KARA'S NEW FAVORITE FOOD + South America's Tallest Building!

A first-person travel vlog by Kara and Nate Buchanan in Santiago, Chile. They visit the tallest building in South America (a mixed-use tower with the continent's largest mall), note facts they researched about it (cost US$1 billion, 64 floors, 984 ft tall), decide not to pay to go to the top because of poor visibility (approx. US$20), and explore the Bella Vista neighborhood searching for street food. They taste local snacks including sopaipillas (savory fried bread) and pastel de choclo (corn pudding with meat and egg), and Kara declares pastel de choclo her new favorite dish in South America. The vlog records practical travel details (where to find umida, boots shopping) and personal reflections/memories of the neighborhood.

Today's vlog is starting a little later than usual. We already went out and did a few things this morning, but we didn't bring the camera because we thought it would be pretty uneventful. So I took some terrible quality videos on my phone. First we finally got cash. It was our third attempt, so we didn't think we would break the camera. But it was successful this time.
Now we can buy street food.
Yay. Then we, we went to El Rapido again and it was just as good as the first time, maybe even faster. And then we saw lots of cool street performers.
Now we're about to head out for the evening to the tallest building in South America. There was this really tall building that we've been seeing and I did a little research and apparently it's the tallest and it has a big mall in the bottom of it, which normally would not be an attraction for us. But we are going to Patagonia in like two weeks and all we have are Chocos and Nike Freeze, which I'm pretty sure are not the proper shoes to be hiking on a glacier with while we're in Patagonia. So we're going to look for some of those. But first we have to figure out how to ride the subway.
Got the bib. And now we're going to the tallest building in South America.
I leave everything around.
I leave everything.
We did some research about this building on the train on the way here. We learned that it cost US$1 billion. It has 64 floors and it is 984ft tall. And it has the biggest mall in South America. So it's the biggest mall, the biggest building, and it's an office and it has like two hotels and we're going shopping.
We can officially say we've been in the largest mall and the tallest building in South America. And we both found some cute boots that we might come back and get for our trek.
We are leaving the mall. You can pay to go to the top, like US$20, I think. But because there's been a bunch of forest fires, the visibility here is really poor. So we don't think it's worth paying to go to the.
Please don't get mad.
What am I supposed to say? Oh yeah, I have actually been to Santiago before. It was one of my first international trips. I came with my MBA program in college and this building wasn't finished. So it's kind of cool to see it finished. That was like five years ago. I've been to three more countries than Kara and now I've only been to TU1.
I just have to go to Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic to catch up with Nate. Now we're going to this neighborhood called Bella Vista. It's like a. A cool street art kind of neighborhood. And on the way, we are keeping our eye open on a new food we've heard about called Umida. And I don't think they have it in restaurants. It's like a street thing. And that's what I'm set on for dinner.
Roy understand it's like the Chilean version of a Mexican tamale. It sounds delicious.
Let's go.
That train was so back. It's taking me back to our Hong Kong days.
Look at all these people waiting on us.
Like a sea of food. Say we're not making this too much.
That made, like, two people got on. It's going to be us.
No squish, squish. See ya. Oh, my gosh.
Thought we were stuck on it.
We've made it to Bella Vista, and now we're going to walk around and look for street art and street food.
I leave everything.
We haven't seen a ton of stuff, street art or street food yet. But this neighborhood is so cool. We crossed over the river, and it's like we're in a different world outside of the city. All the houses are colorful, and there's trees everywhere. It's beautiful. It's also this perfect time, like, when the sun's starting to go down and, like, the breeze picks up. It just feels so good outside. I don't know if you've noticed a trend of us going back home after lunch and then coming back out a few hours before the sun goes down. And since it's like the golden hour, just everything looks beautiful.
We started walking through this neighborhood, and I realized that we stayed in a hostel in this neighborhood. I've been seeing restaurants that I ate at, and, like, so. So many things that were just, like, not a part of my memory anymore have come flooding back. It feels so weird. And this is the hostel that we said.
Should you smell it first?
I feel weird doing that. He told me that the white sauce was his favorite, so that's what I went with. I looked these up online. I think it's some kind of, like, pumpkin fried bread.
Was, like, ranch sauce on it.
It's like a. Yeah, they called it a sopa pia. It tastes like fried bread that I just put ranch sauce on. Kind of weird, but I guess it's local. We had to stop and get a snack because we've been on the hunt for umida for, like, 45 minutes. We haven't been able to find any, but we did message our Airbnb lady, and she told us a really good place. Well, not a place. She told us there was a lady outside of our building that served them from 12 to 3. So we're gonna get those tomorrow. We're trying out another place tonight. I expected sopapillas to be a sweet experience, and it was not.
There's Avery also.
I'm pretty sure there was no pumpkin in those.
It tasted like a flat, deep fried biscuit. Like an American biscuit.
It was good, just not what I expected.
I liked it. So our host told us to come here and order pastel de choclo, because it's like a pie with meat and corn, which sounds delicious, as long as it doesn't come with a cup of mayonnaise on top. Oh, it smells so good. All right. Looks like.
Corn pudding with chicken.
Oh, good. Well, in the south, in Tennessee, we have this stuff called corn pudding, and that is what this is with chicken chunks in it.
I love it. This is my new favorite dish in South America. Oh, and there's egg in here too. Oh, this is so amazing. What else are we gonna find? This is definitely a new favorite food and a great way to enjoy the night.
I've been to.
Okay. There's also.
This is so fun. It's like a scavenger hunt.
