#8 - How to Help Your Mom or Dad Sleep Better
18 Nov 2019 · 28 min
In this episode of the Jorge Cruise Podcast, host Jorge Cruise welcomes co‑host Shaina Taylor, founder of Shayna’s Kitchen and soon‑to‑launch CBD brand. They discuss why many older adults (and spouses) rely on quick fixes like NyQuil, bourbon, or prescription sleep meds, which can disrupt REM sleep. The conversation moves to practical, non‑pharmaceutical sleep aids: weighted (Gravity) blankets that provide a comforting hug, and the growing popularity of CBD. Shaina explains the difference between hemp and marijuana, the importance of organic, full‑spectrum products, and the two main extraction methods (CO₂ vs ethanol). They compare delivery formats—tinctures, capsules, sprays—and taste‑enhanced formulations such as a cinnamon‑infused oil and a mint spray. Tart‑cherry concentrate is introduced as a natural melatonin booster that encourages the body to produce its own melatonin. They also touch on the impact of alcohol on REM sleep, the legal landscape of CBD in California versus New York, and share personal anecdotes about travel‑induced sleep disruption. The episode ends with multiple calls to action: signing up for the free Jorge Cruise Report newsletter, leaving 5‑star reviews, and sharing the podcast with loved ones.

My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. All right, guys, happy Monday. It's Jorge Cruise. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. I can't believe literally Thanksgiving is next week. This is our last week to get ready. I'm super excited. I'm in New York City here with my guest co-host. She's amazing. Shaina. Shaina's a dear friend of mine. She has Shaina's Kitchen, which I think— I mean, how would you describe it? It really, I think it's the future of eating. Right, Shayna?
Yes.
It's understanding how powerful plants are, right?
Yes.
And she's here joining me. She was here last week. Thank you, by the way.
Of course, I'm happy to be here again. I loved you.
I mean, we talked— do you want to— we'll give them a little summary because in case you missed Shayna, I'll let her modestly introduce herself because she is a true phenomenon. We met a couple years ago and she has taken on this passion for making food healthy, but now is taking it further with, she has an incredible line of CBD that's coming out soon that we're actually gonna talk about on today's show because today's really about sleep and helping those that we love to sleep better. It could be a spouse, but more, I mean, we've been kind of focusing in on our parents because a lot of times our parents aren't dialed in and they're scared of new things.
They are, yeah.
You know, they're like, no, I'm just gonna take a sleep, like, NyQuil, like, you know, or drink bourbon.
'Cause it's what they know.
Yeah.
Of course.
So Shayna's a little younger than me and we, immediately connected. We're like totally like, you're a young Grace, I'm Will here, you know. So we had a really great connection. But tell them a little bit about how you got into this, and of course tell them your, your, uh, your, uh, social and all that. Yeah. And then let's talk about sleep, because I feel like you and I, we've talked— I remember we had one meal, I forget where it was, in Venice or in California, something like that. And we, you know, we both had a lot going on as kids. And, you know, a lot of times when you're younger and you have you know, a life where you're busy and your parents are crazy and like all this stuff. I mean, I, for me, I ate, I went to food, you know, and a lot of times people then will go to drink or they'll have an outlet, but I feel like I've turned my lemons into lemonade and I feel like you are a lemonade stand, you know, you sell the best lemonade out there of healthy food that still, in my opinion, tastes really delicious, right? I mean, it's like, like, I mean, I don't want to keep bragging about Siete chips was, you know, I don't think we're sponsored by Siete, but that's what bonded us. I mean, when you told me about the cassava root, I think, I mean, I'm just going from memory here, not instead of corn, she had me at cassava root. So take it away, Shayna. You did.
So, um, I'm Shayna Taylor and I have a blog and Instagram website that's called Shayna's Kitchen. Um, and like you said, it's, it's all based around health and wellness, especially with food. Um, I went to culinary school for college and then, um, did personal chef work for for a long time, and then I decided to kind of stop doing that and turn more into an entrepreneur and really kind of help people on a wider spectrum than just helping whoever I'm cooking for in their homes. Yeah, yeah. And then, yeah, I started my own CBD line that is launching, uh, the beginning of next year.
