#7 - How to Strengthen Your Parents’ Backs
11 Nov 2019 · 19 min
In this November 11, 2019 episode of the Jorge Cruise Podcast, host Jorge Cruise welcomes longtime friend and wellness creator Shayna Taylor. After light‑hearted banter about snack swaps (Siete chips) and chia‑seed snacks, the conversation pivots to a problem many listeners share: back pain, especially in older parents and busy adults. Shayna outlines her three go‑to solutions – marine collagen, short daily stretching routines, and organic CBD oil from her brand Bottle & Stone – explaining how each supports joint health, reduces inflammation, and eases anxiety. Jorge shares his own back‑pain history, his upcoming yoga instructor certification, and quick‑fire yoga/sun‑salutation recommendations for travelers. They also discuss practical travel‑friendly wellness hacks (weighted blankets, sub‑lingual CBD, chia‑seed meals) and promote their online resources (Shayna’s Kitchen, Bottle & Stone) and upcoming product launch dates. The episode ends with calls to action for listeners to visit JorgeCruise.com, sign up for the free report, and tune in for future episodes.

Every week I'll bring you the shortcuts to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, garden more, and even sleep better. It's not just about intermittent fasting or getting a flat belly. My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. Hey guys, it's November 11th. It is Monday, and I'm so excited, guys. I'm so sorry about last week. I took the week off. I was traveling, and the good thing is I'm back in New York, and it is getting chilly in New York. It's a beautiful Monday, and I have a beautiful co-host here with me for the next few weeks. She's one of my dearest friends. We met— oh my gosh, Shane, how long ago did we meet? Probably—
when do— how long ago did we meet? We met probably 3 years ago.
Yeah, yeah, we met 3 years ago before I did Cruise Control, and we became like instant friends. You were on the podcast. I met you, I think, in LA originally, then in New York, and she's bicoastal, she's like me, we're always going between LA and New York. Yeah, travel life. Yeah, she's amazing, and she is truly someone who's, I think, more passionate at times than me about healthy living. I remember, I totally would be like best friends when we were talking about our love of corn chips.
Yes.
And remember, and then you like told me your alternative, and before we get into the story though, will you introduce yourself for everyone? Because I can do it, but let's be humble, you tell them what you do, and she's amazing. I have such a hard time talking about myself. Shayna Taylor, by the way.
Yes, hi, I'm Shayna Taylor, and I am a creator of Shayna's Kitchen and Bottle and Stone, which Shayna's Kitchen is a health and wellness blog, just all-around wellness tips and also products now. And then I also have Bottle and Stone, which is an organic CBD line launching the beginning of this year or next year.
And it's amazing. I mean, I've tried it a little bit. She's been so kind to share, and I feel like you've been sharing your secrets with me. Like, from— I remember it was— what was the replacement for corn chips? Because I've always told my clients, it's inflammatory, the corn oil. And then of course you said Siete, I think it was called. Siete chips, guys, and you heard me rave, right? I mean, seriously, tell everyone if you like us.
Yes, if you're like us or if you just want to cut corn out of your diet because you know it's bad, Siete chips is incredible and they have different kinds of flavors which are all natural and organic and they also have tortillas which if you like tacos or burritos, they have all the alternatives and their hot sauces.
Oh, so good, right?
So good. And their cashew cheeses.
I mean, we're going off on it. And they're not paying us, guys. They're not paying us.
No, they're not, they're not. We just love them.
But we love Mexican, at least I was born in Mexico. I love Mexican food. And I was raised in a Latin family and food is love. That's why I was chubby when I was younger. But now, you know, because of the fasting, I'll do every night, I'll do, everyone says, "When can I have a cheat meal?" I'm like, "Well, every night." There's, you know, if you have like chia seeds, we just had, tell them what we just had as a little midday power lunch, right?
Yeah, I came over to this lovely man's house and he offered me some chia seeds with almond milk and a little bit, of whipped cream on top. And I was like, wait, what? We can have this? And he was like, yes, you can. And I was like, wow. And I am a sucker for whipped cream too. Right? That was, yeah.
