Hi, I'm Jorge Cruise, number one New York Times bestselling author and celebrity trainer, and I want to welcome you to the all-new Jorge Cruise Podcast. Every week I'll bring you the shortcuts to work better, reduce pain, improve memory, garden more, and even sleep better. It's not just about intermittent fasting or getting a flat belly. My mission is to give you simple ways that will empower you to live as you choose. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Podcast. Hey guys, it is November 25th. Uh, welcome to the podcast. This is Jorge Cruise, and I can't believe it's Thanksgiving week, guys. I'm so excited because my co-host here, uh, for the third week in a row is Shayna. Shayna is one of my dearest friends in NYC and in LA. She has Shayna's Kitchen, which is amazing. I'm gonna let her talk about it minute. If you've been listening to the podcast last 2 weeks, she's been adding such great depth to everything we've been talking about, from CBD to eating healthy chips to traveling to— I mean, we've talked about it all. And so she's here with me again. Please say hi to everyone because they need to know about you, and tell them everything you do. Take it away.
Yes, so hi, I'm Shanna Taylor, if you guys don't already know.
Yep.
And I am the creator of Shanna's Kitchen and Bottle and Stone, which are both wellness brands, one that caters to to more of a wellness lifestyle, recipes, health tips, skincare, all of the above around wellness. And then the other one is an organic CBD line, which yes, we have talked about a few times.
Oh my gosh, we had so many great responses from people that had trouble sleeping, and we were giving our best secrets on sleep, from weighted blankets to CBD. And so thank you guys for your comments, your feedback.
Yeah, yeah, it's amazing. You know, my boyfriend's driver here in New York has had really horrible sleep problems.
Really?
I told him about the tart cherry juice.
Yeah.
He's like, oh my gosh.
He loved it?
He loves it. He's like, I literally— he's like, I pass out so hard. He's like shocked.
So Shayna, if you guys don't know, she shared this last week, but her boyfriend is Ryan Seacrest. We love Ryan. He's been on this show many times with Kelly and love Live with Kelly. And he met you back in the day when you were— were you preparing stuff for him? Or tell him a little bit about your background with food. Or I mean, not to talk about Ryan.
So I used to be— I went to culinary school for college and then was doing personal chef work for most of my young 20s. Yeah. Basically until I moved to New York 3 years ago. Ah, okay. Yeah, yeah.
And so then that's when you transitioned into more—
That's when I transitioned into focusing more on the entrepreneurial side of the wellness industry. 'Cause I wanted to, like I said in the other one, I wanted to, it's like, I love helping people. I've been that way, I've been a caregiver my whole life. And cooking for people is, I love it so much 'cause you get to take care of whoever you're cooking for. But I wanted to kind of take it further and like really educate and give people things that will help them long-term.
Yeah, and with your Shayna's Kitchen, I feel like you give people a way to enjoy food I'm sure, I mean, I've seen your food, it's delicious. We've had chia seeds together, we've eaten plants, we've done it all. I mean, and you're not a vegan necessarily, just means really making—
No, I eat a lot of vegetables, but I also eat chicken and fish.
Yeah, same thing here, and it's about just making great choices and making sure that you don't settle where the food doesn't taste, I mean, I hate to say it, I mean, you've worked with enough well-known people as I have, you want the food to taste good.
Of course.
I mean, come on.
I think that healthy eating got a bad rap a long time ago of not tasting good or not having any flavor, and that's just because no one really knew what to do what you can do with it. So there's just so many simple things that you can do with seasonings and herbs and herbs.
You gave everyone, you gave us all, I mean it was almost like a little sideshow, but it was amazing about using onions last week. So guys, re-listen to last week's podcast because you gave them basically a way to make any salad.
Yeah, I gave them a little salad hack.
Yeah, so listen, we're not going to get into it, guys, we're going to run long. But today we're talking about how to get rid of grown-up belly fat. So for me, I'm definitely grown up. You're kind of grown up. You're still in your 20s. How young are you? About to turn 28. You're a baby, but you know, 28 is good.
