WEEKEND IN MY LIFE: HARVARD EDITION! *international student*

A first-person vlog-style transcript (Julia Alvarenga) documenting a weekend at Harvard: roommate interactions, classes/meetings (women in leadership/IOP, CS51), campus activities (Yardfest, quad, HSA/Harvard Shop work), social moments (dinners, laundry, friends), brief book recommendations and a practiced speech anecdote. Tone is informal, conversational, and candid — the video serves as an introduction to Julia’s channel and a slice-of-life campus diary.

People say my eyes are brown, but I say they're green. No one can stop me from thinking my eyes are green. I have free will. I just now decided I'm creating a YouTube channel and this is my first video. So welcome to my first video. Some background information. Today is Friday and I have a research paper due at 11:59 and guess what? It's 3:46 and it's submitted. Yeah. I'm currently in my room hydrating because I realized I'm a hypocrite because I always tell people to drink water. And do I drink water? I don't. But I am trying to create good habits. This is the room. The best roomie ever. This is the best roomie ever. Hello. That's you. And then we have Krystal. Hey, up her sweet mess. Yay. I got this little mist from Bath and Body Works. It's new. It's the Gingham collection. It's vibrant, really cute. What are you doing today, Crystal? Can you share? I'm about to head to section for CS51 and then later tonight I'm seeing a musical that's fun. The Great. Oh, it's called Great Comet. Oh, yeah, It'll be really fun. Are you drinking water? I drink a lot of coffee today though. Bye. My room in the beginning of the semester used to be so clean and I had all my pillows over there. Everything was so pretty and organized. And now we don't talk about it. But let's. Let's leave. I have a meeting at 4:30 for women in leadership through the IOP, which is the Institute of Politics. And every Friday we have a speaker come and share their life stories, all the things they've done in their professional lives, personalized and it's always amazing. So today Abby Film will be joining us. And this woman is amazing. So I'm so excited. Hi, I'm Michaela. I am going to take initiative and give Julia a name for this channel. I just picked Julia with the pants.
Because she always has these cool, cool pants.
Look how beautiful. My skirt is pretty right now. Are you ready for this? I think it should be like featured on her channel and then she should get brand deals for her pants. Okay, thank you. Sponsor me, follow, subscribe and give her pants. Thanks. Thanks. What do you guys. I'm Jasmine. I want to say the same thing, but also not just the pants, her outfits and also herself we all love. What are you guys doing today?
Eating Subway.
Why Subway?
Because like all the dining halls are closed and harbor food sucks.
But why would you Choose Subway. Out of all the places, what do we have?
What are the other options? Safe space. Because Jefe's isn't real Mexican food. Felipe's isn't real Mexican food.
Food.
What else?
He knows.
He's from El Paso, I'm from El Paso.
Is that all? They. They have so many good places around here.
Give us a recommendation.
Saloniki.
Not sponsored. Saloniki Salon.
He's Greek and he. What do you have to say about this?
I've only been there like once. Was it real Greek food or. No, I mean like real Greek food from America.
Still working on slides. Hello, I'm Indra from Spain. Wait, do you want to go to Adams or. Louis? Hello. What are you guys doing here? We're just sunbathing. Are you guys free tomorrow at 7? I. You know why. Bye. Where are you from and what do you like the most about Harvard? What?
I like the most about Harvard? Okay. Is it going to be.
Yeah. Okay.
Hi, I'm Rahul. I'm from Braintree, Massachusetts. And what I like the most about Harvard is the quad.
Okay, run to the quad. Go, go. This is dinner today. What do we have for dinner? This is hp Say hi. What do you have? Today I have an off brand Popeyes chicken sandwich with fries. Oh, wow. Macaroni and Alfredo and mussels and cherry Coke. Actually. Ew, Cherry. I hate Coolio. To memorize my speech. While Helen and Ada are trying a British ice sink and Irish ice and they try all the acids. I was like calling Julia like multiple times today. Okay. I hope you appreciate this video because I had to record the same thing seven times. Not one, not two, not three, not four, seven. This is my five minute break before I have to go to the meeting. And I thought, what am I gonna share? I have nothing interesting going on. So I decided I'm going to recommend you books. Number one, the Elegance of the Hedgehog. That's my favorite book of all times. It's been my favorite book for like two, three years. And I'm looking for a new favorite book. So please recommend me the books you love. Number two, Mindset by Carol Dweck. Amazing. Every single thing about this, one of her quotes is that we like to think of. We like to think of our. We like to think of our idols and superheroes as favorite book. Number three, the little things that make my heart go boom. Have you ever heard of this? Probably not, because I wrote it and never published. However, I will be publishing it very soon. Okay. It's about a llama who finds happiness in the small things. Thank you. Favorite book number 5. Frankenstein. 4. 4. Not 5. 4. Now I actually have to go. I was gonna do my laundry before the meeting, but I don't think it's happening. I was an artist tearing up the boundaries of my soul to fit more humanity where hope. Hope. I didn't go beyond my limits. I went within closely traveling through joy, despair and the fragile threats between the two. Not a pathetic, not indifferent. But instead grateful for all the small things that truly matter to me. I'm nervous. Welcome to Seaver.
