#36 - THINK FIT: I HAVE THE INNER RESOURCES THAT CAN HANDLE ANY OBSTACLE I ENCOUNTER.
20 May 2020 · 17 min
In this May 20, 2020 episode of the Jorge Cruise Show, host Jorge Cruise opens with a quote about obstacles and immediately frames the discussion around the distinction between predictable challenges (like sleep, eating, exercising) and unpredictable obstacles (sudden events that disrupt plans). He cites alarming health statistics about belly fat and its impact on immunity, especially relevant during the COVID‑19 pandemic, and positions himself as an "8‑Minute Life Strategist" with a 25‑year background in fitness, nutrition, and life coaching. Cruise introduces a ThinkFit affirmation—"I have inner resources that can handle any obstacle I encounter"—and guides listeners through a three‑time repetition, emphasizing the science of embodied affirmations and referencing Louise Hay and Tony Robbins. He explains the difference between a reaction (impulsive) and a response (thoughtful) and offers practical mindset strategies for handling unforeseen setbacks, such as filtering emails and prioritizing urgent matters. Personal anecdotes illustrate obstacles: his divorce, the sudden death of his father, and the broader global obstacle of COVID‑19. He underscores human resilience, drawing on historical pandemics, wars, and personal stories of friends like Brooke Burke. The episode concludes with a call to share the podcast, a plug for a recent interview with dermatologist Dr. Tess about vitamin D and skin health, and an invitation to join his live client sessions. Throughout, Cruise blends motivational self‑help, health advice, and personal storytelling to empower listeners to view obstacles as opportunities for growth.

Happy Wednesday! It is May 20th, 2020. On today's ThinkFit, we're gonna start with a quote that says the following: Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. With that said, let's get the show started. It's a fact, 91% of us have a dangerous amount of belly fat, and it isn't just unsightly. When you have too much belly fat, you lower your immunity and increase your chances of diabetes, stroke, cancer, and even poor respiratory health. The good news is that you can reduce dangerous belly fat and reboot your life in just 8 minutes. We made it, guys. It's hump day. Welcome. I'm so excited you're here. Uh, thank you for listening yesterday. And on today's, uh, show, on today's Think Fit, we're gonna get into this whole world of obstacles a little bit. Um, now I want to clarify the difference between an obstacle and a challenge. We talked yesterday about challenges, and I shared with you my example of wanting to go to bed, and I've been struggling. I, I don't even want to giggle about it because it's not funny. Um, that I've been trying for a good decade to try to get it to bed at 9:00. It's been the biggest challenge of my life, and I can predict it because it's been going on for a while. But this week, and maybe the podcast helped me. I mean, it's kind of weird. I do listen to my own podcast sometimes, and I actually, I use it throughout the day to stay focused and to get myself on track. I listen to other people's podcasts too, of course. But I'll give you an example. So sleep, for me, it's something predictable. I got to do it every day. We sleep every day, right everyone? So it's a challenge, going to bed early. You know, you got to eat every day. That can be a challenge. You got to exercise. That's a challenge. The difference though of an obstacle, in my opinion, and this is from my research, an obstacle is something that you can't predict. Not like sleep, not like eating. It's something like in the middle of the night if you're sleeping and you hear a noise. You're like, "Oh man," and now you're up. That's an obstacle. It's something you can't kind of predict ahead of time. It's pesky sometimes. You've got your eye on the targets, like the quote we said here, you've got your eye on that target. Say you're driving a car, right? And you know you're gonna go to get your mail today, right? I gotta go do that later this afternoon. I gotta put on a mask. I gotta go all the way downtown San Diego. I'm not excited, but I gotta go do it. And you know, going there, that's my challenge. I just get in the car and do that kind of a thing. But what if something comes up, right? Like someone jumps out in front of me, or an obstacle, or a car bumps me or something. That, that's an obstacle. You can't plan for that. So that's what we're going to talk about right now is how do you prepare for those things that you can't foresee, these obstacles. And today's ThinkFit is really designed to get you to come through that and see the glass half full. Because remember, our thoughts are the one thing we can control. And since our thoughts are the thing we can control, we can also handle how we react or respond to that obstacle. And there's a difference between those two words. I'm sure you know the difference, right? A reaction is quick, it's fast, it's impulsive. A response is a little more thought out. You know, I get, my gosh, so many emails every day. And I give myself a window every day to check my emails. And only certain emails