#56 - EAT FIT: I CARB SWAP ROMAINE LETTUCE FOR TORTILLAS OR BREAD.
16 Jun 2020 · 18 min
In this solo episode of The Jorge Cruise Show, host Jorge Cruise introduces his "carb swap" method, urging listeners to replace high‑carbohydrate foods like tortillas, corn, flour, or bread with romaine lettuce. He frames belly‑fat reduction as the cornerstone of high‑performance living, linking a slimmer waist to better work, sleep, memory, and confidence. Cruise outlines his personal health regimen—intermittent fasting (16‑23 hours), 8‑minute interval‑training workouts, and a low‑calorie "flat‑belly meal" made from chia seeds, avocado oil, and unsweetened almond milk. He promotes his upcoming free online course, a weekly email report, and sponsors Navitas Organics and Primal Kitchen, offering discount codes. Throughout, he repeats an affirmation—"I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread"—and provides practical tips for implementing the swap at home and in restaurants, including freezing bread and requesting organic lettuce. The episode ends with a call to share the show, sign up for his Friday report, and engage with his community.

Happy Tuesday! It is June 16th. How is your day going? Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. I'm Jorge Cruise, and this is the show for high performance living for people who don't have time. Basically, I've dedicated my entire career to helping people lower what is known as their waist circumference. And if you can lower your waist circumference, otherwise known as belly fat, you improve everything. You work better, you reduce pain, you improve your memory. You will even sleep better, and you may feel a little sexy, which will give you that spark of confidence. And that's really what this podcast is all about. It's about helping you get to that level of performance where you don't have belly fat stopping you. Because I'll tell you, I've been doing this for over 25 years, and it is the number one thing every celebrity I've worked with, every online client hates, and what every— almost every one of my books was— has been dedicated to. So I'm super excited to hear right now. Today we're going to be talking about one of my favorite topics that I came up with about 10 years ago called carb swaps. We're going to talk about, for those of you who love carbs, believe me, I do too, we're going to talk about how to swap out tortillas, corn or flour, or bread for something even better. I'll let you hang for a minute because the show is brought to you by my website, jorgecruise.com. And I just want to mention this, that every year I do a survey, and this year we're doing it this month, the month of June, and I would love to get your feedback on what you want me to talk about here on the show, what kind of things you want me to do on television, or what kind of things you'd like me to possibly write about in future books. I listen, and it's like a compass to me to know which direction to go in and what you're interested in. I know today's show is gonna be great because you love carb swaps, I sure do. And a lot of times I can kind of guess what you're thinking, but I always like to double-check. So if you're interested in that, please head on over to my website, it's jorgecruise.com, J-O-R-G-E, cruise.com. And as my thank you for filling out my survey, it takes about 5 minutes, it's top of the page. You just literally go to the website and you'll see a link at the top. It'll say Belly Fat Cure, um, because what you get as my thank you is my new online course coming out in July about how to cure belly fat using, uh, 8 minutes of exercise, interval training that you can do at home. It's all new. You're going to love it, and it's free. It's over $100 value if you head on over to JorgeCruise.com. Get that today. We're also brought to you by Navitas Organics. Navitas are my friends. They are my passion. They are how I cheat my fast. And, uh, we're not talking about fasting today necessarily. We're going to talk about carb swaps, what to eat while you're eating. But when I'm not eating, for, uh, for me, 20 hours. Some of my celebs do 16 hours. Most of them do 16 to 20. Some sometimes a little bit more, but when it's time to eat, we know what to do, we're gonna talk about that today, but what do you do to hold off that hunger? Well, I use organic chia seeds from Navitas to create flat belly meals that basically are 3 tablespoons of organic chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of avocado oil and 8 ounces of unsweetened almond milk. You stir it, don't blend it, and it literally becomes like a smoothie. You can add stevia or monk fruit which will add sweetness without calories, without sugar calories, won't break your fast, and you'll be able to fast longer. It's a great shortcut. Some of my clients do 2 a day, you know, one midday, one in the morning, and then you have one proper meal at night, uh, and we're gonna talk about that, uh, today. But, uh, it's easy. And so head on over to navitasorganics.com because they're going to give us 30% off your entire superfood order Whether it's chia seeds or wheatgrass or maca root, which is good for energy, you'll get it all off. It's a special offer just for our listeners. Again, it's Navitas with an S, Navitas, N-A-V-I-T-A-S, Organixx with an S, O-R-G-A-N-I-X-X.com/Cruise, C-R-U-I-S-E, and use the code Cruise at checkout, my last name, to get 30% off your entire order. We're also brought to you by Primal Kitchen. I love Primal Kitchen. My mentor Mark Sisson, who's I'm 67 years young. I created this company a few years back. It's based on avocado oil. I use that part of the Flat Belly Meals, and it will give you an edge in, uh, in age prevention, hunger control. Avocado oil, in a nutshell, is my favorite oil on Earth because it's anti-inflammatory. It tastes amazing, doesn't have a weird taste, and you can use it everywhere. And they're giving us a free Chipotle lemon mayo made