#68 - EAT FIT: I BREAK MY FAST WITH CLEAN FOODS.
8 Jul 2020 · 26 min
In this solo episode of The Jorge Cruise Show, host Jorge Cruise guides listeners through day three of his 19‑day challenge, focusing on how to break an intermittent fast with “clean” foods. He frames his recommendations in an ancestral‑health perspective, emphasizing three macronutrients—clean protein, healthy fats, and low‑toxicity carbohydrates. Specific protein sources include grass‑fed beef, sardines, chicken, eggs (omega‑3 enriched), and collagen from bone broth, with brief notes on plant‑based options. For fats, he advocates avocado oil, grass‑fed butter, beef tallow, and coconut oil while warning against seed/vegetable oils such as canola and soybean. Carbohydrate guidance follows an 80/20 rule: most days prioritize low‑sugar vegetables and fruits (lettuce, squash, cucumbers, berries, avocado) and limit processed grains, tortillas, and high‑glycemic carbs, reserving treats like pizza or wine for about 20% of meals. He also mentions red‑light therapy (Joovv) for mood and metabolism, and promotes his website, a 4‑minute survey that unlocks a free Belly‑Factor course, and a text‑based “Fit Family” community. Sponsors Primal Kitchen and Joovv are highlighted with discount offers. The episode blends instructional nutrition advice, personal anecdotes, promotional calls‑to‑action, and motivational affirmations (“I break my fast with clean foods”).

And so, and a lot of the clients I work with are celebrities and they don't have time, but I can tell you, all my readers of books, all my online clients don't have time either. I'm thrilled you're here. This is day 3 of our 19-day challenge if you're one of my online clients. So welcome. If you're not one of my online clients, hopefully you're following along with the show because on Monday we talked about really the first key to improving your health, which is hydration. Yesterday we talked about intermittent fasting, and we talked about really about understanding how intermittent fasting is a tool to improve health. It is one of my favorite companies, not just because it was founded by my nutrition mentor Mark Sisson, but, and Mark Sisson is 67 years young and is in phenomenal shape. He's been that way his whole life. And most people at age 50 give up, and I'm 49, and I can tell you his encouragement over the last almost 17 years has given me so much insight. And he's created this company just a couple years ago, less than 10 years ago, called Primal Kitchen that makes the premier salad dressings and mayonnaise made with avocado oil. And avocado oil is anti-inflammatory. Most of these products are made with canola oil or soybean oil, which is inflammatory. So be careful about that stuff., and he has made some of the most delicious dressings. He also just sells avocado oil, and he's giving all of us— his, his primalkitchen.com is giving us a free chipotle lemon mayonnaise made with avocado oil for free on checkout. Joovv is how I start my morning at 4:30. It's pretty early when I'm up, and I click this on. It's red red light therapy. And I love red light therapy because it does so many things both physically and emotionally for me. I'm the kind of guy back in the day that I was an emotional eater. I would get panic attacks and food was my, my comforter, you know, emotional eating. A lot of us do that in the past. And if you do that now, I get it because I was overweight 40 pounds. And you know, you've seen my before and afters I posted yesterday on Instagram. I at least posted once a week so you guys remember that as much as I may be fit today, I wasn't always there. I was an emotional eater. And for me, what has helped me gain control of how I feel is this red light therapy, because it gives you the, the feeling of a beautiful sunrise in Hawaii or a beautiful sunset. And it's this magic light. You've heard of the magic light, and literally, it's not magic. It has scientifically been shown to improve your mood, seasonal mood disorder. It's also been shown to improve skin texture. It helps people with issues, with all sorts of issues in skin. It helps improve collagen. It helps improve metabolism. I live by this red light. I love it. It feels good. It's a warm light too, and you can use it in the morning, you can use it at night. I light up my office with it, I light up my house with it, and it's fun and it's beautiful. So check out Joove. I'm going to give you the website because it's kind of an odd spelling, but it's not too difficult to spell. It's spelled j-o-o-v-e.com/jorge. And if you go to their site, order any one of their lights, they have money-back guarantee, but you'll get a free gift on checkout if you use that forward slash Jorge, J-O-R-G-E. So check them out. Now on today's show, let's get to it. We are about how to break your fast with clean foods. That's the affirmation. So let's get started because I can't wait to eat with you. Let's start right now. It's a fact, 91% of us have a dangerous amount of belly fat, and it isn't just unsightly. When you have too much belly fat, you're more likely to suffer from aches and pains, low energy, memory loss, and poor sleep, which prevents you from performing your best at work, spending true quality time with your loved ones, and simply enjoying life. The good news is that you can cure belly fat and immediately start to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, and sleep better using simple shortcuts I've gathered. Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise, and I'm known as the 8-Minute Life Strategist to the world's busiest celebrities. I've been a fitness, nutrition, and high-performance living strategist for over 25 years, and you may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, President Clinton, Tyra Banks, Dr. Oz, Tony Robbins, or even Steve Harvey. My passion to find the best science-backed fitness shortcuts has allowed me to write over 30 books and become a multiple New York Times bestselling author with over 9 million books in print. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. Alright, so it is Wednesday. I'm thrilled you're here, guys. We're talking about what to eat. Uh, the affirmation is super simple. It's really about understanding that clean foods are the key to it all. There are 3 macronutrients. We're going to talk about clean protein, which is vital, uh, clean healthy fats, which are vital. You cannot be fat-free, guys, uh, and you have to eat good protein. And we're going to talk about good carbs too. We're going to tell you the best swaps for some of the more traditional ones that a lot of us unfortunately overuse. I think carbs are the biggest issue, but I'm excited to share with you this, and it's based on something called ancestral health. It's really the science of our species for the past 2 million years we've been around. The last 10,000 years, things got complicated with agriculture and planting foods and, and eating more plants. We're going to talk about how to be plant-based if you choose to do that. I'm also going to talk to you about which plants are the better plants. So you're going to hear all that today. We're going to really break the fast. We're going to talk about beverages. I have a really cool graphic that you're going to love. But the affirmation is simple. Let me put it up on the screen. It says, because this is really what we have to do, and, and again, we're going to talk about all this in just a moment, but with clean foods comes a new life. And you need to know that breaking your fast is really about giving yourself that opportunity, the window to give your best, best self the best food. Because you, your body, your hands, your tissue, your muscles, your face, your hair, it's all made from food. And you need to know that food is designed to maintain optimal performance. Now unfortunately, we've been sold by Madison Avenue a lot of foods that are not real, or they're processed, overly processed, they're not clean. So when we do this affirmation, visualize more than natural foods. Try to go back in time 10,000 years in your head and think, what did an ancient person do? We're not even talking cavemen, but what did people do back in the day, you know? And you know, they ate healthy meats and proteins, they ate certain vegetables that they could find, certain fruits on occasion, was seasonal, lots of water. There weren't a lot of beverages, maybe a little wine, I mean, but that was more in the Roman times. Jesus may have had that, but not a ton of alcohol. And we want to go back to that time where things were simple, because sometimes the simplest diet is is the best diet and, and one that's time-tested over time by our DNA and our genetics. So that's what we're going to do. The affirmation says the following. It says, I break my fast with clean foods. And what we're going to do is I'm going to say it 3 times. I want you to hear the words, visualize clean foods. I'll show you a graphic in a minute, and then I'm gonna have you do it 3 times, and then we'll get into the conversation about what it is and how to go through the 3 macros, because this is for so many of my celebrity clients is critical. They need a list of what to eat, and I'll give you a list, if you will, a graphical image of that. And whether you're doing one meal, two meals, or you're not even fasting, these— this is a diet that you can incorporate. This is a way of eating, um, and it's so simple. It really is. You have these foods in your house already. So here's the affirmation. Let's do it 3 times. It says, listen to the words and visualize: I break my fast