Vlog by Nate and Kara Buchanan documenting their return to van life: prepping the van (water filter, toilet, drawer sliders), installing new Optivolt solar panels, traveling across multiple states (including Colorado and Utah), attending an Adele concert in Las Vegas, and announcing a 30-day cross-country biking adventure. The announcement: a group will bike from Oceanside, CA to Washington, D.C. over ~30 days, targeting ~100 miles per day, using a three-seater bike with vans supporting the group. The video includes a Surfshark sponsorship read and mentions Optivolt providing solar panels.

We're back and we have six hours to get this van ready for a six week trip across the US More comfortable than the Marriott. We made it up about 13,000ft. We're driving 10 hours in Las Vegas.
What is life right now? I never thought this would happen.
Just driving our van down the Vegas strip. Is this what it feels like to walk to an airport with me? Yes.
Best day ever. I love van life.
We managed to make it at 9pm the night before the biggest adventure of our life starts.
Well, I have not had to make one of these in a while. I just have a few small things we have to do before we leave, like install new solar panels. That seems like a slightly overwhelming place to start.
You know, in one of the last videos that we filmed. In this video, Eamon claimed to have fixed his headlight. It was never fixed. Hey.
Also, this is how you can tell it's been a while since we used the van. Why is there dirt?
Okay, next up, I'm going to attempt to install the new water filter. The only problem is it's an extra safety precaution. We installed this box that holds our propane tank and this needs to come out. Not just the tank, but the whole box, which is screwed down into the floor.
Oh, I forgot this thing has to come off. Actually, I should be able to sit up here.
All right. Hopefully that was as easy as I think it was. Now all we have to do is turn the water on and see if it leaks. Final test. Whoa.
Hey.
To add to the list, Bear.
All this stuff usually takes about five times longer than we think it's gonna.
All right. Not only did we fix it, but the water pressure is way better than it was before. It used to take five minutes to fill up a Nalgene bottle.
Haven't cleaned out the solids portion of this toilet in.
A while.
Doesn't stink. Well, that went exactly like I wanted it to. And now to make more compost. Coconut break.
I think this is just gonna unscrew and I'm gonna screw a new one in.
This might be the easiest one of all.
What do you think? You gonna get the inside of your van wet the ide. To recreate the outdoor shower that we took on the Tuscany trail.
This hose is just a little short. Also, the back of it's magnetic. And I was thinking.
Add unclog the gray tank to the list. This is gonna be gross. Get ready. This has been sitting in there for a year and a half. I thought it was empty, but it was just clogged. Oh, no. Oh, no.
Oh, I'm glad you can't smell through the came. Just go ahead and apologize for what I'm about to show you. That is why the gray tank was clogged so almost two years ago now, which sounds completely crazy to say. We took this van on a trip to Baja. Honestly, the best trip we've ever taken in the van. But before that trip, I decided it would be a good idea to install a roof rack on top of the van. And in doing so, I covered up the solar panels that are attached to the roof. But I didn't realize at the time is if you only cover up even a small portion of a solar panel, it decreases the efficiency of the rest of the panel, and it pretty much made the solar setup that I have on the roof now completely useless.
And this is my attempt at fixing that. So the plan is to install these new solar panels on top of the rack and just leave the old ones as they are. That way I can avoid taking out the ceiling inside of the van. And also, the roof doesn't leak as it is. And if I pull this up, I'm going to have eight times three, 24 holes in the top of the van that I have to patch. So I'm just going to install these in the front on top of the rack. And theoretically, I have an adapter and I should just be able to unplug the old system and plug the new system in. Let's hope it's that easy. Otherwise, we're probably not leaving here today.
I don't think I'm installing solar panels today. So the idea was this little bolt was gonna slide inside this railing like this, and that's what was gonna hold the solar panels on. But it doesn't actually.
Go into the railing. Sorry, question. How do you feel about riding with three solar panels in the van until we get to Denver?
Why?
I don't know that we did that perfectly, but that's as good as it's gonna get today. Toilet, would you like to do the honors? Yes. Thank you for doing that.
It was my turn for sure.
Great hack. Maybe just add a question mark here.
Can I put my personal to do list on here? Like, take a shower, eat.
