#5 - Which Fruits Can You Grow That Are Better Than Candy?
21 Oct 2019 · 18 min
In this episode of the Jorge Cruise Podcast, host Jorge Cruise welcomes Dr. Darryl Joffrey to discuss why many people think they must avoid fruit, and how to choose low‑sugar, nutrient‑dense options that support fasting and overall health. They explain how processed fruit juices create a "tsunami of sugar" that floods the bloodstream with fructose, depleting magnesium and potassium, and describe fructose as a toxin that burdens the liver. The conversation then highlights specific fruits that are low in sugar and high in beneficial compounds: avocado (dubbed "God's butter") for its healthy fats and minerals; lemons and limes for their alkalizing, low‑sugar profile; tomatoes for antioxidants and alkaline properties; and berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) as "brain berries" that should be paired with healthy fats to blunt glucose spikes. They also discuss the importance of mineral salts, especially Redmond Real Salt from the Great Salt Lake, for hydration and mineral balance during fasting. Jorge shares his "Cruise Control" fasting approach, recommending avocado, avocado oil, olive oil, and salt during the eating window while avoiding inflammatory vegetable oils like corn and soybean oil. Throughout, they promote Dr. Joffrey’s upcoming sugar book, his existing book "Get Off Your Acid," and various resources such as Instagram, a free cheat‑meal event, and Jorge’s 8‑minute yoga routine. The tone is conversational, enthusiastic, and promotional, aiming to educate listeners on low‑sugar fruit choices, fasting strategies, and related products.

Hi, I'm Jorge Cruise, number one New York Times bestselling author and celebrity trainer, and I want to welcome you to the all-new Jorge Cruise Podcast. Every week I'll bring you the shortcuts to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, garden more, and even sleep better. It's not just about intermittent fasting or getting a flat belly. My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. All right guys, it is Monday. Welcome to the podcast. What's going on guys? I'm here in New York City with my buddy Darryl Joffrey, Dr. Joffrey, Dr. Darryl. He's here. We had a great time last week. We were talking about sugar and inflammation. Today guys, we're going to be talking about fruits because one of the biggest things a lot of my celebrity clients want to say is, "Oh, I can never eat fruit again," and luckily you can. We're going to talk about low sugar fruits. We're going to talk about the ones that are What did you call it? God's butter?
God's butter.
You guys know what we're talking about. Tell them, reveal.
The good old avocado. Woo-hoo!
Drum roll on that. Yes. I love avocado.
Should have one every day.
Yep, so we're gonna talk about that, and obviously, guys, we're in New York. We're at his office, so tell them where your office is, because I always like to give them a little— because this is a place, it's not a secret location, you can Google it, but many celebrities come here, many high-profile people. You have everyone, I don't know if you can mention some names, but Kelly was here recently. She talked about it on air.
Who else comes in here? You've got like the—
The food god. Can we say that?
Food god comes in.
If you guys know the Kardashians, it's Kim's bestie, right?
Yeah. Jazmyn Choban. And yeah, I mean, your good friend Dorinda.
I love my Dorinda. Shout out to Dorinda.
Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Dodd and a whole bunch of amazing people. But, you know, we take care of it.
It's like Malibu here or Hollywood, you know, on the Upper East Side.
Upper East Side.
What's our cross streets again?
We're at 1020 Park Ave between 85th and 86th.
—so come check it out and get adjusted, you can get your blood looked at, you can get his products, you can get his book, I mean, take a picture, he does it all. So they're the best. But so let's dive into this because fruit, you know, most people think fruit is good and it is. I don't want to ever say on record that fruit is bad. But what people do to it sometimes and what manufacturers do, you know, like an extreme tsunami of sugar, you just, we were talking before we started the podcast, because you know, a lot of times when I work with someone who's fast and they're like, "Oh, I don't know if I can do it, I need sugar in the morning," pass out. And it's like we've talked about this and we've been using that amazing sea salt from Utah. And what I do is now I add a pinch of that in the morning to my water and that's like Himalayan sea salt but it's from Utah. Tell them about the salt you told me about, the Redmond.
