#6 - Which Foods You Can Eat That Will Improve a Grown-ups Brain
29 Oct 2019 · 20 min
In this October 28, 2019 episode of the Jorge Cruise Podcast, host Jorge Cruise welcomes Dr. Daryl Joffre, author of Get Off Your Acid, to discuss how to navigate Halloween and the upcoming holiday season without breaking intermittent fasting protocols or compromising health. They share practical strategies such as using sugar‑free sweeteners (stevia, monk fruit, xylitol, erythritol) and avoiding artificial sweeteners (sucralose, Splenda, aspartame). The conversation highlights specific low‑carb, brain‑supporting recipes—including pumpkin chia pudding, coconut chia pudding, and peppermint fat bombs—explaining why chia seeds pass through the digestive system without breaking a fast. They emphasize mindset tactics like anticipating holiday challenges, mastering the present moment, and using the mantra “Your now becomes your next step.” The episode also promotes Dr. Joffre’s new plant‑based Organic Deli Protein (hemp, sacha inchi, pea protein with coconut oil, maca, Himalayan salt, turmeric) and provides purchase links. Throughout, they intersperse personal anecdotes, shout‑outs to celebrity clients, and a call‑to‑action for a live cheat‑meal session. The overall message is that with moderation, smart sweetener choices, and proactive planning, listeners can enjoy Halloween treats and the holiday season while maintaining fasting, weight, and brain health.

Hi, I'm Jorge Cruise, number one New York Times bestselling author and celebrity trainer, and I want to welcome you to the all-new Jorge Cruise Podcast. Every week I'll bring you the shortcuts to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, garden more, and even sleep better. It's not just about intermittent fasting or getting a flat belly. My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. Hey everyone, it's Jorge Cruise and welcome to the podcast. It is, uh, I can't even believe this, October 28th. It is the week of Halloween, one of my favorite times to have fun and kind of be a kid again and get dressed up. I, I try to get dressed up, and at my side here is, is my guest co-host, and he's amazing. He's the guy in New York that is like family to me. He is the author of Get Off Your Acid. He is a bit of a nutritionist to the stars and has an incredible office here in the Upper East Side. I'm still getting the lay of the land. You guys know I'm more California, but he and I met years ago in Malibu, and I'm just so honored that Dr. Joffre's here. He prefers though not Dr. Joffre, but Dr. Daryl. But tell them a little bit where we're at at your office here on the Upper East Side, right?
Yeah, Phil, thank you so much. Such a pleasure to be here. And you are a transplanted New Yorker. You are a New Yorker now.
I love the city, and he and his wife have kind of given me the family feel here in New York. Because, you know, New York's a big city. You've been here 19 years, right?
19 years.
So tell them where at your office— we've talked about this a lot, so you guys are probably bored, but I'm here. We love filming here at your office, and it's great because I feel like this is, this is the Malibu of New York, your office, right? Is that okay to say?
Totally. I love Malibu. Because, you know, the first time we met was in Malibu.
Yeah, you know how healthy everyone is there, and I know New York is healthy, but not everyone is. And, you know, you've been working with some big-name people for years now, and I feel so honored to have you here as co-host. Co-host because I feel like together we're better. And we're going to be talking today about my favorite art. Well, I love Halloween. You've got kids. Oh, it's— I mean, do you dress up or not? I haven't asked.
Uh, I might be dressing up. Uh, we'll see. But my son is going to be a zombie. He's 5, Brayden.
Another Brayden.
Shout out to Brayden. And Aaliyah, I think she's gonna be a, uh—
She decided?
She's gonna be a strawberry, maybe. Oh no, no, I'm sorry, she could be an avocado. We got her 2 costumes because at age 2 you never know what they're gonna like you for. Yeah, yeah. But she's an avocado. The strawberry was the backup. Oh, we talked about avocado. Healthy fats. Healthy fats.
We talked about it last Monday.
God's butter. She's gonna be God's butter. Oh my gosh. I love this time of year. Fall in New York City.
Tell them. Tease them.