come through to me, the ones that are urgent. The ones that aren't get filtered down and I'll check them over the weekend or I'll check them on a Friday. But you know, everyone, and I'm sure you can understand this, I mean, we have limited bandwidth, right guys? We have so much time. We have ourselves to take care of. We have our families. We have our loved ones. If you guys are going through this coronavirus, you wanna, do extra to stay healthy, and maybe it's affected your finances, your work, your career. So you're thinking about that. And you know, as much as you want to hear from a person that you love kindly or love very much dearly, and they are reaching out because they need this or that from you, and it's not like an A-list item, and you wanna be there for them. If you get that interruption, that's an obstacle. How do you deal with that? And so there are ways that you can try to deal and shield yourself from obstacles, you know, but sometimes they get through. And when they do, what do you do? Whether it's someone jumping out in front of you while you're driving your car, or it's an email that, you know, you're in the middle of writing something or you're doing something very intentional. And then for some reason that darn email or text gets in and you're like, oh my God. And now you gotta go take care of it. And you can't block it. You know, it's something that you need to take care of. So that's what we're going to deal with right now. I've got an affirmation, a ThinkFit affirmation, that I think is going to give you the resolution, the resolve, the awakeness to deal with anything. Because you can deal, deal with it. You absolutely can. So here it is. I'm going to do it as we always do. I'm going to say it 3 times just with myself. You listen to these words, and then we're going to do it together 3 times. And remember what the science has shown: when you want to take something and make it stronger within you, embed it inside of you, if you want to make what you think and what you want a reality, the more engaged you can get your body, your voice, the more powerful the result will be. And so I learned this when I was in my 20s, you know, and good 20 years ago from the top people. We're talking Louise Hay. If you Google Louise Hay, she's one of the forefront people on affirmations on this planet Earth. Tony Robbins is a huge player in this field too. I mean, I, I think of him as a brother. He wrote the introduction of my first book. I talk about him often. I went to his events just 2 years ago, right when I was going through a divorce and hard times, and I needed to get my head wired on. I needed some really deep affirmations, and You know, because you can see that glass when you go through something difficult like a divorce or a death, you know, and you can really end up depleted. But you know, we gotta move forward, and sometimes you need that coach. So I have coaches. I'm your coach right now. And so let's take a deep breath in, listen to these words, and let's get this into our bodies by standing up, chest up, shoulders back. Take a deep breath in. If you can, go in front of a mirror. I always say go to the bathroom because I think most people have mirrors in their bathroom, but wherever you have a mirror, it doesn't matter. And say the following with me 3 times. Well, I'm going to do it first, then say it 3 times with me. All right, here it is: I have inner resources that can handle any obstacle I encounter. Hear these words again: I have inner resources that can handle any obstacle I encounter. I have inner resources that can handle any obstacle I encounter. Think about that as we're about to do it together. Now, you have inner resources. What does that mean? It's kind of broad, inner resources. You have the power of faith. You have the power of experience. If you're like me in midlife, you've lived a couple decades. Think back on that. If you're younger, the stories of other people's lives, biographies, can give insight to that. I have been someone in my 20s that read hundreds of books on people's biographies. To get those examples of how people overcome obstacles, you know, because obstacles, like challenges, are a sign of life. We don't like obstacles because they're unpredictable, but look at the coronavirus, look at COVID-19 and what it's done to our planet, what it's done to the Earth, what it's done to your life, what it's done to my life. It's an obstacle. But we have to work with it. We have to make the best of it. And you have the inner resources that can handle anything. So let's do this together right now, 3 times, you and me. Take deep breath in. Let's say this together: I have inner resources that can handle any obstacle I encounter. Again: I have inner resources that can handle any obstacle I encounter. Stand tall, look in that mirror, say these words, take a deep breath in and say it with me. I have inner resources that can handle any obstacle I encounter. And that is the truth. You are from a species that has had challenges before. This COVID-19 is not new. There've been other pandemics throughout history. These things happen. There've been wars, there've been famines, there have been tragedies, but we