It's from the Great Salt Lake and what I love about it, it's really untouched. I mean the problem with so many of these sea salts is that they're just riddled with plastics and they've done all these studies, Jorge, I know you've seen them. Oh yeah, you told me about this. All these popular brands and because of the elements that we've inherited in our earth, which is kind of the sad state of what's going on with our environment, but they're just plagued with plastic. So things like the Redmond Real Salt, I'm a huge fan of because it's not exposed to that.
Yeah, shout out to those guys in Utah. They have the best.
They're phenomenal, the best.
I was at a expo. 84 trace minerals. Oh, they're amazing, and rich in magnesium, potassium, which is what, in my opinion, helps you hydrate better so you don't feel false hunger. So when you're fasting, that's what I'd rather have than a glass of OJ, orange juice. Tell them why it's a tsunami of sugar, because how many oranges, right, go into a glass? It's like multiples, and no fiber. I mean, tell them about that. And then we're going to dive into the good fruits, but now we're scaring a little bit of everyone, but there is hope, so stay tuned.
There's hope because the thing is that they're stripping away all the goodness that nature provides. If you look at an orange versus an orange juice, you're not drinking the orange, you're drinking the sugar water of the orange because now, think about if you had one orange or think about if you had an apple. Could you eat 5 or 6 apples right now? No way. You can eat maybe one or maybe a little bit more than that. Now you're getting 5 apples or the juice of 5 oranges and now it's that, as you said, tsunami effect. You're dumping all this sugar and fructose into your bloodstream. And no fiber. And it goes right to the liver because when that happens, your liver has to stop. It's like all hands on deck because fructose is one, it's a toxin, Jorge Cruise. It's literally a toxin to the body and the body has to do whatever it can to neutralize that. And that's why, like you said, fruit is really not, we don't want to say it's bad because nature gives us things like fiber and the phytonutrients. Nutrients and the vitamins and the minerals. Because why is sugar so bad? Yeah, sugar depletes your minerals that you need to perform every single day, both mentally and physically. And glucose, it takes 28 molecules of magnesium to neutralize one molecule of glucose. See, guys? Yeah, fructose, it takes 58 molecules of magnesium to neutralize one molecule.
Is this in your book, Get Off Your Acid?
This is going to be actually my next book, which is about sugar.
Can you tease it or not yet? Not yet. We'll keep it vague, but it's coming. It's coming. Yes, we're halfway through.
We'll I'll be done writing it in, oh, December. Got a lot more work to do, but it's a couple more weeks. It's very exciting. And I know me and you both were addicted to sugar growing up, and that was—
you know, I was—
we're both overweight, or, or have not overweight, but heavier than we were now.
And it's not our fault because sugar does make us feel better. I mean, there is a reason that we're— we're not addicted to eating protein or fat necessarily. It's just sugar. I mean, that's what most people that I work with that are emotional eaters— I remember working with Jessica Simpson. I mean, she, when she was going through pregnancy and going through some difficult times in her life, and you know, we all, every woman, every man, I mean, I will sit down and you want to have a, you want to have some sugar, you know, you don't think of it that way, but you think of, I want that candy bar, or, oh, I want that orange juice, or, oh, I feel weak, so let me have more oranges juice, that is. And so what's great is there are fruits that you can enjoy, guys, but we want to enjoy the fruits that obviously are low sugar. High fiber, rich in minerals, vitamins, and maybe they have some bonuses like healthy fats. So let's talk about God's butter. I think that's amazing, and that's the avocado, you know, or guacamole, or aguacate as we say in Mexico. Very nice. The aguacate. But tell us, because I'm obsessed with avocado oil, but the avocado itself, I have, I try, I mean, when we go out, we're gonna have lunch a little later today.
I try to always have an avocado.
Always. I mean, I don't always do a whole avocado, but I can do it. And I feel like that's okay. Tell them why we love the avocado.