Yeah. And when you were cooking, you were in New York and LA, and you had certain celebs and all that.
Correct.
Names. But a lot of people— I mean, it— I mean, I don't want to say, but, you know, I've been a celebrity trainer for over 20 years, and You know, they're busy. We'll say they're busy.
Very busy and very particular.
That's a nice way to say it. And, you know, and they want food to not taste healthy. I hate to be honest, right?
You know what I mean? They want to like be skinny and healthy and feel good, but like still have all the luxuries of the taste.
Yes. So, hallelujah.
Yeah, hallelujah. Exactly. So that's on my blog. That's kind of what I wanted to focus on was not complicated recipes that still had a lot of flavor to them. And I think that the key thing was just to educate people on simple things like sautéing and caramelizing onions and putting them in a salad with like sweet potato and all of a sudden the salad is like this deliciously layered salad.
Tell them that one more time. So guys, if you want to take a salad, give them 30 seconds because now it's a commercial interruption. So literally— Well worth it.
Yeah, I'll do the fast version. So super fine chopped kale, like chopped spinach, you can do roasted sweet potatoes, so you just cut it into small dices, roast in the oven with some coconut oil and then also just sauté onions with ghee or coconut oil in a pan until they're caramelized. Yummy. Let them cool, throw that in the salad, and then I just do olive oil, salt and pepper, lemon, and a little mustard, and you toss it and it's so good.
Yummy.
Oh, and I throw herbs in there too. I love dill in salads.
Now you're making me hungry, Shayna.
Sorry.
No, but this is all good. It's plants, guys, are our friends. You know, you don't have to be a vegan, but plant-based or having plants in your life are good.
Yes, I think it's, it's, because I'm not a vegan by any means. Neither am I. Yeah, no, no, no. But I, You know, the vegetables should be the biggest part of your meal, and it should be like, that should be the first thing you're thinking of to eat because there's so many healing powers to vegetables, and they don't have to be plain. Like, I feel like people have this horrible conception of like, oh, it's so gross, and lettuce doesn't taste good. And I'm like, well, when you throw it all together with some other things, it's great. I also like nuts in salads. Like, toasted nuts are great.
One of the things I've been encouraging her for many months, maybe a year, is to write a book and One of these days, you know.
I'm working on it.
A cookbook, it's gonna be phenomenal. I'm gonna die, I'm gonna be the first one, you know.
I'm working on it.
No, but she has these amazing little hacks, these recipes.
They're hacks, yeah.
That like boom, you have it. So, all right, so let's talk about sleep because obviously, you know, I struggle with it. I don't know, do you still struggle with it at times?
Sometimes with the travel schedule, yeah.
Oh yeah, tell them about your life. I mean, go share what you wanna share, but you are traveling more than I. Yeah, I travel. New York a lot now and I go to California to see my kids. Kids, but not every week. I mean, I'm only going back every 5 or 6 weeks. Yes, you're every week or twice a week?
Yeah, I'm on a plane like every 4 or 5 days.
Yeah, so how many people can relate to that? Talk about like, not that it screws up because it's just to California and New York, so it's a 3-hour time change. It's not like Europe.
It's a lot. Most, most California and New York. I also go to Europe a lot. I also do like, like for instance, it's like this week I'm doing LA, then I have to go back to New York, then I'm going back to LA, then I'm going to Utah, then Utah back to LA, then back to New York. Like all in 2 weeks. It's crazy.
It's a little crazy.
It's a lot of planes.
But you know, you have a life that, you know, it's active, and I feel like you have clients that you take care of, and you have your businesses.
But to the point, sometimes sleep is, you know, your body's like, what time zone am I in?
