FLYING BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES (redemption trip)

Nate and Kara Buchanan fly back to the Philippines after a rough first visit in 2016 marked by long waits, sickness, and hotel problems. They document a 27-hour journey from Nashville through Chicago, Tokyo, and Manila, while self-isolating in Singapore on day 11 of their travels.

Real quick, before we get started with this video, we just wanted to give you a little update. We are currently on day 11 of self isolation here in Singapore.
We have canceled all of our future travel plans and are staying put indefinitely. However, we filmed this series in the Philippines at the beginning of March before COVID 19 was declared a global pandemic.
With that said, we are super excited to share this Philippine series with you and we hope that it can provide a little bit of a travel fix while we're all stuck at home or.
In Singapore, our new home.
If you missed our last video. After an incredible two weeks in Antarctica, we just spent 95 hours traveling back to our hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Just 36 hours later, we are back at the airport and we have traded out our parkas for our bathing suits because today we are flying to the Philippines.
It's a bad. A bad start to the day when you're running going into the airport.
Before we get started, we wanted to say a big thank you to Surf Shark for sponsoring this video and supporting our travels. We're both very optimistic people. We don't like to think about things going wrong, which means that sometimes we don't take the precautions that we should. We're about to cross the glacier while it's raining and sleeting and thundering. However, recently we watched another traveler that we know get their Instagram account stolen. So we're trying to take our online security more seriously. And now that I've looked into it, I think a VPN is something that every traveler should be using. If you don't know what that stands for, it's Virtual Private Network. Essentially, it's an online privacy protection tool that encrypts all the data that you send to the Internet. We are constantly using public WI fi like this one here at the Nashville airport. And we've heard that that can be a gold mine for hackers. So now we're always using a VPN while we travel to protect our passwords, usernames, and other sensitive information. Another great reason for travelers to use a VPN is because the content that you get from streaming services can change based on what country you're in. For example, one of our favorite shows on Netflix isn't available here in Singapore, but we can change our location and watch it just like we're back home in the U.S. in short, if you travel, you should probably be using a vpn. And we've chosen Surf Shark. It's highly rated and it's the only VPN to offer unlimited devices, which means that we're using it on this, this, this and this all on one account. Also, Surf Shark is offering you 83% off plus a free month. Plus there's a 30 day trial so if you don't like it, you can get your money back. It's essentially there's no risk to try it out, so you can use our link in the description below to grab the discount.
Thank you.
First flight of the day is a quick two hours to Chicago. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you again for flying with us. We would like to welcome back our mileage plus members who are earning award miles for today's flight to the Cumberland Bridge.
This is my new favorite part about United. They have started giving you the option of a stroopwafel for a snack. Probably the best airplane stack that exists exists on an economy domestic fleet that is so specific.
Belt fasten and all items stowed until the seat belt sign has been turned off.
Please make sure you have all of.
Your personal belongings and be careful when opening overhead compartments. You're now free to use mobile phones.
And small lightweight devices in transmit mode.
So from here we have a 13 hour flight to Tokyo and then another 5 hour flight to the Philippines. And we are so excited because this is a redemption trip for us.
We'll explain all that when we get to Tokyo because we have a really tight connection here.
Thank you.
This flight is relatively empty, which means we got a really good deal on upgrading ourselves to premium economy. Paige came by and offered us eye masks, dental kits and earplugs. Make sure you have the latest United F downloaded before we close the door. We have a lot of. The biggest difference is in regular quantity, the configuration is 3, 4, 3 and here is 2, 4, 3. So that means we have the same amount of space with our two seats than we would have had with these and really nice TVs. In short, we are very much looking forward to the next 13 hours. We should have pop on the luggage.
Today, so feel free to say to.
Me, I just met overhead.
Announcer.
The food is the same as economy, but they did bring us shampoo.
So please remain seated with your seatbelt comfortably fastened until you stop at the gate.
Thirteen hours later we have made it to Tokyo and our bodies think that it is 1:30 in the morning. It feels like 1:30.
So back to the Philippines.
This is actually the second time that we will be going and if you've been following since the beginning, you may remember that the first time didn't really go so smoothly. I'm tired and there's no coffee here.
To be completely honest, we went in with really high expectations and we were pretty disappointed by the whole experience. It's hot in here. Can't find the lounge.
So far, I do not like the.
Philippines.
But this was back in 2016, just two weeks after starting this channel. Our flight boards in five minutes. As usual, we will be making it to the gate at the last minute.
So we had just come from Japan, which is super efficient, and we just weren't mentally prepared for what we were going to experience in the Philippines. Why do we have to wait in line and everywhere we go, Anything you do here, there's a line still waiting for 50 minutes.
How do they ever get anything done?
The Philippines has been pretty rough. The first night we ended up waiting in line for a bus for four hours. She was legit asleep. We moved a little bit. 1:51 in the morning.
And then Kara got sick and then we showed up at our hotel and there was nobody there to let us in. And we were just standing there surrounded by stray dogs. Oh.
Maybe sleep well.
We're here Hour one into the bus ride. Cara throughout.
Hopefully they'll wake somebody up so we'll have somewhere to stay tonight.
This bed has a couple stains on it.
It's past 1 in the morning.
It's past 2 in the morning.
It's past two in the morning.
Sounds even worse in the camera.
And that's how our trip started. It got better from there, but the Philippines still wasn't the paradise that we had always imagined. Welp, it's raining today. Really hasn't gone as planned.
It's raining again. With all of that said, the Philippines has been at the very top of our list as one of the countries that we want to revisit the most because we know that it was our own fault that we didn't enjoy it.
First of all, we were brand new travelers. It was only our second week and brand new at vlogging, and it was all just a little overwhelming for us.
And personally, I feel like I did a really poor job of just planning the trip. We thought we could show up and just wing it and we just weren't good enough for that. We really were.
That was terrible. We've said a million times, if we both went back to the same place and did the same trip today, it would be a blast.
Everyone that we know who's been to the Philippines absolutely loves it. So we are super excited to go back and redeem this country and discover the side of the Philippines that everybody raves about.
And it's warm when we just came from Antarctica. Yes.
Last flight of the day five hours to Manila.
This is our first time flying Ana this plane is super nice. Really nice TVs impressed. Please remain seated with your seat belt securely fastened until the captain turns off the seat belt sign. Take care. With opening.
27 hours after leaving Nashville we have finally made it to the Philippines.
Well there are no stray dogs.
You cracked yourself up so now actually isn't our final destination. We board our next flight in about five hours and for $35 we got this box with two bunk beds in the airport.
We're not sleeping on the floor.
I say this is a pretty good deal. Honestly if you gave me the choice right now between a free $200 Marriott room and this, I would take this because it's inside the airport which means more sleep. Woo. Which we.
It wasn't our fault. There was an accident.
The biggest difference is the configuration.
To the Philippines. Huh.
Strong man.
It.
