#25 - The superfoods to help fight coronavirus, lower inflammation and improve recall
9 Mar 2020 · 20 min
In this March 9, 2020 episode of the Jorge Cruise Podcast, host Jorge Cruise interviews Dr. Darrell Joffrey, a New York‑based functional‑medicine practitioner. The conversation centers on how diet and lifestyle can reduce inflammation, protect brain health, and boost immunity—especially relevant during the coronavirus pandemic. They explain that brain fog and age‑related memory loss stem from chronic inflammation driven by excess sugar and an imbalanced omega‑3/omega‑6 fatty‑acid ratio. Dr. Joffrey describes a fingertip blood test that measures this ratio and recommends keeping it below 3:1 (ideally 1:1). They discuss avoiding pro‑inflammatory vegetable oils (soybean, corn, canola, safflower, sunflower, and even flaxseed oil) and favoring healthy fats such as wild‑caught salmon, fish oil, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, and MCT oil. The duo provides practical guidance on reading PLU codes on produce to identify organic (9), fair‑trade (6), synthetic (4), and genetically modified (8) items. Their top superfood picks are avocado (called “God’s butter”) and cacao (100 % dark, low‑sugar, magnesium‑rich). They suggest simple ways to incorporate these foods—avocado with olive oil, seeds, and salt; cacao powder or bars for chocolate cravings. For neuroprotection they recommend three supplements: magnesium, high‑dose fish oil (3 g/day, EPA > DHA), and a B‑complex (including B12 shots). Intermittent fasting (Cruise Control fasting) is highlighted as a powerful tool, illustrated with a patient whose mother with Alzheimer’s showed dramatic functional improvement after adopting a one‑meal‑a‑day regimen. The episode also includes promotional segments: a call to join Jorge’s free weekly newsletter, information about Dr. Joffrey’s website (getoffyouracid.com) and practice (joffreychiropractic.com), the at‑home omega‑inflammation test kit, and the upcoming free “Get Off Your Sugar Summit” on March 23 featuring multiple health experts. The overall tone is enthusiastic, conversational, and persuasive, aiming to empower listeners with actionable dietary and lifestyle shortcuts to improve memory, reduce inflammation, and support immunity.

Every week I'll bring you the shortcuts to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, garden more, and even sleep better. It's not just about intermittent fasting or getting a flat belly. My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. I want to welcome you to the podcast. I'm super excited to have you listening today to today's show. It's March 9th. It's a start to the week as I like to start every week with one of my guest co-hosts at my side here, and I've got Dr. Darrell Joffrey. He's one of the top guys in New York that really has helped me open my eyes to how to reduce inflammation in the body, and he works with people like Kelly Ripa, Ryan Seacrest. He's the author of a book that is a must-get called Get Off Your Acid. He talks about how to get rid of leaky gut, lower inflammation, lower, you know, if you're getting sick and if you're concerned about the coronavirus, he's a specialist on bolstering immunity. So today's talk is super, super vital. You want to share today's podcast with your loved ones, especially if they're scared of going out. And who isn't right now? I mean, I'm scared to fly and I got to fly this week. So it is what it is. We got to do the best we can do and we're talking about superfoods and how they can bolster our recall, our memory, but the great thing is they can also, certain superfoods can bolster our immunity. And Dr. Darrell, you kind of have a little, uh, an adage of sorts, uh, can you share that with us?
Quality of the foods you eat will improve the quality of the cells, and the quality of your cells will improve our aging. And it's really about slowing down the premature aging. And again, you're 49, you look like you're in your 30s, and I say that truly. And well, you know, you just turned No, but you do. Nike doesn't say just try it, they say just do it. And I love when clients say that. Yeah, oh, I tried, I tried. I said no, trying is lying. Just do it. Stop with the excuses, as Tony Robbins says. Yes, turn your can'ts into musts, or stop shoulding, shoulding all over yourself, right?
Yes.
And the moment we do that, we change our lives. So why do we have, um, bad brain fog, mental clarity issues as we are aging? It's because of the inflammation. We've talked about this for the past 2 weeks now.