You forget to sleep. And if you take too much coffee, and then, you know, too much caffeine, it's gonna stop stop you. And not that we don't— not that I don't love coffee in the morning, but you can't have it after a certain hour. No, no, you really don't want that. So let's talk about sleep, because for me, you know, one of my keys— I want to share one, and then I think— I think last week so many people wanted to know more about like sleep aids like CBD. So I was thinking maybe you could share that. Yeah, because you're like the queen on that, and I'm learning about it. I just started using CBD. I use the one that a company sent over to me, Gravity Blankets. Love their stuff. And you have a whole line coming out next year, which I want you to talk about, because it's different. It's sublingual. So she'll talk about that, and there's different types of— what do you call these?
The types of extractions.
Extractions. She's gonna have a whole class on that. But for me, like, the thing that I— because I'm so Latin, you know, like, there's this rumor of Latin people that we're so touchy-feely, but I am touchy-feely. And for me, I sleep better, you know. I'm going through a divorce, and I'm single and all that, and whatever, you know. For me, I like a hug. But when you're going through stuff, sometimes you don't get what you need. And so what has helped me at night sleep better, Shayna, literally, no BS, guys. I don't wanna be, pardon my French here, but no BS, no bullshit, is a weighted blanket.
Blanket.
Yeah, literally. And Gravity, that's how I met these people, is I was researching ways to calm anxiety. And there's so much science about if you can get a 20, and I hate to say it, a 30-pound blanket. Imagine a blanket literally filled with sand. We've got one here, I was showing it to Shane, I got her one. And literally, feel how heavy that is. I mean, it feels like, oh my God, it's like a heavy briefcase. But then you can either snuggle with it when you watch TV or literally, if I'm sleeping alone or wherever I'm at, my kids have this, Parker and Owen do, and they literally, it's like being hugged all night. And it feels so good and they have different, what do they call them, like they change the outside, the duvet, is that what they call it? So when it's spring it's cool or warm and all that. So I have now been sleeping with, this gravity blanket and I just feel like hugged. Yeah, it's so nice. Yeah.
And even if it makes me think of— it's probably funny, but it makes me think of when anyone, or like an animal or a baby is newborn and how they're like— they— to calm them down, you have to wrap them really tight.
Yeah, the coddling.
It's the coddling, right? It's, it's— I feel like it's the same. We never lose that.
I mean, no, we're human.
We're human.
Yes. So it's how it would like cuddle. Yeah, such a calming And if you're not a cuddler, you can cuddle with a blanket.
What a great gift too for the holidays.
Isn't it great?
Gravity blanket.
So no, they're super amazing and I love them and you know, it's so simple. I mean, and it really, there's science behind it. So that's a no-brainer. I mean, and it's hard. I've never had a blanket that weighed 30 pounds before. So I mean, you don't find blankets like that. And so whether it's watching TV or whatever, so that's great. But then the thing I love is that the other thing that I think would help our parents sleep better, us sleep better, and don't get me wrong, I've worked with people like Steve Harvey, and he's on record said publicly, so I can share this, where he was drinking things like bourbon a little bit more. A lot of people drink wine. I mean, Brooke Burke and I in Malibu will have a bottle of wine, we'll split it. If I go on a date somewhere here in New York, I'll have a bottle of wine, I'll split it, right? But it's, you know, but then—
I feel like it makes my sleep worse.
All right, so tell them, because you know what happens with the REM sleep, do you guys? You guys know rapid eye movement, right? And REM is basically this code word for deep sleep and we need it.
The major repair.
Do you want to take over? Tell them a little bit about it because when you drink alcohol, what happens to REM?
Yeah, well, you never go into REM sleep.
Hello. All right, take it away.
It's the same actually with a lot of sleep medication. Like Ambien is one of the worst sleeping pills you could take because your body never goes into REM sleep the entire time it's in your system. So you may think that it makes you sleep because it, I mean, people do weird stuff on Ambien too, but you never go into REM sleep, so you're actually working against yourself because now you're not getting that repair time that your body really needs to heal itself and to feel rested and to have no brain fog and all the list of things that are required to have sleep.
Oh, 100%. I feel like the solutions out there have been limited up until probably— How many years ago did CBD kind of pop?
Probably 3 years ago now is when it got really popular. Really.
I remember my friends used to do just NyQuil. I mean, that—
I mean, or Benadryl.
