#90 - Failure is not an option
6 Nov 2020 · 19 min
In this solo episode of the Jorge Cruise Show, bestselling author and celebrity fitness trainer Jorge Cruise frames "failure" as a mindset rather than a reality. He opens by establishing his credibility through work with high‑profile clients and recounts his own early‑life struggle with sugar, carb, and emotional‑eating addiction. Drawing on Stoic philosophy, he uses the classic "glass half‑full/half‑empty" metaphor to illustrate that perception determines whether one feels like a success or a failure. He shares personal anecdotes about a difficult childhood, the loss of his mother and father, and how those experiences shaped his view of struggle as a source of strength. The core practical segment consists of a three‑breath diaphragmatic breathing exercise designed to create stillness, followed by a repeated affirmation – "I know failure is not an option" – intended to re‑wire the listener’s self‑talk. Interspersed are sponsor reads for Primal Kitchen avocado‑oil mayo, Joovv red‑light therapy devices, and Dr. Tess’s collagen supplement, each positioned as tools for hunger control, mood regulation, and skin health. The episode concludes with a call‑to‑action inviting listeners to join his free "Fit Family" texting service for personalized support on weight loss, intermittent fasting, and fitness challenges. Throughout, Cruise emphasizes choice, empowerment, and the power of simple, repeatable habits to shift mindset from perceived failure to success.

Hi, my name is Jorge Cruise and I'm the number one New York Times bestselling author and leading fitness, nutrition, and peak performance trainer to the world's busiest celebrities. You may have seen my work with Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Kelly Clarkson, or even Dr. Oz. My career started because in my early 20s I was out of control and addicted to sweets, carbs and salty snacks, and experts told me to simply count calories to get control. They were wrong. My passion to get control of my hunger led me to find simple ways backed by science that would turn off physical hunger as well as my emotional eating instantly. And I know I can help you too. Welcome to the Jorge Cruise Show. Ta ta ta ta ta ta. I love our theme song, guys. Welcome. It's Thursday. It's Jorge Cruise. Welcome to the show. Today, we've got a really incredible show. I think for anyone who struggles with happiness, and if you struggle with experiencing happiness and joy, truly just being joyful every single day, today's show is going to change that, especially if you're the kind of person that thinks, "Oh, I've tried to lose weight. I've tried to get healthy. I've tried to stop eating sugar, carbs." I failed, I'm a failure. Because today's show we're talking about asking big. This is law number 8 in the series. And it's about failure not being an option. And we're going to talk about why that is so true. You may be thinking, oh, come on, I fail all the time. It is the only option. I don't succeed. We're going to talk about all that on today's show and really how your perception of reality is the only thing that really determines whether you're successful or a failure. You know, we are often much harder on ourselves than anyone else. Than anyone is. And being our toughest critics, we really hurt ourselves. I, I really do believe the only way we sabotage ourselves, especially when it comes to, uh, the things that matter— and remember, this podcast is the number one podcast to help you overcome, uh, addictions. And if you need radical control over addictions of sugar and carbs and salty carbs, um, salty snacks, you know, like potato chips— I mean, it sounds basic, right? But potato chips can destroy your health. They can. They did my health for years. And even emotional eating That's what this show's all about. It's to give you that control. And I would really say it's radical control over these things so you can put it in its place and finally be successful. And so on today's show, we are gonna dedicate what we're gonna talk about to this mindset of success. I'm the guest, there's no one else. We're just talking, it's you and me. And I think by the time we're done today, you're gonna have a way, a simple way to be happy today, even though the election isn't for sure yet. I know there's a lot of stress. Oh my gosh, I don't even go on Instagram Instagram right now, because everyone is so negative on whatever side you're on, the red or the blue, right? Without getting into politics, I mean, we can't control that. It's like being upset that it's snowing and it's winter, you know? It's, it's, you just, you just can't, you know? At night when the sun goes down, it's being upset that the sun went down. Well, it goes down every night, and, but it comes up in the morning. And whether the election goes our direction, whatever direction that is for you, or not, it will pass. Everything has a time and nothing, nothing on earth is forever, nothing. I've learned this over time. Nothing is forever. It's very rare, very few things are. And things like an election pass. We've gone through so many before. And weather passes. And after every winter, there's a spring. We all know it. Winters don't last forever. And we'll be through our pandemic eventually. But right now, I think what I've learned is a philosophy really that is based in Stoicism. That's about accepting certain things, the things we can't control, we have to accept them and working with them. It's a simple example that I use. I've taught this to my kids. I talk to it