It's just beautiful. It's beautiful. It's just such an amazing time. It's like the precursor to the holidays. It's the most incredible weather and it's just a really special time.
Well, and I think it's such an appropriate time because the holidays literally in my head, I know Thanksgiving next month is the big holiday. But when you think of Halloween, I mean, I think about, all right, not that I go trick-or-treating with my sons anymore, they're in California and they're teenagers, they're too old, they're too cool for that. They go to parties and all that. But you know, whether you have kids, grandkids, or you're just going to an adult Halloween party, you know, I think what we wanna talk about, pardon me as I'm coughing here, but we're gonna talk about how to kind of survive Halloween without breaking our fast. And also, I mean, whatever we share here, obviously you can use throughout the holidays because I feel like how to survive the holidays is an important topic, uh, whether it's Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, it's all coming up. I mean, I can't believe it's the holidays, but we're going to be talking about what to do. And, and we've been trying to brainstorm the best ways to kind of enjoy truly Halloween, uh, without the sugar, without breaking your fast at all possible. And we were talking about recipes, and you know, for me, if it's not a recipe, you know, I'll do candy sometimes that have 'Cause I have a little sweet tooth, you know, and I like Xylitol candies 'cause they don't break my fast. And I've used Spree— Spry, pardon me, Spry for a while, the gums and the mints and all that. But I love what you were mentioning because you actually like certain things that you've been making. And what's on your list? Share with everyone what we were talking about.
Well, I've been doing a lot of chia puddings this time of year, especially I love like pumpkin is the best this time of year. So we made an awesome pumpkin chia pudding. Yep. Which is one of my favorites. And you know, the chia seeds, it's— you talk about all the time, it's one of your favorites.
It's the ultimate cheat meal, guys. And so, uh, we're paying kind of tribute to the chia seed because when you guys add, you know, unsweetened almond milk— or do you do almond milk or coconut milk?
I like coconut milk a little bit better just because it's a little bit healthier.
Yeah, so, uh, coconut milk, hopefully unsweetened, whether it's vanilla or has a little flavor, you know, when add a little stevia, monk fruit, or whatever. We've talked about that in past shows. But I feel like what people don't realize is that chia seeds pass right through you, so you have amazing healthy digestion, you know, to keep it PG-13. We don't need to talk about poop, but there I said it. Healthy digestion is important, and when that goes through you, I mean, it doesn't break your fast. So I know that's one of my go-tos. I mean, when I was on with Kelly and Mark, Ryan wasn't there, she was obsessed with chia seeds. And I don't know, did she get that from you originally, or who?
Yes, she did. Her two favorite recipes in the book Get Off Your Acid is the avocado chocolate mousse, but the pumpkin chia pudding, or the book has the coconut chia pudding, which is Yeah, so it's, uh, it's, it's a favorite.
And Dr. Darrell's book is Get Off Your Ass, you guys. You got to pick it up because it is a go-to book. And Kelly, I mean, just this a couple weeks ago, right, she was talking about you. She comes to your office, and we'll give you a shout out to— obviously, if people want to come in, if you're New York guys, because I have a lot of New York people, and New York's a big city, and I feel like you're, you're this little Malibu mecca here in New York, kind of a bubble of health. You know, you come in here and you leave feeling younger, looking better, standing taller. And still can have things like, and I wanna mention, you have a new creamy chocolate organic protein. We're gonna talk about that, made with coconut oil. But let's talk about the Halloween, it's here, I mean literally.
Well, I gotta tell you, Jorge, we made something the other day.
Tell us.
From Cruise Control that my son loved.
What?
It was your peppermint fat bombs. Oh yes. Which I think is great for this time of year anyway. He loves peppermint, anything mint he loves.
Yeah, yeah.
But I'm telling you, they went crazy for it. We did too, of course, but he went crazy for those. So these like fat bombs are amazing, but that was one of my favorite recipes.
You know, and you can have that while you're fasting, guys. The recipes in the book— I don't remember what page. Do you remember?
Uh, I have your book right here actually.
Look, hold on, we have it in there.
And I remember page 153.
