EATING delicious street food in Singapore's Chinatown

This is a first-person travel vlog by Nate Buchanan (with Kara Buchanan) documenting arrival in Singapore, brief airport-lounge sleep and wake-up logistics, checking into a budget hotel near Orchard Road, and an afternoon walk to Chinatown where they sample local hawker foods (notably fried carrot cake and Malaysian shaved ice). The video mixes logistics (flight/arrival times, hotel check-in) with informal food tasting and local sightseeing observations.

Chapters
I slept. She did.
They tend not to like filming at these things.
Oh there's mine.
Can I get it?
Almost went into the black depths.
Where are we going right now?
To terminal three.
Why?
For a potential lounge opportunity.
It's now 2:30 in the morning. Kara hasn't slept at all. So if this vlog starts off weird, I'm sorry.
Looking comfy.
If the lounge fells that will be us. This doesn't look promising. Escalator TEMPORARILY STAIRS Sorry for the convenience. I don't know if this escalator just isn't working or if we're not supposed to be down here. Figure we'll find out soon enough. This floor is awes.
Do you want me to carry your bag?
Yes, thank you.
Isn't it a cool thing being in.
Airport late night with nobody around?
It's pretty cool.
This will totally be the COVID photo of the vlog. Oh, there it is.
My hopes are up so high that we're getting into this lounge. If we have to come back here and sleep on chairs that would be really sad news coming.
What are the chances we're going into this?
Not. I'm. I'm at like 90% right now. Okay.
Feel like I should eat a cookie.
This is our bed for the night.
All right. We're going to sleep.
Just finished sleeping for about two hours. It is 5:30 in the morning and we're getting kicked out of here in 15 minutes because we could only stay for three hours. So I'm gonna grab something to eat. We have to.
I brought you some coffee.
Gotta wake up so you can eat some breakfast before they kick us out.
As usual we are sitting in the airport trying to figure out how to get to our hotel.
I think it's gonna be pretty easy this time. It seems straightforward.
Took a risk.
Glad nobody stole the camera. We are here and we are going.
Here 30 minutes.
So we found it.
Are we here?
No Ibis. And there's a 711 at the bottom. Yes.
Hello Singapore.
It is currently 8:30 and not surprisingly they did not have a room available for us right now. So they said we could check in around 12. So until we can check in we are going to walk to Orchard Road.
It's supposed to be a really big.
Shopping place street like 2.5km worth of malls and lots of food. Yeah we figure we'll go walk around and then find a hawker stand eat lunch at.
We're not really positive what those are yet. First night.
Ouch.
Those are the most violent pigeons I've ever seen.
There was A park on the map on the way to Orchard Street. So we decided to take a detour.
It's so pretty.
It's pretty, but it's hot and humid. Yeah. Feels like being in the rainforest.
There's really loud bugs.
That's not annoying.
What if it could be a bird?
That sounds like a machine.
The majestic fort wall.
I get the shards from dumpling. Horror Fun.
It comes with soup.
Now we're back checked into our hotel, and since we only slept three hours last night, we're going to sleep for a couple hours.
When we woke up from our nap, it was raining. And so we are going to just walk to Chinatown and hope for the best. We have our rain jackets and my drive pick.
Fun.
It's time to walk.
Well, as has been the case for the the last few days of our trip, it's raining.
Kara's taking advantage while there's no rain. See that boat thing right there? The entire reason I wanted to come to Singapore in the first place was to swim in an infinity pool that goes along the edge of that boat sits on top of the building. Unfortunately, the hotel costs $400 a night, and the only way to swim there is if you're staying in the hotel. We won't be doing that, but I still want to go see it.
I think we found.
That's great.
Those are all restaurants. How will we ever choose?
That's what we're eating.
Lonely planet suggested getting spicy crab in Chinatown, but the one that we saw was $68. So we got enough blank instead.
Care's already off. Find the next delicious food item.
She doesn't even know. I'm not following her yet.
All right. We missed Karen's first taste test because I forgot to record. What are we eating?
This is.
Spicy.
Spicy. It's called fried carrot cake.
But it's.
Not like American carrot cake. It's like rice and flour and something else. And then there's this really yummy dipping sauce. It's very salty, but you can also get it sweet with molasses.
Looks like hash browns.
Kind of tastes like hash browns.
It's what people eat here, and it's delicious.
We didn't like that at all.
Nate, what is this?
I cannot remember where I read about it, but somebody at the table sitting beside us was eating it, and it sparked my memory. It's Malaysian shaved ice. Popular toppings include red beans and.
Check it out. Sweet corn.
There is corn in his ice.
It's like shaved ice and a meal all at the same time. Yeah, I. I'm going to say there's like a 20% chance that this actually tastes good, but I have to try.
It's surprisingly really good.
Yeah, right.
Seriously, so good.
Go for it. Blazing shaved ice. Go for it. I love all things sweet. Carrot is not.
We're getting down to the good stuff here.
Whole beans. Nate, that's too many beans.
All right.
No more ice cream soup.
It's currently 8:30. 38:30. Rebels. Oh, no.
Spot on our screen.
I got it. Sweet. Good work.
Just need a little moisture.
Look at this piece of art, Kara. What's the name of it?
Untitled 2013.
I think it should be called Untitled and Unfinished.
Literally. It's a piece of wood.
It embodies Eugene's vision of aesthetically pleasing futuristic machines with forms and shapes inspired by nature.
You know, now that I look at it.
No.
That'S a tree trunk.
Pal. Scum face plant. How uncoordinated did I look?
How old? Just a look.
First American thing we've seen in Singapore.
