaky guts, literally punching holes in your gut, to your cardiovascular system, to your brain, to your kidneys, and if you look at these foods like sugar, it's what do these foods metabolize down into in your body? So sugar breaks down to lactic acid. Grains breaks down to sulfuric acid. I interviewed Dr. William Davis for the Sugar Summit, and he was saying that if you remove the acid from your diet from grains, you'll be removing 38% of the total net acid load in your body.
Wow, and remind everyone, a grain, I mean, we know sugar, I mean, and sugar, we should, I mean, we gotta break it down for everyone. Maybe we'll start with, well, you mentioned grains, but what are the big culprit grains that most of us forget about? I know the ones that have gluten, like rye, barley, wheat, but there's so many more grains, all grains.
Yeah, all.
Even the gluten-free ones, right?
All grains, think of like bagels and pastas, think about oatmeal's a big one. I don't know oatmeal. Think about granola, so these are things I took out of my diet because they will spike your insulin as much as sugar. Well, we don't think about that. People think of oatmeal as a health food, but it's not.
And I've always liked Cheerios and things like that because they're made from oats, right? And oats don't have gluten. I've had clients like Brooke— Brooke in Malibu had thyroid issue and she doesn't like gluten. But even gluten-free grains cause inflammation. So it's like, what the heck, you know? What do we do? So if someone loves their grains and sugar— now remind everyone, we know white sugar is white sugar, but we're talking everything from anything that causes insulin to go up, like agave nectar. Those are the exotic, sexy ones that we hear that healthy, but that's sugary, right?
Honey and agave, I would say, is the worst out of all of them. Oh God, because what's the worst sugar? It's not the glucose, it's the fructose. Yes, agave is 90% fructose, and that's more dangerous because your body could break down glucose anywhere in the body. Yeah, when you consume fructose, it goes right to your liver, and the liver has to— it's like all hands on deck. It's a poison, it's a toxin, and what happens is it stores it as fat. Indirectly, it spikes up insulin, it's going to make triglycerides, It makes fatty liver. I mean, they're seeing diseases in children right now that they see in alcoholics. Fatty liver in children because kids are doing so much fructose in all these fruit juices, which are the worst things.
So you just said it, fruit juices. Remind moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, us adults, grownups, what are these hidden, because we all think, oh, it has no added sugar. But it, I mean, not that fruit is bad in its natural form, but when you have a glass of, for example, what, like orange juice? How many oranges, right, Dr. Darrell? So yeah, you're taking—
So imagine Jorge eating 1 orange. Could you eat 5 oranges right now? I mean, you maybe could probably force yourself, but would you want to?
I'd be stuffed, yeah. You get all the fiber at least with it, right?
Right, and the important thing about the orange is yes, it's loaded with sugar, it's acid-forming. That's the difference between oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits. The other 3 are alkaline-forming. They're all citric acid out of the body, but when you take 5 oranges and you juice it, you're removing the fiber. No fiber, yeah. And you're just left with the sugar water.
Totally.
And the problem is it's a tsunami effect to your liver.
I love that metaphor, tsunami. It's a tsunami effect. Floods you. And when the liver has that much sugar and inflam— well, sugar in the body, it causes— then connect the dots. How does it cause this inflammation?
Hi, this is Jorge, and I wanted to interrupt the show just for a minute because I want to make sure that you're on my VIP mailing list, uh, for future podcasts and for insights and shortcuts on how to improve your health, uh, from everything on intermittent fasting to yoga to 8-minute workouts to how to just work better and how to have less stress and also how to manage pain. I mean, you name it, all my best shortcuts come out every Monday and it's totally free. You heard it right. So I'm gonna encourage you right now to take a second and jump onto your laptop and go to JorgeCruise.com. You can do it on your mobile device, obviously, and sign up for the Jorge Cruise Report. And it's totally free. Tell your loved ones about it, join it. It's over a quarter of a million people that are getting this email., and it's going out every Monday, and I want you to be a part of it so you know what's coming up next every week.
All right guys, let's get back to the show. That then literally causes pain eventually in the joint. We'll break it down because that acid does what to the body?
It spikes up your insulin, and insulin is not only your fat-storing hormone— so we talk about removing the belly fat with all the things you're doing right with Cruise Control Fasting and the Flat Belly Water. Yeah, so it causes that belly fat But the worst thing is it drives up inflammation and it's causing all these epidemic diseases like heart disease and cancer. We talked about cancer, which has overtaken heart disease now as the number one killer in 21 states. And Jorge, even Alzheimer's, which is now the fourth cause of death. Yeah, when you look at Alzheimer's, it's type 3 diabetes of the brain. It parallels inflammation of the brain. So this is the problem, and they've— it's been proven now the more insulin you dump into your blood over the course of your lifetime is going to lower your longevity. It's going to make you die faster. So this is the power of intermittent fasting and cruise control fasting. What are we doing? We're not putting sugar in. We're having that fasting state, which is increasing autophagy. But the big thing is that there's no insulin, no sugar, so your body's healing during that window.