28 going on 60. Oh gosh. I'm an old soul.
Well, you are an old soul, and you know, not that you've had belly fat, but I, if you Google my name, Jorge Cruise, and you type in fat, all my belly fat pictures come up from a million years ago, back when I was with Oprah and all that, and it's been crazy, but—
Well, you know, I know Ryan would hate me for saying this, but you know, he struggles with belly fat.
Don't be listening, Ryan. If he's listening, what's up, Ryan?
He struggles with belly fat too.
Yeah, well.
Yeah, he struggled with it for a long time, and you know what's crazy is actually, just recently because I have us on this anti-inflammatory diet for a minute. Yes, because my little boy is nut crazy, and nuts are amazing, but if you eat them excessively, they are an inflammatory food.
Yes.
So, you know, eliminating those inflammatory foods, just not long-term, you don't have to eliminate them forever, but just to like give yourself, your body, a break for a second, you know, it's a good thing. And of course we do intermittent fasting, which is— yes, life-changing.
Love you guys for that. You know, Kelly does it with, with Mark, her husband, but they had me on the show in April, and it's so cool because not everyone talks about it, but that's what we're gonna talk about.
Good for you though, because like, like, I love to put it so simply because this is like the easiest way for people to understand that I've found, is that if your body is constantly working on the food that you're digesting, like it's constantly focusing on like, okay, I'll go more food, oh God, more food, oh, how is it ever gonna go and burn the other fat or repair the other things that needs to be repaired in your body if it never has a break?
Yeah, of course.
So it's intermittent fasting, all it does is it gives your body a break and it gives it enough time, or like a break window where it can start working on all the other things it needs to work on.
I mean, and I'll add two cents in here, guys. You know, if you're grown up like me, and whether you're Ryan's age, my age, because he's a little younger than me, but you know, whatever age you're at— 45. 45. I'm 48. So if you're in your 40s, 50s, or in your 30s or 20s, you know, belly fat is a problem. I mean, Dr. Oz was the one that taught me about this over 15 years ago before he had his talk show. He— and before he was even with Oprah, I met him at— here in New York. And, you know, he had me do this old-school video before there were iPhones. We did it on a Canon ELPH. You may not remember the Canon ELPH, these tiny little camera, pocket camera. And we recorded this little 6-minute video that is probably my— when people say, "Have you ever gone viral?" I'm like, "Well, Dr. Oz," but like 20 years ago when YouTube was not even around. I think it was on Yahoo or something. But this great video, and Dr. Oz taught me back then that belly fat is the number one cause of heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and it robs you of confidence.
Confidence. Yeah.
So, you know, if you're gonna get rid of belly fat, no matter what the age is, guys, intermittent fasting— I guess that's what we're really here to preach a little bit in today's show is, you know, and you guys know I'm the author of Cruise Control, and when I kicked that off, you were part of that. We had a whole interview and we had a whole podcast just for Cruise Control. It's still out there if you guys want to search for it. But I would say for me, you know, now that it's almost 2020, I've evolved Cruise Control where I think of it as is, you know, not just intermittent fasting, but it's about cheating the fast. Like when we did this a few weeks ago, remember when we had a chia seed pudding and we had whipped cream on it? And a lot of people think, oh my gosh, you're breaking your fast. And the great thing is there are certain types of things you can do, whether it's like the butter in the coffee or the heavy cream or coconut oil, MCT oil, that turns off hunger, doesn't break your fast. Fat doesn't do that, you know, healthy fats. And then when you're ready to proper meal, you know, I'll have— I do, I do a 3-hour eating window right now. And I was asking you, and share with everyone your window, because it's a little smaller than 8. 8 is what most of my celebrity clients do. But you, you and Ryan do what?
Um, Ryan does a little bit different than me. I go a little longer. He does 16 hours.