to all my celebrity clients. It's knowing that if you have a glass of water that is half full, you get to decide whether it's full, half full, or half empty. Notice how I could have said both. So you can decide whether the glass is half empty or half full. And you could have the smartest people in the room debate this, but no one would win because both are right. The perspective is true. The glass is both. And you'd be like, no, it can't be both. It's life. That is the best example of life. You get to choose whether you see it as half full or half empty, and the choice is yours. And I will show you a simple exercise today, breathing exercise, that's going to bring stillness into your life. And once you have a little stillness in your life, you'll sense a calm without any drugs, just through the power of breath that is going to give you the stillness and calm you need to think clearly. It's going to stop the noise. And once the noise is off and you have some stillness, some sense of calm energy in you, you can think like a grownup. And when you can think like a grownup, you're empowered because that is the way we need to be, especially if we're grownups. Now, for kids, That's different, but I don't have a lot of kids listening to our podcast. So today's show is going to be action-packed. It's really about bringing that joy back into your life. I think you're going to love it. Now, before we get into it, I need to thank our sponsors. First, I want to thank Primal Kitchen for sponsoring us. In exchange, they are being incredibly awesome, as they always are. They've been doing this for a while now. They are giving all our listeners, you, a free lemon chipotle mayo made with an anti-inflammatory oil called avocado oil, and avocado oil is incredible. It is the Mercedes-Benz of plant-based oils. I don't think there's a better oil out there, uh, not even olive oil, not flaxseed oil. This is the Mercedes, the Bentley of oils. It is anti-inflammatory. It's made from the avocado fruit and has no carbs, no protein. It's just healthy fat, anti-inflammatory, unlike canola oil, which is in most salad dressing. And mayonnaise, or soybean oil, which is horrible, just as bad as that, or corn oil. So we've got to avoid these seed oils, these vegetable oils, and go for certain oils out there like avocado. And Mark Sisson is the creator of this. He's a dear friend of mine, and he did this as a passion to make vegetables and plant-based foods taste better, and it works. But I also put the lemon chipotle on my steak, which is amazing. I put a big old dollop of it and is absolutely delicious. And healthy fats like avocado oil turn off your hunger, guys. And why— what that sense of energy— and it's not an excited energy, it's not like some crazy party, a disco ball or anything like that. It's not like that. This is a beautiful light, almost like a sunrise or sunset. I've talked about this a ton, but the light is incredible. It is unique. Their formats, their technology is cutting edge. They've just come out with a new version of it. I'm excited to get mine soon. I have an older version, but the older one, the newer one, doesn't matter. They're all incredible. And this red light also is incredibly beneficial to our skin and our joints, to our metabolism. But I do it because it really calms down seasonal mood disorder, and a lot of people struggle with that. I do. And it turns it an early morning into a beautiful morning. It turns late night into a beautiful sunset that lasts for as long as you want. And it's not the blue light that's going to keep you up at night. She is my number one expert that I'll go to when celebrities need help with dermatology and skin and beauty and tightness. And she's Stanford-trained, Dr. Tess. And one of her passions was to help people that she couldn't see in her clinics here in San Diego and Beverly Hills. And so she wanted to create a product for beautiful, healthy skin. Because if you are someone who struggles with happiness and struggles to actually get out of bed and struggles with the past or the future and any part of you where you feel like you failed, you know, whether it's with a diet, whether it's with intermittent fasting, with a workout plan, with finances, in a relationship, anything. Here's what I want to tell you. It's a choice. You get to choose success or failure. You may be saying, no, Jorge, the person left. No, Jorge, there's no money in the bank. No, Jorge, I'm 40 pounds overweight. I'm a failure. Well, you know, here's the metaphor. You know, life is like a glass of water half full. Now notice I said half full because I could also have said half empty. Which one is right? Is a glass of water half full Or is a glass of water half empty? It's a puzzle. You tell me. Are both right? They are. And that's the truth. We know that both are right because you could have the most intelligent people on planet Earth, uh, debate this and no one will win because both are absolutely right. And you're like, well, darn it. Uh, so then if that's true, you get to choose. And why would you choose something that's disempowering. Your goal is to be empowered. Life is so short. You know, one of the philosophies in life that I love is Stoicism. And if you don't know what that is, it's an ancient study of philosophy from the Romans. And basically, it's about understanding that life is short. This whole idea of carpe diem, you've heard of that, seize the day. It is short. And, you know, I was very fortunate that a lot of people in my family live long. My mother passed early. She's a part of