And, you know, if you guys are following our new— my newer method with the one meal a day, and I know that's scary for some people, but, you know, you get these chias whether in the water or in a meal with almond milk, unsweetened, and a little avocado oil and a little stevia. I mean, it really holds up your appetite, doesn't break your fast. I did a great podcast, I don't know if you heard it, buddy, with Dr. Jason Fung in Toronto.
Amazing.
And he's, you know, the number one guy that's written all these books on intermittent fasting, and he talks about how people in Silicon Valley are doing one meal a day to not to lose belly fat. Sure, you're not gonna have any, but to maximize mental performance because sugar, what you just said, causes the opposite of mental performance. It causes the mind to go to mush. Yeah, right. I mean, literally, we forget everything. I mean, we erase our lives and we can't work well. I mean, we literally end up handicapping ourselves.
100%. I mean, I was speaking with Dr. Zach Bush at Cancer Schmancer Summit.
Oh yes, I love Fran. She doesn't— she have a new show too?
Yes, it's great.
Shout out to Fran.
We love her. She's awesome. Good friend of mine.
And she is someone that you work with to raise money for— tell them real quick, give her a little plug.
Yeah, her nonprofit is Cancer Schmancer. She's also in the Sugar Summit, and she's just an amazing human being. Overcame cancer naturally, and she's created this nonprofit that is literally powerful, changing lives. And she just knows so much about health. And what I love about her is about taking back our power. Yeah, listen, we know that Coca-Cola is the worst thing for the body. I used to drink 3 a day. But if we don't buy Coca-Cola, guess what happens to Coca-Cola? They go out of business. But the problem is, is that we're buying Coca-Cola. So we hold the power, and we need to take our power back And it's by doing things like this.
I love this.
So she's great.
So for anyone out there that wants to reduce inflammation in their joints right now, now let's talk about a solution. We talked about it briefly last week. You talked about minerals, you talked about healthy oils. Remind them. I know it's repetition, but as our buddy Tony Robbins always says, repetition is the mother of skill. Amen. So repeat what we got to hear here, because I mean, we gotta— I mean, I need to hear this again, and hopefully you do too. So tell us.
—So there's a bunch of things you could do, but I wanna just talk into Jorge's world for a little bit, because I think the most powerful thing to do is how we eat. It's diet variation, it's getting lots of vegetables, lots of healthy fats, moderate protein. This is important because when your animal protein becomes more than 15 to 20% in your diet, as far as your calories in a day, it actually turns to sugar. So indirectly, we're getting that sugar effect, and then low carbohydrates. So that's critical, but we also have to do the fasting. The fasting is critical because when you're fasting, your body's eating without eating, and that's the critical thing. It's not only increasing autophagy, but it's downregulating inflammation, it's resetting your microbiome, it's building up new stem cells, which is new healthy cells, so that's critical. We have to get the minerals. We talked about minerals last Monday. Totally, yeah. So we gotta get that magnesium. That's gonna help the body lower the inflammation, and a big one we didn't talk about last week is the black cumin seed oil, the black seed oil.
Wait, say it slowly so everyone can Google this. Tell them what to look up. Black seed oil.
Black seed oil?
That's what we type into the Google. Black seed oil.
And you can just check it out on my website. We have an amazing product, not necessarily you need to buy mine, but plugging it there.
No, but he does have it, and I take it, you've given it to me, and it's so small.
It's a little tiny capsule, but the thing is, we all know turmeric. It's a very powerful anti-inflammatory. Black seed oil is 3 times more anti-inflammatory than turmeric. There's over 700 studies, and we found this source, 'cause I was on a mission to find the most powerful natural anti-inflammatory. And we found one that has 3% thymoquin, which is like the active ingredient that lowers inflammation. Not to get scientific, but it's got 3 times more than any other black seed oil in the world. And it's found from Israel, and something about the climate in Israel makes the seed so much more powerful. Really? So again, I'm a huge fan of turmeric. Turmeric is a great thing to add.
Yes, turmeric's good too.
In fact, this is turmeric tea I'm drinking right here with ginger and black pepper because when you have your turmeric, you add black pepper, you know it increases the potency by 2,000%. Yes, yes. But the black seed oil is 3 times more potent. So I'm a huge fan of that for inflammation.
Well, and you guys know I'm addicted now to his coffee creamer that is made with all these incredible minerals and I've been doing that feeling less guilty about the coffee I have in the morning because you guys know how much I love coffee. It was in the book, The Hard Code, cover of Cruise Control. And we created this Cruise Control coffee. Originally was just butter, heavy cream, and all that, but obviously we knew about coconut oil and MCT oil.