with clean foods. I break my fast with clean foods. All right guys, listen again one more time. I break my fast with clean— think of those foods clean before modern world men touched this stuff— clean foods. All right, take a deep breath in. Now you're going to do it 3 times with me. I want you to stand tall, chest out, shoulders back. Take a deep breath in, hopefully in front of a mirror because that's going to help an affirmation. Take a deep breath in. Stand tall. All right, and see this becoming a part of your life, these clean foods. Let's say it together: I break my fast with clean foods. Again: I break my fast with clean foods. One more time: I break my fast with clean foods. Good job, high five, boom! If you're watching me on YouTube, I'm having fun. That's— it's worth subscribing to the channel because I get into character sometimes. And if you're on the audio podcast on Apple, that's great too, but it's more convenient just to listen. But sometimes you may want the visual, so make sure, make sure to check out youtube.com/jorgecruise. It's my channel. But let's talk about these clean foods. And definitely today you're going to want to watch the YouTube channel because you want to see this chart. It's on my Instagram, it'll be on there as well, but I will tell you, the chart that's up on the screen right now is the amalgamation— that's a big word— for the collection of the best foods over 25 years that someone has been obsessed about, and that would be yours truly. Um, let me take the graphic down real quick and just tell you, we're going to break this down into 3 macros. We're going to start with lean proteins, meats— and I take it back, not lean, clean proteins, uh, meats, I'm gonna tell you about plant-based protein in a minute, but for me, when we go back to our ancestral blueprint and we think back 10,000 years, go back 100,000 years— I mean, as a species, we've been around almost 2 million years, and I can tell you there were no grocery stores. You always hear about shopping the perimeter, and what is in the perimeter? It's usually the fresh meats, the dairies, the vegetables, and the fruits. All the packaged food is in the center. And so we're gonna take that that and kind of pretend it doesn't exist. But ancient man did not have the center of the grocery store, and they had to get up in the morning, drink some water, and go catch something because we were hunters. So what the science has shown— and if you haven't heard my interview with Dr. Paul Saladino, I'm going to suggest you listen to that. I'll connect the link on my website, Jorge Cruise, so you can watch that and listen to it. He's a brilliant man— that our ancestors ate primarily meat-based diet. That's what the science has shown. That includes poultry, fish, and things like that. But that's what we were. We were hunters. We went out and got the food. Now, were we gatherers? We're going to talk about that because we gathered carbohydrates. Those are like usually the, the plants, the, the veggies, the fruits. But those weren't as ideal. Those were for survival. But to thrive, most ancestral people believe we ate animals and it gives us the best everything, including amino acids. And our ancestors even ate organ meat like hearts and liver. And I'm not saying you have to do this, but let's put the chart back up. If you see in the front there, a lot of lean protein. I always recommend to my celebrities grass-fed beef of any sort. It's all healthy. You can get this anywhere— Trader Joe's, Whole Foods— and get it online. ButcherBox is one of my favorites. Uh, sometimes pork is okay if it's fed not corn, hopefully fed more natural foods. There's a lot of corn-based animals, from chicken to hogs and pigs are given excessive amounts of corn. And corn is a vegetable plant and a vegetable oil that is inflammatory. So you have to be cautious of that. That's why I like grass-fed beef, because it's fed grass, and that's what these cows, these beef animals ate. That's their natural indigenous food source. And so they're— luckily now even Costco has grass-fed beef. So I, I make that the center. Now another protein I love, because a lot of seafood out there is contaminated right now, and so what do do you avoid contamination? Well, my friend Dr. Mark Hyman did an incredible interview with me and he shared with me small fish are less contaminated, such as sardines. And you can get these at Costco too. You get a can of these sardines, they're usually in olive oil, which is fine, um, and they're going to give you an edge because it's portable, it's easy, you can make it a lunch, it's a great protein. I'll sometimes go on a hike and take some sardines and have a dinner of it. It's that easy. Chicken is also good, uh, both the dark meat, the white meat. You want a little bit of everything. But