Well, you know who told me about whipped cream was Kelly Ripa the very first time I was on Live. This is back when she was before Ryan. This is when she was with Regis. I have a video. We did this thing where about, you know, just things that were filling with healthy fats. And I remember we had the whipped cream in the can. You know, it's the kind, guys, that you buy not like a dollop of it, but it comes out and goes— Yeah, the canned whipped cream.
You know, like that. Great sound effect.
My sound effect, yeah, super sound effects there. But literally it has no carbs, it has one sugar, no protein, it's all healthy fats. So it doesn't break your fast. So if you're doing any of our cheat meals, that's what we call them, right? You know, these cheating the fast meals. They're so easy, you just do 3 tablespoons of chia seeds and I had them pre-made. It was actually for Sonya, because I was gonna see Sonya today, one of my clients from the Real Housewives of New York. And Sonya and Dorinda and the Countess, Kelly, Wendy Williams, I mean almost any beautiful woman in New York, including you, knows about the chia seed, right?
So I've been eating chia seeds for so long, I actually forgot about them until recently again. And then I was actually talking to my doctor because I've been having some gut health issues, and so she was like, you should get back on chia. And I was like, you know what, that's a great idea.
And they're so easy to get, you get them anywhere.
It's such good fiber.
Yes. Oh my gosh, 3 tablespoons, 30 grams of fiber. Literally amazing. You, you'd never feel hungry, and it doesn't break your fast, so it's It's not necessarily a proper meal necessarily, but boy, it tastes proper.
But no, but it'll hold you off if you're, yeah, especially if you have one of those days where you're like, I need so much energy for work or your brain work or you're walking a lot or whatever it is. It's to have that option to hold you off is important. And I like doing matcha chia and I like doing chocolate chia and you could just do the cacao powder.
Wait till I make you an Almond Joy version, you know, like the old-fashioned Almond Joy with almonds in there and chunks of coconut. Yes, coconut meat, yes.
That's a pure Almond Joy.
Woo-hoo, all right, so as much as we're dreaming food, obviously.
I know, we're hungry.
Well, we were. We had our chia seed. It's hitting us, but we are dreaming of chips and salsa and everything.
Yes, of course.
But we are here to talk about a healthy back. And, you know, I have my dad who's in his 70s— actually, no, he's in his 80s now, my dad— and I personally still struggle with back pain. And I know I was talking to you before we started recording about how even like— and you're young, you're a bit younger than me— but, you know, whether it's our parents, ourselves, or anyone, I mean, back pain—
a lot of people struggle with back pain, right?
Yeah, yeah. So I feel like back pain And this is kind of what we want to talk about today, guys. And for me, you know, one of the things— I have a big reveal on December 15th because I'm finishing— I'm gonna kind of spill some tea here about this yoga training I've been doing here in New York. But I'm becoming a certified yoga instructor. It's been my passion for 15 years because, you know, I'm 48, but 15 years ago I was still older and my back was killing me. I used to get these adhesions.
Yeah.
So yoga—
I used to do hot yoga, Bikram, which is amazing. Sweat it out, loosen your muscles.
Oh, 100%. And then, so tell everyone that you've done this as well, because I feel like, let's talk about solutions that are practical for anyone that's busy, because I think you are— I mean, you go back and forth every week, right? Just tell them a little bit about your life, like how much you travel.
Busier and busier. More than me, right? Yeah, yeah. So I've— funny, funny that you say, I literally flew in last night.
Yeah.
At— I got home at 7:30 here, and then I'm leaving tonight at 10:30 to go back to LA.
Of course.
So this is my life.
So you're back in your body. We got to take care of it because it's hard.
It's very important.
Right, so tell them about your— what you've done for healthy back stuff, because obviously for me, guys, yoga and more coming in December about like what I'll be doing with everyone, especially in 2020, which I can't believe is— I love yoga. And it can be something as short as a few sun salutations in the morning, like 8-10 minutes.