Yes. I mean, if you're not going to do bourbon, then you got Benadryl. But it's like, oh my gosh. I mean, I feel like it's the '70s. But so tell them what happened. How many years ago did you say?
About CBD? Um, I would say probably 3 years is when it started.

And to get trendy, and then like this last year is when it really got big. Yeah.
And tell them what it stands for and tell them what it is. Kind of like recap what we talked about last week.
So, it's—
And then get into the details, please.
Yeah, yeah. So CBD is only from the hemp plant. It is not from the marijuana plant, which I think is a very important thing to understand. The marijuana plant is very, very high in THC levels, which is the, obviously the terpene, as they say, that would get you that high feeling. The hemp plant has a very low, low THC levels. THC levels.
They look similar, right?
Yeah, they look exactly the same.
Yeah, they look very—
yeah, but there's, there's many plants that are in the marijuana family, family, that—
and hemp is like a cousin of sorts, correct?
Yeah, it's like a cousin.
Yeah.
Okay. So, um, so yeah, hemp does not make you high, just in case you're wondering. So it's safe to take without changing anything in your body. Um, think normally, you can still think, you can still function. It doesn't even feel— the only thing you maybe notice is like, I don't have as much anxiety anymore. Or you're a lot more relaxed than you would be. But it's just like how I like to explain it to people is like, okay, if you— like some people are like, well, I'm taking it but I don't feel any difference. And I'm like, well, that's okay because it's like Advil. For instance, if you take Advil and you have no pain, yeah, you're not gonna notice a difference, right? But if you take Advil and you have pain, you're like, wow, the pain is gone. That's great. Okay, same thing is with CBD. If you don't have necessarily pain, you won't necessarily feel a difference. But if you have pain or a migraine or back pain or whatever, If you take CBD or rub CBD on that area, of course it's going to resolve the problem.
I love that. Really, it's such something that people have been using, like marijuana, but hemp for how many years?
Hemp's been around forever.
See, as much as it's only 3 years hip and cool and posh in LA and New York and everyone, I mean, who do you have that is using your products right now? Family, friends?
Family, friends, of course. Loved ones, all that? Yes.
What do they say? They excited?
They love it. They're so excited because they can't get enough of it because we're still— we just Yeah, we've done tons of product development. We finalized everything just recently, but I only get so many. I have loads of samples, and so I keep giving away the samples, and they're like, "When are we gonna get more?" And I'm like, "Wait." They're dying.
Well then, let's spend a minute on this hemp world of CBD, because I feel like there's at least 4 different, what do you call these?
Yeah, the extractions.
Extractions. So walk people through it, because if they're out there trying to learn, teach them, give them like 5 minutes max.
So key tips that I could give you. Yeah, tell us. Why, if you're looking for CBD oil, is obviously organic is very important. I think it's very important because there is a mold issue in a lot of hemp farms and manufacturers, so just be aware that certified organic is important. Yes. Also, full spectrum oil is from all of the plant, so you get the most benefits because you're using the entire plant instead of using just specifics. And then CO2, not all of them will state that, but if it reads CO2 extraction Amazing. So full spectrum CO2.
And CO2, for those of us that may not know what it is, means that it was extracted with CO2.
Right, it's just a certain type of extraction that you— it's so— there's— oh, so ethanol is like the— from the whole plant.
This little science, guys, a tiny bit of them. So like, you're the science major here.
Broad spectrum is only using the top of the plant. Yeah, like full spectrum uses the whole entire stems and all the things.
—And that's what you prefer? You prefer full?
—I think full spectrum is the best option. Yes, correct.
Yeah. —And so when it comes out through the CO2, it just takes the nutrients? We call them nutrients or the medicine? What do we call it?
—They're called terpenes, but you can say benefits, just the benefits of all the different types of— yeah. So, and also, so ethanol is the rawest form, but it has— it's very strong in flavor. So like, if sometimes it's too much for people, so ethanol is really good to use in creams and facial stuff because you're not necessarily tasting it. CO2 has just as much benefits, but they take some of that strong taste, like really aggressive taste out of it, so it's a little more smooth. So you're not like, holy hemp is in my mouth.