Avocado? Well, number one, we cannot be fearful of the fat because these are healthy fats, right? Yes, yes, yes. There's fats that heal and there's fats that kill. Oh yes, the one that heals, and this is one that you should be incorporating every day. You know, it's, it's this— it's loaded with all these healthy fats and minerals. Again, that's a key thing. It's the perfect food. You know, it's something that I eat every single morning, or when I'm doing cruise control fasting, I'll eat it for lunch. Yeah, yeah. And I love to throw in some extra virgin olive oils because you can't really get enough sea salt. And some sea salt—
well, not sea salt, I would use the, the red Yeah, exactly. Yeah, from Utah or whatever salt, but you can put salt on the avocado and it's the perfect way to start your day whenever you're breaking your fast.
And it's such a versatile fruit, right? Oh, I mean, you can use it for so many things. You can use it in avocado chocolate mousse. That's Kelly's favorite recipe in the book. Yeah, right. And your kids won't even know that it's in there.
What page is that on in the book for those that have your book?
Oh, you're challenging me. My wife would be able to call it out right now.
Call it out. Well, it's in the book.
It's in the recipe section.
Yes. Yes, and Get Off Your Acid is his book that has all these recipes, and Kelly did write the opening of that book. But, and she loves avocados, right? She loves them. Yeah, no, I do too. Every day. And I feel like we're so, um, misinformed that fat is bad. Now don't get me wrong, we do in our opinions, I think we've talked about this offline, but vegetable oils, we try to avoid corn oil, the inflammatory soybean oil. I mean, I mean, there's a list of oils we want to avoid, mainly all the vegetable oils, right?
Yeah, there's those pro-inflammatory omega-6 fats. So those are the ones that are inflammatory. So that's the soybean, the corn oil, and You got to also be careful when you guys are eating animal protein that's been fed with corn and soy because it's the same thing. It's those omega-6 fats. So that's why we have to get everything wild-caught, grass-fed, even fish. You can't— you got to really go for the— and know where the source is coming from.
So with the avocado being one of my favorites, what would be your second favorite fruit that we love? Is it lime? Lemon. Lemon.
Lemon. I love it because again, it's low sugar. And that's the difference between a lemon and an orange because they're both citric acid fruits. Yeah, yeah. But the difference is what happens once your body metabolizes those. So we don't care what that fruit does outside the body because they're both acids, right?
Yeah, yeah.
What we care about is what they do once you eat it. And because the lemon is low in sugar, it's high in minerals, just like orange is high in minerals, but lemons are low in sugar, oranges are high in sugar. The lemons become alkalizing or alkaline-forming to the body, where the orange becomes acid forming. So lemons are phenomenal. I put a slice of organic lemon in my water. We use them in recipes every single day. I'll put it in my water sometimes.
One of the things I learned in Malibu from Laird Hamilton, the pro surfer, we all know who Laird is and all that, and he wrote a Men's Journal article once talking about how he does the Himalayan salt or the sea salt, pink salt, you know, the healthy mineral salt with a squeeze of lemon, and he has that every morning, like 32 ounces of it. And I tend to do that, and it's so low in sugar it doesn't break a fast. The lemon. Or what do you think of limes? How would— how— when do you use a lime?
Limes are equally as good as lemon, you know, and it's good to switch it up every now and then because the way you're eating it, you just got to be careful of the enamel because these— the acid can corrode the enamel because acid is corrosive.
You don't want to suck on lemons. Exactly.
But limes are great, you know, it's just diversity. There's a salad dressing we make that has limes in it that we love.
So yeah, we switch it up. And my last fruit that I just thought I'd get your opinion on, because I, I tend to— it's not so much ketchup, but I love tomatoes because they're high in antioxidants, anti-cancer properties. Do you have any thoughts on that? Because I try to have a little tomato in some way, more in its natural form, in a salad, usually in a salad or salsa, right, with guacamole. I mean, the ultimate two fruits. But what are your thoughts on tomatoes? Tomatoes. I love tomatoes.