Real quick. We want to say a big thank you to Surf Shark for sponsoring this video. Now that we're back in the van, that means we're going to be spending a lot more time working out of coffee shops for a more comfortable work environment and for stable Internet. But that also means that we're going to be using Public WI fi, which can be a gold mine for hackers. And one step that we're taking to protect ourselves and that we have been taking for the last three years is using Surf Shark vpn. If you don't know what a VPN stands for, you probably haven't been watching very many of these videos. But it stands for Virtual Private Network and it encrypts all the data sent between our computer and the Internet so that no one can steal our sensitive information. But a VPN can be used for more than just security. It can also be used to unlock content that isn't available in your area. Let's say it's been a long day of driving and Karen and I just want to curl up in the back of the van and have a good laugh watching our favorite show. But Netflix removed that show. It's super easy to change the virtual location of our computer and get access to a completely new content library. If you don't already have a vpn, we highly recommend Surf Shark. It's the only one that we've been using for the last three years and the only one that will let you use unlimited devices on one account. Plus, if you use our code, Karen, Nate, you can get three months for free. And there's a 30 day free trial, so there is no risk to try it out. To get started, just click the link in the description below.
As usual, we are running behind late. Instead of the solar panels being on top of the roof, they're in the bed in the box.
It wouldn't be a real van trip if we didn't have random boxes on the bed.
We're missing the little connector pieces and the goal is to get those shipped somewhere where the van and those pieces.
Intersect, which is not here.
However, we packed kinda half of that is also still laying on the bed.
But it's all in the van.
So just two more things on the to do list. All right.
Well, I think that we can remember those two things.
I can't believe we're leaving.
Oceanside, California, here we come.
All right, first stop, Lowe's.
We are going to be living in this van again for the next six weeks at least. If all goes as planned, it will.
Be six weeks, probably longer.
And we are embarking on our most ambitious adventure of all time. And I know you always make fun of me because everything's always the biggest, the best, the yummiest, etc. But trust me when I say this is gonna be nuts. And since we're gonna be in the van for so long, we just had to fix my drawer that, I kid you not, has been broken since the Colorado Trail, which was on our first trip. This never took back in 2020.
A lifetime ago. So as we drive out to California, we're going to give you some hints about what this adventure is going to be. And then once we get to Oceanside, it's just your first hint. We'll give you the full details.
So far we have made it a grand total of three miles and we are stopping for the second time at the gas station. I honestly forgot where the gas thing was. It's all the way up here. I pulled up like it was in the back of the van.
Hit number two. We have several other people joining us and anytime Dusty and Sarah show up, you know it's going to be an uncomfortable adventure.
Tennessee, Tennessee.
Tennessee, Tennessee, Kentucky.
Oh, I didn't even know.
We were barely caught that one.
We're flying.
Kentucky. Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Illinois.
Land of Lincoln, it said.
There we go.
And.
Illinois.
Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Missouri.
Welcome to St. Louis. St. Louis. Oh, what is Missouri? Tagline?
Show me State. The slogan is not official, but it's common throughout the state. One version of the show me legend placed the slogan's origin in the mining town of Leadville, Colorado.
Is that a hint?
Yes. Oh, it is a very big hint. As to who else is joining us. Do a little brainstorming of some things in the past that we've done with this group. That was a big hint.
Getting ahead of yourselves. We're only in Missouri.
Home sweet home.
We made it.
Productive day.
All year we've been paying 200 plus dollars per night to stay at hotels. But for some reason when we're in the van, I refuse to pay $30 to sleep at a campground.
We won't do it.
All right, before it gets dark, I'm going to install some new sliders on Kara's drawer. This is what the old ones look like. We've bent these back into place about 50 on the van. So it's time to install some new ones. Riveting stuff over here. Now that we're back in the van.
Feels a little loose.
This was just supposed to be a simple project before bed.
Nice.
That was more than a bargain for.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Very excited.
Three hours later three hours later Give me a solar panel. This is another reason just to drive to Colorado even faster.
Seriously.
Oh, yeah.
I love this bed.
More comfortable than the Marriott.
This is great. I was so happy to be back.
Me too.
They say this about relationships, but I think it's even more true for Van life. Distance truly does make the heart grow fonder.