And I know we've talked about this, you have one that's coming out with cinnamon. So it's almost like, I don't want to say it's like candy, but it's very— So good. Anti-inflammatory, but it does taste good. Taste more like, how would you describe the cinnamon one?
Yeah, I guess it tastes like a treat, yeah.
Yeah, it feels like the holidays with it. It does, yeah, yeah. It's super yummy and—
It's yummy and light and yeah, you don't even really taste the hemp at all and it's, yeah, you just put it right under your tongue. And then I also have a mint spray which I brought for you to try.
Can I do one right now? Yeah. I'll do it with you guys, you can hear it, it's the most beautiful bottle. Have you picked the very elegant, like, I like this bottle, it's super beautiful, guys. We'll put a picture up, all right?
I'll show you all the details.
I did 2. Is that okay? Yeah, 2 is the right amount. I'm ready to relax. Well, no, this isn't about relaxing. So if I do it in the day, like right now, like in the morning, like it's just gonna— you're gonna have less, less of an edge and more— less of an edge. I don't want to say you're gonna have more confidence, but it's definitely gonna take the edge off and you're not gonna be anxious.
It actually helps with— yes, because when you're anxious, you feel like you— it's like you almost hold back. Like, I have an issue with sometimes when I'm anxious that I like can't pull my thoughts up because I'm like you know, I'm like, I get a little anxious, then this kind of just— it just takes, like, unknowingly takes the edge off. Yeah, it's perfect.
So that's a great daytime one. And I know I've also have the Gravity Blanket ones. They do capsules. They do— they call it Gravity PM. And I've been— I've had Sonia use this and Dorinda, and they take— I, I do 3 capsules, um, comes with 30. But you know, it's a little more set. You just take it and go. But I love the spray because— tell them about why a spray— I mean, obviously a capsule works too. I mean, if you don't I don't like sprays, obviously it's a preference, and just swallow and go, right? It's easy, check. But then a spray, if you go under the tongue, tell them about the tongue under the tongue.
So the tincture, yeah. So a tincture is, I think, I mean you can take the capsules totally fine. I think tinctures are the best because it goes into your system faster and you absorb more.
Literally, when you say the system, you mean the blood system, literally.
Yes, correct, straight into the blood system, yes, because of the main artery here on your left side. Yeah, I think it's quicker. It's quicker, yes. And if they— I mean, listen, I understand if some people are like, "Well, the tinctures don't taste good." Well, if it tastes good, then you're good to go. I think it's all preference.
Yeah, yeah. I think it's good to have options. I think if you have a little bar at home, you may have a little tequila, but you also may have another cocktail. By the way, you can mix CBD into cocktails.
We've done that before too. Did you really? Yeah, we've put the cinnamon cocktail in a hot toddy.
All right. Wow, I'm excited. All right. I want one of these drinks. Yeah. And you can do it— Yeah. The great thing is it's natural and people have been doing this for so many— I don't want to say millennia, but it has been millennia using hemp and cannabis.
It's sad, it's very sad that it was banned when it was because, I mean, this is totally off topic, but the plastic world and how horrible it is. Yeah, you can make hemp— you can make plastic out of hemp, which would be biodegradable. So I wish that they did not make it illegal, and I'm happy that it's legal now.
Yeah, no, we live in this age and I can't believe like next year's 2020, so I feel like Not that we want to end the podcast, we'll be back on Monday. You're joining me again next Monday and she's been my guest co-host here for the last 2 weeks and we're going to do a few more of these.
I have one more recommendation I want to throw in that I just discovered. Tell us everything. Tart cherry concentrate. So tart cherry concentrate is amazing for sleep.
Cherry, like cherry pie? Like tart cherry juice.
I can already taste it. I know, it makes your mouth water. Yeah, I'm watering right now. So what's amazing about it is like, you know, everyone got excited about melatonin for a long time, which is fine, but it's not good to take every day because it's, it's adding melatonin into your body and your body won't produce its own if you take too much of it. So I used to use melatonin all the time, right?