Okay, so he's the traditional.
Yeah, so he's the traditional. I go 18 to 20 now.
Yes! Oh, I love it.
So, but I still eat.
So 18 to 20 hours of fasting. Yeah. So we have a 4 to 3 hour window.
One of those grandmas that likes—
Grandmas, listen.
Yeah, people, this is what people, they call me grandma. Because I like to eat at 5:00.
Yes.
So it's easy for me to get those windows in, like those fasting hours, because I'll eat like an amazingly full, nutritious, you know, meal at 5:00, 5:30, and then I don't eat again until the afternoon. But because now I've been doing it for a long time, I mean, it really only takes like— my girlfriend just— I finally got her to do it.
Yes. And was she scared of being hungry, right?
She's like, oh God, she's like, I need food. And I'm like, you don't need food. Yes. I'm like, we're— you have to think of us too, like Do lions eat every day? No, lions sometimes don't eat for a week at a time and they're totally fine. Yes, weird.
No cancer, no heart disease.
No.
And when your body doesn't eat overly, what happens, guys— and this is the word I want you to talk about too— is there's this science word called autophagy, and all it means is that your body does housekeeping, right? And so when you give your body a break of up to 20 hours— that's amazing, I try to do 21 hours, but I'm right with you, you know— what your body does is Ironically, is it taps into whatever it can to clean up your body. It refreshes your body from your skin, your nails, your hair.
So many things.
You look younger. I mean, I'm taking this training class right now for yoga, and there was an instructor that taught anatomy last Sunday at Pure Yoga, is where I'm doing this at. They're amazing here in the city. And, you know, she was 42. She looks like your age, like 28.
Intermittent fasting?
Yeah, one meal a day. And she then told the whole class, there's 25 in it. And about how when she was 18, her father was diagnosed with cancer, and that was very similar to how my dad was diagnosed around the same time when I was 18, and given only a year to live, and overcame cancer through fasting. I mean, your body really, if you give it that time off, tell us, right?
I mean, your body is a machine. Like, our bodies are machines. All they know how to do is live. So if you— it's like, think about it, of a car. If you give a car and the gas water, it's not gonna work. It's the same as like if you, you know, give your constantly your body and all the bad things for it and you never give it a break to repair itself, like it's gonna break down eventually.
Yeah, and you overwear it, you wear it out. And I like your idea, you know, I have to kind of commit to what you're doing. Although I'll be honest, I love your idea. I think if I were to approve this for any celebrity, if they could eat around 5:00 or 5:30, or anyone listening, what a great time. You get your good meal in, it's kind of still midday, and then, you know, nighttime comes and hopefully you're going to bed at a reasonable hour. And hopefully you're saying 9:30. And if you have trouble sleeping, tell them what we talked about last week, right?
Oh yeah, we talked— well, I told you the, the tart cherry juice and CBD, the combination of the two is amazing.
Yeah, so listen to last week's podcast. We went deep, dived deep on sleep and CBD. But definitely take your, your, your, your, your— what do you call it when it goes under the tongue again?
Tincture.
Your tincture of CBD. And, you know, check out— obviously, what are the brands you would recommend right now that you've used? Any— you know, I like Gravity Blankets capsules when I'm on the go, but what— what's— give us one brand a brand that you like or not yet?
I mean, the issue is, I guess the only one that I—
You're making your own. For those of you guys who didn't hear last week, to give them a minute of this, that you are launching next year.
I'm launching my own, yes, certified organic CBD line. I have my own farm. I'm very hands-on. I go to visit the farm.
I love that you have a farm. I can call you my only farming friend. You're a farmer.
I know, I know.
My farmer friend is here.
I have farmers that obviously, they take care of everything.
Is it here in New York or where? It's in Vermont.
It's in Vermont.
So chic, you're in Vermont in your farm.
Vermont's beautiful.
