BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION at Patpong Night Market | Bangkok

A travel vlog by Nate and Kara Buchanan documenting a day in Bangkok centered on food, sightseeing, and birthday shopping. They arrive in Bangkok, attempt to visit the Grand Palace / Emerald Buddha Temple but defer entry due to dress and crowds (mentioning a $28 fee), sample street food (coconut, sticky rice, pad thai, mango sticky rice, Thai pancake), take a long bus ride ("stop one of 22"), and spend the evening at Patpong night market where Kara shops for birthday items under a negotiated budget. The tone is informal, conversational, and light-hearted with moments of mild frustration (scam attempt near the palace).

McDonald's has good coffee.
Whatever these things are.
Meat pie.
We got our coffee. So we're ready to start our first day in Bangkok.
I am so excited for these next two weeks in Thailand. Ever since we came here last year it's been my favorite country in the world. But I'm really curious to see if it's still my favorite country the second time around or if it was just the newness of Asia so far. It's still the cheapest and the yummiest in my opinion.
Stinkiest right now. We got into Bangkok last night. Today is gonna be our only full day here because tomorrow night we're taking a night bus to Koh Tao. So we're gonna try to fit in as much festival starting with the Emerald Buddha Temple.
Please do not trust anyone around the palace who tries to delay or divert your visit. What in the world?
We've had at least three people try to tell us that the temple didn't.
Open till 4pm and the speaker just said that the last admission is at 3:30. Why would they tell us that?
I have like a really good perception of how nice and helpful all the people in Thailand were.
They're called the smiling country.
And now to know that we were getting scammed is going to make me a lot more cautious the rest of this trip.
I'm so upset. Strike one, Thailand.
Two sticky rice. Are we getting coconut? One coconut.
Thank you.
The pad Thai here was a little pricey. It was $2 instead of one.
So we got an ice cold coconut and some sticky rings. I've missed rice in a bag.
Just plain rice.
No answ.
How much for ice cream? 40.
This looks so good.
So good. We're in trouble.
I really like the milky stuff she put on there.
We've pretty much circled this entire grand palace which I'm pretty sure is at least a mile of walking.
It's huge.
We're finally seeing a lot of tourists. So I think we're about to find the entrance here. Is getting appropriately dressed for the temple.
My dirty shirt on from yesterday.
Apparently we were not appropriately dressed. My shorts did not cut it.
Priest didn't cut it. Gotta wear a skirt.
Gotta get some fans. This is madness. So many umbrellas.
So many people. Change of plans. We weren't wearing the right clothes. There were a million and it was Gonna cost us $28 to go in the Grand Palace. I'm not saying we'll never do it. We're coming back. There was literally a squirrel like two inches from the camera.
I think it's Gonna jump on us.
Before we say we could each get 12 plates of pad thai for that.
I know some people will judge us for not going. And I'm not saying that we'll never go. We'll be back for a week. If we do go, we will dress appropriately and go really early morning when there aren't so many people.
So we're just gonna get some more food.
That's where we like to spend our money.
And that's the preview of the Emerald Buddha temple. Hope you enjoyed it.
More street food Noodles.
This is F food Thailand style. Kara, are you excited about tonight?
I'm really excited about tonight.
So Kara's birthday is on the 27th. Make sure you wish her happy birthday. We're gonna celebrate a little early tonight since Bangkok has good night markets with cheap stuff. Instead of getting her a present this year, I've given her a budget and we're going to the night market. I'm gonna have a great attitude about her shopping.
It's gonna be so much fun.
What do you want?
I want Sung.
Want a bathing suit, A dress.
Told me only three things.
And maybe a skirt. A romper. Fancy one.
As long as it fits in the bus.
And a tank top.
The plan is to take the bus from these squiggly lines to these squiggly lines. 22 stops. I guess we'll just have to count.
That was stop one of 22.
I think we're here.
And according to all of this, I think we made it to the market.
I got so much.
World's worst negotiator.
Right here.
Nate negotiated these for me to turn.
The camera on, but the negotiation was heated so we couldn't show it on camera. We paid 550 for those. She's bought one thing, so now we're allowed to get food. How much for this?
70.
70.
Let's do it.
2 bucks. Yep. Decided to go with one of our favorite Thai dishes. Mango sticky rice. Sounds very good in the hot weather. Bowl of hot noodle soup. Just wasn't gonna cut it.
Is it as good as you remember? So good.
Yeah.
Ain't no wrong with sticky white rice and mango.
Thai pancake.
When you add that much butter and oil to something, it can't be bad with chocolate.
It's almost 11 and I'm still having a good attitude. Let that be noted.
What time is it?
Almost 11.
Are you serious?
Yeah. Will you take 250?
Oh, please, give me more.
No, sorry.
Take 250. You typed 250 earlier. Okay. We came back no, she says you charging. She's charging 300.
Oh, 250. 250.
250.
I got all three things that I wanted. Sunglasses, bathing suit, Bromper.
I think she's pretty excited. She's walking with a little extra pep in her step right now.
We're leaving. Cara decided to roll over her 11 extra dollars tomorrow.
Great, successful night of shopping. Nate even got a pair of sunglasses.
So now we're going home.
Hello, baby.
Sorry.
Here in Bangkok before really everybo. No, we just bang it. So we got in the bang health and gluts.
Tenfolds. Stay good. How does it look?
This is the current state of our hotel room.