A It really does.
Coffee's ready.
Nate and Dusty went straight into Cracker.
Barrel for pancakes at 7am Best pancakes in the world.
Perks of sleeping here, I guess.
I don't like pancakes.
Another perk of sleeping here.
All right, so last night we made the team decision to book it through Kansas and Missouri and spend more time out west.
Nothing against Kansas and Missouri. We've just done this drive from Tennessee to Colorado a lot. So we have a big day of driving ahead of us.
Two big days. A big, flat, long day of driving.
Missouri, missouri, missouri, missouri, missouri, missouri, kansas.
Great.
Kansas.
Good morning, man. I love Van life. I woke up this morning and walked straight into Walmart to go to the bathroom and I saw this merch that said Go Tigers. And I realized I have no idea who the Tigers are and I have no idea where we are in the country right now. We are still making our way to the west coast and just drove into the night last night, pulled over at this random Walmart and I couldn't put us on a map right now if we tried. I think we're still in Kansas. Feels good to be sleeping at Walmarts again.
All right, driving to Colorado one more day until we can get these giant boxes off the bed. Also, I cleaned this windshield at 7pm last night. It was a bug massacre as we drove through Kansas.
Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Colorado, Colorado. What's Colorado say?
I think I saw something about Colorful.
Their slogan is Pikes Peak or bust.
Ah, Colorado. Border sign says welcome to Colorful Colorado.
It's better than the Show Me State.
Colorado.
This is what I absolutely love about Colorado and being in the van we were rolling in yesterday. I text a couple friends and we got invited to climb a 14,000 foot mountain. So last night we camped in the woods and this morning we woke up before the sun to start climbing Mount Massive.
Good morning. While the rest of the crew is hiking a 14er, I'm hanging back and having a little me day. There are a few reasons I didn't go. I have quite a bit of work I need to do. Mav needed somebody to keep him company and if we're being completely honest, I just didn't feel like it. Let's just say the next month we have an adventure planned that just really makes me want to embrace a slow, relaxing day in the van. So.
That'S what I'm gonna do. Good Luck, everybody.
Also, we'll see how this goes. I woke up with a massive headache this morning from sleeping at 10,000ft. I definitely did not plan on climbing a mountain this tall on this trip. I have everything packed into this little fanny bag and I just tag all extra layers onto it.
Hey, buddy. Hi. Oh, there's so many smells and sounds.
All right. We are almost two hours into this hike. We've just come up above tree line. We're seeing these mountains, but apparently massive is somewhere past those, so we still have a long ways to go. Also, this is Joel, crazy man who invited me on this hike. Crazy man who accept the invitation. That's me, Joel, Brandon, Sarah, Dusty and Kara. Stay back at the van.
Dusty and Sarah have Starlink. So I get to live the dream today, be in the middle of nature and have Internet.
That's Leadville. I ran with a donkey up that mountain right there. So I think the next hour of our life is going to be going up this trail. I'm guessing up this little saddle and then on top of the ridge to the beak.
It's going to be a good day for me at least. Hopefully the weather report was wrong and they don't have 60 mph winds.
I'll be sure to have a warm drink waiting for them when they get back just in case.
We made it up about 13,000ft.
We found the wind and the thin air. Check out this view. I think the same things happen all three times I've hiked a fortater. You get up close to the top and I can feel my heartbeat in my head. I start to feel a little dizzy and the world slowly feels like it's closing in.
Send my love to your new lover.
I just have to walk along this ridge to get to the peak.
I love work days. I hope they're having fun.
Joel, nice work. Woo. We did it. Thanks for the invite. Thanks for coming out, making me feel over prepared here. Brandon. Yes, sir. You look majestic sitting up there. Look at this view.
360 views. The fun part about being up here right now is yesterday morning I didn't even know I was doing this. Also, that mountain over there is Mount Albert, which I climbed two years ago in January. And the weather is much nicer today. It's about 5 degrees down here at the base. Whoa, your hair is frozen.
Good morning. It is a little after seven. What we should be doing is spending the day in Colorado installing these solar panels that are still riding around in the back of the van.
The whole reason we drove here Instead.
We'Re driving 10 hours a lot.
Las Vegas to see Adele.