what my My mother from Colombia did years ago. She would eat the bone marrow. She would suck on the tendons and eat all that, and that is where collagen comes into play. And collagen, my friends, is vital for good health. I have a collagen shake every day. There are many brands out there. I would encourage you highly to embrace collagen, which is made from bone broth. It's not plant-based. It doesn't come from plants at all. You can't synthesize it at the same level. They're trying to mimic it, but I can tell you, One of my dearest friends is Marko Borago. He's a trainer. He works with Jay-Z and Beyoncé. He wrote The Green Print. He also is very plant-based. And not that I disagree with him, but I think plants were meant for survival when there wasn't the chance to thrive on animal protein. And I know a lot of animals are contaminated. I don't eat all types of beef. Has to be grass-fed, right? Just rather not eat it. And eggs too. You want to make sure eggs are given omega-3s, which usually come from flaxseeds, because if they're given corn, they're going to be rich in omega-6s, which is vegetable fats again from corn. So it's kind of tricky. You can always text me on this. You can always email me. We're going to be talking about this as I know this is a lot and I'm trying to give it to you in a little compact space here. So for me, if you're a vegan or vegetarian, what are the ideal plant-based sources of protein? I mean, I used to tell my clients go with lentils, things like that. You want to avoid soy because it's so inflammatory, especially for women, and can cause possible breast health issues. I don't eat a lot of plant-based protein and I don't believe in these plant-based burgers and all that. So It's tricky. My vegans may not love me that much anymore, but I will tell you, I have really leaned into more grass-fed beef, and that is my primary protein source. I love grass-fed burgers too. You can get them frozen at Costco. I mean, it goes on and on and on. It's out there. And collagen, don't forget collagen, both in soup form. You can make shakes out of it. You can get it pre-made. One of my favorite companies is Kettle and Fire for collagen soup. They're amazing. So that's the protein world, and you want these proteins easily. Now, fat, the next macronutrient. What about fats? Well, I love that the animal sources we just talked about of proteins, they have fat in them. So, and that's good. I've been teaching my son who's 16, Parker, that the fat that's in a steak is good for you. You don't want to throw it out. It's actually good for you. You need it for energy. It helps cure belly fat. Beef tallow, have you guys heard of that? I love Epic's beef tallow. Beef tallow is the fat from the meat. It's not a dairy. I'll talk about dairy in a minute as well, but it's kind of between protein and fats. But I will tell you, for me, knowing that I have good fats is important. Now, you know how much I love avocado oil and avocado, so that's a good thing. The fats that I love also are butter. I'll put that in my coffee. I have my cup of coffee right here finishing it up, and I have a little butter in there. So I don't overdo it, but I like healthy fats. Beef tallow is one of my favorites. Coconut oil, coconut oil as well. It's not a vegetable fat. And you want to avoid the bad fats, fats that come from vegetables like canola Canola, soybean. These are the ones that are inflammatory. These seed oils, these vegetable oils, you need to avoid vegetable oils at all costs because they cause our bodies to retain fat, belly fat. They age us, they break us down, and they're inflammatory. So please avoid those. Now, what about dairy? I use a little butter. Now, I don't drink milk. As a little kid, little Mexican kid growing up with my grandma and mom, I had asthma. I was I was overweight, and when I cut out dairy— milk, it's full of sugar, lactose— but it also has casein, and a lot of people are allergic to it. I rather have a little almond milk that's unsweetened if I need to do that. I make that with my Flat Belly Meals, but I don't drink milk. I have a little bit of cheese on occasion, kind of like as a treat. I think of it as a condiment, not as a main dish. I have a really strong love of nachos and quesadillas, but I've learned to cut back on that and not use it as much because I can get, um, gas and I can get bloated with cheese. So I don't overdo it. Grass-fed butter is the way I like to go with, with butter as well. And there's so many great ones out there. Costco sells grass-fed butter. Look for grass-fed butter that you like. And again, that's going to be a better source of those fats in the food if it's from grass-fed sources. So that's kind of the protein world. Um, let's talk about the carb world, because this is where you guys are going, "Oh