And as much as sometimes people is that, you know, My dad passed last year and he passed with great recall. He had a great diet. He changed his diet. A lot of people think it's genetics and it's just a way of getting old, but just clear the myths that it's— this is more lifestyle choices when we lose our recall. I mean, people are scared. I know, you know, I'm working with AARP this year and, you know, I'm turning 50 next year, but I joined last year at 48. And, you know, the number one thing that, that they've asked me to talk about is how to improve people's well-being when it comes to recall, because we're all working later in life, you know, and we need, we need our noodle to work. We don't want it to break down because then we lose the independence, we lose the ability to work. So for anyone out there that wants that edge, tell us your top 3, or if you have more, like superfoods. I know you're making some good notes here, so reveal.
There's so many things I want to say.
Drum roll. So number 1, is there a number 1, or do you want to go backwards and start?
I want to go backwards and just give a little kind of like very short issues of why this is happening, because the brain is 60% fat. We have to understand this, sugar is taking us out, it's causing inflammation of the brain. You know, if you look at Alzheimer's, we talked about this 2 weeks ago, it's now the 4th cause of death and it parallels inflammation of the brain. And what happens when sugar is lingering around the body, it causes something in your brain called glycation. And basically it attaches to a fat particle or a protein particle and that's what creates the plaquing. So it's not just about the superfoods, it's about what we avoid, but if you're putting sugar into the body, your brain is gonna use that first, but why? Because it wants to get rid of it. Sugar's a dirty fuel, and it wants to burn it off first. So that's why it'll use that first, but we all know based on cruise control fasting and all the things you're teaching, it's about ketosis, it's about getting those healthy fats into the body that will nurture the brain, and we have a test that measures this. It's called the omega-3 acid inflammation test.
Really?
We take a drop of blood from the fingertip, and we should do this. Yeah. And we send it to a lab, and in 2 weeks, It tells us, number one, how deficient you are in omega-3s, but more importantly, it tells you the most critical number for brain inflammation, which is going to affect your memory, your brain's processing speed, your brain's sustained attention, and most importantly, Jorge, cognitive function. It's the omega-3 omega-6 ratio. And that ratio— so omega-3s are anti-inflammatory, that's like your wild-caught salmon, that's like your fish oils. Omega-6s are pro-inflammatory. That's bad. That's like your soybean oil, that's your corn oil, that's your hydrogenated vegetable oils.
All vegetable oils, avoid, guys.
Yeah, even like flaxseed oil, something that unless you're making at home, it becomes inflammatory. Safflower, sunflower, so you need a small—
Now the healthy oils, tell them the healthy ones, because I know there's everything from olive oil. Huge fan. You know, to avocado, to coconut oil, to MCT oil. You guys use it when you, You have your creamers and you use a little combination of coconut with MCT. So these are the healthy oils and I always tell my subs that it's the vegetable oils we have to be careful of. I think the one that Shaina, you know Shaina that we have on the podcast as well, I love her, she was the one that literally shocked me into corn oil and she told me what she and Ryan Seacrest do is they avoid all that and she got me onto these Siete chips. Have you tried them?
Yes, they're awesome.
Remember we had some at the party? At your party, yes. Yeah, yeah, made with cassava root, so no corn and then no corn oil, it's made with avocado oil and avocado, people forget it's a fruit. And so I'm not saying it's fruit oil, but it kind of is oil from a fruit, and that's different than corn or soybean. So the big ones are like that, and canola too, right?
Canola is bad, safflower, sunflower. And look at all the processed foods, you're going to see those on every, every food, and they inflame your brain. And I put a study in the book from this guy, his name is Dr. Joseph Hilben. Yeah. And he studied the blood of murderers and people in insane asylums. This is crazy, Jorge. And they found that the average omega-6, remember omega-6s are bad, ratio from omega-6s to omega-3s was 70 to 1. And what that means is that they have 70 times more of these inflammatory fats in their body, and what happens is the omega-3s and omega-6s compete for the same enzymes in the brain. But if you have 70 times more of the bad ones, guess what's gonna win every time? The bad ones. And what he's saying is that their brains were so chemically whacked, aside from the psychotropic drugs they're probably taking, that they could not—
acid forming as well.
100%.