You must invite me. I'm ready to go to Vermont.
I'll take you there. They just did harvest, so there's not anything exciting happening for winter, but in springtime—

All right guys, let's get back to the show. It'll be Shayna is a farmer, guys. Shayna the farmer.
I know. Well, you know, I, I, you know me, I'm like, I'm an all 100% in or nothing person, of course, especially if I'm gonna go, you know, products or anything like that, you know. I'm like, I get paranoid. So I, I mean, I decided to do my own CBD line because I was, I'm afraid of everyone's CBD, and especially when you start to get into the business, like, you realize that all the manufacturing— there's just manufacturers. There's like 5 main manufacturers in the US, and every single CBD line goes through the manufacturer. There's no quality control. They have no idea where they're getting their hemp plants. They're just like, they're all— it's all the same. There's nothing unique about it. So I was like, well, then I'm gonna have to make my own farm or find a farmer that I can trust, that I can actually go and like be hands-on.
Family think— did they think, oh my gosh, she's a little out there, like, no, obsessed with farming and growing?
And no, my family, they were like, all for it.
I remember Your mom loves health and she's kind of high energy too.
She's super big on intermittent fasting as well and she's 52 and she loves it.
Looks hot, sexy, gorgeous.
And you know what, she gained some pretty significant weight, not too much, but pretty, like 25 pounds probably and she has been doing the intermittent fasting and I've given her all kinds of tips on like just eliminate the gluten, eliminate these certain things and she looks killer. She also is working out every day now. She's like doing her walks, she does her walks in the morning.
And taking her CBD to rest and sleep.
She loves CBD.
Yeah, yeah. And if you guys really are interested in that, not that we're gonna talk about it right now, but please listen to last week's episode. Listen, the last few, because Shana's been so gracious to join me on Mondays here, and you know, it's a lot. She's traveling a lot between both coasts. You'll listen to all the shows.
Working out great though with the schedule.
Oh no, it's been great. And she's, you know, now that it's almost, you know, Thanksgiving here, I mean, it's crazy. No, tomorrow, let's share with everyone our best tips for the day of Thanksgiving? Because, you know, I'm gonna be eating turkey and bread and butter and mashed potatoes. I love all that.
I eat all that.
But tell everyone, like, obviously we're going to be intermittent fasting on Thanksgiving.
100%.
So give them— give us—
even on vacation, paint a picture for us right now.
Tell them about Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving, I mean, if you— if you don't do a day, I always say don't beat yourself up because everything in moderation, you know. If you can't make it, you can't make it. But, um, I I have to say intermittent fasting helps tremendously. Even if you get 12 hours, it's something.
Yes.
So another thing too is—
And Shanna, just remind them, you do how many hours? 18 to 20?
I do 18 to 20.
Ryan does 16.
16.
I do, I try to eat like you. I probably do more 20, 21.
You know—
Try to eat for 3 hours.
So I had, this is actually pretty crazy. So I had this, I don't know the name of, I don't know the name because I, basically a friend told me, but he's a very famous doctor who just recently invented an enzyme that's supposed to clean plastic out of the ocean. So he's like extremely like famous and everyone wants a piece of him at the moment. But funny enough, my hair guy, he was at this event that one of his clients was at and he was doing the woman's hair and the woman is a client of his. And so like she's been going to him 'cause she used to have cancer and et cetera, et cetera. So what I thought was so interesting is that, you know, they were talking about cancer and how like the best things to avoid it. And he said the only thing that is guaranteed to not get cancer is to fast at least a week, or if you can get 3 to 4 days a year.
Hallelujah. Yes.
He's like, that's the only way I can guarantee that you will not get cancer is literally like if you can do 3, 4, or a week of water fast a year, like in a row.
That I have not done. Have you done the water fast for that range of time?
I did 2 days.
I'd be open to do it.