That's what I've— tell us. Yeah, so, so I've struggled with back issues mostly because I was born with a rotated rib cage, which, yeah, which causes my hips to rotate, which pulls my back and my spine. So I've always struggled with back pain, especially on my lower right side. Yeah, I still— it's still like an ongoing struggle, especially if I'm not paying attention to it. I'm traveling a lot, it gets tight, and I have a pinched sciatic nerve, and it's like, oh, it's all these—
and you're a baby, you're 20, right?
Come on. My body is if I'm 90, like the insides are 90. I swear.
Well, you don't look 90, thank God.
No, no, yeah, the outside's okay, but the inside, forgettable. Sometimes.
But I think, I think everyone listening can relate. Can you guys relate? I mean, Piper, tell us if of you can relate here. Comment on this on the podcast. But so what has been your secret solutions? What are your top 2 or 3 options?
Number one secret solution actually that's helped me so much with back pain is taking marine collagen. So marine collagen, because it's, it's, it's like known to obviously like help grow your hair and the nails and all that, but it's— people don't realize that it's also very strengthening to the bones and the joints in your body too. So a lot of that will— I mean, back pain, there's a lot of reasons why back back pain is there, but a lot of the times it's just from weak, you know, lower back issues. And so the collagen, I was in constant back pain where it was like, oh, one of those things where you sit, I'm constantly trying to shift in my chair, and the collagen has eliminated it almost completely except for if I have some flare-up from not stretching. But my number 2 is stretching, and I'm— I don't mean like you have to necessarily go to an hour yoga class every day or twice a week or whatever, like I do simple 2-minute stretches in the morning that just— you focus on the lower back and it makes a world of difference too. And it's a 2-minute thing.
Maybe we'll do a video afterwards. We'll add it out there for social guys because I think I would love to see it. And so collagen, stretching— is there one more you want to share?
Yes, one more is the good old trendy CBD oil.
Yeah, can I interrupt for a second? Because out of all the CBDs out there, I know yours is— I mean, I, I follow your Insta. Tell them your Insta for the CBD because it's so beautiful.
Yeah, Bottle and Bottle and Stone is the name. And so it's @BottleandStone on all socials.
Yeah, and I love the name, by the way. How did you come up with Bottle and Stone?
Um, it's funny, my mom and I came up with it actually. Yeah, but I, I have an obsession with like vintage glass bottles.
Yes. Oh yeah.
And then I have an obsession with crystals and stones because of the different meanings of what they mean. And so since I'm feeling— exactly. And all the different energies and, and those and then some. So I you would never think like bottle and stone would go together, but then like we set it and we were like, that actually flows great. And then I like the idea of putting, you know, different types of crystals in the bottles. And yeah, you know what I mean? There's a lot that you could really do with it there. So that's— it just kind of— yeah.
So tell them when it's coming out, please. Now they're going to want to check it out.
Yes, the products— well, God, it's been a long, long time coming— um, are available— going to be available at Yeah, and for sure, I can't, I don't know the exact date.
End of December, or no?
January.
January, start January.
Yeah, but we're trying to decide exactly the timeframe of when we'll launch. So everything will be ready in January, either we'll launch the end of January, or we might wait till springtime, we'll see.
Okay, well we'll keep you guys posted. But you know, the reason I brought it up is I see you on your Insta, the Bottle and Stone Insta. I mean, there's pictures of you, I mean, you really like do this stuff.
Yeah, we have our own farm.
Well, tell them about that, because I think there's controversy. People think that CBD, is straight-up medical marijuana, and that you need a license, and that, you know, a lot of people aren't sure. But tell them, give them like the one minute on what it is and how you've taken this personally on. I mean, because you're kind of like really involved with the very, literally with the planting of the plants, right, to its harvesting. Tell us what it is. Go broad and then go deep.
