MID-ATLANTIC Q&A! 15-Day Repositioning Cruise

Nate and Kara Buchanan answer viewer questions from day ten of a 15-day transatlantic cruise, their 63rd country coming up. They discuss travel hacking with credit cards, favorite podcasts like How I Built This, why they avoid filming in Turkey and Dubai, and their goal to visit 100+ countries and Antarctica.

Greetings from the Atlantic Ocean. Is there a less creepy way of thinking?
Yeah, just don't use that tone.
How's do you say greetings? Greetings from the Atlantic Ocean. I still feel creepy.
Today is our tenth day on our transatlantic cruise and our fifth day at sea. We have been going across the Atlantic Ocean for five whole days, which is nuts.
And we are almost to St. Kitts, but we've been doing pretty much the exact same thing for the last five days. We've fallen into a bit of a routine, and we've already made two videos about that routine. So we thought today would be a really good opportunity to film a Q and A since we have of next year, which would be perfect if it works out. But we all know that this list is going to completely change. Definitely.
So, yeah, we have no idea. I mean, we have no idea.
We have no idea. But there's definitely more than 100 countries that we want to go to.
That was a long answer. Robert asked if the north or the South Pole are on our list, and yes, they are, but we can't afford them right now. But one day.
So for me, the North Pole is not as much on my list because the South Pole is a continent. So I would love to go to Antarctica. I actually don't even have to go to the South Pole. I just want to touch the seventh continent. I think it'd be awesome to go to 100 countries and all seven continents.
As long as I have a really warm coat. Jason asked how we travel hack on.
The road, so I assume that he's talking about, like, signing up for credit cards, because that's the way that we get the majority of our frequent flyer miles. And the answer is, we really don't do much travel hacking on the road. We tend to do it when we go home. So we've been averaging going home, like, twice a year, once in the summer and once in the winter. And we usually sign up for at least one or two new credit cards when we go home, and then we meet the minimum spending requirements while we're out traveling. If that all sounds like a foreign language to you, I've put together an entire course on travel hacking, and we'll link it down below. Bit of a shameless plug there. Thanks for asking.
Jason, do you want to read one?
No. You could.
You can read.
No.
Emily asks what we listen to on the road. Podcasts or music, and we listen to both. Yeah, we listen to music, like, while we're working. Like, we're both just sitting on our computers. We have a playlist called Karen Nay's Travel Playlist on Spotify. But when we're, like, working out or on a bus or a plane or not working. Listen.
Podcast.
What podcasts are your favorite? What do you recommend?
You put me on the spot.
He loves how I built this, so.
I love, like, all things business. How I Built this is probably my favorite podcast right now. I think it's really well done. They interview some really inspiring people. And then I love the Tim Ferriss show as well.
And Mike Rowe. What is it called? That's the way I Heard it.
Is that what it's called? That's the Way I heard. No, I don't think that's what it is. Anyway, I'm sure if you just search Mike Rowe in the podcast app, those actually might be my favorite.
What is it called?
He does an incredible job of telling a really good story in a very short amount of time. So if you just want to consume some bite size information in podcast form, Micro's podcast is fantastic.
He's so great.
I just love his voice. I wish I sound.
That's the way I heard him.
I wish I sounded like Micro. Yeah, I think the way I heard it's right.
Go listen to the way I heard about micro. Scott commented and said that his wife was super embarrassed that he asked a question. And don't be embarrassed, because we love your question. It was, what is your favorite part of Vietnam? I think it's pretty obvious. The food and the coffee. It's, like, messy. So fluffy. How do they do it?
They whip an egg.
Really? Wow. Especially the coffee. Vietnam has some very unique and very delicious coffee. Yes. I love coconut. Yay.
We should get another one of these.
Fred asked if we have any plans for the stands. Yes, we do, kind of.
So we definitely want to spend some time in the Middle east next year. I know that the visa requirements on some of them are pretty strict, so off the top of my head, I don't know exactly which ones that we'll be visiting, but. But I think definitely Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are both pretty high on our list. Yep.
Candy asked if there's any place we would want to go but can't because of safety or other restrictions like visas. And yes, there's a lot of those places.
So last I've heard, Americans cannot enter Turkey with their US Passport now, which is a huge bummer because Turkey was extremely high on our list. I'm hoping all of that gets resolved very soon. But Turkey is definitely one of those places that we can't Go. But we really want to go. And then there's a couple other countries that we would really like to go to. And we're allowed to go to, but they just don't really fit with what we're doing. Like Dubai, you can't bring drones into. And we always travel with a drone. And we don't, like, just travel from home and then go back. And we could just leave the drone for a trip. It's like, some. We'd have to do something with it. So that just turns into a huge pain. And then we just had some friends go to Qatar, which is another country we would really love to visit. But they said they got stopped by the police multiple times for having their camera and filming. And filming is very frowned upon there. So that's another place that we love to go, but it just doesn't really fit with exactly what we're doing right now.