It's actually good. It's actually not like The first day is the hardest. When you get past that 20 hours, you're like, all of a sudden, I'm not hungry. That's so weird. And then I think the trick to—
No, people think they're going to pass out, literally.
No, you won't. You get over that hump and all of a sudden, your energy level is another level. You're like—
Oh my word. Mad energy.
Mad energy.
That's what Brooke Burke says in Mountain Home.
Yeah. My trick is teas. I just make all kinds of different teas. All right.
So tell them how you hack it. So you do teas. And with stevia, what do you use?
No, I don't do any stevia, nothing. Some teas are naturally sweet at themselves.
Give them your favorite.
Roasty fennel tea. I do nettle sting leaf and oat straw, which is really good for like urinary tract. Um, so it's good to help detox while you're doing it, which is— and it's sweet.
Say that one again.
Nettle stinging leaf and oat straw. So you can buy the loose leaf, like big packets, they're not expensive. And all you do, like I have a glass container from Amazon, and you put a cup of each, or what— however big the glass container is, and you just let it soak overnight in water. And then you strain it, and you can put it in bottles in your fridge, and you can drink it throughout the day.
It's delicious, it has good flavor, super—
it has a sweet flavor to it. It's really good. And then of course you can do tons of matcha, green tea, etc. Yeah, um, there's just— there's so many different tea options once you get into it. But that, that helps kind of get you through and with energy. And of course teas are also very good for you.
So, and you guys know I love Cruise Control Coffee where it's just heavy, you know, up to, up to 2 tablespoons of a healthy fat. No vegetable fats, we avoid all our vegetable oils, all that.
MCT is my favorite.
MCT is the best. Coconut oil. I'll do sometimes a little heavy cream or butter and You know, midday, or ghee. I love ghee. And then what we've done many times in a row is like, you've had this with me, and I did this with Kelly on the show. It was so much fun. And Mark, because Ryan was gone. It was so much fun. She was obsessed with the chia seeds. Kelly, have you seen her go crazy? She was so excited. She literally— I'll have to share with you guys the video clip. It was so cute. She literally couldn't stop eating these chia seeds.
I know, it's so good.
Tell them about your love of them.
I mean, I've always— I've been in love with chia seeds. Seeds for probably since I was like 20 years old. I used to actually— so one of the people I used to cook for, he was a bypass heart surgeon and he had two little boys.
Oh wow.
And to get these boys off a crappy diet was like one of the biggest challenges I've had to do ever because you really have to learn how to make like foods delicious and like, you know, flipping and telling them it's the same thing but it's not. And chia seeds was one of their like favorite thing. Like I would send them chia seeds in their lunches.
Yeah.
So, and it was because it was one of my favorite things ever. And you can do matcha chia, you can do chocolate chia, you can put like toasted nuts in there, you can put like there's so much jelly.
We'll have to make a few together.
There's like sugar-free jellies that you can like mix in it with butter, like almond butter.
You do that? With almond butter? Really? With jelly? Like sugar-free? What do you call it? I'm kind of excited.
Peanut butter chia.
I love it. I'm all in. So guys, so here's the bottom line for Thanksgiving. Obviously enjoy it, you know, but try to do what we do. Have some teas in the morning throughout the whole week. I think the teas are really helpful. Also probiotics.
Probiotics. If you're not taking a probiotic— anytime I have a stomachache, yes, like I take probiotics every single day, right?
Daily.
But when I eat a big meal and I'm like, I get, you know, when you get to the point where you're like, oh God, I'm uncomfortable, what happens if I take probiotics? It helps a lot.
And also just the food—
water, water, water.
Yeah, lots of water. And you know, I had a pinch of Himalayan sea salt or some sort of healthy salt that has the magnesium and potassium, so we stay hydrated. I think that's a key thing this week with Thanksgiving, guys.
Stay hydrated.