It's a high alkaline fruit. It gets a bad rap. A lot of people call it a nightshade vegetable, or it's really a fruit, but a lot of people will call it a vegetable. It is a fruit, yeah. You have to understand that it's really about how your body is with these specific foods. It's about your body's unique biochemistry, right? If you have a reaction to the tomato, there's probably something off with your microbiome. There's probably something off with your body's ability to break down, absorb, and assimilate the nutrients in the tomato. So I'm a huge fan of tomatoes. I'm Italian, I have to be. Uh, we use them every single day. I mean, there's nothing better than going to the farmer's market, getting some fresh tomatoes, even just slicing them up, throwing some extra virgin olive oil, some Redmond Real Salt. Yes. And just, if you buy that organic tomato, they're delicious. Like the heirloom ones? Yeah, they're juicy, you know, and then you add a little sea salt and olive oil, it's perfect. That's all you need to do.
Yeah, I've been hitting the farmer's markets here in New York on the weekends, and they're really good, they're good produce on the East Coast, you know. I haven't really lived in New York, you guys know I've been here for a while now, and I love it. And not that I miss California, which I do a little bit, but I mean, it's so good that every, I think every community has some farmer's markets. Markets, you know. And, and whether it's that or you're just going to Trader Joe's, I mean, try to get organic like we've always been saying. And don't be scared of these, of these fruits, you know, and know that these are going to help you stay healthy. They're going to be rich in the nutrients we want, from minerals to vitamins to hopefully more importantly keeping our inflammation low, and if anything, allowing us to feel our best. And I would say for anyone out there that is scared of fruit, don't be scared. Now I did want to mention one that I have on occasion, like at night before I break— before I end my fast, which is blueberries. Or raspberries, the berries. And I'll do it with— and I learned this from Kelly Ripa. You've seen her on this show with, uh, she likes that, that whipped cream that comes out in the can. It goes— you guys know the ones? Yeah, I almost know, uh, sugar in it. It's just, it's fat. But I'll do some whipped cream sometimes. And there's so many variations, even plant-based creams now, that you can do with berries. How are you with berries? I love berries.
They're beautiful. I call them brain berries, right? Because they're so good for brain health. Yes.
But also remember, they're a little bit higher up on the sugar scale.
They're moderate. So what I like to do if I have like a big bowl of berries, I'll throw in some coconut butter, some chopped mint. And when you throw in that little bit of a healthy fat, what's going to happen is it's going to slow down how those sugars get metabolized. And again, your body's not going to have any insulin spiking or any leptin issues. So it's just a way to help the body assimilate. There's going to be no issues with any gut problems, but it's just a safer way to do it. But I'm a big fan, but moderation, you don't want to be eating a ton of these things, but we give it to our kids all the time. It's a much healthier option for the kids, and it's something you want to really incorporate. Yeah, throw them into your smoothies, throw them into your salads.
Yep, yep. And they can be frozen too. I mean, that can be more of a treat. And I would say it's a little handful of that and, and some cream if you're gonna have that at night. And just make sure if you're doing cruise control fasting, it's within your 8-hour fasting window, because it will break your fast. So will whole avocados and other things like that. But I do use avocado oil. You— have you been— you guys been using that on occasion? Avocado oil, right? And that has no carbs or protein, so that you can use during your dressing window, but I use it more as a dressing.
It's also great to cook with because it holds a high smoke point, just like coconut oil does. Oh yeah.
So, and it's kind of weird, I don't think most people that I talk to— I mean, I know some of our clients that are very educated know that it's fruit, but I think we think of avocado oil as a vegetable or something weird, and it's not. So go after those avocados, enjoy the limes and lemons, have some tomatoes and a couple berries, the, the lower sugar ones. What are your— what do you know, the, the— I think, isn't it raspberries or blackberries, the, the darker pigmented ones?
Yeah, because they're higher, the pigment are higher in antioxidants. So you go for those rich, like, pink and dark blue colors. They have to withstand the elements when they're actually out there, you know, in nature growing.
So, so they're more resilient and lower in sugar. So, all right guys, well, that's that. And I hope— oh, I want to invite you guys this evening at 5:30 PM Pacific time, come out to jorgecruise.com and join me for a free week. Tonight I'll be doing a talk about this.