So maybe we'll go one day. Like, when we don't have YouTube channel. Exactly. Somewhere we want to go, but we don't really see the point in going if we can't, like, share it, because that's what we do.
Yeah.
So Nick and Angela asked if there's something that we can't pack but we wish we had with us while we were traveling.
I haven't thought of that answer to this yet.
I just thought of one.
Okay.
Like, off the top of my head. Well, no, not really.
I feel like you have a thousand things that you wish you could pack.
I mean, I wish you could have.
If they're clothes items, you have, like, a thousand.
Yeah. I wish I had all my shoes. I really get tired of the shoes that I have, like, really quickly. And all my clothes.
I kind of enjoy having an excuse to wear the same seven shirts.
People have been telling us that we need to get an AeroPress for coffee. Because I complain when we have to do powdered coffee. And, like, we have one, we could travel with it, I think. I don't know. I just.
We're optimists, and we assume that we're gonna run into good coffee or the places that we stay are gonna have a coffee maker. We should have learned our lesson by.
Now, because it is so tiny. Like, you really could justify carrying it around. We would use it all the time.
Cop.
That still doesn't answer the question.
No, that's not. This is definitely something. When I used to work from home, I used to have two screens, and I so miss having two computer screens when I'm actually trying to, like, work and get stuff done. If I could pack another computer screen, that would be my one thing.
That's a good one. Jess asked if we feel like we've missed out on things due to a tight budget.
This is a tricky question.
It is really tricky.
I would say yes, we have definitely missed out on some things. Nothing is coming to mind right off the top of my head. But I would say it's also forced us to have some more authentic experiences. For sure. When you have to do stuff the local way, because the local way is usually cheaper, like riding local transportation. I don't know. I'm trying to think of some other.
Examples, like hole in the wall restaurants that are, like, way cheaper than the nice restaurants, which we might do. Like, if we had, like, endless amount of money, we might still eat at the hole in malt places, because I think we really do enjoy those more. Most of the time.
I would have booked a room with an outside balcony. If we had endless amounts of money. That would have been something I would have sports for, because I would love just been able to, like, go outside and watch the ocean.
Yeah.
But I really do wonder if our travel style would change if we didn't have much at all. Yeah.
I'd probably talk you into taking a taxi more often. Like, if it.
We would probably walk less places if we had our bags. I'm trying to think of an example of something that we missed out on because we didn't have money.
Maybe we would book, like, the nicest Airbnb in the very center of the old town of whatever country we're in.
So it was more convenient to just go do more things.
Yeah. Instead of, like, one outside of the city. That's a little cheaper. But, like, I don't really mind that.
Let's think of another one. We'd probably book business class.
I would make an excuse that our business class videos do really well, and that's how it would justify. Okay. So when we were in South America, I think I would have flown to Iguazu Falls, like, for a day and seen it and then flown back. But it just seemed like a waste of. I don't want to say that I've heard Iguazu Falls is super impressive, but it just wasn't in the budget for us to fly out there for a couple days and then fly back. Yeah.
And who knows if we'll ever be in that part of the world again.
Yeah.
So I guess you could say we missed out.
Yeah. So we've definitely missed out on some things, but I feel like there's. There's pros and cons to traveling on a budget.
When I think back at our travels, I don't think, like, oh, I wish we could have, like, paid for all of these things. I think having a budget has helped me really appreciate the things that don't have to do with money, like the experiences that you can just have in a place no matter what.
Okay.
Lindsey asked if we plan to take group trips to places that we love. Kind of like the Vespa tour that we're planning right now. And I think if it goes well, Vespa tour that we're having in Italy next July.
Well, first we should say it's sold out, so that's super exciting. So that's making it look like there's a better chance that we could do something like this again. Yeah.
So if it goes well, I think I would love to do it again. Like, we had a blast planning it. Hopefully everybody else has fun, so we might do another one in Italy again. Or maybe we'll find a new place.
I wouldn't mind an excuse to go back to Italy every summer. So maybe we do one in Italy every summer, and then we add a new place next year. Yeah, we don't know. It's all going to totally depend on how the first trip goes this summer. We think it's going to be fantastic. I'm sure some of you that are watching this are coming with us. We've done a ton of work to make sure that it goes smoothly.
You just never know.
Okay. Do you think we'd answer to that?
Yeah.
I'm getting this feeling that future Kara is gonna be really tired of hearing me talk on this Q and A. And we've been talking forever. So I think we're gonna wrap up the Q and A here.
Tomorrow we are visiting our 63rd country of St. Kitts. And so now I need to look up what we're gonna do.
The cruise line gave us this little guide, but I feel like this is where everybody else on the cruise is gonna go to all of these places, so.
And we have Internet.
We'll probably avoid those and look for somewhere else.
Okay.
Are you okay?
Yeah. I'm sorry. I'm laughing.
Things. Nothing is coming to mind right off the top of my head. But I would say it's also forced us to have some more authentic experiences.
For sure.
