Hosts Nate and Kara conduct a DIY food tour in Zeist, Netherlands, sampling traditional Dutch foods at multiple local shops and market stalls. They try items including a raw-beef sandwich, raw herring with onions, Dutch licorice, oliebolen (fried dough balls filled with pudding), croquettes/frikadel from a vending-machine-style hot-food wall, Tompoes ("Tom Pus/Tom Pals" pastry), and various coffees; they encounter about 11 of their planned 15 foods before ending. The transcript is conversational, reactions-focused, and notes small cultural facts (e.g., herring season ends in July).

This trash can is amazing.
Very deceiving.
Into the bottomless pit it goes.
That thing's empty. Today we are going on a DIY food tour of Zeist. We've been staying here all week, and we just haven't been able to explore it very much, except for when we're running. And so we're going to eat our way through the city.
So we've talked to three different people who are all from the Netherlands, and they've given us a long list of foods that we needed to try while we were here. We've already tried three of them, and.
Gouda, Dutch pancakes, and thick cup rice.
Today we're on a mission to mark off the rest.
We don't have an exact plan, but we've scoped out some restaurants on our run, and we're gonna start with those.
First stop, we're having a brug. I don't know how to say it, like, most things on my list, but I think it's just the sandwich. I think this says Brugie's World, Brugie's Warehouse.
How are we gonna choose? We want to try the most Dutch sandwich that you have.
The maestro.
So you have to try them all. So you start to the left above. And this is the most eaten here. Okay. But yeah, it's raw beef, so it's delicious. Okay, we'll try it.
The people here told us that the most eaten sandwich is the car pocket.
Bowl.
And it is raw beef. We'll see our first brunchy.
It's delicious. Also think this is my first time having raw beef.
All these toppings on it are amazing. I love the sauce. This is great. So here's the raw beef. There's salad, pine nuts, capers, cheese, and really yummy dressing made out of balsamic almond brew.
Thank you so much.
Have a good day. Thank you.
All right.
The Kara and Nate Dutch food tour is off to a great start.
How so fun.
Off to the second place, which I think is going to be dessert. We're going to switch it up. There's no need to eat whatever we see next meal. And then dessert. Yeah, whatever we run into.
And we have, like, four desserts on our list at least, which means Nate is eating four desserts today.
Unfortunately, they're not chocolate.
Yeah, I don't think there's a lot of chocolate.
I think Dutch chocolate might be a thing, though. Is it a thing?
I don't know. We may have just gotten really lucky and stumbled upon a market.
Oh, you think they have herring here? Excuse me. Is this raw herring.
Do you eat it just like that? Yes. Yeah. Yes. Can we try raw herring prepared, whatever, like, however you eat it. With onions or. Okay.
Oh, my gosh.
Holy day. Yes.
Put some onions on there. I guess my breath is gonna be so good. This is our second food today and our second raw meat today.
That was a big bite. That was brave.
Oh, good. Yeah, I like it.
Are there buns in here?
Oh, yeah. Did you eat the buns?
It's really nice.
I think I like raw herring sashimi with onions. Yeah, it's, like, really tender.
The season for herring ends in July, and then they freeze it in salt water to keep it. So we're eating raw herring that's been since July, but it's actually kind of delicious.
Thank you very much.
Thank you. Bye. Thank you. Next up, raw chicken. Just kidding. Cheese. We've already had too much of that, though. Found a candy shop. Oh, you can smell the licorice from here just a little bit.
Perfect.
So the next thing we're trying on our food tour is licorice, but it's not your average licorice. This is Dutch licorice. Fun fact. It says the country boasts in the highest per capita consumption of the sweet in the whole world.
Give me, give me, give me. I usually don't like licorice.
This one almost smells chocolatey, though. And the guy told us that the coins were the most traditional.
That's very hard.
Well.
I haven't. I haven't even been through it yet.
Fast forward to this part.
It would literally take me the rest of the day to eat this entire.
But it's not bad. It's the Dutch pastime. It said I don't feel like.
It's, like, as bitter as licorice that I've had in the past. It's sweeter.
There's a cute little man. We bought it from his little candy shop. Sorry.
Much better than expected. I've been eyeing this place on our run for the past week. It is so hard to run past the smell.
This is what we're here to try.
Hello.
Hello. Yay.
What's in this one? Pudding. Pudding. I think I'm all. The one with pudding. Get the pudding.
Is it pronounced Oli bolen?
Oli Bolen? Yeah.
Oli bolen. Woohoo. Nate's dream come true.
So I believe olie bolin translates to fried dumpling. Oily fried dumpling, something like that. Fried oil ball. I don't know, one of those things. But basically it's a massive donut. And this one Is filled with pudding and has some kind of chocolate.
That's so good. You want some chocolate piece? Yes.
Thank you.
Moving right along.
We also had Bitterballen on our first day. But I forgot to add it. So I've already added it and marked it out.
Kara, we're supposed to be on a food tour, not shopping.
Shopping is very low.
Get out of here. The mixture of like raw herring and the grease from that donut in my mouth right now is really weird.
Don't forget the raw onion.
It's all. And licorice. Yeah. My mouth is funky alright. At this point we're just wandering down the main street of Zeist looking for other restaurants that may have foods that are still on our list.
We just found something that we weren't sure we were gonna find. In Zeist in the Netherlands they have these things that are like vending machines for hot foods. They call them hole in the walls. And we just walked past one. But we don't know what any of it is. Which one do you want?
I vote for the fried hot dog looking thing.
Okay.
It's so warm and fresh feeling. I have no idea what I'm about to eat.
Bite into it. No. Just bite into it.
Tastes like a big bitter ball in.
Nice.
I think we're in the way. Other people want the vending machine.
Okay.
My friend Mayor told me to get a frikadel from a vending machine. I got the croquette instead because I read that a frickadel is kind of.
Like a hot dog.
And I got food poisoning last time I had a hot dog.
So.
Close enough.
We agree.
Looking like there's a slight possibility that our food tour is going to be cut short due to rain. Do you have Tom towels?
No. Thank you very much. Thank you.
So we stopped by a bakery and we got some Tom puja which we've been calling Tom Pals all day. So we asked the lady if she had Tom Pal. She was like Kara read on the Internet that it is named after a performing dwarf. And we have no clue why.
Got like this really flaky bottom layer with what I think is the same pudding that I ate in my. Whatever the round ball thing was called. Start with an O. And then like basically just another layer of the flaky stuff covered in orange icing. Sugary goodness. I think I'm gonna be sick.
When this food tour is over with. You're really good at eating any of the sweets. I'm gonna save the rest of this. Good idea. 70. That is so much milk.
So excited.
Coffee.
We just learned it means wrong coffee. Wrong. Because it's like half coffee, half milk. It's the Dutch version of a latte.
It's really frothy.
It quit raining. So we're gonna try to find the last few things on our list, but I'm getting really full.
Me, too.
Thank you. Yes, you too. Thank you.
We've run into this residential part of town. I think we've seen all there is to see of Zeist. We've been walking for a very long time, so we're kind of out of options. I think we might be calling it a night.
How many did we get?
I think 11 of our 15.
Say, that's pretty good for a DIY food tour.
I think so. I mean, we've eaten all of these things just since lunchtime.
The only thing I'm really disappointed about is the fresh stroopwafels.
Never found them.
They looked everywhere, though.
But you still have the packaged stroopwafels at home?
I ate them all.
You ate them?
Yeah.
Stay in the game? Nope.
It's good. Where's my Tom pals?
I think I left it at the coffee shop.
I'm sorry. I laid it down on the counter so I can count all that change you've dumped in my hand to pay for the coffee.