with avocado oil, without soybean oil or corn oil. A lot of mayos are made with soybean oil, which are incredibly inflammatory. They're just cheap to make, so that's why they use them. Avocado oil is not, and they're giving us a free chipotle lemon mayo when you order something from their site direct at primalkitchen.com/jorgecruise. So check that out. And on today's show, we're going to be talking about carb swaps. So I'll read you the affirmation, we'll get into the show. It says, I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread. So let's get started and start talking about this right now. It's a fact, 91% of us have a dangerous amount of belly fat, and it isn't just unsightly. When you have too much belly fat, you're more likely to suffer from aches and pains, low energy, memory loss, and poor sleep, which prevents you from performing your best at work, spending true quality time with your loved ones, and simply enjoying life. The good news is that you can cure belly fat and immediately start to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, and sleep better using simple shortcuts I've gathered. Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise, and I'm known as the 8-Minute Life Strategist to the world's busiest celebrities. I've been a fitness, nutrition, and high-performance living strategist for over 25 years, and you may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, President Clinton, Tyra Banks, Dr. Oz, Tony Robbins, or even Steve Harvey. My passion to find the best science-backed fitness shortcuts has allowed me to write over 30 books and become a multiple New York Times bestselling author with over 9 million books in print. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. Well, it's Tuesday and a cloudy morning here in San Diego. But the sun is out. I hope it's coming out. I've been enjoying the sun. It feels like summer's here, even though we got a couple more days away till the summer solstice, I think is what it's called. So hopefully you're having some good weather and you're staying well, even though COVID-19 is still out there. I think things are returning to normal and obviously 10 feet social distance, maybe 9 feet, and masks everywhere. But I think we can do that. And I hope you're well. And I really am excited for today's show, because if you want to bolster immunity because of COVID-19, or you want to lose belly fat, what I'm about to share with you will help you do both. Because I'll tell you, part of my life's work, as you know, is to help people lower their waist circumference, get rid of belly fat, has been really understanding what causes us to keep and hold on to fat on our bellies, visceral fat being the most dangerous. Uh, we talked about that with Dr. Oz on Friday of last week. And if you want to get rid of belly fat right now, I'll tell you, sugar from carbohydrates is one of the things that not only breaks a fast but gets packed away into belly fat almost immediately, unless you are a super competitive athlete or something of that nature. And a lot of us aren't. I sure am not. I mean, I may exercise throughout the day, you know, I start off with my 8-minute belly fat curing kind of workout workout with my clients online. It's interval training. We've talked about that, we talked about it yesterday, and intervals are wonderful. But, uh, you know, combine that with, uh, fasting, you got a great package there where you really can lose up to a pound of belly fat a day. But then what the heck do you eat when it's time to eat? Whether you're eating one meal like what I do every day— I eat around 3 o'clock, one meal, because I fast for, gosh, 22 hours, about 23 hours— or you're doing 16 hours, you know, where you're not when you're not eating, and then it's time to eat, and you have an 8-hour window, uh, or 6-hour, whatever it is you're doing. What the heck do you eat? Well, of course you want healthy proteins, you want healthy fats, and you can have healthy carbs. But most carbohydrates that come from corn tortillas or flour tortillas or bread— flour, wheat, all that— not only do they have concerns because they're carbohydrates and starchy, But here's the thing, they all get converted to sugar. And if you want to really see some results this summer, you got to cut out the sugar. And even though these may be sugar-free, they turn into sugar. The molecules break down the carbohydrates, these complex carbohydrates break down. As people think, oh, whole wheat bread is better than regular white bread, and corn tortillas are better than white flour tortillas, so I'm going to do that, or I'll do whole wheat flour tortillas or cassava root tortillas. I used to do those Loved the cassava root, but honestly, it's all carbs. You know, it may not have gluten. Corn doesn't have gluten, neither does cassava flour, wheat, rye, barley. We want to avoid all that because they have gluten. But the honest truth, carbs are carbs and they turn into sugar. So I hate to, to sadden our day here, but here's the good thing: we can swap it. And that's why I'm excited for a carb swap, uh, for romaine lettuce. You may be thinking, oh, romaine lettuce. Well, I do this often. I almost do it daily. I do it in place of bread if I'm making a little sandwich. I use it in place of tortillas because I grew up in a Mexican Latin kind of family and tortillas were everywhere. And it works great. And you really get to focus in on what's in the sandwich or what's in the tortilla and make that delicious, the protein, the fats, the seasoning. So the affirmation today is It's simple, I'm gonna say it 3 times. I want you to say it 3 times with me and then we'll talk about this a little bit more into the show so you get how to do this. So here's what I want you to hear right now, listen to it, I'm gonna say it 3 times. It's simple, it says, "I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread." I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread. I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread. They