FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF INDIA | Old Delhi & Chandni Chowk Market

A travel-vlog style video in which Nate and Kara Buchanan arrive in Old Delhi and explore the chaotic Chandni Chowk market. They describe navigating crowded metros and streets, interact with vendors while shopping (camera rain cover, lens covers), search for clothes for the Holi festival, and end the day eating a notable stuffed/butter garlic naan and paneer butter masala while reflecting on food-safety precautions.

Wow.
You know you spent too much time in the executive lounge when the manager brings you a parting gift.
So we've used points to stay here at the Marriott for the last seven days. We edited a ton of videos, got a lot of travel planning done, and now it's finally time to go out and explore India.
So the Marriott is located out by the airport. So today we are grabbing an Uber to a new hotel that's located in old Delhi.
That's it.
It's.
Apparently we're close to our hotel right now. This is insane. Wow. Oh, I see it. The Tasket Palace.
So we thought that we had mentally prepared ourselves for the madness of India, but I don't think that there's anything that can prepare you for this in the best way possible. I think this is going to be incredible. And I think this is our hotel. It looks close. Oh, it's not.
Yeah, he looks nice.
Thank you. I know somebody. I'm saying no to you. It's not the Marriott, but it'll do. It's pretty nice. Looks clean.
The guy at the front desk was super nice.
Super nice. And he spent about 10 minutes telling us about all the different tourist scams that we need to watch out for.
I can't wait to get back out there. That was crazy.
So we're gonna get settled in here and then we're heading back out and we're just gonna embrace the chaos.
Our plans for today are to head to the Chandi Chowk market.
Chandni Chowk.
Chandi Chowk. It's supposed to be like one of the largest wholesale markets in all of India. It's supposed to be completely crazy and I'm really looking forward.
There's a cow.
Carrying a wagon in the middle of the road.
We've heard the best way to get there is the metro. But first we have to cross this road, which is easier said than done. I'm going. I'm going.
We did it.
So to ride the metro, you have to buy these little tokens. They cost 20 rupees a piece, which is about 30 cents US for one ride on the metro.
They are stuffed on this train. I think we'll wait for the next one.
Walking.
Here we go.
Without a doubt, the busiest subway we've ever been on.
Somebody stepped on my toe. I think I'm missing a toenail.
There are at least 10 times more people on the subway than there should be.
They just all kept pushing.
I don't even have to hold on to the rail cuz everybody's just packed in so tight. My body is touching at least seven different people right now.
We made it.
Wow.
That was pretty. I was really scared we weren't going to be able to get off.
Definitely not going the right way.
As soon as I said, excuse me, when the doors open, nobody else was getting off, all these people like backed up and made this space.
With how much everybody was pushing, you wouldn't have thought that anybody had any manners, but they did. It was so nice. Welcome to the market. This is totally intense. So in addition to just seeing the market today, we actually have a couple things that we're trying to accomplish. First, we need to get some clothes because we're going to Holi, which is this giant festival where they throw color everywhere. So we need some clothes that we can throw away. And we're also going to try to find a protector for the camera. Not a good place to be walking backwards and talking. This is crazy. Like you, it's just really hard to describe. There are people everywhere, all different kinds of transportation, so much food, all different kinds of shops. From what I understand, this market is broken down into like different sections. So there's like a sections of like tools, a section of clothes, a section of electronics. I think we're in like the. The tool section right now. I see a lot of hammers.
Cannot believe that we're here. It is like loud. There's smells.
We love places where you can just walk around and you never know what in the world you're going to see. And this fits that more than we're gonna die more than any place we've ever been.
You really gotta watch yourself though. Like every step you have to watch out. This is the file folder section.
Excuse me, sir. This one bicycle, it's a very good year.
No thanks.
This is an old delir, sir. You're my first customer.
No, thank you. My God, these guys on the bike are intense.
Yes, this is the bicycle?
Yes. No matter how many times you tell them no, they don't go away.
Then in ricks a cycle.
Very good year. Yes.
You promise?
No, thank you.
Then my first is then a Red Fort.
Red fort.
