DELICIOUS MAURITIUS // street food heaven

A first-person travel vlog (YouTube) by Nate Buchanan documenting a day in Grand Bay, Mauritius. The hosts attempt a sea-kayaking trip with Yamaya Adventures but miss the meeting point, spend the day exploring local street food (dalpuri, samosas, sandwiches, chili sauce, McFlurry), solve phone/SIM card issues, and prepare for the next day's adventure. The tone is informal, observational, and food-focused.

Today we are going on an all day kayaking trip with Yamaya Adventures. But first we have to figure out how to get to our meeting point on the local bus.
This doesn't go there.
Okay.
Do any buses on this route go there? Okay. Thank you.
Oh thank you.
Wrong bus. Come on.
Good morning.
This man has offered to take us. Do you know where the Winter Supermarket is? Yeah, it's near. Okay. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Okay, bye. Thank you very much. Bye bye.
Take care. Messi.
Messi.
No, no, no. Thank you.
Bye bye.
Claw worked out. Are we certain this is the right one?
I mean not a hundred percent. But I feel pretty good about it.
The wrong. Okay. So we are currently at the wrong winter supermarket. About 15min from where we should be.
So now I just figured out how to make an international call to Mauritius with our T mobile service. I'm trying to get a hold of the guy to see if he's left us or if we need to jump in a taxi. My apologies. Sorry. Sorry to make the group wait. They left us. The rest of the group was getting impatient which I totally understand. I feel horrible for making everybody wait. So now it is 9:30am and we have a full day of something.
I feel bad about the whole situation. Situation this morning making everyone wait on us because we are in the wrong place. But it's kind of chilly and rainy this morning.
Anyways, hopefully we'll be able to reschedule because I was really looking forward to sea kayaking.
But I am looking forward to a day at our place here in Grand Bay because I didn't think we were gonna get to spend any time here except for at night.
Had a lot of adventure scheduled.
Yeah.
So today will be more relaxing. We'll figure something.
We're back at our place. There could be worse. But it's been an afternoon.
We spent the rest of our morning enjoying our time here and now we're gonna go find some lunch.
So. To grand by 24. To grand by. It's 24 piece. Go.
We got in another car instead in a bancheta.
Apparently these are a thing. Same price as the bus.
Correct.
We read about this little street food place that has this soup that has these little dumpling things in it and we're gonna try to find it.
It's supposed to be like one of five things to eat while you're in Mauritius. And they said the best place to eat it was here in Grand Bai. So we just took the cab right down the road. Now.
We just had to Find it.
Assuming this is French.
I don't know what to order. It's always a good sign. The only people here are local people feeling good about this place.
And nothing is translated into English.
Yeah.
I can get like a variety.
Can ask.
Can I get all of it?
One a week. Uhhuh. This was chicken, vegetable and chicken.
Okay.
This also vegetable and chick. Okay. Okay. Yeah.
Chicken and prawn.
Okay.
Chicken and leave. Yeah. And then fried vegetable. Okay. And.
Okay.
Yeah.
It looks a lot like yesterday's. I'm really excited.
It's just as good as yesterday.
Maybe even a little better. Quickly falling in love with the mauritian chili sauce they've had it with like every meal. It's the same spicy sauce that we had on our roadies yesterday. And I put it all over my dinner last night. It's like really hot, really good.
Yummy.
And this is our receipt.
I'm going to go pull the whole hold enough money out that I think should pay for lunch and see how much they take from me.
How'd it go?
Great. We spotted some more street stalls as we were riding over here in the taxi. So we're going to go see what else we can find.
I think we found them. What kind of samosas do you have? No more samosas.
What is dal pury?
No.
Dog purple.
Going to see what this man has. Do you have doll Purry? Yes. What is it? It's like a pancake. Like this? Yeah. Oh okay.
What samosas do. No samosas.
Our first two stalls don't have any samosas left.
Thank you very much. Not a bad view to enjoy my first dalpuri. This looks extremely similar to the roadie that we had yesterday. The bread's a little yellower. I think there's a little bit more filling. But it's called dull. Perry.
I shouldn't have told him a little spicy. I should have let him go spicy on it.
That's spicy enough.
Like curried vegetables in it that are a little lukewarm. The guys yesterday was way better. Bummer. So maybe I like roadies better than dog curry. This should be the postcard of why people should come to Mauritius eating cheap street food on a beautiful beach with like a million sailboats behind me.
I would come come to Mauritius. Now I'm on the hunt for my samosa coast.
Like a samosa. I think we found them inside this unrefrigerated glass box.
Can I get some open?
Yep.
We found them.
What is it? Baguette with chicando.
What Sauce you want?
Huh? Your favorite.
What are the options?
You want minus ketchup? Chili.
You want chili? Yes.
You want.
This? Perfect. No. One minute.
Nice.
Thank you very much.
We were on our way out. We thought we were done, but this guy pretty much demanded that we get a sandwich. We thought we would try it.
Oh. Ran over.
I'm glad he stopped us. The sauce on the sandwich was really spicy, so we went out looking for ice cream and.
Slightly embarrassed. Thank you. Thank you.
Kara, tell us what a McFlurry tastes like.
I'm actually really excited about this. Since we've been traveling, I have had the hardest time finding chocolate. Like, everyone just has vanilla. But guess who has chocolate.
Marisha McDonald.
It's authentic. McFlurry.
Arrows.
Thank you.
It is now almost six o'. Clock. I laid down around three and told somebody to let me take a 20 minute nap. Let me sleep for way too long.
Now we're running to the store to grab snacks for our adventure tomorrow. Hopefully we go to the right place this time. We're also going to try to do something that we've never done before, which is pick up a SIM card. So that way if we are sitting at the wrong location, somebody will be able to call us and tell us where to go.
Usually we have service in whatever country we're in because we have an international phone plan with T Mobile, but it only works in 140 countries and this is one of the ones. It is not working.
Let's see if we can figure this out.
I've literally never changed out a SIM card. Totally making this up as I go.
Dang it. Too big. All right, let's see if we can figure this out.
I think Kara's gonna be mad about that. Cara, I did something bad. I bent your earring.
No, that's not gonna work. One more.
I got.
Worked.
I don't think he shaved enough of this stuff off of this.
What?
Disco dinner.
Disco plate number two.
The buffet tonight was Chinese food and it was so great.
Been a lot of food today. Hopefully you enjoy watching us eat.
Yeah.
Going back to the room to try to get the SIM card thing figured out. It worked.
Had to call T mobile, get them to unlock the phone so I could use a different SIM card. But now we have a phone that works here, so hopefully we won't get left behind for our adventure tomorrow.
This one's even purple.
Look at that.
Morning. I like your tiger.
This man has the tiger in the back of this car. Oh. This is what the inside of a Mauritian McDonald's looks like such great content. Karen. Nate.