So I preach a lot on Shayna's Kitchen, my wellness blog, about how you're not supposed to take narcotics unless it's like absolutely necessary. I know there's always circumstances where that's— sometimes it's definitely necessary, but if like the Advils and the, and the painkillers of the world, um, I think that there's a lot of other alternatives that are natural. So when CBD started to get popular years ago, I was— went into deep dive research because I was like, wait, this is incredible. Like, I would— I mean, how is it that something like this has been banned?
What were you using it for?
Sleep, pain mostly, um, also anxiety. Um, I do a lot of like in speeches and talks and panels, and so it helps a lot with the anxiety of doing that. Or even like, I'm a little bit of a social introvert, so going out in like big crowds. That's hard to believe. I know. I hide it well. But going into big crowds is uncomfortable for me, so it helps a lot with all that kind of anxiety. But so I started seeing how washed out the industry was getting because so many people, like when you get into this world, it's like the wild, wild west, I swear.
Totally, totally. It's—
there's no true regulations yet, so, so many people are jumping on the opportunity to—
And tell them what it means for— break down the acronym and why it was created and then how yours is different. But tell them the acronym, because it's CBD.
So CBD is only one strand of many— they're called terpenes in the plant. I like this. So I'm not going to try to get too scientific because it won't make sense, but— so there's the marijuana plant, which has a very, very high THC level. Which is a certain terpene that— and THC is what actually makes you feel high like marijuana does. CBD only has a very small amount of THC in the entire hemp plant itself. So once the hemp plant is actually harvested, dried, and extracted into an oil, it's, it's an extremely low percentage of THC. So basically none.
Yeah.
So, which is— and then it's all CBD, which is where all the health benefits and the different terpenes. There's also CBG, which you'll start seeing a lot of. CBG is gonna get real popular probably next year. It doesn't have any THC even in the growing process. Yeah, and it's supposed to be incredible for acne and sleep and like other specific things.
Yeah, so, so it's still very relaxing, correct?
Very, but well, not an anti-inflammatory.
And what a great way to kind of like, if you do have anxiety in the day, or like, you know, so many of my clients, I mean, they I mean, a lot of us will drink alcohol, right? Of course, it helps us pass out, but then we don't get that REM sleep. So I feel like especially people are struggling with any kind of pain, whether it's a back or whatever, you need sometimes a little support system. Because I love that you, you love the collagen, which—
love the collagen.
Collagen is so important. I love so many brands.
Collagen specifically.
And you love marine collagen?
Your body absorbs more of the marine collagen than does any pig or cow.
And not to be unpleasant, but for any of you guys not sure is collagen. You've seen it, you thought it was a cream you put on your face. It's bone broth. It's from bones of animals, fish scales, fish bones, chicken bones. And they literally, back in the olden days, back my very— one of my very first publishers was an older woman. She passed a few years ago at 90, Louise Hay. She created Hay House, and she did all these books back in the '80s and '90s. And she would— people always thought she was so weird because in the '80s she was making bone broth.
Yeah, you should get a crock pot. The gut healing— I mean, bone broth is incredible.
Yeah, it literally is. It's a protein that comes from the marrow of the bones or parts of the animals that we usually don't get if you eat their flesh. So whether it's fish, chicken, steak, you're not gonna get collagen in the meat, in the meat tissue. It's within the bone, it's the marrow. So it's like bone marrow and collagen are interchangeable for the most part. And then obviously fish or or marine collagen is one of the most— I mean, from you, from what you've read, the highest in absorption, right?
Correct.
So, and then the beautiful thing is, I mean, if you saw Shayna's hair, I mean, you get— your hair looks gorgeous.
Thank you.
Full.
Thank you.
Nails, skin.
Yes.
Tell them, right? And then obviously back, back, you know, back in the back.
It honestly was one of those things where I stumbled upon it because the company that had just started— they're a Canadian company, the one I use. And they—
so you have a collagen as well?
No, I haven't made my own collagen yet.
I was going to say, I haven't seen it yet. No, not yet.
Not yet. I want— I'm thinking about doing that.
I'm her official tester.
