#84 - It’s Okay to be Selfish
8 Oct 2020 · 16 min
In this solo podcast episode, Jorge Cruise introduces the new "Ask Big" series and shares his personal journey from an overeating young adult to a bestselling author and celebrity trainer. He announces the rebranding of his 8‑Minute HIIT program to Zero Hunger Live (zerohungerlive.com), outlining its three pillars: electrolytes to curb false hunger, high‑intensity interval training to suppress appetite, and mindfulness to manage cravings. Sponsored segments promote Primal Kitchen’s avocado‑oil products and Joovv red‑light therapy, both positioned as tools for reducing hunger and improving wellbeing. The core of the episode is a mindset shift: being "selfish" is framed as essential self‑care, using the airplane oxygen‑mask metaphor to argue that you must prioritize your own health before you can serve others. Jorge links uncontrolled eating to emotional cravings, explains how carbs and sugars perpetuate a hunger cycle, and recommends intermittent fasting and regular HIIT as practical solutions. He leads listeners through a repeated affirmation—"I’m okay being selfish"—and encourages them to apply it by setting personal boundaries (e.g., sleep, limiting calls, prioritizing exercise). Finally, he calls listeners to share the message with three people, join his free "Fit Family" texting group (424‑228‑9548), and reach out for personalized coaching on weight loss, fasting, and fitness.

Happy October 8th. It is Thursday. How are you? Hope you're well. Welcome to the show. I'm Jorge Cruise, and on today's show, we're going to be continuing our brand new series called Ask Big. And if you know anything about my history, I've been the guy that at an early age was the one that asked Oprah for a picture when I, when I met her and I was on her show. And to that day, I have that photo and it means the world to me. And believe me, I was in my 20s, early 20s, and Wouldn't have known to have done that, but innately I had a little bit of confidence. And I love sharing with you what has given me now the edge over 20 years with clients, with television shows, with really understanding what it takes to really hopefully shift people's lives and more importantly, my own life. Because I've learned so much in the last 20 years, 2 decades of lessons and over 30 books. So, Aspik is the first really project I'm doing and I'm sharing it with you guys here first on the show, really to do what I've what I would call kind of like an inner mindfulness project. And it's really about understanding that inner fitness, you're right, like thinking fit, is really the key to it all. And that's what Ask Big is. It's really about giving you the confidence to go after anything you want, you know. But so many of us right now during COVID-19 feel a little out of control. And I know a lot of my clients feel like their hunger is out of control. So it could be that, it could be a lack of exercise, it could be a lack of positive thinking and looking at everything half empty. And, and, and really transforming that is the key. You have to— I mean, we have to accept our reality. And so on today's show, we're going to talk about how it's okay to be selfish. That's on today's show. But first, we are brought to you by 3 sponsors, and I want to give a shout out to them. First, it's 8 Minutes Live, which now is going to be shifting to a new URL. It's going to be called zerohungerlive.com. Uh, the 8-minute HIIT training that I do will still be there. We're launching this Friday, but I'll tell you, the shift in branding for me in the sense of how I communicate this is, I think, more important than ever. 8 Minutes just says 8 Minutes. Zero Hunger is so much more, and it's really comprehensive because this site is really going to have the 3 keys to zero hunger, really understanding that it starts with, um, really an add-in to what I do to my water every morning, which is add electrolytes, and giving you that edge to do that. So we start our mornings now talking about how to really deal with nutrition and how to turn off false hunger, which is electrolytes. And then we move into our workout. And the workout, as you know, is high-intensity interval training. But HIIT training has been incredibly scientifically proven to turn off hunger. So it's a form of appetite support. And then the third part is kind of what our whole last big discussion has been about. It's about really being mindful. And it's about being mindful of our words, our thoughts, and knowing that we can really, for lack of a pun here, but this hunger that we have in life sometimes to want more and more and more needs to be controlled as well. You know, we gotta turn that down. So I wanna invite you to check out a new website that's launching this Friday, but it'll be available for early signup if you want to, but it's live right now. So as is this Thursday, but we're launching tomorrow. It's happening quickly. It's called ZERO, the letter Z-E-R-O. You have to spell it out, It's the letter spelled out, zerohungerlive.com. Now we're also brought to you by Primal Kitchen. I love Primal Kitchen. I will sing their praises till the end because they really give me the best oil out there made from avocados for any kind of grilling I do, any kind of salad dressing I want. I use the mayonnaise version on my steak almost every day. It's a dollop of my favorite chipotle lemon mayo. And they are giving us a free Chipotle lemon mayo with avocado, made with avocado oil, if you go to the following website.
So check them out.