may be thinking, bread, really? Romaine lettuce, that's not bread. I want a loaf of bread. Well, if you have a loaf of bread, you're gonna have a loaf of belly fat. I promise you, the people that I've interviewed over my 20-some years of talking to people to write books for over 20 years now, I feel like none of them eat bread. I mean, they do on special occasion, they'll have some bread, you know, it has to be some really good bread. And I still do that on occasion, but you know, 80% of the time you want to be clean. And by carb swapping, you're going to do that. So let's do this together. Take a deep breath in. Hopefully you're in front of a big mirror. Take a deep breath in and say the following with me: I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread. I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread. One last time, deep breath in, stand tall. I carb swap romaine lettuce for tortillas or bread. Now, what is a carb swap? It's basically knowing that we're still gonna eat carbohydrates, and yes, lettuce, romaine lettuce is a carbohydrate, all vegetables are. All fruits are, but it's a smarter one. It's higher in fiber, it's higher in water content, it has no starchy carbohydrate, it's almost zero calories. Romaine lettuce, it's green, so it has antioxidants in it, it has vitamins in it. I'm not going to say it's got a lot in it because it's really almost no calories, but it will do the trick to create kind of a mimic, the illusion of eating bread or tortillas. And I'll give you an example of how I do this. So simple. I had tacos yesterday. I went on a hike and took some food with me in my backpack. I had some really great steak, some guacamole, uh, really just avocados, but I sliced it up with some tomatoes, onions, garlic, pepper, salt. So I was like my little side condiment thing. I brought some of my Primal Kitchen mayo, uh, the chipotle one I love. That you guys are hopefully going to try. And literally, I had some lettuce, or I had some tomatoes, and then I just grabbed a little Ziploc bag and had my romaine lettuce in the Ziploc bag, kind of like a bag of bread, you know. Hey, what, 100 years ago, or if Jesus had bread at the Last Supper, you know, it didn't come in a bag. But we bag it so it's more modern and convenient. Just get some nice big Ziploc bags, and, you know, I take a whole, a whole a whole bunch of leaves with me, probably 12 leaves with me, and I turned them into tortillas just in my head. But they actually work really good to hold the food in there, to give you even a little crunch that you're not expecting, and it's delicious. And if it's not tortillas it replaces, if it's, if it's a sandwich, you can do it with turkey, you can do it with ham, you can do it with cheese in there. I've done it as a burger replacement. You know, you can lettuce wrap whether it's Shake Shack, if you're going to Shake Shack, or if you're in California, In-N-Out, or even McDonald's will do this. Oh yes, I've done it in New York, I've done it in Malibu. Yes, Malibu has a McDonald's. It's by Nobu, but it's very elegant McDonald's. But we've got it everywhere, and you can make this simple swap starting right now. And that is my invitation, or shall I say challenge to you, is to do this, because you're going to see a huge shift in your waist circumference if you just do this one thing. One swap, and literally take the bread you have in your refrigerator and put it in your freezer. Freeze it, put it on ice, and put it away. And go to the store and lettuce, romaine lettuce is inexpensive. You can get organic at Trader Joe's, Costco, anywhere. Get the organic. Organic is always gonna be better. No pesticides, you don't want all that stuff. And make the swap happen. It is so simple. It works, it's easy. You can do it at any restaurant from a fancy McDonald's in Malibu to the Nobu across the street, which is where the Kardashians have a meal, and it's a fun place to celebrity watch in LA, but I've done this at Nobu New York. You can do it anywhere. It doesn't matter the restaurant. You're paying for the meal. Ask them to swap out the bread for romaine lettuce. Every restaurant has romaine lettuce. And ask if it's organic, and if they have it, say, "Please, I would love organic." Do your best. And obviously the protein should be organic too, and grass-fed, or without hormones and all that, but hey, do your best. That's the intention here. 80% of the time, do your best. So I hope this inspires you to eat healthier today, to eat fit. That's what this is all about. And my, my question— or not question, my, my request of you is to please share today's show with at least 3 friends that are struggling to lose weight. And they're probably eating healthy, whole wheat bread and all. Maybe they're fasting, maybe they're doing intervals, but they still can't do it because, you know, they're eating bread. So let's put the bread away, freeze it, uh, put it on ice, literally, like, uh, like Captain America, right? Put it, put it on ice. If you guys have seen the Marvel comic movie, he was on ice for many years. Uh, now I'm, I'm digressing, or I'm off, I'm off course here. But let me just say this, guys, go out there, have a great Tuesday. I'll be back tomorrow. I hope you like this carb swap. I'll do more of them. Uh, please let me know how you like the show. Give us 5 stars, share it with a few people, at least 3, share it with loved ones, share it on your social feed, Facebook, Instagram, take a screenshot, go to JorgeCruise.com, get the screen art, the screensaver for today's affirmation, and do this throughout the day and listen to it as often as you need so you stay smart and you cut down those carbs, which cuts down the sugar, which will cut down your belly fat. All right, peace and purpose. Have a great Tuesday. I'll talk to you soon. I want to invite you to join my Jorge Cruise Report.