153, guys, if you have the Cruise Control book.
Oh, you got coconut oil, your favorite sweetener, peppermint, cacao.
Yep.
And then, uh, yeah, I mean, it's very easy to make.
No, it's a tossed together meal. None of this stuff is complicated. And I think it's so yummy.
I mean, it's You feel like you're cheating when you have these things, 'cause they taste so good.
Right, and the chia seeds as well, they're so substantial, and they turn off hunger, won't break your fast. And I feel like at Halloween, you know, people, I feel like, you know, I was talking to Dorinda Medley, right, just this last week, and she always talks to me about reality. She's a very genuine person. You guys know her from the New York, from the Real New York Housewives, or the Real Housewives of New York. And she and I have been working all this last month together, and Sonja Morgan as well. Shout out to both of those beautiful ladies. And I feel like, you know, The holidays sometimes feel like they're unsurvivable, and sometimes we just say screw it. I hate to, pardon my French, but we say fuck it. I don't wanna say it, but I said it. Sometimes we feel that way. We're stressed out and we just say screw it, I'll do it in January. So I feel like some of us just take a pass for the next 3 months, literally from October through January, and just don't care about our health. And I feel like, can you motivate us from your perspective on, how we don't have to give up even though it's Halloween. I mean, yes, there's candy everywhere, but we can stay sweet without the sugar. You guys should re-listen to our podcast that we did a couple weeks ago. I think it was on the 14th of October, talking about sugars that don't cause belly fat. Because remember what we talked about? And we talked about, uh, lohan, monk fruit, stevia, the, uh, the sugar alcohols. But tell them, I mean, because you always inspire me, and that's why I love that we're together, you know. I feel like Yes, it's the holidays, but we don't have to say screw it, you know, or just I'll pass on it, you know, to be more elegant here. But certain people, you've met these people, you know, they say screw it and they just start drinking and eating and holiday parties. It's—
and it becomes a vicious cycle and you gain those freshman 15 pounds.
But we're not freshmen anymore, right? And 15 pounds is a lot. And then you got more work to do in January. What's your motivation when you work with someone that's well known without mentioning names unless you want, of course, to keep people motivated, especially this week, it's Halloween. People are getting dressed up and they're going to maybe have an extra cocktail, but what's our motivation from your perspective?
Well, it's interesting you said 3 months. That's 1/4 of your life because people that tend to do it, they do it every year. So that's a lot of time and it just becomes this vicious cycle. So, you know, our good friend Tony Robbins, he talks about anticipation. You know that this is about to happen, everyone. It starts with Halloween. It turns into Thanksgiving and then the holiday parties and then it's Christmas and Hanukkah and then all of a sudden it's New Year's and then boom, January 1st comes, right? Most people— yeah, exactly.
What happened?
I feel sick, I feel bloated, I'm in bed, I don't want to do anything. And they're just— they lose their motivation to be who they really are. So we know that this is the road ahead. So start now. Yes, you have to anticipate. The people who anticipate are going to be the ones who are going to succeed through the holidays. Yes. And so my motto, Jorge—
I'm excited. You're getting me all pumped up. Great. Listen, listen, guys.
How we both live our life is it's not deprivation. You can enjoy your holidays. It's about moderation. We have to throw in these little hacks that we talk about so that we can curb our cravings for sugar. All right, we're not saying that you don't have, that you, that, I mean, we're giving you permission to have a little bit of sugar. But again, moderation. But if you're having things like these healthy minerals, like the Redmond salt we talked about a while back.
Put that in our water in the morning.
The coconut oil, the fat bombs like we made from your book.— then we're not going to crave that. So if I'm going to have a dinner with someone, or if I'm going to be going to a holiday party—
it's okay to have a glass of wine. We've had wine. I mean, you and I, we love a good wine. And during our eating window for 8 hours, you can eat carbs. You know, we want to minimize— what we talked about this a couple shows ago, remember? We talked about the evil corn syrup, and we want to avoid those things and the artificial sweeteners. Because I think here's the one thing I think most people think is is better than nothing. It's just eat sugar-free candies. I'm not saying they're all bad. Some of them, if they're made with the right natural sugars, they're harder to find. You can Google them. They're out there. I love Spry. A lot of them are made with either the pink packet, the yellow packet, or the blue packet, and you guys know what we're talking about. These— Cancer. Talk to them a little bit.