But I love that you've made it into a powder.
And don't get me wrong, I love all your variations, but I'm obsessed. It tastes like hot cocoa. I mean, I literally feel like a kid again. And I know it's stevia. You know how much I love stevia, or stevia. I mean, I was on the Home Shopping Network a month ago, and I loved it because— that was awesome, by the way. Well, thank you. Yeah, I was so honored to be on there. We had to go to St. Petersburg Florida, but so many people— I mean, it sold out within 8 minutes, you know, and people are looking for solutions to, to hopefully enjoy life, still stay— I say sweet without the sugar. And you know, your creamer is made with stevia, right, as well. So it's such a powerful, healthy way to still mimic that, that sugary flavor but without the inflammation. That's the key.
And, and when you look at coffee, listen, I love— there's a lot of health benefits to coffee, but there's one huge downside. It's loaded with acids. The average cup of coffee is 1,000 times more acidic than a cup of water. Oh, and literally it's driving up inflammation. It's taking you out. And they did studies showing that in healthy individuals, 1 cup of coffee drives up inflammation by 54% in your cells. So this is the only product you're going to find in the world, yeah, that neutralizes the acid. So now you can basically enjoy the upsides of the coffee but minus the acid. Yes. And then we have the other benefits, which is the keto fat, so the coconut oil, the MCT oil. We have Himalayan salt, so that's gonna help the cravings.
It smells so good. I mean, literally, I mean, you got to get on home shopping. I'm gonna— you know what we did last night?
You're gonna love this. So, because the kids, like, you know, the world, they're all about it. Yeah, we took some coconut milk, your kids, and we put the—
you have the most, the most precious family too, guys. If you go to his Instagram, tell them your Instagram so they can see all your kids.
It's, um, your personal one. The personal one is Dr. Daryl Joffre. It's D-R-D-A-R-Y-L-G-I-O-F-F-R-E.
And he has the most beautiful wife. She's so gorgeous. And you have the most most precious kids. So tell us the story, what happened with them?
So they wanted to try Acid Kicking Coffee, and of course we're not going to give them the coffee. Yeah, exactly. So we put some coconut milk in the Vitamix, we added the, um, the mo— uh, no, Chelsea did the vanilla first.
Yes. And then because you can't put it in water, you put 100% almond milk, anything.
So this is the first time we tried it in coconut milk and a couple ice cubes, right? It was like the most delicious milkshake, healthy milkshake, um, that that the kids had, and they loved it, and then they wanted another one. So we did the, uh, the salted caramel. We'll do the mocha one tonight. Oh, but it's delicious. So there's so many— it's, it's versatile.
It is, it is. And, you know, if you guys don't believe me, we're gonna make sure that they watch your clip on YouTube with you recently, just this year already. It was in 2020. You were with Kelly Ripa, right? Yeah, a few weeks ago. I'm so proud of you because you've been friends— you've been guiding her for years, and I can't believe that you were never on her show yet. So it was about time, Miss Kelly Ripa, to have this Genius man on there. I'm so happy she did that because it's such a— I mean, you're such a resource, and I feel like you're not hidden because everyone in New York that's smart like Kelly and Ryan Seacrest, they know about you. But we need to get you to the heartland. We need, we need all of America and hopefully everyone listening to dial in. So let's wrap up with this. Tell them where to get a hold of you, your website. Tell them about our summit briefly, and then we'll be back next Monday, guys.
Awesome. Take it away. Thank you, Jorge. You can find me at getoffyouracid.com. Instagram is @getoffyouracid as well, and that's the book as well. And then we get his book, guys, it's critical.
It's, it's in my library. It's— and you've got new books coming up. We don't want to tell them yet, but soon, soon. January, January, I'll get off your sugar. Yes.
All right, but the summit— and I'm so happy that Jorge is my one of my four— we have 45 of the top experts, celebrities, Fran Dreschers in it as well. Yeah, in the world. 'Cause you make it easy, you make intermittent fasting easy, you make even doing one meal a day, you make it easy with the ways that you cheat the fast. And the things that you taught me were incredible.

I'm excited, I'm excited.
It's this Friday, guys, March 9th. 6, uh, 49. And I, I'm— I feel so lucky because I do feel— I, I will end with this, you know. It's— someone would have said, at 49, do you feel as good as you did in your 20s? I feel like not only do I feel as good as I did in my 20s, but in my 20s I was overweight and I was sluggish, and you were playing soccer and doing all this stuff, and we were in pain and all that. And I feel like, you know, uh, my yoga teacher KK— you met her at that party we had— she talks about sage wisdom, and you bring that, buddy. And I I think it comes from experience, you know.
