This is day two in Hanoi. When we originally started this vlog, we said we would do it six days a week, and we've done seven basically the whole time. But we got this awesome suite at the Hilton, and there was some boring stuff that needed to be taken care of, like laundry.
A magic folding fairy folded all of my clothes in the washroom, going to.
The grocery store and getting stuff like deodorant.
So yesterday we exercised our right to take a day off.
We thought yesterday was gonna be pretty boring. And then we ended up having this really fun experience last night. We met these people from Oregon and went to dinner with them, and it ended up being this hilarious dinner experience. The table next to us where all of these Vietnamese guys having dinner together.
I think we have a picture. We'll put it in.
Here's the picture. Those are the guys. They started bringing us all of their food to try. And they're just cracking up. They don't know any English. We don't know any Vietnamese. And it was so funny. We got to try pig's ear wrapped in some kind of leaf and this crackery.
Sesame seed cracker thing. It's like this big.
And we had no.
Order some noodles and this, like, pork rice stuff wrapped in another leaf.
And it was a blast. But we didn't have the camera.
I feel like we need to talk again about how good it feels outside.
It's like 60 to 70 degrees here since we got here. Is it like. Yeah, it's all manual.
Today is Easter Sunday. Hey.
We're gonna attempt to find a church. There's one that's supposed to be like a five minute walk down the road.
It's also a Roman Catholic church.
We're not Catholic. So this is the first time that I've worn this collared shirt that I brought. I have no clue.
Following around for three months.
I have no clue if this is appropriate dress for church. I don't have a suit, though.
This is the place we ate last.
Night, except it had like 50 million more tables.
I think she wanted us to come back and eat this morning.
We're gonna go back there.
I'm giving us like, a 25% chance of actually going to church. We have no clue what time it starts.
Do you know where we're going?
I took a picture of this off the computer last night. We don't have Google Maps here. I think we're on this blue line currently. Let's keep walking this way.
Hmm.
That kind of looks like a church.
It's kind of churchy. The guy kind of looks like Jesus.
I think this might be the church.
We're gonna go stand in front of the gate and see if they'll listen.
I think they're doing an Easter egg.
Kara's made a friend.
I was talking to that little girl and she said, today, today.
And I said, it's Easter. She said, no.
The father. And I said, resurrected? She said, no, he's alive. She was so cute.
I think here instead of an Easter egg hut you get ice co.
I love that they are having a party in that shirt.
I thought Taipei had a lot of motorbikes.
Hey, nothing from.
They just park them wherever they want on the sidewalk, even if it's blocking the whole thing. Gotta walk out in the middle of the road to get around all the motorbikes. And then you go out on the road and almost get ran over by a motorbike. I can't pin it down, but for some reason I just like love this city.
So far, none of the locals care about us that we're here. Like they are not here to please us.
We're like. I think the old city is the really touristy part. And since we're staying at the Hilton for free, we're kind of in more of like the business district. And so like it's us and all of the locals and it's off.
Our t mobile phone service doesn't work here, so we came back to the room for like 20 minutes to download Google Maps offline so we could figure out how to get to the old quarter for lunch. Kara promised me that she wasn't gonna go to sleep.
Hey, I thought you weren't going to sleep.
Well, I got her out of bed. Now we can go exploring.
I hope they're not out of buns at the Bun Me place.
Me too. I'm blaming it all on you. So far, so good. The little blue dot seems to be following us.
I kind of want my cardigan.
Oh, before we left the room I said, you should bring your cardigan. It's gonna be cold. What did you say?
It's not that cold.
It felt great outside this morning. Alright, go back and get your cardig.
Look how many scooters.
That was insane.
This is pretty.
We have officially hit the touristy part of Hanoi. Thank you.
Just bought some donuts for that lady.
She was a greedy little donut seller.
I did just want one though. And somehow I ended up with six.
Oh, it's filled with nuts.
Our friends from last night told us about the best sandwich shop in the city. And since we ate some pig ears, we figured we deserved a sandwich.
We do. That one says 34 and we're supposed to be going to 25. I think we may be close. Oh, yeah, I see a sandwich shop.
25. Let us know how the best sandwich in Hanoi is.
Whoa.
There's a lot going on in this sandwich.
We had three.
This is like a party in a bun. He put two different meats in it. Cucumber, some kind of herb.
I think it's pickled carrots.
I'm giving out free tea with floaties in it.
You think it's a tea leaf?
So much stuff.
The axe accidentally found the mall.
Yay.
That was nuts.
Well, I've never seen anything like that.
Like every Southeast Asian market we've ever been to duffed in a huge warehouse.
And it's all in bulk. Like it's coming straight out of the factories straight into the.
Some of the cities we've been to, like, kind of run together. But they. There is nowhere like this place.
You can't even walk in a straight line right now.
Like a motorcycle. Somebody selling you stuff. You need some hair. You can get it there. That's weird. Belts. A gazillion of them. Tons of package shirts. I don't know why.
We could not pass up these buns. Look how big and scrumptious. How could you walk by a 50 cent pork bun this big? It's so different.
It has rice in it. That's so good. Thank you. She doesn't care.
She does not care. Oh, she has the girl version. We can match. We can climb Everest and match. Oh, I love this place. Kara, how much was that north face jacket?
Like US$25.
It's apparently time for coffee. What is yogurt? Coffee.
I think I want black coffee.
Hot black coffee.
What we're drinking.
There's coffee in a bottle being poured into the bucket. What is it?
I have no clue. Looks like motor fuel. Motor oil.
That's what she put in our drink.
How do you feel about it?
Feel like we're doing the local thing. It's us and about 50 other locals.
Everybody else is doing it.
Whoa. That is.
Sweetest. Most bitter coffee I've ever had.
That is extremely sweet and bitter.
It's getting better.
After your mouth gets over the initial shock.
It's just a lot at once. It surprised me.
We conditioned ourselves to drinking strong coffee, though. It's all for this moment and everyone.
Is sitting on the sidewalk. It's so cute.
Just having a little Easter Sunday coffee time.
It's the tourist parade.
Throw us some candy.
I feel like we're ruining all of their photos by being the white people in here. Now we're going to be in all of their photos.
Tourists in the parade seem to think that it's really funny that we're sitting here having coffee with all the locals. We think it's funny that they're in the parade. This vlog is going to be like 20 minutes long.
And look at things.
Love it.
All right. We called our bank. They said our debit card should work here. This is our last chance to get money.
Here goes nothing.
If it doesn't work, we have no other options.
2 million.
Come on, Money. What?
That was an option. I think maybe it doesn't have any money in there.
Going for round two. We are approaching ATM number three. The machine has eaten the card.
Give it back.
Nothing is happening.
Here we go.
PIN is invalid.
Your card.
I don't know. My pen.
It's one of two things.
Don't tell the camera.
I think I hear money.
Something is happening. We may be getting money.
It just says, please take your card.
Give us our money. Oh, I took it back. Thanks.
Money.
We have money.
It worked.
I've never been so happy to pay a ten dollar ATM fee.
Yay. Let's do it.
I have no clue what these people are smoking, but everybody has these really long pipes. That guy's got the right idea.
Halt.
I like your strategy.
That's one way to move into your penthouse apartment.
Whenever you want to save your donuts.
For later, hook them on your belt.
Just hook them to your belt.
Can't eat six donuts before lunch together. Something with it. Won't fit in my pocket.
You could just hold them. This lady just came and gave Nate her.
She didn't want to carry it anymore. The first night we were here, we got some mis pho and it was phenomenal. So tonight we're gonna try some duck pho because we're in Vietnam, so we're gonna eat phone.