Hi, my name is Matthew. I'm a sophomore here at Harvard studying applied maths and economics. I'm one of the co presidents of Harvard College Students inspired. We're here in Siva 113 as our final rehearsal for tomorrow's conference, which I'm very excited about.
Meeting is over. So now I'm actually doing my laundry for tomorrow. Otherwise I won't have anything to wear. This is the basement of the Harbor Shop and I'm looking for teddy bears to take photos for marketing. However, we only have bowls. What do I do? Can you tell me about your day?
Yeah, you know, I just came from the Soch. I've been fasting for Ramadan and Stu. So I played Frisbee today. Ultimate Frisbee. Got really dehydrated though, you know what I'm saying? But went to the Soch, ate some food, you know, had some water, walked back. Now we here. Walking around, eating my chocolate, trying to meet up with some friends.
Are you happy? It is Saturday. Hey, I didn't even know you were filming. We are ready for legs. Let us go. Let us go. Beautiful day in the neighborhood. Depending on your neighborhood. Do you like the weather today? It's so nice. Yesterday was like really hot in the beginning and then I got super cold at night. But now it's like the perfect weather here at Harvard. We don't have time to go to the bathroom and none of the buildings have restrooms, so we have toilets outside. No, we don't. It's for Yardfest. What is Yardfest? Well, every year Harvard invites an artist to come. For this year it's Jeremiah. Jeremiah? Are you sure? Jeremiah. Jeremy. I don't know how to say his name.
Hi, my name is Nouriel. I'm probably going to study math and philosophy and maybe government. And a fun fact about me is that I can solve Rubik's physical was really fast.
Cup down. Put the cup down. There you go. Now the timer is on. This is beautiful. It's happening. Yeah, it's our first. My first. Wow. Also, later tonight, we have a dinner with hsa, which stands for har. Student Agencies, which is where I work. We have nine different agencies. And I work for the Harvard Shop, which is one of them. So we deliver high quality official Harvard merch. Oh, no. I just got a text. Happy conference day, everyone. T minus 5 hours. Bye. Since I'm practicing for my speech anyways, I figured it would be nice to record and it can serve as an inspiration for your college essay or job applications. I'm just kidding. Don't use it. But I'm going to share anyways. The week before moving to college, I stepped on a cockroach laying on the kitchen floor of my aunt's house. Now, what do you do when you see a cockroach? You may offer it a cup of coffee. You know, sit down, have a little chat. You may take a selfie with it and post it on LinkedIn. You may even do a little dance to distract it as you escape, you do you. But if you're normal like me, you either gotta scream as if you were auditioning for a horror movie or. Or run. Okay. As fast as you can. No looking back. But in that case, it was too late to run. We had an intimate exchange, that cockroach and I. I caught it before it could run away. I killed it before it could kill me. And when that happened, when I killed that ugly, hideous, yet equally fascinating being, her little belly facing up, defenseless and harmless, I thought of it as a symbol for all the challenges I faced up to this point in my life. There is no need to run because chances I'm getting killed are very low existent, yes, of course, but very low. I must assume control so that it doesn't control me. I'm in charge as long as I allow myself to be in charge. That's the intro if you want to hear the rest of it. Sorry, you're not. But you could comment below. But you're not. But maybe you could try. For my CS homework, I need to code a game that plays six degrees of Kevin Bacon. That is Kevin Bacon, apparently. I had no idea. I knew his face, but I didn't know his name. That's a problem I face constantly. It's like everyday thing that I know someone's face, but I don't know the name for the laundry room. Looks like at Harbor. Super fun. Super pretty.
So Julia is a first year studying economics with a secondary in art form and visual studies.
We just sang a little song with a friend and now we're running to catch the Uber to HSA dinner. I'm Christiana, and I have an existential crisis. So I'm going to a party, and then I'm going to church because it's Easter, and I'm wondering, what should I wear that goes to a party and also to a church? Let me know. Let me know in the comments. What should I wear? Amazing. You are so pretty. Gorgeous. Yesterday, my friend got me flowers, and I'm so happy. Now it's gonna be a happy day because I have flowers. Hi, this is Amber, the freshman dining hall. Today I made myself a salmon bagel, and it looks not so pretty, but I hope it's good. And then I also made myself a salad, and I have two. Two spoons because we're playing Assassins. Hi. When's the.
When's the music video dropping? I mean, not the music video video.
My code is not working. But the love code is not working. Can you believe we just finished the P set? We just finished the P set. We did it. Oh, we're just sitting here. Oh, why? Why are you sitting there? What's happening today? We're doing work. This is the actual Yard fest shirt for 2023. What did you get, Kai? Lots in. Hi. Who are you? I'm exhibited. Hi. What are you doing here? What do you mean, what I'm doing here? I'm walking around. Oh, where do you have a purpose? I don't have no purpose. Okay. Are you going to Yard Fest?
I don't know.
We can do what we love to do in life instead of working a torpor job that we hate. Welcome to Yardfest. Hello to Julia's vlog. We're here at Yardfest. Yay. Are you excited? I'm very excited. I'm excited for Jeremiah. I'm gonna see him perform even though he's not coming on for another hour or two. Bonjour. I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed recording it. Please let me know in the comments what you would like to see next. I hope you have a good rest of your day, of your night, of your afternoon, and, yeah, ciao.