I hate to say it's cancer in a packet. These things are neurotoxins. We talked about how dangerous they are to your body. They don't make you lose weight either. They will add on belly fat.
Well, because you never feel satiated, right? Right. More and they trick your brain. Yeah, so you want to avoid those artificial sweeteners. We're not saying go out there and get sugar-free candies that are made with artificial sweeteners. And you know, whether it's sucralose, which is the pink one, I think, right? The yellow is Splenda. Splenda, yeah. And then the blue one, aspartame, right? Or NutraSweet. They're all bad.
Stay away from them. Don't go— I mean, avoid them like the plague because they are, they're, they're really bad.
But the good thing is, I mean, we were, we were looking at Amazon. There's a lot of great products out there, but you don't have to spend a lot of money on, on healthy candies. I mean, they're out there if you can find them with the ones that we do like. Your favorite tends to be more stevia, monk fruit, right? And they're my favorite too.
Yeah, I like those two the best.
Yeah, I love those. And then on occasion I'll do the candies that have the xylitol or the erythritol. But everything in moderation, like you said. And then while you're eating during the holidays, and maybe Thanksgiving is a bigger issue, and we'll do shows for November, because that's an important time. We want to make sure that we can enjoy it and hopefully make it an anti-inflammatory feast, right? With, has, you know, has whatever it is you're doing, whether it's traditional turkey or vegan type options, There's all sorts of great plant-based proteins. We'll be talking about that in November, but for this week, let's create a mantra for everyone listening. What do you think? Where we can inspire them to know that this week we're gonna have some fun, we're gonna get maybe dressed up, we're gonna have some delicious treats, whether they're fat bombs, chia seed puddings. What's the motto? What would you suggest as an affirmation we can tell people that, you know, the one I love from Malibu is from Brooke, Brooke Burke. I stole her motto about how capable, we are, that we are capable. And I feel like at this time of year, maybe it's because it's getting darker sooner and colder, we feel less motivated, right? And so we forget how capable we are and we think, ah, screw it again, and we start overeating sugars, and it's the holidays and it's cold, and we justify it, right? What's a simple phrase we could share with people to inspire?
Uh, I don't know if it's a phrase, but for me it's, it's how I start my day.
Tell us.
I think it's It's so important that you win that first hour, right? And I love— Jim Kwik talks about this. He says if you win the first hour, you're going to win the rest of the day.
Oh, I love— Jim Kwik is great. He's a memory expert, right?
Yeah, he's phenomenal. So I think you have to really focus on when you get up, what is your day going to look like? Really plan your day. Plan what you're going to eat. Plan your exercise. Schedule these things in because the holidays are insane.
Oh my gosh.
We have a million different things that are going on, and what tends to happen with so many people is that The good food and the good exercise takes the bad tea, and then never, as you said, becomes I'll do this tomorrow. And that's the addiction mindset. I'll do this tomorrow, I'll wait till tomorrow. But yeah, no, it's about the present moment. It's about that power of now, all right? Present time consciousness. Do everything in this moment because your now becomes your next step, and your now becomes your future.
Say that again. That's the mantra.
Your now becomes your, your next step, guys.
I, I, that's so powerful. Your now becomes your next step.
You're now. Master the now, master the moment.
Ooh, you're getting steep on me.
But it's true though, right?
Oh, 100%.
What are we doing right now? We're drinking, we're hydrating, we're drinking green juice.
Can we give a plug to, tell them about your new chocolate thing, because I'm obsessed with it. We're literally here at his office. Tell them where we're at first, Fungimula shout out so they know where you're at. I always like to do that.
Welcome to the Batcave, the Health Avengers are here, as Jorge calls it.