are resilient people. As my friend Brooke Burke says in Malibu, we are capable. And I love her resolve. I love her strength. She's given it to me at times when I lost my strength. I had a time when I was going through my divorce, my most recent one, and hopefully my last, but it was Thanksgiving. And I remember that day 2 years ago, and I was alone and I was at her home in Malibu, and she and I had a wonderful evening. She had a gorgeous dinner party, and it just happened to me. I did not expect to have my partner vanish without getting in the details and being respectful to that person. But I was there alone and it was an obstacle. I didn't like it. I was, very sad, heartbroken, you know. And she reminded me how capable I was. I was like, oh, but come on, you know. And we had been together almost 5 years and, you know, married less than 3 years. And for me, it was hard, really, really darn hard. That's an obstacle you don't plan on, divorce, usually, you know. Or, you know, fast forward to just this last December, I lost my dad, you know. Now, I knew he was going to pass eventually. We all have to pass, and he was in his late 80s, but he was a survivor. He overcame prostate cancer 30 years ago. I've talked about him on the podcast, and we did not— my sister and I, Marta and I— did not expect my dad to pass. It was on Christmas Eve. An obstacle. Whoa, that's heavy, right? Your parent dies, but you have the ability, the inner resources to handle that. And if you don't think you do, your disempowering belief is that you're not capable, but you have to know you are capable. And just look back on history. Think of a time right now, let's end with this, where you've had your worst case obstacle pop up, something you could not plan for, like sleep. Sleep doesn't count. Going to bed early or not, that's something predictable. It happens all the time. You have to go to sleep every night, I hope, right? But a death, a divorce, maybe it's a financial struggle, think of something that you've done in the past and know that you got through it. That is my message to you, and that you are resilient and that you can do this. And it may be through something like a podcast, like right now. You know, I think the pod— a podcast is for me the equivalent of what I did for 20 years. I was obsessed with sharing information and I did it through books, wrote over 30 books, right? Many of them on the New York Times. And, Every book, put your heart and soul into, you know. But now with a podcast, with what we're doing right now, I mean, I'm in your ear. I love hearing podcasts of other people. This is powerful. And so you, you have me as a coach, as a friend, as a life strategist. And I can tell you, you know, it doesn't take 2 years to get through something. You can get through it by making a decision, which in its Latin root means to cut off, to decide. To decide means to cut off and just decide right now that you are capable, that you have this inner grit in you because you are a human being. No matter what happened in your past, we come from a species of mammals, of people that are resilient, and we have gotten through some horrible things in the past. And remember, these obstacles, very much like challenges, are strengthening ourselves. It's, it's the weight we need to grow and expand. So see this glass half full. Share today's podcast with your loved ones, with someone that you know has had an obstacle pop up in their life. Could be COVID-19, could be something a lot worse. Maybe someone that did pass from COVID-19 and there's a family member that is just devastated and just not recovered from— not recovering from that. It could be Someone that you know that's going through a really hard time with a relationship, maybe on the brink of a divorce. Share this podcast with them. Could be someone who was in a car accident recently and now their neck hurts. They weren't expecting that obstacle. Share this, please, guys. That's the only thing I ask for. You know, I really— I do this to help myself. I do this to help you. And let's help others, because if we can make this ThinkFit revolution continue. That I think may be my greatest legacy, and I'm excited because this is only the second week of doing ThinkFit. You guys know I love my podcast, and I'm committed to bringing you the best interviews on Mondays with the best people out there. And if you didn't listen to Monday's show with Dr. Tess, she is one of the world's leading dermatologists. We talked about immune function and how this paradox the sun, uh, that ages our skin is also the thing that gives us vitamin D, which is critical during COVID-19. So I want to plug that because that was— it's a great show. It was on Monday. There's a video. I'll be releasing it as an audio podcast this afternoon so you can listen to it because there's— it's great, great material. And it's this paradox, right, because we need sunshine for vitamin D production, and you all should be getting it, but too much will wrinkle you give you possible skin issues. So how do you balance this dance with this fire? Literally the sun, right? Listen to the podcast, it's great. And share today's message, guys. I really, really appreciate it.