Go to primalkitchen.com/jorgecruise and just put that in and you'll get free lemon chipotle made from mayonnaise, but avocado oil, and it's anti-inflammatory, helps stop hunger, false hunger. It's one of the keys. It really is. And we're also brought to you by Joovv. Now, Joovv is my red light therapy that I use every single morning upon rising, literally up before 5:00 AM. And when I wake up, I turn on this red light which is the ultimate feel-good light on Earth. I feel amazing because, as you can imagine, at 4:30 it is dark, uh, and a little cold and not so pleasant. This makes the room almost like a neon pink, neon magenta, almost like the color of the show. And I love it because it literally changes my mood within seconds. I mean, it literally is that fast. And if it shines on your skin, it's good for collagen production, which makes you young. I mean, the list goes on and on. So check them out at Joove. Jooovv.com/jorge and you get a free gift with the promo code Jorge. The website is jooovv.com/jorge. All right, with that said, guys, let's get started with today's show. You're going to love it. We're going to be talking about how to ask big and why it's okay to be selfish. Let's get started right now. Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise and I'm the number one New York Times bestselling author of over 30 books. And you also may know me as a leading fitness trainer to the world's busiest celebrities. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Kelly Clarkson, or even Dr. Oz. My career started because in my early 20s I was an overeater, and experts told me I was unhealthy because I lacked discipline and didn't exercise enough. Well, they were wrong. I discovered that there are simple shortcuts that can give you control of your hunger, and I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. So it is Thursday. Hope you're having a great day or night, uh, this October 8th. You're hard to believe the month is underway here. And, uh, on this Thursday we're going to be talking about why it's not just okay, in my opinion, um, it's critical to be selfish. Now, this is something that Oprah taught me years ago, this delicate balance between being selfless and selfish. And I'll tell you, I used to really look poorly on people that were self-centered, right? You would call them narcissists, or you'd call them people that were, you know, high in ego, and it was so unzen and unspiritual, these people so focused on themselves. But I will tell you Oprah gets a lot of credit on this because she really, I think, was the first pioneer in the media really to educate us about how the science has shown that if you love others, whether it's a child, your parents, your, your, your family, friends, your— the people you work with, clients we'll call them, if you're a teacher, students, your clients, whatever that is. But if you love these people that you can't really serve them if you're broken. And if you don't focus on yourself, it's like the oxygen metaphor of the oxygen mask falling out of the airplane when there's an accident or something bad's happening. They always tell you, you guys know this if you've traveled, they always say, put on your mask first, then put the mask on of your child or loved ones or whoever. You have to take care of yourself. So on today's show, we're really going to emphasize that with an affirmation that's going to give you permission to be selfish. You need to do this because if you don't take care of yourself, you won't be there for a single other person on earth, let alone yourself. You'll be miserable, you'll always feel depleted, and worst of all, you'll feel like you're broken. And if you're in a place where you want to get control of your life, and so many of you have now told me, this is usually, it's gone up a tiny bit, but it's about 7 out of 10 of you have told me that the number one thing you want to focus in on is controlling your appetite. This hunger of ours, you know, we get these cravings at times, whether it's for sweets or carbs or salty snacks. And it's really just a true hunger on the inside sometimes for a lack of something in our lives like connection or a hug or just attention and feeling good. And, you know, these things that we crave, you know, we crave these sugars and carbs. And truly, if it's a salty snack, it's not the salt we crave. It tastes good, but we get addicted because it's a carb. It's a chip usually. Sort of potato chip or corn chip. And so how do we overcome even that selfishly? We have to, because what happens if you overeat? You start to gain weight, and you're not intermittent fasting then, and then you're overeating. And remember, if you eat more carbs, more sugars, you're going to get more hungry. That feeds a cycle, so you'll never gain control of your appetite, let alone your exercise, let alone your mindset. So here's today's affirmation. It's simple. It says I'm okay being selfish. I'm okay being selfish. Sounds pretty self-centered, but let's say it now 3 times together. Stand up tall, shoulders back, deep breath in, and say it with me right now. I'm okay being selfish. I'm okay being selfish.
One more time.
I'm okay being selfish. Now think of that word selfish. Think of something that you need to do to care for yourself. Is it going to bed on time? Is it not taking a call because you know you can't? You're just depleted, you don't have the energy, and you just let it go to voicemail. Knowing that they'll leave a message if it's important? Is it not returning every single email that is sent because you only have so much time every day? Is it making time for yourself to exercise upon rising? What is it for you that's going to make you feel happier, that's going to fill you up and really replace the hunger that you may have for— you think it's hunger for food, but it's really just to feel good. And by being selfish, you're going to take care of the most important person in your life, which of course is you. That's the irony of this all. It's about us embracing and not feeling guilty anymore, ending the guilt right now to be selfish, and knowing that if you love someone, whether it's someone in your life that's young or old, family or a friend, if you love them, you have to be there for them. But you can't be there if you're broken. It's such a simple metaphor. It's just like the airplane. You just have to put on your mask first and not feel guilty. You have to release the guilt and know that by serving yourself first, you get to be there to help others. And if you're like me, someone with a big heart and someone with a lot of energy, you're going to be able to help more people because you're taking care of yourself. And that is the most important thing I need to ask of you right now, is to empower yourself with this affirmation and share this message with at least 3 people in your life that you care about that need to hear this and say, hey, you know what, I'm going to be focused in on myself. This actually— this new schedule is going to impact maybe how much time I have, so I wanted to let you know. And let them know that you need to do this because you're depleted and you need to take a breath. You need to take some time for yourself because ironically COVID has given us time, but we're just as busy as before, more stressed out because everyone's in one place— family, friends, everyone's all in one place. A lot of us are living with people we didn't expect to live as long as we are with. Not that that's good and not that that's bad, but it's just overwhelming. And so in order to take time for yourself, sometimes letting people know that you heard something that shifted your thinking and here it is, I thought you would like to know, and I'm going to be embracing this challenge of being okay to be selfish. So I hope you share this with 3 loved ones, guys. Let's make this happen. This is how you get the big picture in life. This is how you get control of your life.
I really promise this will work. All right.
I look forward to hearing your success. Text me, email, you guys know how to get in touch, and I'll see you tomorrow at the same time. Take good care.