Yes, stay hydrated. Wine, you're Yeah, oh my gosh, we're gonna be drinking alcohol, please do that. And then try to get some sleep if you have some time off. We've talked about CBD over all these different talks, so always listen back to some podcasts. And I think for me on Thanksgiving, like, the thing I try to do, which is new for me, is to be as mindful as possible when I eat. And so when you are enjoying your food, enjoy it, be in the moment, mindful, listen to your— don't wait for you to be stuffed. We're all waiting to feel like, oh, I gotta lay on the couch and then, you know, just watch Netflix all day. But, and that's fun, sure, but enjoy the food. And if you enjoy it and you're listening to your body and you start to get full, eat slow, take a pause. It's okay. And then if you actually don't feel like you can put more in, I mean, the old adage— remember the old adage, you got to finish your plate because people are starving in Africa? Tell them why that's not necessary anymore. Come on, it's 2020.
It's 2020 and it's just not necessary. Whatsoever. I, I mean, I, I think that is most of being in tune with your body is so important when it comes to eating. I think, you know, I struggled a lot with eating really fast, so I would eat too much without knowing, and then I would be really, really full. So I've— and not chewing enough, which is the two biggest problems I think for digestive issues, and it causes a lot of belly fat, bloating, etc. So I've really like just— I don't know, I, I guess just being aware of it. But I take my time when I eat. I make smaller bites on my fork. I was like wanting to have all the flavors of the plate, so I would make two big bites. And then, you know, just taking the time to chew, it's making an experience. And when I start to feel full— because everyone knows that moment where you're like, ooh, or if you burp a little, that means your stomach is making more room for food and not air, which means it's gonna become unbalanced.
See, hints, guys.
If you start to burp, maybe you should be like, pause, pause, pause. I'm gonna give my stomach a second. And then if you're like, okay, I actually could eat more, then you, you know, continue.
I think that's the best strategy, is to stay connected, mindful, and enjoy the holidays. And you know, one of my dearest friends is this guy who created Primal Kitchen, Mark Sisson. He's kind of my, one of my mentors. He's 64, amazing body. You've seen him on Instagram. He's like a six-pack, like incredible shape. He sells these incredible avocado salad dressings, Primal Kitchen. And he always says, you know, his key— and he's 64, looks amazing. He's got the body of like a bodybuilder, gymnast. He's in incredible shape, right? These are— bless these people, you know, they're inspirations to even me. But he tells me, and I say, Mark, you don't eat dessert, do you? And he's like, no, Jorge. And he's taken me to the Soho House in Malibu, we've done it here and there, you know. He likes to eat well and enjoy life, but he says it's a 3-bite rule, you know, 3 bites.
Of course, everything in moderation.
So you can have your apple pie, pumpkin pie, whatever it is you're having, but have, you know, if you really can do 3 solid mindful bites and you've had dinner— I mean, if you're just eating pumpkin pie, okay, 2 slices, but come on, that's not really a dinner, is that? I mean, I guess if it's a meal, like, it could be, but, but enjoy it. And then don't feel like you have to finish it all, you know? Put some whipped cream on there and enjoy it. And then I would say try to enjoy it with your family, friends, loved ones. And if you're alone on Thanksgiving, hey, make— go make, go make an effort to connect. Maybe call, reach out. I used to do this years ago with Tony Robbins, he did a basket parade to help people that were homeless, you know. And I'm not saying you have to go out there and volunteer, but remember what it's for, right? We have to give thanks, right, Shayna? And I think that's— we're not here to overeat and stretch our stomachs out on Thanksgiving. That's not the reason for the holiday. It was—
it's literally to be thankful.
Yeah. So there it is, guys. Thank you, Shayna. And you guys go out there, have a beautiful Thanksgiving week. I forgot to invite you guys to join me today for a live meeting at JorgeCruise.com. You guys know I have these live meetings and it's free for a week, so join us there. And then tell everyone where they can find you, and then obviously you've got some things coming around next year, and give them a little bit of the social on that so they can find you and then your products as well that are coming soon.