Yeah, exactly. But anyway, they sent it to me by chance, just like, oh, we'd love you to try our products. And this is years ago. This is like probably 4 years ago almost now. And I was like, oh yeah, sure, I'll try it. I've heard so much about it and it's changed my hair, my nails, my back, all the things. So I highly recommend it to a lot of people.
Amazing.
And then the CBD, what's great about that is obviously taking it internal, like taking a tincture is really good for anti-inflammatory and pain. Yeah.
And how do you prefer it, in liquid form or in capsule or what? Because I've used it in different forms. I've used— I love weighted blankets. You've heard of these weighted blankets? So one of my favorite things is Gravity Blankets, and now they make a CBD, and it's great when I travel because it's in capsule. Yeah. Yours is—
describe it.
I think it's more direct, right?
Just tell them, because you're, you're supposed to put it under your tongue and let it let it like sit there for like 30 seconds because it goes straight into your bloodstream that way. So it actually—
sublingual.
Exactly.
Yeah. So very powerful. Not everyone does it because, you know, you obviously have to know how to manufacture it. But in your tests, I mean, what have your experiences been? You've had other people try it, right?
Obviously. Yeah.
They're very relaxed and happy, feeling good.
Especially I have, um, a cinnamon flavor one. I know I haven't really talked much about this. This is exciting, right? Um, So, and it's so good. The cinnamon's so good.
Right, all right. Yeah, it's perfect for the holidays or for the, oh, for whenever. Cinnamon is an anti-inflammatory.
I know, and also the cinnamon that we put, it like helps the absorption go even more and it like opens your pores, the cinnamon.
All right, well, I'm impressed. So guys, I mean, not to wrap up our podcast, but you know, find out more. Tell them the URL, old school word there, for your website. I mean, old school, not everyone's on social, but we already told them social. Tell them the one you want them to go check more out on you.
Shaina's Kitchen, um, is www.shainaskitchen.com, and then Bottle and Stone is www.bottleandstone.us.
Us, yes.
And right now it's just a coming soon page for Bottle and Stone, but it'll be launching soon.
So yeah, and then she's going to be joining me for the next couple of episodes, guys, from New York. I feel like it's so cool that we've kind of had time to reconnect and do these, uh, shows. So next Monday she'll be here, and I can't believe it's It's the holidays around the corner. Thanksgiving is like so close, we can see it.
I know, it's already November and like what?
I mean, November 11th, it's crazy. I mean, what do you got going this week? Anything exciting that you're doing with yoga or stretching? Because we're gonna do a little video, guys.
Yeah, you know, I've been trying to do a lot more yoga into my routine. 'Cause you know me, I used to be trained like an athlete, basically. I was obsessed with working out every single day. I've been trying to do less of the weight workouts and doing a lot more of stretch, like Pilates stuff and a lot more yoga. Yeah, and balance, endurance, I think is very important, especially just for life in general. You don't realize how much balance can make a difference or save your life from falling or whatever.
So yeah, well, I'm excited, and I'm— and thank you for joining me on the podcast here, guys. Go check her out. Make sure to pick up the newsletter version of this as well, guys. Just go to JorgeCruise.com and you can sign up for the free Jorge Cruise Report. And please put your comments and please share this with your loved ones. Of course.
So it'll be awesome, guys. So go out there, have a great Monday, guys. Stay warm.
Yes, it is getting chilly. All the New Yorkers here, it's— oh my god, that wind chill's real.
I had to get a hat finally, gloves, and I didn't get a scarf, but I got one of those little tube neck tubes. Yeah, I feel like a New Yorker. I mean, I've been here almost 5 months. I mean, literally, and it's been such a great thing. You've been coming to New York forever.
Yeah, well, I lived here for 2 years. Yeah, and then I, and then I like permanently here, and then I moved back to LA and You know what, New York is special, guys, you know, but definitely keeps us on our toes.
Please comment below, share the podcast, and we'll see you next Monday. Take care, guys. God bless. Bye.