And it's totally free. Tell your loved ones about it, join it. It's over a quarter of a million people that are getting this email and it's going out every Monday and I want you to be a part of it so you know what's coming up next every week. Alright guys, let's get back to the show.
But they could not make a rational, conscious, sane decision. So the ratio should be 1 to 1, and I've tested thousands in my practice. I've only seen one— it wasn't me, it was my beautiful wife Chelsea, a healthy vegetarian.
She is, yeah, she's so cautious.
So there's a healthy way to do it. And I was 2 to 1, but you don't— you want to be under 3 to 1. But the average American is 20 to 1, which is not good.
I think we should do a video and we'll share it with everyone. Yeah, I'll come in here, we'll do it this month. That, you know, that I'm 49— oh my gosh, we gotta have it before 4, and then at 50 I have to be like Chelsea. Are you at 1:1 yet or not yet?
I'm 2:1.
All right, can we get to 1:1? Is that the goal?
You can, but as long as you're under 3:1, you're in a good place.
All right, well good. All right, so give us a list, a little shopping list. What would you put on this list if people are to go out there and get some, some things specifically to help improve, that are superfoods or, you know, whatever the product is, to improve recall? For me, number 1 on my list is your creamer. I love your creamer because it has these healthy fats from the right sources, you put in things like coffee that, I mean, we've talked about that, that will do that. So obviously that's it. But tell us some of the simplest things that are out there that people can get at a farmer's market, Whole Foods, on Amazon. What are some things that people can look into and tell us to be cautious of certain things? I remember what, 2 podcasts ago you talked about, what was that code? The U—
the PLU code.
Yes. Oh my gosh. If you didn't hear our podcast from 2 weeks ago, guys, re-listen to it.
Yeah.
But tell them in a nutshell what you mentioned about the number 6 and the number 9, I think, right?
So 6 and 9 are fine. So you'll see a code on all vegetables and produce and basically all that stuff in the grocery store. If you see 4 numbers, let's say 4782, let's say that's the number, that's bad. That's chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, all that bad stuff, herbicides, pesticides. If you see 9, is fine, that's organic. 6 in front of those num— those 4 numbers is out of the country organic, Fairtrade certified. 8's the worst one. 8 is not great. 8 is genetically modified, which we must avoid like the plague.
Wow.
Guys, I know it's more expensive to buy organic, but I hate to say this, we have to demand organic. Your health is worth it. Please just go to the farmer's market, make relationships there. There's inexpensive ways to do it. Oh my God.
Yeah, no, absolutely. So if we're going shopping, tell us what to get. Give us 3 things specifically right now, your top 3 picks.
Number 1, you talked about avocado. It's God's butter. It is the most perfect food. It's versatile. You could literally do it in 30 seconds. I take an avocado in the morning.
Yeah.
I put some extra virgin olive oil on it. Of oil, some chia seeds, some hemp seeds, some cumin, some Himalayan salt, and boom, I have a healthy, amazing breakfast ready to go. It's loaded with the healthy fats and minerals, and those are things that we want to have more of.
And if you guys are doing the one meal a day, and if you're maybe doing it in the morning, that's perfect. I'll do that on the weekends with friends and family. But if it's in the nighttime, I mean, there's no reason you couldn't have an avocado at night too, right, Dr. Darrell? Or throw it anytime.
It's good anytime. Or throw the avocado into your avocado chocolate mousse. Or your chocolate chia pudding. So there's other ways to enjoy it to make things healthier for your children. That's a big one as well. Sneak it in there, they won't know.
Avocados, guys. So avocado oil, critical, and the avocado itself. What's your next, uh, superfood?
Uh, I want to kind of move out of like the normal realm of what people think of, but I would say like cacao is a big one. You know, it's like, who doesn't love chocolate? We love chocolate, but we got to get away from the milk chocolate, the dairy, which is obviously not the best thing for us. So sugar and all the other bad things in it.
So cacao, tell us what to look for in a good cacao. Obviously organic, we want to avoid the number 8, we want the number 9. Is that literally on the label? Tell people where to look for it on the label.
Yeah, I mean, you want to see 100% cacao ideally. I mean, that's, that's the goal. If you're going for dark chocolate, it's got to be 100% dark chocolate with no added sugar. But I always go for the cacao if you're going for a bar. But we just love the, um, the cacao powder. What's the brand that you love, which you use all the time? Navitas, which we use as well.