my God, Jorge, you're not going to say I can't eat bread and pasta and pizza." Well, I'll tell you, one of my dearest friends is Brooke Burke, and when we go to Malibu, we'll have a pizza, we'll have pasta, we'll do all that. She does one meal a day for the most part, and she looks gorgeous, but she works out like a fiend. I mean, this gal, she does short workouts, but she does big ones. She leads a class in Malibu. She's very active, and she does one meal. And for her bio— biology, she can get away with eating wheat. She doesn't have to do spiralized noodles. And all that, but she does. And she doesn't have to do cauliflower pizza, but she does on occasion. Sometimes we'll have real pizza and all that, and I will have it on occasion. I'll admit the 80/20 rule applies to carbohydrates, in my opinion. What I would say is 80% of the time— take a look at the graph again— you want to eat the low-toxic fruits and vegetables that are on this chart, on this graph. Things like lettuce are okay, squash of all sorts are great, cucumbers, uh, tubers are good, like carrots. Those are great, and those are pretty much all the carbs I enjoy. I use I use lettuce though, a ton. Romaine lettuce to lettuce wrap burgers, to make tacos with it. You may be thinking, what about tortillas, Jorge? Well, if it's corn, you know what I think of corn, and if it's wheat, causes gluten issues because it's bad on thyroid. So I really, it's hard. I've learned to throttle back on that. Will I never have it? No, 20% of the time. So out of 10 days, 2 days I may do it. You get me? 8 days I'm pretty clean. This is again, food. And carbohydrates, processed carbohydrates like corn tortillas, wheat tortillas, whole wheat tortillas, they're all processed. You want to minimize that. And I know it sounds like, oh, you're kidding me, but you got to be cautious of it. Now, the preferred carbs out there are the low-sugar ones as well. If you're talking about fruits like the dark berries, the raspberries, those are great. Avocado is a fruit, so I put it in the fat category, but it's a fruit. Olives are great. They're kind of a fat, but you can think of them as a plant-based food as well, because they are. So I'm not saying all plants are bad, you just got to go for the ones that are low toxic. And again, my interview with Paul Saladino, he has a chart in his book called The Carnivore Code that really gives you the best blueprint for the low toxic vegetables and fruits. I always refer to him, he is a truly incredible resource and great book to check out. And that's why I love him on the show when he comes and joins ruins us, but that's kind of it. Now, how about beverages like wine and things like that? Well, that's a carb, wine. I try to limit alcohol. I know a lot of my fans are big fans of wine, red wine in particular, so 1 or 2 glasses at the max. I would save it more for a Friday or Saturday. I wouldn't do it every day. Again, out of 8 days, 2, but I know Fridays come around every 7 days, so you can give yourself that treat, but truly think of it as a treat. Treat. Think of it as something that you would enjoy, and I like ones that are low sugar, low sulfates, and I usually use Dry Farm wines. They're the cleanest ones out there from Europe. You can get them in the US. They have a subscription. I've— they've sponsored the show before, and I really like the owner, Todd White, and I love their products. So this is it, guys. Now obviously we've talked about water on Monday. Don't forget to drink water. That's what our ancestors drank because there was nothing else out there. There are lots of tricks, a lot of things you may have questions on. So I want your feedback. I really do. I want to hear what you think about all this because I know this is a lot to intake, and I know you have a lot of questions. But this is how I break my fast, and I want you to share today's message to create a conversation amongst your inner circle, your loved ones, whether it's a church community, your family, your best friends, whether you're on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. Please share today's show, the YouTube version if you want the visuals, the Apple Podcast if you just need to hear the audio and you're on the go. But share today's show with your loved ones, and I'll be back tomorrow Tomorrow we're going to continue this conversation and I'll be looking for your texts, your messages. Very important to me because I feel like right now in our world we can do so much if we are connected, but a lot of us aren't connected, you know, and a lot of emails come to me, but sometimes they get put away. I'm going to give you my cell phone text number where you can text me any questions today and join my text family. It's area code 424, that's Los Angeles number from Malibu, 424 area code.