the reason I do what I do. She passed in her in her early 60s, which was tragic and sad. My dad passed in December of this last year of 2019, but he was almost 90, so he made quite a bit by changing choices and changing his perspective over prostate cancer, and he lived 30 more years. And then the winner though in my family who's lived the longest was my grandmother Maria, who raised me, you know. And she raised me, uh, in a nutshell, to be a very good Catholic boy. And being a gay man, that did not fit in her template. And so just to say the least, without getting into it, I had a rough childhood because she knew I different. And she kind of beat it out of me, literally with a broomstick. And so I had a kind of an abusive childhood, and I could take that forever and for always and make it a victim story, you know, this whole story of how I was abused and hurt as a child. And we all have things where we have hurts in our, in our lives. And there are philosophies out there where, you know, the only way you get strong is through struggle, obstacles. You know, it's like the gym. I go to the gym, uh, or I do it at home, but when I lift weights, you know, it's to build muscle. Now you're going to be a little sore after, but is that Soreness something that builds strength or makes you broken to give up? I mean, the choice is yours. You have to see the struggle and the obstacle as empowering. And so for me, with my grandma, not only have I forgiven her and she's in heaven already, but she did pass, uh, almost 10 years ago. She made it to 103. Um, but it's something that without that, you know, I wouldn't have my incredible sons. I have two incredible sons and I wouldn't have had an incredible career that was with my best friend. Her name was Heather. The mother of my kids, we're still good friends, and I wouldn't have had that chapter in my life. You know, now it's different. I'm a little more genuine and authentic and awake because I was asleep. I really did believe that, you know, because I didn't want to be a failure. I didn't want to be gay. I was like, oh gosh, I can't be gay because that's horrible. Well, no, it's not. It's not a choice. So for me, it was about learning to see the glass half full. And so whatever that is for you, whether it's your weight whether it's failing on a diet or whatever it is you're hard on for yourself and you're like, well, I haven't been successful, Jorge. Well, have you or haven't you? Because the thing is, if you can learn from an opportunity, then you're successful. And learning, there's always a lesson in everything, including the election that's going on or the pandemic. There are lessons for us to learn from. So my challenge to you is to do that, but there's a way to get there. So I'm going to take you through it right now. We're going to do 3 breaths together. Now, if you're not someone who does a lot of deep breathing, I can tell you I'm someone who studied yoga. I did a 200-hour training program last year in New York, and breath is really what creates stillness. And so many of us do not breathe. And you're saying, Jorge, of course I breathe, or I would die. No, deep breath, diaphragmatic breath, where you use your diaphragm, which is around your stomach area, and that creates the depth of power you get from the oxygen that forces your body to create a stillness. Usually you need at least 3 deep breaths to start this practice, and then you can start to think different. So let's do one right now. We're gonna do 3 actually. So take a deep breath in with me, follow along. Deep breath in through your nose if you can. Hold. And exhale for twice the length. Let's do another one. Deep breath in. Hold and exhale out. Last one, deep breath in, hold, and exhale out twice the length. It's like magic. Do you feel it? Now, a lot of people— I've talked to people who have been ex-smokers, for example, tobacco, and when they do this, it feels like they're smoking a cigarette. And I believe half the time when you smoke, the reason you feel better is because you're breathing finally. But you don't need the tobacco or the marijuana or anything else you may be smoking. You just need to breathe. And magically, when you breathe, guys, you bring stillness stillness, calm energy immediately into your body. 3 simple breaths and it's that simple. So what do we do next? So we did the breathing. Now that we have a little calm in our body and hopefully do you feel it? I mean, honestly, I hope you do feel this. You can always text me how you think about any one of our podcasts and I'll give you the number at the end of the show. But I want you to know that with the stillness, you now are in a place to open your mind to an affirmation of success. And I've got one for you that's simple. It says the following, say it with me. I know failure is not an option. All right, let's say it 3 more times. I know failure is not an option. Stand tall. Say it with me again. I know failure is not an option. One last time. Say it with confidence. I know failure is not an option. Now, is it? Of course it is, but not if you're awake. And so if you're not awake, do the breath exercise again and say the affirmation again. You'll get there. And I'll be back on Monday, guys. I hope you enjoyed this week's show. If you haven't seen the show we did on Monday with Dr. Jason Fung, please listen to that. It is incredible. It's episode 89. And please share today's show with 3 loved ones. All right, guys, have a beautiful beautiful rest of your week. I'll see you on Monday. All right, take good care. Peace and purpose.
