YouTube travel vlog "EXPLORING SANTORINI BY CAR" (Nate and Kara Buchanan). The hosts spend a final day on Santorini exploring by rental vehicle after checking out of their Airbnb, stop for highly-praised gyros at a place they call Lucky, consider ATVs but rent a car for safety and luggage reasons, and drive to multiple island sites (lighthouse, Red Beach, Black Beach, Akrotiri). They encounter a closed road that affects sunset plans, run into filming limits when their camera memory card fills, and later wait in the hot airport for a midnight flight to Athens (depart 12:30, arrive Athens 1:30) en route onward to Istanbul and Amsterdam. Transcript notes a local real estate comment that a nearby property’s land alone was quoted at over 3 million euros.

So while we've been in Santorini, we've noticed that there's a lot of, like, abandoned buildings that are in beautiful locations. And we were asking our Airbnb host why nobody has, like, bought it and fixed it up. He said, this place right here, just the real estate cost over 3 million euros. It's not including demolishing the thing, fixing the house. So that explains a lot.
We just checked out of our favorite Airbnb in the whole world. And I'm so sad.
We don't fly out till midnight tonight. So we have the entire day to explore the island. So we've decided that we're going to rent ATVs so we can go like everywhere we haven't been.
But first we're going back to get the best gyros on the island.
At Lucky, which is where we went last night. They really were the best maybe in the world. And we're back.
We've yet to find better than this. Our plans completely changed. We are now on our way to pick up our rental car. Instead of a four wheeler, this lady freaked Kara out.
She saw somebody drive off a cliff.
She did too.
Not that I think that that would happen to us, but a bus basically ran it off the road. And a car is cheaper and we can drive it all the way to the airport. We don't have to worry about getting our luggage on the bus and take it whenever we want.
After it gets dark, it gets freezing cold. A car will be better. Not as much fun, but better. Our noble steel for the next few hours.
My question is, where are we going? I'll figure that out. Yeah, I think we should drive to the lighthouse. That's what I think. So to the lighthouse. Take us there. That's where we want to go.
28 minutes. We could also hike there in three hours. Sam.
We just drove up to the very windy part of the island where there's a big lighthouse.
We're on like the most northern tip of Santorini right now. It's crazy how, like, once you get in the car and you drive like 10 minutes away from Fira, it's much less touristy.
Yeah, there's nobody here.
This island is much bigger than I thought it was.
That's Fira, where we've been staying all week. And then yesterday we hiked all the way out to Oia on the southern tip of the island. Sail there. Like, we can go down to the red beach, which is fun.
It's actually like really cool how the red contrasts with the blue. Like you'd Think the water would just be disgusting.
This is cool.
Incredibly windy here at the Red Beach. You're probably not gonna be able to anything we say.
Where to next? I think we're going to the ancient city of Akrathira.
This is where the happy donkeys live.
My hair is a little bit windblown. What about yours? Julio? Looking lovely. The memory card on our camera filled up, which is my bad. So we have to film with my phone the rest of the night. We just left the Black beach.
And.
Now we're heading to the top of Santorini for sunset. Anything else?
We've left the main road. We've now hit a gravel road. It was either like drive around the entire island to try to go over this mountain or you can try to drive the gravel road. This is it. This is Ancient Theorem. That's this walking trail right here.
We're not taking the gravel road. We're taking the 30 minute drive to the other side of the island.
Jordan, check it out.
We were about to switch back up this mountain and just learn that the road closed at 5:30.
It is now 5:42. Just missed it.
Here goes our plans for the headache.
Jordan.
And we're back at McDonald's.
We have about 30 minutes till we have to get to the airport. We're killing time with some coffee since our plane takes off at midnight.
Smooth jazz.
It is like 500 degrees in this airport right now.
It's currently 11:30pm we are flying out of Santorini at 12:30 which means we arrive at Athens at 1:30.
Why did we book these late?
We did this so we could have an extra day in Santorini and save on accommodations tonight. So after we get to Athens at 1:30, Kara and I have a flight to Istanbul and ultimately Amsterdam that leaves.
At 6:00am it's gonna be a fun night.
And we don't get to Amsterdam until like 10:30 tomorrow night. And there's no time factored in for sleep. This flight's 30 minutes. The next one's like, I don't know, two hours.
It was worth the extra day in Santorini.
We're gonna be zombies. There's all kinds of space in this airport.
Jordan and Julianne, how are you feeling about our decision? I feel good. If it wasn't so hot in here.
I'm a little sleepy, but I've got to go to some extra day. And Santorin.
We're all getting slightly delirious.
What's going down?
It is 2.15am we board another flight at 6am and we are on our third kiosk attempting to check into our next flight. Did you get checked in?
Good for you.
You think? We never fly.
I'm not sure if we're gonna be able to sleep tonight, but I think that's what we're gonna try to do next. We have three hours until our plane boards, so I'm not exactly sure where to end this vlog and start the next one, but we'll call it here and pick back up in a few hours with darker bags under our eyes.
Definitely.
Go for it. Ready?
Gosh.
You gave her a heart attack.
Our rental car grave is going in the ocean.
That is so cute.
Matching costume.
Do we explain why we came to Santorini?
No, why? Basically.
The sisterhood of the traveling pan is why we're here.
We're gonna do that tomorrow.
Hope it's as pretty as it is on this picture.