You're waiting.
He's been following me now for at least two minutes.
There's a cow up to here drove dinner market. You wrong.
Thank you.
Yes, my first customer.
Yeah.
My promise. Only Indian good money charge one over 100 rupees.
I believe it's a good deal, but no, thank you. Sorry.
Yes, sir. This one by request.
Oh, thank you.
We came mentally prepared for this. I think as long as you have the right attitude. It really doesn't take away from it. You just kind of have to like embrace it as part of the it's experience and realize that people are just.
Trying to make a living getting hungry.
Looking at all this street food. So we think we're on our way to the electronics market to try to find a cover for the camera. But everything looks the same. So all of these little shops right here, there's at least like 15 in a row. They're all selling different types of camera equipment, a lot of the same types of camera equipment. And we're just walking in and out of each one, seeing what they have and trying to get the best deal.
Because you are going to click for a very precious moment. So I want that you should buy good filter.
Thank you very much.
You are welcome.
Can we take a picture together?
Oh yes.
It's okay.
I'm a model, you have to pay. I'm a model. You have to give me your love.
My love.
Thank you so much.
So we found the indoor section of the camera market and you just bought a rain cover for the camera and two lens covers for 15 from the nicest old man in the world.
Now we're going to the clothes section.
I can't believe we found says it fit our camera.
I know.
I still just can't believe we're here. Craziness never stops. I love it.
So we're giving up on the search for clothes because it's starting to get dark. Hello. How are you? So we read about this place that's supposed to serve the best stuffed naan in all of Delhi. So we want to kick off our first meal in Delhi with a bang. Sorry about that.
Well, let's be honest. One of the biggest reasons you come to India is for the food. And I'm pumped.
So we've been walking around in circles in this maze looking for this restaurant and this guy was nice enough to draw us map a couple turns.
Sure.
It'll be harder than it looks.
I think we might have found the spice market. Everyone's coughing.
But this is just incredible. Where else in the world can you experience this insane. I would say we've been walking around for three hours and I'm nowhere close to being ready to leave. Like I think I could come back, walk around all day tomorrow and that would be a fantastic way to spend the day.
Seriously. We found the restaurant. Coffee D hot tea. I am so happy right now. All of these things are stuffed non auctions. Bad news is we had no idea what any of the them were. We tried to Google a few, but we went with Scarlet Classic. Yes.
It was too big.
Oh, it's good. It's good. Yeah. Thank you.
Perfect.
Ah, yes. Reconstruct.
You can never be lied.
Okay.
Thank you.
They reconstructed our naan for us by touching every piece multiple times.
So we went with the butter garlic naan, and it was so big, it wouldn't fit on one plate. They had to cut it up and put it on two plates. It looks so incredible. Then we got paneer butter masala. I'm about to try my first.
In India. The butter is just, like, dripping off of it.
This is such a great moment. I've had so much dawn in my life. Everywhere but India. And we're finally eating it in India.
All right, I'm gonna try. Just look at this.
See how shiny that is? That's better.
That is so good. It's like the perfect amount of spice. We ordered normal spicy, but it's still pretty spicy. Okay, seriously, does it get any better than this? Massive chunks of cheese just swimming in this creamy butter spicy sauce. And you can just eat it with a spoon if you want to.
That was every bit as delicious as caravan sounds. We could not have had a better first meal in India.
So you may or may not have heard of deli belly. When people come here and their stomach doesn't necessarily agree with food. So we've done everything that we know to do to try to prevent that by taking probiotics every day and eating the yogurt at breakfast, at the buffet at the Marriott every day.
Those are two things somebody told us to do.
We don't know if it'll work, but we came here to eat, and we're gonna eat and hope for the best.
It's getting dark, so we're heading back to the subway and calling it a day. What an awesome start to India.
Seriously.
Can't wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow there's a cow with a blanket. Hello.
With blankets.
What's the weather in Delhi right now?
In Delhi, it's 84 with haze. It'll be mostly sunny today with a forecast high of 86 and a low of 57.
She has an Indian accent.
She's so smart.
Google knows her in India.