Kara's number one person in the world, who she's wanted to see in concert for years, just happens to be playing. What do you call it when people do a Vegas rotation?
The Adele residence. She's only playing on Fridays and Saturdays. And guess what today is Saturday.
So we have to make it to Las Vegas before 8pm no doubt. We can find 10 plus clips on this channel of kerosene.
See if you can figure out what I'm singing.
I feel like yesterday I got to do what I wanted to do. So today is Cares Day. Cares Day is a little more expensive. If we're being honest. The Adele tickets are not cheap.
I'm so worth it.
This canyon that we're driving through right now is called Glenwood Canyon. And it has to be the most beautiful part of all of i70. Somehow they built an interstate on a bridge that goes to the middle of this majestic canyon.
We've driven this so many times and it never gets old. Oh, my gosh. Mountain goats, where they're just. They look like statues.
Oh, I missed it.
Oh, my gosh. I don't think I've ever seen this here before.
As I was saying, the most beautiful stretch of i70.
I'm about to buy Adele Diggins. We're still eight hours away from Vegas, but I feel pretty good about it.
As long as we don't break down, we should make it.
It's only 8am we have eight hours to go.
I think most people probably buy their Adele tickets before the day of the concert.
I'm doing it.
We're doing it.
I'm hitting pay processing done.
We're seeing Adele tonight. In less than 12 hours, I will be in the presence of Adele. What is life right now? I never thought this would happen. I'm so excited. I can't wait to see Adele.
We're gonna see her do that.
We are currently driving through Palisade, which is where we were planning on stopping tonight before we realized that Adele was playing in Las Vegas. Palisade is home to our favorite harvest host in the entire country. Harvest host is like this program where you can sleep at wineries and breweries for free. And there is a winery in Palisade that is not only one of the most beautiful because it's just like this green oasis that sits down in the middle of these big red rocks, but they also make some really good funky wines. So I'm a little sad we're not stopping. But it's. It's gonna be worth it. Honestly, seeing your excitement when we bought the tickets was already worth it.
Leaving in colorful Colorado.
Goodbye, Colorado.
Goodbye, Colorado. I love you so much. And Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Colorado, Utah.
It didn't have a saying on the sign. Should we look it up?
What is it? Well, this is a unique.
It can't be more unique than the show we stay.
It might be one word, industry. The word is associated with the symbol of the beehive.
All right. No wonder they put it all the time.
It's a little confusing.
This drive is like a trip down memory lane. We were out here earlier this spring in the Earth Roamer, so somewhere within 50 miles of us is the best campsite we have ever stayed at. I would share the location of the campsite here, but we have been sworn the secrecy by the Earth Rover team.
Also, good news. Sarah and Dusty got a later start because they're not as big of a Dell fans as I am and they're gonna stop at Sage and get us our favorite one.
Everything's working out.
Wow, it's so warm. Look at this. It looks like a national park, but it's a rest area on the side of the road. I might change my answer about Glenwood Canyon. This might be the most beautiful part of i70.
And there's so much oxygen.
I'm actually sweating.
Making a quick cocoa salad for lunch.
Oh.
So I filled up two bowls with mixed greens with an avocado and some kimchi and now I'm just gonna put the tofu on top. Bon appetit.
10 out of 10 lunch and 11 out of 10 view.
This is insane.
What happened there? It did. Utah.
Utah.
Utah. Utah. No. Gonna miss the sun.
Myself instead of the sign.
Tragic. This is what happens when I'm not.
Driving the Grand Canyon State. That one is a good one.
Best slogan so far.
Oh, it's the most self explanatory.
In Arizona. Arizona. Arizona. Arizona. Arizona. Arizona. Arizona.
Arizona.
Arizona.
Did we do that at the same time I had him comes in.
Yeah. 82 miles to Vegas.
Oh my gosh.
There it is. I can't believe we're here.
Are we just driving our van down the Vegas Strip?
Las Vegas Boulevard.
So there's actually a campground on the Las Vegas Strip that I was really excited to stay at. But because we planned this last night, it is fully booked. So tonight we're staying in a hotel and then Sarah and Destin will meet us here tomorrow night and we're gonna camp at the campground this Girl is on her way to the Adele concert, and no one is going to make her late. Just try to keep up. Is this what it feels like to walk to an airport with me?