It's organic. Yeah, yeah, we use that in so many different things.
And why is cacao great? It's unrefined chocolate, so it's low in sugar. It's not going to spike insulin. It's great for brain health. It's loaded with magnesium, which is number one neuroprotector of the brain. Totally. Yeah. So if we want to help brain fog and all that stuff that we're talking about, we need more foods with magnesium. Cacao is a great way to cheat the chocolate, and you can put it in so many different things. It's very, very versatile.
I love that. I love that. And if someone right now feels like their recall is already stumbling, can you— maybe we'll end on this— give people some of your practical insight on how to overcome this? And if they are forgetful, they may say, oh, I got to write it down, or I forget this or that. Is there a way to— I'm not saying to necessarily reverse damage, but how much can people do once they realize that this is something that it's a lifestyle choice and that their choices for the last 20, 30, 40 years have been kind of in the wrong direction, just because we didn't know better, and now that we know better, should people just say, "Ugh, I'm too old, it's too late," or give us some hope, hopefully, please?
Never give up. I'm gonna give you, I wanna give you 3 of my top neuroprotectors of the brain, but first, you gotta get rid of the sugar. We gotta get off sugar, that's critical, we know that. Increase the fats, increase the vegetables, but 3 neuroprotectors, then I wanna finish with a very brief, 30-second story of a patient of mine whose mom has Alzheimer's to show the power of fasting, intermittent fasting, cruise control fasting, to basically change brain function.
I love that, all right.
Number 1 most powerful neuroprotector of the brain, I said before, is magnesium. Magnesium. All right, and I think a couple times ago we talked about all the different ways you can get the magnesium into the body. Number 2, omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil. If you're an adult, you gotta take 3 grams a day. Ours, you're taking 3 softgels, very, very easy. It's concentrated through molecular distillation. Give omega-3s to your kids. Kids need the fish oil as well. So important, but they need more DHA, we need more EPA. So ours was designed 2:1 ratio, EPA to DHA. Number 3, B vitamins. B vitamins are critical. They protect your neurons, and they're so important for brain function. So I like a B complex. A couple times a month I get a B12 shot with magnesium, also some adrenal support.
So that's okay to do?
100%, 100%.
But B—
Vitamins are critical. Um, and going back to the story, so my patient, um, who's been coming to me for a while, her mom has Alzheimer's. And she was in here, we were getting some orthotics for her, and just was really kind of going downhill. Um, wasn't speaking, wasn't even able to walk. Started intermittent fasting with her. She comes to me like a few weeks later, it's— her mom's a new person. Obviously it's not curing Alzheimer's, we know that, but she's talking. She's like, Daryl, you will not I cannot believe the difference in my mom. She's walking, she goes, if she came in your office, you would not even believe that this was the same person. So the power of just skipping that morning meal and going to 2 meals a day, and even better, 1 meal a day, it's crucial for your health. We got to do that. And you know, so there's a lot of different things, but those are the 3 things I've done in my practice. I'm gonna tell you that ratio, if someone has a 20:1 ratio, if it's 20:1, that's not good. But I can actually reverse that ratio in 3 to 4 months from just doing high-dose fish oil. And we have pre and post tests. Wow. So it's powerful, you gotta do it.
And if you guys wanna work with Dr. Darrell, he's obviously in New York City. I mean, we don't really shout it out, but tell them where you are in New York, 'cause you're on Park Avenue and you have a website for your office and your practice and you have people, and I know there's a wait list, 'cause there's so many people that come here. I mean, you're literally working night and day. This man is a busy guy. And he's writing a new book that'll be out next year. But if they wanted to come see you, tell them where you're at and then give them the social and then give them your website because you do have products that they can get the fish oil. They can get these powders, they're on Amazon. It is on Amazon too, right?
Yeah, it is.
It's everywhere, but tell us.
And guys, it's not about pushing my products. I just want you to take these products.
No, they're great.
But we obviously designed this and they are great.
No, I appreciate that you've created these.
That's important.
Yeah, no, thank you. Absolutely.
