So please welcome our guest, Dr. Kim. Okay. Hello and welcome to our podcast. Thank you for coming to our show today. Dr. Kim. How are you, Dr. Kim?
Good, how are you, Josh? It's my pleasure to have a podcast with you. Thank you for having me.
Great. Thank you. It's a pleasure to have you here. So, for those people who don't know about you, can you tell us what you do and how did we first meet?
I'm a medical doctor. I work at er.
Everyone. ER is emergency room.
I'm an emergency physician.
You're older than me and you don't really use English in your everyday life, but I'm very impressed by your habit and how you're able to consistently study English. So how do you do that, ER physician? So could you please tell us a little bit about how you keep the motivation and how did you reach your current level of English?
As you said, it's not easy to study English continually. Because I am very busy after finishing my work, I'd like to take a rest. But even though I am busy, the reason why I study English very hard is that I want to have a good relationship with other people. If I go abroad, if I cannot speak English, I can have good relationship with them. But if I can speak English very well, I can good relations with them. Also, I have many good chances to learn from them. I spend as many hours as I can to study English.
Many people say they want to get better at English because they want to get a promotion, or maybe they want a high score on a test. But you told me that you want to be able to have a deep conversation with people, build good relationships. It's not something you can get right away. Maybe this has something to do with your personality. Do you not already have a deep conversation in Korean with your Korean friends? So why this goal? Like, where does that come from? I really love how you're just, you know, curious. You Want to learn more and you want to talk to more people? Curiosity. Yeah, like, okay, I want to know about your habits. So what are some of the study methods you've tried before? What's working for you right now?
Some people say you have to learn newspapers, English, and you have to learn many other study materials. For example, novels and newspapers and other English dramas, movies. I tried those things, but still I cannot be satisfied with my English because I know I cannot speak English very well. So nowadays I found out, I realized that those materials are good study materials, but that's not good for me. Nowadays, I try to speak English by myself at least 30 minutes, even though those sentences are easy and easy phrases combined with easy words. Usually by myself, you don't sing anything.
Okay.
Sometimes I record my voice, but sometimes I do not. But the reason why I practice speaking English, even though those sentences are easy to practice, my muscles.
I'm glad you brought that up. I'm glad you brought that up. Bring something up. But if they don't practice, that's step one. Step number two, you have to start saying them. Sometimes you have to think of speaking practice like a performance. Performance. Many students ask me, what is the best way to learn English. It's not very sexy. It's actually very boring, very simple. Because they think it's too easy. But that's not the point. The point is you actually do it. You go through the motion, right? It's like, you know, if you want to get healthier, you go and exercise in the gym. You have to go through that motion. Go through the motion. Yeah, that's also. That's a good one.
I usually practice my English early in the morning, but nowadays I have to take care of my baby. So nowadays I study at night.
Another objection that these students have is that I don't have time. You're a doctor. You know, you treat people who are hurt. Sometimes your patients die right in front of you, which is, of course, emotionally taxing and difficult to deal with. You have a child, so that adds more complication to your life. But you just do it anyway. Things happen, but you just find the time and you just do it.
If you learn English, you have to make your own time to study.
If you have the time to order and drink coffee, you probably can figure out how to make time for English studies, too. You have plenty of time to study, 10 minutes a day. I agree. Okay. Older students come to me and they ask me, doctor, right. So when did you start learning English seriously? And how old are you right now? Yeah, I think so, too. Like your level right now. You would have no problem living in North America right now. Could you improve your English? Sure. You know, you could use different vocabulary. You could improve your intonation. I think you could live in North America and be totally fine.
Thank you.
It doesn't matter. If you put in the time and work, you'll be able to speak English very comfortably, like Dr. Kim. So here's the last question. What's your favorite English word? Okay, great. Yeah. Everybody, do not procrastinate. Do it now. Start now. And Dr. Kim. Right, right. Okay. Well, thank you so much, Dr. Kim. Podcast. That's it for today. Thanks for listening, and have an amazing day.