No, and this is where everyone from Kelly Ripa, tell them some of the names of the people we've talked about, but this is where they come, they really come, and you allow, I mean, you don't have to be a celebrity to come here. This isn't a celebrity center, right? But obviously they do come here. But where are we in New York? Tell everyone, and then obviously tell them what you have in your hand there.
We're at 1020 Park Ave. It's between 85th and 86th, the Upper East Side. And yeah, yeah, it's an amazing—
gorgeous here, by the way.
Yeah, it's an amazing place. You know, Kelly, as you talked about, and the other Kelly, which is Kelly Dodd from the, uh, the Real Housewives of Orange County, was in a few weeks ago. And our good friend Dorinda, who's just—
we—
Mr. Seacrest, Ryan Seacrest, and Mario and Courtney Lopez. Yes, they come Yeah, they all come. They're great people. Katherine Hahn and—
Oh, you've got the best people here. So, but tell them you've got something else that's the best.
And it's everybody. This is a family office. We love to take care of kids. But yeah, I love this new plant-based protein that we just launched with. It's called Organic Deli Protein. And it's awesome because we have the 3 core alkaline proteins, which is hemp, which is a really great fat. It's great for the brain. We have Sacha Inchi, which is a Peruvian superfood seed.
Oh, I love Sacha Inchi, yes.
And then we have pea protein. But the key thing, Jorge, is that we add the coconut oil because the coconut oil allows your body to become a fat-burning machine. It just really helps that body deal with the protein.
Amazing.
And then we added in recently, we added in some maca powder, which is great for hormones, you know, that's great for libido, some Himalayan salt, some cinnamon, some turmeric for inflammation, there's sprouts. So it's just, it tastes great and it's plant-based and it's just really good as a, uh, a great replacement in the morning.
I mean, I think this could be a great little Halloween, uh, bonus too that people can have during their eating window because it's super delicious and the, the macros are perfect and it's the best quality. I mean, it really can be a meal replacement. It is, you know. I mean, if you're in a rush, try a shake. And if they want to get this online, is it on Amazon or is it just at your site right now?
It's on Amazon and it's also at getoffyouracid.com.
Check it out, guys. And I know Dorinda has this at her house when I'm over there. She's always enjoying this and I love it, guys.
And I think she's a health warrior, isn't she?
Oh my gosh, she is Well, you know, she used to be an aerobics instructor, so she's got it.
That's great. Yeah, '80s style.
Oh my gosh, November 16th, guys, she's doing a big event. I'm going to be coming. You need to come too. We're going to put on our leg warmers. It's all a tribute to Jane Fonda and the '80s and aerobics. And, uh, shout out to Dorinda. She's amazing, but she is a warrior. And but so are all our clients, I feel like, and so are you guys. And I think take advantage of this podcast and know that you're capable And then tell them what you said about the power of now, but say it again.
The power of now is your next steps.
I think we should leave on that note, guys. So, and speaking of that, join me tonight, 5:30 PM Pacific time. I'm gonna be at jorgecruise.com. We have a meeting tonight. We're gonna be talking about a cheat meal that I love made from caramel. But again, it's all chia seed, and we're gonna be doing that tonight. We're gonna talk a little more about the holidays and all that. I would love to invite you tonight. I don't know if you're available, but we may do that. But if not, guys, we'll see you next Monday, of course. But please share the podcast with as many family and loved ones. And then obviously, um, you know where to find us on social. I'm @JorgeCruise.
Tell them your social as well, uh, @GetOffYourAcid.
And is— there it is, guys. All right, and have fun Halloween. Enjoy.
Happy Halloween.
Yeah, no, absolutely. And don't feel bad. You can have your wine, you can have your drinks, just don't overdo the sugar. Try to Avoid the sugar, avoid the artificial.
Have some minerals, very important.
Yeah, yeah. And if you have cruise control, I think you said page 153.
153.
I actually remember the page number.
Peppermint fat bombs, make them and your kids will love them. Get your kids on this stuff and these recipes, they're amazing.
Super easy to make, guys, alright? Have a great Halloween, alright guys? Trick or treat, we'll see you next Monday.
Take care.
Bye, guys.