You know, I used to eat corn chips too.
We all are learning here. Yes, we're all learning. The tart cherries juice actually makes your body produce its own melatonin and like extra of it. So instead of you know, giving it something that it won't produce so your body stops producing itself. This is like a total thing that makes your body produce its more on its own, on its own melatonin. Yes. So I like— I've recommended to people that have had some like sleep issues, major, and they, they're like, the tart cherries changed their lives. And there's, there's actually a lot of other benefits as well to the tart cherry juice. This is crazy.
So you can do the tart with the CBD? Totally.
And you would probably Not even dream, who knows.
Just be the deepest, because I can tell you, when I use CBD, and what I love about it, because I've used medical marijuana, you know, I've had a doctor's prescription for it. I mean, I don't talk about it too much, but I'll share it with you guys on the podcast. I mean, probably for the last 5 years, you know, it was stressful, just, it's stress, life is stressful. Life is stressful, yeah. And CBD wasn't really out there, and medical marijuana in California, you had to have a prescription. It wasn't recreational, it wasn't something you could just buy at the store now. —these stores now in LA. Do you see these MedMen, right? They're everywhere. I don't know if they have them in New York. Not yet, no.
No, New York's not as lenient with the whole marijuana, hemp, CBD world. Tricky here, man. Yeah, the laws are, they're not really accepting. Like, California basically has accepted every law that benefits the marijuana and hemp industry. New York's been a little bit more tough.
We're like in the '80s here still, right?
Yeah, they're just— It's weird that New York, the biggest, smartest city in the world, and we're like still stuck in the '80s. I know, it's behind on wellness too. The whole city just is like stuck in an era that is like— they're stuck.
Come on, we're here for a reason, you know. Me, I'm from Malibu, you're from Venice, and your place— you're more in Venice or Santa Monica right now? Venice. Venice, right? Yeah. So it's so such a great thing, guys. So I would say this, not to end but to wrap it up. I mean, I feel like for me, I've used it, and when I use it at night before bed, it makes me drowsy. I go to bed, I sleep great, and then I can still wake up. I'm kind of crazy, a little psycho. I wake up at 5, 5:30. Me too. And I don't have that like tired feeling. Yeah, because if I use medical marijuana, whether it's an edible or— I try not to smoke, I really don't. I never vape anymore. I did that for a little bit and now—
yeah, I don't vape either.
Too many people are dying.
Yeah, we're gonna do like hand-rolled CBD, do like joints. Oh wow. Yeah, which is still— hello— smoking, but it's not vape at least. Yeah, so people that prefer to just have a smoke, it's, it's old school.
Old school is a little safer. You don't— I mean, as much You shouldn't be smoking cigarettes. I mean, you don't die within a year or two.
No, no, this is a great alternative, at least.
I'm dying, and I feel like, you know, but unfortunately, when I was doing that with cannabis, medical marijuana, it would be hard to get up in the morning. I'd hit that snooze button, or I'd just, and you know, it's nice to do that maybe on a weekend, but you can't do that during the week. No. But with CBD.
CBD, not like that at all. I give it to Ryan, too, every night, and he loves it. He does, yes. 'Cause he had sleep issues for a long time. Really? Yeah, yeah. I cured his sleep problems. Really? Yeah.
Well, tell everyone, now that you mentioned Ryan, Mr. Seacrest, tell them a little bit about like your other half because he is, he's benefited from your health insights for how many years now?
A few, right? 6, almost 7. Congratulations. I know. Yeah, Ryan Seacrest is my boyfriend and we've dated for a few too many times over the years.
But you guys are definitely the power couple.
Yes, we're both in, we're both very into wellness. He wasn't as, he was into it but not crazy into it. You took him to the next level. I really converted him, yeah. Because I'm like, I mean, I'm my own guinea pig, you know? I'm constantly me trying new things all the time, right? He's my second guinea pig. So, and he, and he like, he likes it. He's like, I'll take whatever. He doesn't even ask anymore. He's just like, opens his mouth like, okay, like, put it in.