Yes.
Go, go, go, go, go, go.
We did it.
Well, welcome to my show. Thank you so much for coming.
Oh, my gosh. I think it goes without saying, that was the best concert of my entire life and probably top three just best nights of my life.
Overall, it is the best money that I have ever spent on Cara. It was so much fun seeing her so happy.
It was everything I've ever wanted. Like, my expectations were so high, and they were vastly exceeded. Our seats were the front row of the mezzanine level, right in the middle, so there was no one in front of me, and I just belted every lyric to every song for two hours straight and only cried on the first two songs.
I'm gonna be honest. I knew way more Adele songs than I thought I did.
Yeah, you had fun too, Danny. It was fun. She's honestly a comedian. Like, when she wasn't singing the most beautiful voice I've ever heard, she was cracking me up. Like, she's so spicy and has so much attitude, but she's also so elegant and beautiful. It's this combination that I am so in love with. I didn't think I could love her anymore, and I do. All I've done all day is just watched all the videos I took on my phone. I'm just trying to relive the night as much as possible.
So last night, we almost missed the concert dessert because we could not find anywhere to park this van.
It was so stressful.
Pretty much every hotel has parking garages that this van will not fit in.
We drove around in circles for two hours.
We have literally been trying to find a place to park the van for over an hour. This is craziness.
So we ended up just in this random lot where the security guard told us, your van is considered oversized and you're gonna get a hefty fee.
And so we left, drove around, still couldn't find parking. And we were, like, paid a bunch of money for the Adele concert tickets. Even if they charge us a fee, that's what we have to do.
So we came back and we parked here. Even though he told us we were gonna get fined, we're about to go.
Through the little gate thing and figure out how much we have to pay. I think this should cost around, like, $35 if we didn't get a fine. $23?
Are you serious? We got Away with it quick before anybody sees us.
Yeah, let's do it.
Wow.
I am shocked.
I don't know if we got lucky or if we discovered a Vegas hack, but it only cost $23 to park overnight behind the Westin. Amazing.
Best day ever. It was so worth it.
RV parking to the left. Okay, when gates closed, please pick up house. Oh.
Oh, it's opening.
It's opening. It's a parking lot. And it was much easier to find.
Than last night.
We have four days until we have to be in Oceanside, California to start this epic adventure. And Sarah and Desi have never been to Vegas before. So we've decided to spend one more night here. But tonight, we are actually camping on the Strip. There is a old rundown looking hotel called Circus Circus Circus that advertises an RV park on the Strip. It's more like a giant parking lot that has some electrical hookups, but there are bathrooms. And this has to be the cheapest place that you could possibly stay on the Strip.
But it's hot.
It's toasty.
Blue. Screws, blues, clues. We're totally. I don't even know if that's how the song goes.
I think it is. This is the biggest hint yet.
But. But you may have noticed that we don't have a bike with us in the van.
That is correct.
So do with that what you will. Dusty and Santa should be here soon, and it should be a fun night. And even though this is just a hot, empty parking lot with some hookups, it is pretty cool that you can camp on the Las Vegas Strip. Like, we're within walking distance of all the major casinos and pretty much anything that you would want to see while you're here.
Good afternoon. I have terrible news. Last night, we drove from Las Vegas here to California, and we missed the state line after all that. The last one. But now we found ourselves parked in the desert amidst these incredible Joshua trees. And this feels like the perfect place to install these solar panels that have been riding around in the van with us for the last week. I honestly just didn't realize how much fun we were gonna have on this trip. I thought we were just gonna drive a little, work a little, drive a little, work a little. But instead, we've climbed a 14er, had a night out in Vegas, went to the Adele concert. But Kara has requested that these solar panels no longer live in our bed.
Please get the boxes out.
It feels like the desert, so it's time to get to work.
I already forgot that when we were working on this at my parents house we had ladders set up. It's going to make things more difficult.
Hooray. I got the hardest piece off.
Okay, so let me show you what I'm trying to do up there. This is one of the bars that goes across the top of the roof rack. It has these little grooves in it and I've got these little black pieces. This is what got shipped to us in Colorado. And these black pieces slide into the slot that allows us to attach these brackets and then we can attach the solar panels to those.
Okay, so I've got all the little pieces attached to the bottom of the solar panel. I've got the thingies, very technical build, all slid down in the railings. Theoretically I just have to get the railings in the right spot and attach the solar panel.
You're not going to believe this, but sometimes I do things without thinking them through. I must have installed everything in the wrong order. Three times I had to undo, redo, undo, redo. But three and 12 hours later, the first solar panel is on the roof. I think the next two are going to go by a lot faster and there is still a chance that I finish this before sunset.
I.
Love van life.
Believe it or not, I did get the solar panels installed last night.
And I've been counting on this working the whole time. But literally all I had to do was unplug the old one ones, plug the new ones in and the solar on top of the van is cranking.
And these boxes are going straight to the dumpster.
Thank you again to optivolt for sending us those solar panels. I actually love their tagline which is shade happens. You guys get it. They, they also work in the shade. I thought I'm above the rack so that they won't get the shade from the rack. But even if we're like sitting under a tree and they're partially shaded, we should still be getting really good solar which will be a game changer for this trip.
They also sent us us five bags of amazing coffee beans.
So they did not pay us to say any of this, but they are on our good side. Okay, now from here we just have a short. Well, what I'm considering short at this point in the trip, four hour drive to Oceanside and once we get there, we'll give you the big reveal.
Somehow we managed to make it. At 9pm the night before the biggest adventure of our life starts. We are officially at the start line in Oceanside, California. We have so much to do.
What a beautiful sight this is.
Finally.
All right, this is the biggest hint of the video.
We came here to sell a bike on Craigslist. So we have one, two, three vans and a three seater bike.
The entire journey to the West Coast, I've been dreaming of announcing this secret adventure on the beach, in the sunshine, with all our friends.
But here we are in a laundry room at 10pm but that doesn't matter. It does not damp it, the excitement. And that's exactly how this crew rolls tomorrow with Dusty and Sarah and Rick and Beck and Evie and Frankie and all three vans, six adults, two kids. We are all biking across America for.
The next 30 days. We are biking 100 miles per day.
From Oceanside, California to Washington D.C. but not just on any bike, not everybody on their own separate bike. Bike. We have one bike, one bike, a three seater random bike. So the plan is three adults pedaling the bike and then the other three adults moving the van and we all just move together across the US Just like this. That's as much of a plan as we have. As of now, we don't know when.
We'Re leaving, we don't know where we're.
The only thing we know for sure is that we are dipping that bike's wheel in the Pacific Ocean tomorrow. And 30 days from now, we're dipping the wheel in the Atlantic Ocean.
And it's going to be an unforgettable adventure. The longest, most ambitious adventure we have ever attempted.
We are so excited to share these videos with you. But before we do, there is one special video coming up. When we got back in the van, before we left Tennessee, I filmed a video that I have promised on this channel since January of 2022. And that is a Van Trooper. With my 88 year old grandfather in his restored VW van, we'll take your van and ours on a Buckana camping trip. It's gonna be a little different. It's very personal, but I hope that you'll enjoy it because Pop is one of the most special humans in the world. And then after that video is published by Trippy Gates, Woohoo.
I will be posting daily updates on Instagram, so if you're not following us there, you've already missed out on two weeks of daily updates link below.
Also, I announced this weeks ago in our newsletter, so sign up for that as well if you want to be the first to know things in the future.
I just got to get the 10 million Kroger bags that Kara put in here out.
You're not following us there. You've already missed out on two weeks.
Of daily updates link below. Also, I announced this weeks ago in our newsletter, so sign up for that as well if you want to be the first to know things in the future.
I just gotta get the 10 million Kroger bags that Cara put in here out.
Are they, like, waiting on us to do something? Bloop.
I haven't finished my coffee yet. Nate.
It's so hot.
I can't live this way any longer for some reason. I have a Q tip in my pocket. It's a clean cute.
That's all clean to me.
Oh, it's just got pocket fuzz on it.
Let's go, guys. We're always waiting on you.
That was a joke. Destin and Sarah live their life waiting on us in every way. Do we have any special occasions here tonight? I drove 10 hours in a van. All right, this is take it all the girls just take.
